This week we'll take some time away for a celebration of Americana sounds from every corner. It's a mixed bag of jazz, blues, country, rock, and everything in between in another of our free form eclectic romps here on Deeper Roots. Count on some wild swings and some quiet moments reserved for the corner booth in the show today. Aretha, Cat Power, Etta Jones and Gale Garnett are some of the female vocalists that we'll feature this morning. We'll also visit that ‘boulevard of broken dreams' with Esquivel, some lighter instrumentals from Ethel Smith and Herb Alpert; classic softer side Americana from Chris Isaak and Pokey LaFarge and the polar opposite from Creedence and BB King. What a way to blast on into 2025. Join Dave Stroud as he begins yet another year with the promise of doing the right thing...always.

Join your host, Greg Howard Jr, as he sits down with Bryce from BUFFALO ROSE to talk about their new album Again Again Again.Buffalo Rose is a wildly charismatic six-piece modern folk/Americana band from Pittsburgh, PA. They take the singer-songwriter tradition to a new level by crafting original songs which are emotive, meticulously arranged, and inspired by a world of idiosyncratic influences that never let a dull or predictable moment creep in.The band released their debut album, The Soil and the Seed, in 2018 and established themselves as a vocal, instrumental, and creative force. Since then, Buffalo Rose has dropped two EPs, 2019's Big Stampede and 2020's Borrowed and Blue, opened for the Wood Brothers, Mipso, Pokey LaFarge, Tyler Childers, Infamous Stringdusters, and shared a festival stage with the legendary Sam Bush. The band's upward trajectory continues into 2022 with their latest EP Rabbit, created in collaboration with Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award recipient Tom Paxton, followed by a new full-length LP scheduled for release later in the year.Buffalo Rose's lineup of Lucy Clabby (vocals), Margot Jezerc (vocals), Bryce Rabideau (mandolin), Malcolm Inglis (dobro), Jason Rafalak (upright bass), and Shane McLaughlin (guitar, vocals) pushes itself and each other far beyond their perceived limits and blends their diverse and atypical approach to songwriting with the desire to see how unique a song can get and still feel like home. They use powerful vocal harmonies, strong playing, and an original vision to operate at every possible emotional level and put on dynamic live shows that are unforgettable experiences. They go from up and moving to sad and sweet and back again, bringing the entire audience along. This combination of artistry and enthusiasm makes Buffalo Rose one of the most vital and important groups working today. Rather than play the folk music of the past, the band gleefully combines genres and ideas together to move acoustic music forward to a new, contemporary place without ever losing sight of its roots. Fans of Lake Street Dive, Nickel Creek, and Punch Brothers will find much to like in this crew. Anyone seeking compelling new acoustic music needs to join Buffalo Rose in the future right now.Buffalo Rose's Website - Facebook - Instagram - Twitter - TikTok - YouTube - BandcampSUPPORT THIS SHOW

At the tender age of eighteen, the Seattle-born crooner Gus Clark hit out to explore the United States with a backpack and a mandolin, cutting his teeth playing on the street and traveling by freight train or the kindness of those still bold enough to pick up a hitchhiker. Emerging over ten years later as an accomplished multi-instrumentalist (guitar, accordion, mandolin, and more), he now pays beautiful homage to an ultra-deep well of golden-era American music traditions, ranging from pre-WWII blues to 1960s Nashville honky tonk. In a voice that combines unique sincerity with pitch-perfect emotive richness, Clark delivers classic barn-burners, good-time dance tunes, bittersweet heartbreak ballads, and his own originals. His remarkable tenor and powerful musical presence are guaranteed to both wrench hearts and propel listeners onto the dance floor, whether Clark performs solo or backed by his rock-solid band.Over the years, Clark has proved himself as a staple of the Seattle music scene, frequenting the area's renowned country dance bars and Americana venues and lighting up its largest festivals with a range of projects. A regular guest vocalist at tribute nights and charity events, he's shared the stage with contemporary greats and up-and-comers such as Charlie Crockett, Pokey LaFarge, Eilen Jewell, Cactus Blossoms, Jeremy Pinnell, Whitney Rose, Easy Leaves, and Jaime Wyatt. He's a regular touring member of the outlaw party-country band Country Lips, contributing on accordion, vocals, and mandolin. For a decade now, Clark has also made music - an unmatchable mix of early jazz, jug-band, country, blues, old-time, Cajun, klezmer and originals - with his "musical sibling,” the Virginia-raised fiddle virtuoso and singer/songwriter Annie Ford. The dynamic duo's sweet harmonies have won hearts in humble living rooms, on street corners, on the grand stages of old vaudeville theaters, and far beyond.https://www.gusclarkmusic.com/ https://www.facebook.com/gusclarkmusic/https://www.instagram.com/gusclarkmusic/?hl=enhttps://open.spotify.com/artist/30Brw2NUOHg27lJfSsalHVhttps://music.apple.com/us/artist/gus-clark-the-least-of-his-problems/1435461314

Asheville, North Carolina's history as a music center goes back to the 1920s and string-band troubadours like Lesley Riddle and Bascom Lamar Lunsford, and country-music pioneer Jimmie Rodgers. But there's always been a lot more to this town than acoustic music and scenic mountain views. From the experimental Black Mountain College that drew a range of minds as diverse as German artist Josef Albers, composer John Cage, and Albert Einstein, Asheville was also the spiritual home for electronic-music pioneer Bob Moog, who invented the Moog synthesizer first popularized by experimental bands like Kraftwerk to giant disco hits like Donna Summer's “I Feel Love.”It's also a town where busking culture ensures that music flows from every street corner, and it's the adopted hometown of many modern musicians in a multitude of genres, including Pokey LaFarge, who spent his early career busking in Asheville, and Moses Sumney, a musician who's sonic palette is so broad, it's all but unclassifiable. In this premiere episode of Carolina Calling, we wonder and explore what elements of this place of creative retreat have drawn individualist artists for over a century? Perhaps it's the fact that whatever your style, Asheville is a place that allows creativity to grow and thrive.Subscribe to Carolina Calling to follow along as we journey across the Old North State, visiting towns like Shelby, Greensboro, Durham, Wilmington, and more.Brought to you by The Bluegrass Situation and Come Hear NCMusic used in this episode:Bascom Lamar Lunsford - “Dry Bones”Jimmie Rodgers - “My Carolina Sunshine Girl” Kraftwerk - “Autobahn”Donna Summer - “I Feel Love” Pokey LaFarge - “End Of My Rope”Moses Sumney - “Virile” Andrew Marlin - “Erie Fiddler (Carolina Calling Theme)”Moses Sumney - “Me In 20 Years”Steep Canyon Rangers - "Honey on My Tongue”Béla Bartók - "Romanian Folk Dances”New Order - “Blue Monday”Quindar - “Twin-Pole Sunshade for Rusty Schweickart”Pokey LaFarge - “Fine To Me” Bobby Hicks Feat. This week, Cincinnati, Ohio based post-punk neo-folk acoustic oldtime string band The Tillers recorded live at Ozark Folk Center State Park. Also, interviews with The Tillers' fearless leader, Mike Oberst. “The Tillers have been thumping their own distinctive sound of string band style folk music for a decade, riding it all over the country and across the sea. Four studio albums and one live record have won them praise as modern folk storytellers of the national soundscape. The band features Mike Oberst on banjo & vocals, Sean Geil on guitar & vocals, Joe Macheret on fiddle, and Aaron Geil on upright bass. “The Tillers got their start in August 2007 when they started thumping around with some banjos and guitars and a big wooden bass. Their look didn't fit the stereotype. They were clearly recovering punk rockers with roots in city's west side punk rock and hardcore scene. The punk influence gave their sound a distinctive bite, setting them apart from most other folk acts- a hard-driving percussive strum and stomp that brought new pulse and vinegar to some very old songs. But their musical range soon proved itself as they floated from hard-tackle thumping to tender graceful melody, all the while topped by Oberst and Geil's clear tenor harmonies. “Musically, the band wears many hats. Their sound has proven to be an appropriate fit with a wide range of musical styles- traditional folk, bluegrass, jazz, punk rock and anything else they might run into. They have shared the stage with a broad swath of national touring acts, ranging from renowned folk legends such as Doc Watson, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Guy Clark, Country Joe McDonald, Jerry Douglas, Iris Dement, Pokey LaFarge, The Hackensaw Boys and The Carolina Chocolate Drops to rambunctious rock daredevils like the Legendary Shack Shakers.” www.the-tillers.com/bio In this week's “From the Vault” segment, OHR producer Jeff Glover offers a 1981 archival recording of Ozark original fiddler Sam Younger performing the traditional tune “Smoky Mountain Shuffle,” from the Ozark Folk Center State Park archives. Author, folklorist and songwriter Charley Sandage presents an historical portrait of the people, events and indomitable spirit of Ozark culture that resulted in the creation of the Ozark Folk Center State Park and its enduring legacy of music and craft. In this episode, Charley begins our celebration of 50 years of the Buffalo National River, America's first national river.

Happy Halloween everyone! The weather’s been bad for trick or treating around here, but should be good tonight. Shouldn’t be too cold, wither, so Batman doesn’t have to wear a winter jacket over his costume. Let’s focus on some great music in today’s podcast, with Pokey LaFarge, David Crosby, Phoebe Bridgers, the Beatles, Elton John, … Continue reading "Happy Halloween"
This week, we bring you an in-depth dive with vintage roots-n-soul excavator and beloved Illinois-born songwriter Pokey LaFarge. With his trusty guitar on his lap during the talk, taped in his LA breakfast nook, we go through the making of his funky and cheerful new LP In The Blossom of Their Shade. For the last decade and change, Pokey LaFarge (born Andrew Heissler in Bloomington-Normal) has criss-crossed the globe making his own brand of historic-minded, literary-tinged folk blues. Europe, especially, has become a second home. From his fashion sense, to his high-cutting delivery, LaFarge seems like he could have stepped out of a road show with Hank Williams and Sister Rosetta Tharpe, and yet, rock luminaries like Jack White saw something deeper than just a player of old-time covers. Opening for White got LaFarge in front of huge crowds, and standout records like the danceable Something In The Water (2015) and the darker Rock Bottom Rhapsody (2020) saw him transition from front-porch country folk to muscular jangly rock-n-soul.Out on his own from a young age, Pokey began busking to get by and soon teamed up with the South City Three to create his first run of albums in 2009. If there's a few things that helped his more uplifting 2021 LP In The Blossom of Their Shade come to be, they may have been falling in love again, rediscovering his faith in a higher power, and taking plenty of power naps during his songwriting sessions. During the pandemic, Pokey also began helping the local homeless community in LA. Stick around to hear an exclusive acoustic performance of his single “Get It 'Fore It's Gone”.
