In Matthew 4:1-11, we see that temptation is ultimately an invitation to shift our trust, worship, and allegiance away from God, whether through the pursuit of pleasure, pride, or power. Jesus, fully God and fully human, faced each temptation and defeated it not with willpower, but with the truth of God's Word. His example reminds us that a hard place is not necessarily the wrong place, and that faith trusts God without demanding proof or seizing control. Ultimately, Jesus didn't just model how to resist temptation, He lived the perfect life we couldn't, becoming the sacrifice we needed.

James says God cannot be tempted, but Hebrews says Jesus was tempted just like we are. How do these two passages fit together?

Today is day 281 and we are studying The Second Commandment. 281. How was Jesus tempted to break the first two commandments? Satan tempted Jesus to bow down and worship him, promising him an earthly kingdom without the pain of the Cross. Instead, Jesus served and worshiped God faithfully and perfectly all his life, and calls us to do the same. Today, we're reading Mark 1:12-13: The Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. And he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. And he was with the wild animals, and the angels were ministering to him.— Mark 1:12-13 The moment Jesus is baptized—He's launched into battle. No time to bask in the glory of that voice from heaven. No pause. No pat on the back. The same Spirit that descended like a dove drives him into the wilderness. And what waits for him there? Satan. Temptation. Wild animals. Isolation. It's easy to think that following God should lead to peace, comfort, clarity. But here—obedience leads Jesus into hardship. Before Jesus ever preached a word, He had to fight a war. This wilderness moment matters. Jesus steps into the mess of temptation not because He had to—but because we do. He willingly walks into the fire so He could stand in it with us. He faces Satan head-on, not as a show of power, but as a statement of solidarity. The Son of God chose to suffer first. And Mark tells it fast—just two verses. No dialogue. No breakdown of the temptation. Just this: He was tempted, He endured, He was not alone. God doesn't abandon us in the wilderness—He strengthens us there. You may feel like you're walking through your own desert right now. Maybe you're facing temptation, loneliness, or attack. But take this to heart: Jesus has walked that road, and He's walking it with you now. #WildernessFaith, #JesusFightsFirst, #Mark11213 ASK THIS: What “wilderness” are you currently facing? How do you typically respond to spiritual battles? What does this passage teach you about God's presence in trials? In what ways can you rely more on the Spirit during temptation? DO THIS: Walk into your wilderness today with confidence—Jesus has already been there, and He's walking with you now. PRAY THIS: Jesus, thank you for walking into the wilderness before me. Was Jesus tempted for me? Yes, he was. He stepped into the wilderness to free us from the wilderness prison we created for ourselves in our sins. Because he overcame when we failed, we can come into the eternal garden he has prepared for us.

This Sunday we wrap up our sermon series on “Life's Three Greatest Temptations . . . according to the Bible.” This week we'll explore the third great temptation – a temptation that, more than any other, has the power to undermine the quality of your life.

We're in the midst of a brief sermon series called “Life's Three Greatest Temptations . . . according to the Bible.” This week we'll look at the second great temptation. This second temptation destroys more spiritual journeys than any other temptation known to humanity. We all need to know what it is and equip ourselves to resist it.

This Sunday we launch a new sermon series entitled, “Life's Three Greatest Temptations . . . according to the Bible.” Spoiler alert. They're not what you think! “Amen, I say to you, all sins and all blasphemies that people utter will be forgiven them. But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never have forgiveness, but is guilty of an everlasting sin.” For they had said, “He has an unclean spirit.” Mark 3:28–30Jesus spoke these words to the crowds who had gathered around His home in Capernaum because two groups of people had just spoken very critically of Him in a public way. First, some of His extended family arrived and said to everyone, “He is out of his mind.” And then some of the scribes from Jerusalem said, “He is possessed by Beelzebul.” Thus, Jesus states clearly that their blasphemy is a sin against the Holy Spirit and will have everlasting consequences.Why is it that certain sins will never be forgiven? What exactly is a sin against the Holy Spirit? Traditionally, our Church has identified this sin in a couple of ways. First, it is a sin of final impenitence, that is, the sin of obstinately persisting in grave sin. Obstinacy, or the refusal to repent, is a sin that cannot be forgiven, simply because the person committing it never seeks forgiveness. They become so entrenched in their sin that they refuse to change. Thus, the mercy of God is incapable of entering into them. Second, it has also been identified as presumption, meaning a person sins while expecting God to forgive. Presumption is more subtle; however, it also has the effect of keeping a person from the sincere repentance that is needed for forgiveness. The presumptuous person never fully repents and amends their life as long as they remain in their sin.Of all the many sins you struggle with or might struggle with in the future, pay special attention to the sins against the Holy Spirit. Though we should never think we have a right to God's forgiveness, we must always believe that God's mercy is so great that the moment we humbly acknowledge our sin and sincerely repent of it, God will forgive. But the key is “sincerity.” In order to be forgiven, the repentance within us must be sincere, authentic, real and complete. We cannot fool God. We can certainly fool ourselves, but not God.One of the best ways to regularly be certain that you are not guilty of any sin against the Holy Spirit is by going to the Sacrament of Confession and confessing your sins with openness, thoroughness and humility. Own your sin. Acknowledge it. Experience sorrow for it. Resolve to change. Then confess it and trust in God's mercy. Reflect, today, upon any way that you lack sincerity and thoroughness in your repentance from sin. Are you honest with yourself about the sins you have committed? Have you taken ownership of those sins? If so, have you also confessed them to God and firmly resolved never to commit them again? Take repentance seriously so that you never even begin to fall down the slippery slope that leads to any sin against the Holy Spirit.Most merciful Lord, You offer forgiveness to all who come to You with humility and sincere sorrow. Please fill me with these virtues and give me the resolve to change as I open myself to Your unfathomable mercy.
