How a beloved children's cartoon turns fathers into mothers and what the Bible says about itBlaze Media, By Jeremy Pryor, on October 6, 2024https://www.theblaze.com/align/bluey-turns-fathers-into-mothersBluey's dad adores his kids. A conservative writer says that's unbiblical. The Friendly Atheist by Hemant Mehta on October 8, 2024https://www.friendlyatheist.com/p/blueys-dad-adores-his-kids-a-conservativeThe conversation opens with a discussion about a conservative writer, Jeremy Pryor, and his critique of the children's cartoon Bluey, focusing on the portrayal of the father figure. Pryor argues that the show reflects how modern society has removed all "manly" aspects of fatherhood. Cindy introduces the topic by discussing the article's outcry against the show, noting that it was featured in conservative media outlets. The debate begins by highlighting the absurdity of Pryor's stance, with the panelists collectively agreeing that attacking a children's cartoon for such reasons is a stretch. Kelley and Cynthia point out the frequent conservative attacks on children's media over the years, referencing shows like Barney and Teletubbies.Cynthia discusses how Pryor's appeal to tradition is a flawed argument. His belief that traditional gender roles should be preserved without question is based on a false premise that these roles are biologically fixed and beneficial. She dismantles Pryor's assumption that such roles are inherently superior, noting that rigid gender roles have historically caused harm within families. Jonathan picks up on this theme, arguing that this conservative backlash is a desperate attempt to cling to a sense of privilege and outdated personal mythology. He observes that as society evolves toward equality, those invested in traditional gender roles feel left behind, often clinging to an imagined idealized past where men were strong and women submissive.Kelley points out the absurdity of Pryor's claim about an "objective" ideal for fatherhood and motherhood, noting that such ideals are subjective and influenced by cultural norms. The idea that there could be one "correct" version of parenthood is questioned, and the panelists collectively reject this notion.Cindy continues by questioning the supposed biological basis of gendered behaviors, mocking the idea that boys should wear blue and girls pink as something rooted in biology.Jonathan dives into the hypocrisy of conservatives like Pryor, who decry the influence of symbols in media on children's minds, all while the church itself has used symbols for centuries to shape behavior. He calls out this projection of guilt onto others, a tactic to distract from their own indoctrination efforts. He emphasizes that conservatives often accuse others of what they themselves are guilty of, particularly when they cannot defend their outdated beliefs. Jonathan concludes that such people are too emotionally invested in their beliefs and social standing to change, even when confronted with facts.Cindy points out that Pryor's complaints about the show's title character being blue as a subversive gender statement are entirely misplaced. Bluey is a blue heeler dog, not a comment on gender roles.Cynthia shares an anecdote about her own upbringing, where her father played a central, loving role in her life, defying the stereotypical “manly” behaviors that conservatives like Pryor seem to promote. The panel concludes by agreeing that conservatives' fixation on rigid gender roles is not only outdated but harmful, and that individuals should not be defined by their beliefs. The Non-Prophets, Episode 23.42.1 featuring Kelley Laughlin, Jonathan Roudabush, Cindy Plaza and Cynthia McDonaldBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-non-prophets--3254964/support.

Ignoring racism won't fix racism: A response to Robyn Blumner's misguided essayThe Friendly Atheist, By Bakari Chavanu and Hemant Mehta, on Aug 13, 2024https://www.friendlyatheist.com/p/ignoring-racism-wont-fix-racism-aBakari Shabanu, a Black atheist humanist, critiques Robert Blumer's editorial on secular humanism and the notion of a colorblind society. Blumer argues for a society that overlooks race, believing that focusing on race perpetuates division and reverse racism. However, Shabanu contends that this approach disregards the realities of systemic racism and the historical context of Black empowerment movements. He argues that dismissing race as a crucial factor undermines efforts to address racial injustice, especially given the ongoing struggles faced by marginalized communities. Shabanu's criticism highlights the importance of acknowledging race in the fight against inequality, rather than adopting a colorblind ideology that can inadvertently support the status quo.The discussion further delves into the puzzling concept of "Black Supremacy," a term that appears unfounded and misleading. The speakers express confusion over its meaning, noting that it seems to be a straw man argument used to suggest that Black empowerment is a form of supremacy over other races. However, they argue that Black people do not hold systemic power over others, making the concept of Black supremacy a baseless and inflammatory term. Instead, movements like Black Power aim to combat systemic racism, not to establish dominance over other groups. The discussion critiques the notion of reverse racism, suggesting that it distracts from meaningful conversations about addressing systemic inequities. The group also critiques the language used by Blumer, particularly his use of the phrase "colorblind society." They argue that this term, often used by those who wish to downplay the significance of race, is disingenuous. By advocating for colorblindness, Blumer and others like him are accused of ignoring the ongoing issues of racial injustice and the lived experiences of marginalized groups. The speakers point out that advocating for a colorblind society, while claiming to promote equality, often serves to minimize the struggles of Black people and other minorities. This, they argue, aligns with white supremacist talking points, which seek to erase the realities of racism under the guise of equality. The conversation concludes with a reflection on the frustration some feel about the continued focus on race. While some may wish to move beyond racial discussions, the speakers emphasize that systemic issues cannot be resolved without addressing the role of race in society. They liken the call for colorblindness to the way corporations shift responsibility for recycling onto individuals, thereby avoiding accountability. Ultimately, they argue that meaningful change requires acknowledging and addressing the systemic factors that perpetuate racial disparities, rather than adopting a colorblind approach that ignores the root causes of inequality. The Non-Prophets, Episode 23.34.3 featuring Cynthia, Phil the Skeptic Atheist, Rob (Robert Croy) and Phoebe RoseBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-non-prophets--3254964/support.

Thanks to Humanists, all British Columbia municipalities have ditched prayers at meetings., Friendly Atheist, by Hemant Mehta, on July 5, 2024, https://www.friendlyatheist.com/p/thanks-to-humanists-all-british-columbiaIn a significant step forward for humanists and advocates of secular governance, all City Council meetings in British Columbia will now be prayer-free. This development comes nine years after a Supreme Court ruling declared the practice of opening meetings with prayers unconstitutional, as it violated civil rights. Despite the ruling, the British Columbia Humanist Association discovered that 23 municipalities were still starting their meetings with predominantly Christian prayers. In response, the association launched a determined campaign to end this practice. Their efforts included publishing a report identifying non-compliant municipalities, sending letters urging leaders to adhere to the law, and, in some cases, threatening legal action. As a result of these persistent efforts, all municipalities have now agreed to exclude prayers from their meetings and inauguration ceremonies. The decision is seen as a major victory for activists and supporters of secularism, highlighting the importance of holding local leaders accountable to the law. This story was reported by Hemant Mehta on The Friendly Atheist blog, published on July 5, 2024.Panelist Tao expressed great satisfaction with the outcome, emphasizing the significance of achieving this change through secular means rather than through provocative actions like those of the Satanic Temple. Tao pointed out that the absence of prayer at public meetings ensures that no single religion is given undue prominence, which is a positive step towards inclusivity.Aaron, another panelist, shared Tao's enthusiasm, noting that the decision benefits everyone by putting all citizens on equal footing regardless of their religious beliefs. He highlighted that the practice of opening meetings with Christian prayers implicitly suggested that Christianity was more important than other religions, and ending this practice helps in fostering a more inclusive environment. The discussion also touched on the broader implications of religious diversity in municipal ceremonies. While some argued for representing various religions to reflect cultural diversity, the consensus leaned towards maintaining a secular approach to avoid privileging any particular belief system. The case of Vancouver's 2022 inauguration, which included representatives from different religious backgrounds, was mentioned as an example of an effort to promote inclusivity. The persistence and dedication of the British Columbia Humanist Association were crucial in ensuring compliance with the Supreme Court ruling, demonstrating the power of sustained advocacy and legal pressure. This case underscores the importance of vigilance and accountability in upholding secular principles in public governance. The Non-Prophets, Episode 23.29.4 featuring Cynthia McDonald, Kara Griffin, Mateo and Aaron JensenBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-non-prophets--3254964/support.

The incident, reported by Hemant Mehta on June 10th, 2024, details how the church justified its action citing concerns over the service dog's reaction to live band music and flashing lights during services. This justification stands in contrast to federal laws under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which mandate accommodation for service animals in public spaces. The discussion during the broadcast highlights broader issues of religious privilege and the implications of exemptions churches have from certain laws that govern other public and private entities. The conversation among hosts underscores skepticism towards the church's decision, questioning whether it reflects genuine safety concerns or a broader bias against accommodating individuals with disabilities. The incident underscores a recurring theme where religious institutions, while enjoying nonprofit status and other benefits, may not always uphold inclusivity standards expected in other sectors. The Non-Prophets, Episode 23.25.3 featuring Scott Dickie, Aaron Jensen, Jason Friedman and Helen GreeneBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-non-prophets--3254964/support.

His suggestion to future brides to unquestionably obey their husbands on their wedding night has drawn widespread criticism for perpetuating harmful gender stereotypes and minimizing female agency. While intended as a joke, Howerton's comments highlight deeper issues within Evangelical culture, including the normalization of patriarchal attitudes and the disregard for women's autonomy. This story, reported by Hemant Mehta in "The Friendly Atheist" on April 3rd, 2024, sparked a conversation about patriarchy and purity culture. The rhetoric perpetuated by Howerton reflects a mindset deeply rooted in patriarchal traditions, where women are expected to submit unquestionably to men. This toxic attitude extends beyond evangelical circles and affects people of all backgrounds, reinforcing harmful gender norms and undermining women's autonomy.Additionally, the conversation touched upon problematic statements made by figures like Jesse Lee Peterson, who has been known to dismiss women's sexual pleasure as unnatural. This further highlights the pervasive nature of patriarchal attitudes and the normalization of sexism within certain communities. The discussion also delved into the importance of comprehensive sex education, emphasizing consent, communication, and mutual pleasure. In contrast to the patriarchal views propagated by Howerton and others, healthy relationships are built on equality, respect, and open dialogue.Ultimately, the incident involving Pastor Howerton serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing struggle against patriarchal ideologies and the importance of promoting gender equality and autonomy in all aspects of society. The Non-Prophets, Episode 23.16.3 featuring Cynthia McDonald, Infidel64, Jason Friedman and Helen GreeneBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-non-prophets--3254964/support.

They're suing officials claiming their faith should allow them to discriminate against LGBTQ people. This preschool law in Colorado seems like it would be such a good helpful thing on paper, but religious institutions once again show their true colors and insist that if they can't discriminate based on Bronze Age tradition they're the persecuted ones. Not the people they actively try to take rights and freedoms away from.To qualify, schools have to follow a few basic rules, they have to accept kids regardless of their family's race, religion, sexual orientation, and gender identity. The Catholic Church wants funding from the state, but they don't want to adapt to the state's rules. They want your money and also wants you to do what they say.In their lawsuit, they claim that being forced to enroll children with gay parents into their schools “is likely to lead to intractable conflicts” , a “Catholic school cannot treat a same-sex couple as a family equivalent to the natural family without compromising its mission and Catholic identity.”Their argument that government is trying to corner the market in preschool is hypocritical. The Catholic church already has done that. The Archdiocese of Denver has 39 preschools, and their prices are so high they're not even listed on the website. They boast about giving nineteen hundred dollars per family through their own tuition assistance programs. The Archdiocese of Colorado has been responsible for 212 sexual abuse cases by 52 different priests. One of whom is actually still active in their church in Colorado Springs.Father William Martinez of the Colorado Springs Archdiocese, is not only an admitted sexual predator, he is actively working at a church that is responsible for 39 preschools. The church settled his case back in 1996 but he was reinstated in 2006.How on Earth are we putting our children in these situations? Why are we giving these people money? Why are we putting children in harm's way? They want to present it as if their religious liberty is at stake, but what they want is simply to make other people's lives worse. This is an admission by the Catholic church that they cannot exist without bigoted policies, plain and simple. In today's episode of the Atheist Experience, Johnny P. Angel and Hemant Mehta work through calls of free will, the supernatural, and morality. Art in PA says god is believable because people have seeked thousands of gods over thousands of years and you still have to believe in god to give up the Bible. Just because people were looking for something does not mean they were on the right track for what they are seeking. Wanting something to exist does not make it true. Why would an appeal to popularity make something true? If you care about truth, what is the best thing to do? David in Ireland asks how to deconstruct supernatural beliefs when using things such as Tarot cards or crystals. Going through a ritualistic process can put yourself in a different mental state of focus, but does not mean the items used in the ritual have any special powers. How do you know these items are helping more than any other practice? If all these tools you use disappear, would you end up in the same place? The power is within you and you do not need magical items. Tyler in NC does not believe god exists, but is not sure about free will. The idea of free will or not free will is a false dichotomy. How can a circumscribed universe of limited choices be considered free will?Sam in NY says that if people don't pray, they are incomplete. Are people who believe in a different god from you incomplete? What is the feeling of the power of prayer? How did you become complete? Is god's power limited to that of sight? Why do you believe the Bible is true? What if something is in the Quran but not the Bible? Are people who pray that use other books than the Bible or Quran? Shinobi Sheran in the USA believes a woman should have the right to choose all around. Who should make medical decisions on people's behalf? Once a politician starts making these decisions, it can be a slippery slope. Jon in FL does not believe religion is needed for morality. Why do you believe this? Countries that have the smallest belief in religion are arguably the most moral. How do you define morality? If you Google Phil Zuckerman you will find some interesting information on this. It will be hard to find anything that shows religious people are more moral when the playing field is even. The differences between secular morality and religious morality reside in the goals of each. Dave in India asks if god is the government's way of controlling people and part of the military industrial complex. What version of these beliefs would get people to think a certain way? The belief in a higher power has been around before nations had militaries and leaders may sprinkle the fairy dust of religion on their mission. This does not mean it is part of a conspiracy. When politicians use religion as a weapon, it backfires. Thank you for tuning in today! The question of the week is: What is the weirdest Bible story?

It's Friday, March 24th, A.D. 2023. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. By Adam McManus (Adam@TheWorldview.com) Similarities between Communist persecution & U.S. COVID shutdowns An expert who tackles Chinese Christian persecution sounded the alarm this week on parallels he sees between crackdowns perpetrated by the Chinese Communist Party and America's COVID shutdowns, reports FaithWire.com. Bob Fu, president of ChinaAid, said, “It is very shocking and horrible to see American society's transformation evolving from its constitutional basis.” The nonprofit leader, who became a Christian in the Chinese underground church and even went to prison for leading house churches before escaping in 1996, said he believes the American Left is increasingly turning to “dictatorial” tactics, refusing to allow diverse voices. Fu said, “I saw the governor of California, [Gavin Newsom], basically proscribe and order the church to shut down and say not only when they can worship, but how. The ways that he threatened to punish those churches and pastors sometimes were word-for-word exactly the same as what the Chinese Communist Party is using against the Chinese churches.” Russian Christian fined for objecting to war against Ukraine Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Christian Russians who express their opposition to it on grounds of their faith, continue to be detained and fined under Russia's wartime laws punishing "discrediting the Armed Forces,” reports Evangelical Focus. Police arrested Rostislav Charushin in Moscow because he made a poster that quoted three of the Bible's Ten Commandments including “Thou shalt not kill.”  (Exodus 20:13) He was fined twice on March 9 for both “discreditation” and violating the so-called Demonstrations Law. The political game at play in Trump's possible arrest Despite former President Trump's prediction that he would be arrested this past Tuesday over alleged hush payments he made indirectly to a disreputable actress, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg did not arrest him. Appearing on Fox News, Republican Congressman Jim Jordan of Ohio, the House Judiciary Committee Chair, pointed to the political agenda at play. JORDAN: “First, they went after President Trump on Russia. Then, it was a phone call with [Ukrainian President Volodymyr] Zelenskyy. Then, they wanted his tax return. Then, they go after his business records. Then, they go after his children. And now it's some misdemeanor alleged bookkeeping error. “And this is from the prosecutor who initially didn't want to do this. In fact, he had people resign because he wasn't going to do this because no one else would bring this case. I mean, the DOJ didn't bring the case. The federal district in New York didn't bring the case. The previous prosecutor in the district there in Manhattan didn't bring the case. Mr. Bragg himself didn't want to bring the case. But then, he got pressured I think from the Left. The one thing that I think is changed his mind is President Trump announced he was going to run for president again.” Keep in mind, Alvin Bragg's election in November 2021 was funded by a $1 million donation from a political action committee, the Color Of Change, funded by Leftist billionaire George Soros.   Colorado looked at banning all abortions On January 26th, Colorado Republican State Rep Scott Bottoms introduced a bill that would have banned all abortions in the Centennial State. Jeff Durbin, Director of End Abortion Now and a teaching elder at Apologia Church in Mesa, Arizona, urged Colorado lawmakers to support the bill. DURBIN: “They used to say, ‘I know it's technically a human. I know it looks like a person. It's not a person. It's a black man. I know it's technically human. It looks like a person. It's not a person. It's a Jew.' “Humanity is filled with this evil in this tyranny where we draw circles around ourselves and we dehumanize and butcher and tyrannize other human beings. This is a simple bill: human from the moment of fertilization. That's a fact. Equal protection for all humans -- in the womb and outside of the womb. “We all agree with the injustice of a white man killing a black man unjustly. But the pro-choice position is essentially saying, ‘We don't have a problem with that as long as it's in the womb.'” Sadly, on February 17th, in an 8-3 vote, the Colorado House Committee on Health & Insurance postponed the bill indefinitely. Christian wrestler says Muhammed false prophet And finally, a champion wrestler has come under fire for comments he made on Saturday about his Christian faith and suggesting that Muhammad is a false prophet after winning an NCAA title, reports Fox News. Penn State wrestler Aaron Brooks, age 22, shared his Christian beliefs after securing the victory, crediting the Lord for his triumph. BROOKS:  “Christ's resurrection is everything. Not just His life, but His death and resurrection. You can only get that through Him, the Holy Spirit. Only through Him. No false prophets. No Muhammad, no anyone else. Only Jesus Christ Himself.” REPORTER: “Power and finesse, your calling card.” BROOKS: “The Holy Spirit. Acts chapter one, verse eight. Power, Holy Spirit power, is everything. That's where it's from.” Brooks won his third consecutive individual NCAA title on Saturday after beating a wrestler from Northern Iowa. REPORTER: “And put in perspective winning three of these in a row.” BROOKS: “God used me. He gives me this platform for this right here. It's all for His glory.” Brooks came under fire on social media for saying that Muhammad, the founder and main prophet of Islam, was a false prophet. Hemant Mehta tweeted, “It's wild to see a Christian athlete trash Muslims during a post-match interview by calling Muhammad a ‘false' prophet.” And Randy Patriot tweeted, “If it was a Muslim wrestler saying that Jesus was only a prophet, it wouldn't even be newsworthy. Why is it a big deal only when Christians profess their faith and belief? Christians know why.” In John 14:6, Jesus says, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Friday, March 24th in the year of our Lord 2023. Subscribe by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com. Hemant Mehta has been a freethought blogger, author, and speaker for nearly 20 years now, building his blog Friendly Atheist into the largest atheist blog in the world. Just as the pandemic began, he came across a YouTube channel called Notes from Autumn. The host was a young woman and recent deconvert with strong criticisms of the way atheists communicate online. "if atheists are not offering a community that meets people's needs," she asks, "and they're only offering this kind of bitter pill, what incentive do people have to join that group?"

Hemant Mehta is an author, an activist, and a blogger. Oh, and he's also an atheist. He has been the force behind The Friendly Atheist blog, podcast, website and social media platforms for years. But before you think Hemant's sole purpose is to convert people to atheism, listen to this conversation. He doesn't care to debate anyone on atheism vs religion.  His scope of work goes far beyond tallying atheists to carry on the torch. Hemant's work is about ensuring that belief- or faith-based decisions aren't being made in places where they shouldn't.  We had a fantastic conversation with Hemant. To find him and his work, Google “the friendly atheist” and his work pops up. As he says “it's not hard to find”. Hemant's CV is lengthy. His books, I Sold My Soul on eBay (2007),The Young Atheist's Survival Guide (2012) and The Friendly Atheist: Thoughts on the Role of Religion in Politics and Media (2013) are widely available. His YouTube series, The Atheist Voice, has nearly 220K subscribers. But mostly what you'll hear today is that Hemant is kind, brilliant, articulate and wants to make this world with this life a better place. He is a remarkable and accessible scholar and was a joy of a guest.  "Simply put, I have never seen any evidence of 'God's work' in action. I've seen what people think is God's work, but which actually has perfectly natural explanations. I believe that most people are good, even when nobody's looking. I believe our best path to discovering the truth lies in science, not religion." - Hemant Mehta, 2013

Secondly we check in wi the B&R, where they tell us that the SBC likes to spend its money on its salaries, not the children or the elderly. Of course we get into 101 Questions & Skeptic Magazine. A four time bar exam failure is on a “mission from God.” And it's not as good as the Blues Brothers movie(s). And lastly, Lee H. Hamilton has a piece in the Courier & wants to tell us how religion SHOULD be in politics! For more info on the Pledge of Allegiance… check out Hemant Mehta's podcast… The Supreme Court VS. If you would like to hear more about the people vs. the POA… check out the podcast by Hemant Mehta, The Supreme Court VS Church State Separation. This 4 episode podcast takes a more in-depth look at the most prominent cases of church state separation. The JSE teaches us about priorities… “John” & I are back for part 2 of our conversation. Skeptic Magazine teaches us about Begging The Question. We remind you of Sinead O'Connor (now a Muslim) and her actions in 1992. Since we can never forget the amazing thing she did on that SNL episode… we continue to call out the pedophelia and the hypocrisy inherent in the Catholic Church. If you think your children are safe with a Catholic Priest… think again. A NY state bishop has been accused of sexual abuse dating back to 1983! In this special bonus episode, I finally was able to get together with Hemant Mehta, "The Friendly Atheist," for a fascinating discussion about his journey.   Hemant became an atheist out of the religion of Jainism, which is fascinating in and of itself--his story is quite different than the sort of "typical" atheist one might encounter who rejects the Christian version of God.   As a result of that journey of exploration, Hemant went on to develop the "Friendly Atheist" platform--blogging and podcasting--in an attempt to engage people from all walks of faith, belief systems and life in a respectful and mutually expanding dialogue: common ground, despite massive differences.   Help Support the Work of MindShift Podcast on Patreon!   Contact Information   The Friendly Atheist Blog on Patheos Follow Hemant on Twitter @hemantmehta Follow Me on Twitter @MindShift2018 Subscribe to the MindShift Podcast YouTube Channel

At a young age, Hemant figured out that something just didn't feel right. He didn't believe what his parents, society, and his peers were telling him was an absolute truth - so like any curious mind - he started digging, reading, and researching until he eventually found some answers. Today Hemant runs the popular website and Youtube channel - "The Friendly Atheist", where he imparts some of his thoughts, debunks myths held in religious circles, and questions religious norms. I had a late-night conversation with Hemant as we sat down to discuss religion, atheism, politics, and more. We discussed the morality and ethics of the bible and the stories it holds sacred. We discussed cults and cult-like behavior vs. religion - and many other interesting facets in today's political sphere. It's important to have an open dialogue about subjects that people don't feel comfortable about, it is really the only way we can analyze the subject, and ourselves, in relation to it. My Take - Using attack words as a method, or forcibly attacking another side for their religious or political ideologies - is a sure-fire way to make people hold their convictions even stronger. What Hemant does masterfully in his videos - is create content that is informative and fun - and that anyone can watch. He leaves others the space to make up their own minds on how they feel. I believe his method of putting out content is a smarter path - if you want to change hearts and minds.
