Mehta shares his journey from Jainism to atheism, his experiences visiting churches for his book I Sold My Soul on eBay, and his thoughts on the increasing political influence of religious groups in America. We also discuss why Christian nationalism is on the rise, how churches use community as a powerful tool, and what patterns he sees emerging in the fight for secularism. Hemant Mehta is an author, an activist, and a blogger. Oh, and he's also an atheist. He has been the force behind The Friendly Atheist blog, podcast, website and social media platforms for years. But before you think Hemant's sole purpose is to convert people to atheism, listen to this conversation. He doesn't care to debate anyone on atheism vs religion.  His scope of work goes far beyond tallying atheists to carry on the torch. Hemant's work is about ensuring that belief- or faith-based decisions aren't being made in places where they shouldn't.  We had a fantastic conversation with Hemant. To find him and his work, Google “the friendly atheist” and his work pops up. As he says “it's not hard to find”. Hemant's CV is lengthy. His books, I Sold My Soul on eBay (2007),The Young Atheist's Survival Guide (2012) and The Friendly Atheist: Thoughts on the Role of Religion in Politics and Media (2013) are widely available. His YouTube series, The Atheist Voice, has nearly 220K subscribers. But mostly what you'll hear today is that Hemant is kind, brilliant, articulate and wants to make this world with this life a better place. He is a remarkable and accessible scholar and was a joy of a guest.  "Simply put, I have never seen any evidence of 'God's work' in action. I've seen what people think is God's work, but which actually has perfectly natural explanations. I believe that most people are good, even when nobody's looking. I believe our best path to discovering the truth lies in science, not religion." - Hemant Mehta, 2013

Hemant Mehta (author of the friendly atheist blog) was only looking to expand his horizons and raise a little money for a local freethinking student group when he came up with the idea that made him a media sensation. He started a page on eBay where he offered to attend the church of the highest bidder. Stories quickly spread in the media of an atheist "selling his soul" on ebay, which drove the bid higher and higher. Soon Mehta was traveling across the country visiting different churches to make good on his commitment. These church visits became the basis of his book "I Sold My Soul on eBay"--which gave Christians a chance to see church through the eyes of a friendly but critical atheist. For this episode Hemant joins us in the studio to talk about what he saw and how Christian readers reacted to his book.

Host: Chris Mooney Recently at Pomona College in California, three atheists—one of them a Point of Inquiry host—got together to debate the future of the movement. And some sparks flew. Topics raised included the rise of the so-called "nones" (those professing "no religion" in surveys), the lack of representation for atheists in the U.S. Congress, and the debate between moderate or "live-and-let-live" atheism as opposed to a louder and more aggressive version. Despite their disagreement, it was clear that it’s an exciting time for the movement, as atheism  becomes more visible in American life. Where do we go from here? The students in the packed audience have that in their hands. Panel participants were: David Silverman, president of American Atheists. Mr. Silverman attended Brandeis University and specialized in computer science; he worked as an inventor at Bell Labs for 8 years. He then served at American Atheists as national spokesperson, vice president, and finally president, a post he assumed this year. Hemant Mehta writes the "Friendly Atheist" blog and serves on the board of directors of the Foundation Beyond Belief and the Secular Student Alliance. He has also appeared on the front page of the Wall Street Journal and is author of the book I Sold My Soul on eBay, released in 2007. Chris Mooney is a host of Point of Inquiry.
