“Understanding Religious Trauma Syndrome What is Religious Trauma Syndrome? Religious Trauma Syndrome (RTS) is a term used to describe the negative mental health effects of unhealthy or harmful religious experiences. It is a form of psychological trauma that can result from the harmful effects of religious indoctrination, abuse, or manipulation. RTS can occur when an individual struggles with leaving a religion or a set of beliefs that has led to their indoctrination. It often involves the trauma of breaking away from a controlling environment, lifestyle, or religious figure. RTS can have a significant impact on an individual's mental and emotional well-being. The symptoms of RTS can be similar to those of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and can include anxiety, depression, panic attacks, flashbacks, and nightmares. Individuals with RTS may also experience feelings of guilt, shame, and worthlessness. The mental health profession is becoming increasingly aware of the impact of religious trauma, and more therapists are trained to recognize and treat RTS. It is essential to seek help from a qualified mental health professional if you are experiencing symptoms of RTS. Therapy can help you process your experiences, develop coping skills, and work towards healing and recovery. If you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms of RTS, it is crucial to remember that you are not alone. Many individuals have experienced religious trauma and have found healing and recovery through therapy and support groups. With the right help and support, it is possible to overcome the negative effects of religious trauma and live a fulfilling life.” -https://www.sabinorecovery.com/what-is-religious-trauma-syndrome/#:~:text=RTS%20can%20occur%20when%20an,%2C%20lifestyle%2C%20or%20religious%20figure. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/support

This weeks episode covers the new topic of "Religious Trauma Syndrome." This is a term used to describe the negative psychological and emotional effects that can result from experiences within a religion.  In this episode, we explore the often unspoken struggles faced by individuals who have experienced Religious Trauma Syndrome (RTS). Whether you grew up in a strict religious environment, faced spiritual abuse, or encountered cognitive dissonance between your beliefs and experiences, the aftermath can leave deep emotional scars. It's important to recognize that the impact of religious trauma can vary significantly from person to person, and not everyone who has experienced religious environments will develop RTS. However, listen to the podcast for examples which highlight some of the common experiences that can contribute to religious trauma syndrome.  I hope in this episode to create a safe and supportive space for those who may be silently struggling with religious trauma. Whether you're on a journey of healing yourself or seeking to understand and support loved ones, this episode offers valuable guidance and compassion.

Trauma is felt at the deepest core of our being, which means that simply leaving it behind will be very difficult or perhaps even impossible. Religious trauma has received very little attention by psychologists and therapists, though I've discovered some resources that can help.

My story is long and complex which is why I've been working on a book. This entry will leave out many details and cover the general overview of my experiences, and help people understand how I got here. "Religious trauma is similar in symptoms to Complex-PTSD. Symptoms of RT Negative beliefs about others Low self-esteem Struggle with emotional regulation Depression, anxiety, grief, and anger NightmaresDisassociation, flashbacks Lack of pleasureFeeling isolated Feeling empty, lost, or directionless Reduced critical thinking Feeling out of place or like you don't belong According to Restoration Counseling, Religious Trauma Syndrome is often caused for several reasons by different people. Many people experience RTS as a result of an authoritarian religion or faith community. Individuals suffering from RTS may be struggling with black-and-white thinking, irrational beliefs, difficulty trusting themselves, low self-esteem, or feeling indebted to a group of people. Skewed views of sex, discipline, emotional regulation, relationships, and self-expression are usually present in toxic religious environments" (Source: Restoration Counseling).- Andrew Pledger(Excerpt taken from https://andrewpledger.mypixieset.com/my-story/)Find AndrewFacebookWebsiteInstagram〰️〰️Shanny

And now, after working with people from conservative and high demand religions for over two decades, I understand the significance of Marlene Winell's work.   Dr. Marlene Winell is a licensed psychologist, educator, and writer in western Massachusetts. Her background includes 30 years of experience in human services, in both community and academic settings. She holds a doctorate in Human Development and Family Studies from Pennsylvania State University and is the author of, "Leaving the Fold: A Guide for Former Fundamentalists and Others Leaving their Religion." Dr. Winell directs the organization, Journey Free, with services for recovery from harmful religion. In 2011, she named "Religious Trauma Syndrome." Marlene is also a filmmaker, photographer, mother, and grandmother.   Intro ("Fisher's Hornpipe") and outro by Otter Creek Podcast edited by: Ashley Pacini

Amy and Crissy tackle a delicate topic in this episode. So many of us have been impacted by unhealthy religious and spiritual communities, or even been impacted by cult-like groups/ communities. Crissy tells her personal story of abuse and healing and a trigger warner may be in order. Please make sure that you have the support you need in place just in case this episode is difficult for you. She has bravely decided to tell her story, knowing there may be consequences with family and others. As a result of healing her own trauma, Crissy is committed to helping others who may feel alone, unable to make a big life shift or have given up on creating changes in life due to learned hopelessness. Crissy healed by receiving Yoga Therapy, which is the opposite of many dogmatic religions and spiritual cults. Yoga encourages us to go inward and listen to our deeper Self, to learn to trust ourselves, to make decisions based on our own perceptions of the Yamas (social disciplines) and Niyamas (personal disciplines). Yoga helps us to come home to ourselves and learn to live with an internal compass instead of looking to church or spiritual elders for the answers. ·        Luna tells her personal story of being a 15-year-old girl who endured abuse at the hands of her family and church.·        Luna talks about how many years she tried to escape and the deep psychological impact this had on her long-term, which she finally was able to free herself after studying yoga and getting permission to trust herself again.·        Luna talks about how it was challenging to leave her community, family and friends and feeling so alone.·        We discuss how yoga philosophy gave her permission to think, feel and be differently.·        We discuss how her program is laid out to meet people where they are, after leaving the dogma.·        And how to go towards a place of thriving, and not just surviving.·        You will be inspired at the story that Luna has for us, and how she healed herself. She is a powerful force for good in the world. This episode is sponsored by BetterHelp. Dr. Marlene Winell  knows all too well that exiting a controlling religion can trigger a devastating life crisis. As a college student, she moved away from the fire and brimstone fundamentalist Christianity she was raised in, and the fallout of her exodus was so dramatically upending that she felt compelled to dedicate her life's work to studying the very phenomenon that she'd later coin:  ‘Religious Trauma Syndrome.' In this episode of A Little Bit Culty she chats with us about symptoms that arise in response to traumatic or stressful religious experiences, and what can be helpful along the road to recovery after leaving the fold. More About Our Guest: Dr. Winell is a psychologist, educator, and writer whose background includes 30 years of experience in human services, in both community and academic settings. She holds a doctorate in Human Development and Family Studies from Pennsylvania State University and is the author of Leaving the Fold: A Guide for Former Fundamentalists and Others Leaving their Religion. Leaving the Fold has become a leading self-help book in the field of religious recovery - and examines the effects of authoritarian religion (namely fundamentalist Christianity) on individuals who leave the faith.  She's also the founder of Journey Free organization, which is dedicated to helping people transition out of harmful religions, recover from trauma, and rebuild their lives. We've developed programs for both individuals and groups. If you are recovering from religious harm, we have great respect for your strength and courage. More and more we are learning about spiritual and religious abuse and seeing different signs of it. Religious Trauma Syndrome (RTS) is a group of symptoms that arise in response to traumatic or stressful religious experiences. While Religious Trauma Syndrome is not an official diagnosis in the DSM-5, it is a common experience shared among many who have escaped cults, fundamentalist religious groups, abusive religious settings, or other painful experiences with religion. The symptoms of Religious Trauma Syndrome are comparable to the symptoms of complex PTSD. Religious Trauma Syndrome is in the early stages of research and is gaining traction as a legitimate diagnosis. Below are some symptoms commonly experienced by people suffering from Religious Trauma Syndrome. Confusing thoughts and reduced ability to think critically Negative beliefs about self, others, and the world Trouble making decisions Feelings of depression, anxiety, grief, anger, lethargy A sense of feeling lost, directionless, and alone A lack of pleasure or interest in things you used to enjoy A loss of a community (family, friends, romantic relationships) Feeling isolated or a sense that you don't belong Feeling “behind the times” with cultural happenings And many other symptoms of PTSD including nightmares, flashbacks, dissociation, emotional difficulty, etc. Religious Trauma Syndrome is often caused for different reasons for different people. Many people experience RTS as a result from an authoritarian religion or faith community. Individuals suffering from RTS may be struggling with black and white thinking, irrational beliefs, difficulty trusting oneself, low self-esteem, or feeling indebted to a group of people. Skewed views of sex, discipline, emotional regulation, relationships, and self-expression are usually present in toxic religious environments. If you think you may be struggling with Religious Trauma Syndrome. You are not alone. There are many out there struggling with the same feelings you are, and there is hope for healing. Through talk therapy and EMDR you can regain power over who you are and who you want to be. You can move past memories that are too painful to think about, and begin creating the life you want to live. This extremely helpful episode features a conversation with returning guest Andrew Jasko, a Princeton-seminary trained former minister who walked away from the faith years ago and now as a therapist, is devoting his life to helping people heal from religious trauma syndrome (RTS). Andrew's blog is helpfully titled "Life After Dogma," and that is exactly what we focus on in this episode--what is trauma, generally  speaking? And then, what exactly is religious trauma, and how can you begin to cope with it? How does religious dogma affect us in terms of trauma, and is there life after we leave it behind? One aspect of healing is to discover spirituality--which is something that doesn't necessarily appeal to all people who come out of cults or fundamentalist religions. But in this episode, regardless of your beliefs about it, you'll find help and resources in dealing with your own RTS. Support Independent Media like MindShift Podcast on Patreon! This week's guest is psychologist, author and speaker Dr Marlene Winell, who--in many ways, it could be said--almost literally "wrote the book" on the subject of religious trauma syndrome, or RTS. As you'll no doubt hear us discuss, this recording took place prior to the unfortunate cancellation of the CORT2020 conference which was to be held in Vancouver, BC. Dr Winell was meant to be one of the keynote speakers there. Dr Winell authored the important book in 1994 entitled Leaving the Fold: A Guide for Former Fundamentalists and Others Leaving Their Religion. Off the back of that work, she went on to write articles identifying RTS, and has since devoted her life and practice to helping individuals who have left religion and struggle with various aspects of RTS. I am sure that you will find this interview insightful, challenging and helpful on your journey out of religion, whatever that may look like.
