Land-Grant Holy Land's newest podcast, ‘Bucketheads' takes you on a journey across the college basketball landscape every episode. The only basketball-focused podcast in the LGHL family of podcasts, co-hosts Connor Lemons and Justin Golba give the latest scoop on the Ohio State Buckeyes as well as all the other happenings in the college hoops world. ‘Bucketheads' will be released every Thursday morning throughout the regular season. During this week's episode, we thoroughly discuss seven-seed Ohio State's matchup with 10-seed Loyola Chicago in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Clearly, the Buckeye fanbase is pessimistic about this game and many folks don't see Ohio State advancing to the round of 32. But are there reasons to be optimistic? Connor and Justin explain why E.J. Liddell should have plenty of space to make plays and why feeding Zed Key (if healthy) early and often will be critical to the Buckeyes' chances of advancing. They also analyze the intriguing coaching matchup between Chris Holtmann — who has made the tournament every season with Ohio State — and first-year Loyola-Chicago head coach Drew Valentine, who is coaching in his first NCAA Tournament. They then look at the reasons to be concerned about this game. Can Ohio State stop Loyola's two star guards from blowing right past them, as has been the issue in recent weeks? Will they get the production from Joey Brunk and Key that they need to dominate the glass, and can they take advantage of a weak rebounding team and give themselves second-chance opportunities? Michigan comes into this game as one of the worst defenses in the country in terms of generating turnovers - they had 11, almost one in five of Ohio State's possessions. Despite no Juwan Howard, Hunter Dickinson, adverse whistles, and Caleb Houston in "road mode", they pull a win out. Brian knows a surprising amount about Joey Brunk. Encouraging play from the freshmen off the bench, especially Bufkin's dagger three. [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP] 2. Iowa starts at 21:55 Iowa shot 58% from three ¯_(ツ)_/¯ Keegan Murray and Kris Murray account for 42 of Iowa's points, Michigan can cover one of them but not both. Diabete had 28 points in the first Iowa game, only four in this one. 3. Reflecting on the Regular Season starts at 32:45 Michigan was a pre-season top five team and ended up on the bubble all season until now. What happened? Michigan had the #3 toughest schedule in America. Michigan finishes #31 in Kenpom, Big Ten Champion Wisconsin finishes #30. DeVante' Jones needed time to adjust to the Big Ten. Frankie Collins didn't shoot as well as expected most of the season. Caleb Houston was supposed to be a wing but ended up being a forward. Moussa Diabete exceeded expectations on offense but wasn't there on defense. Brandon Johns seemed to disappear this season. There are no real wings on this roster. 4. Hockey vs Michigan State starts at 54:02 What does Michigan have to do to get hockey muppets?? Brian showed up to the second game five minutes late and it was already 2-0. Is there anything else to say other than "Michigan State is bad"? Some guys got their first goals which was a nice thing to have. Children of Yost didn't even do the chant after the 8th goal in the second game. Michigan gets Notre Dame next - the team that has been Michigan kryptonite all season. Michigan could possibly pass Minnesota State for the #1 overall seed. Ohio State might not make the tournament at all now. Your podcast editor con confirm: Colorado is gorgeous in March. The next man up mentality was on full display when Ohio State played Michigan State Thursday night. With both Kyle Young & Zed Key out, Chris Holtman had to call on a player who wasn't on the Spartans depth chart. Joey Brunk had his best game as Buckeye as the Buckeyes beat Michigan State 80-69. Jay opens today's show talking about Brunk's big game and the Ohio State win. From there, we look at a scouting reports for Chris Olave & Garrett Wilson. Jay uses the time to see if he agrees with the reports that you can find on nfl.com. We close today's show highlighting what Tom Izzo said about Ohio State fans. Throughout the season, Land-Grant Holy Land will be bringing you uncut audio primarily from Ohio State press conference, but also from individual interview sessions. During this episode, we spoke to E.J. Liddell, Joey Brunk, Chris Holtmann, Gabe Brown, and Tom Izzo about Ohio State's 80-69 victory over the reeling Spartans. Much of the conversation focused on Brunk who — unsurprisingly — was not part of Michigan State's game preparation at all. Liddell ceded most speaking time to Brunk, who fielded questions from all of us as well as his teammate Zed Key, who crashed the press conference. Tom Izzo said he was “angry” with his team and admitted that he did not want to double-team Brunk at any point because “He's a guy who averages one point per game.” He also criticized Ohio State's crowd for being weak, but gave them credit for “lifting” Brunk to a great game. We also spoke to MSU senior Gabe Brown, who led the Spartans with 13 points. His answers were very short, showing his frustration. Brown said he “wants to win as badly as anyone” but that his team simply can't defend right now. Sounds familiar! Saturday's Ohio State spring game left us with plenty to analyze and discuss on this week's episode of Real Pod Wednesdays. We finally got to watch Ohio State's quarterbacks throw passes in Ohio Stadium, saw numerous early enrollees impress in their debuts in the Shoe and learned that the bullet is in fact real among other takeaways from Saturday's scrimmage, which concludes Ohio State's spring practice season for 2021.A rundown of some of what we talked about on this week's show: 3:30: 22 minutes of quarterback talk, including why C.J. Stroud looks like the frontrunner but why Kyle McCord should also get a shot to compete for the job in preseason camp 25:30: The other freshmen who stood out on Saturday – Jack Sawyer, Emeka Egbuka, Marvin Harrison Jr. and TreVeyon Henderson – and why Ohio State has to find ways to get them all on the field this year 37:54: The bullet is real! Why we think that new position can make a positive impact on Ohio State's defense, and what else we think about the state of Ohio State's passing defense coming out of the spring 46:45: The under-the-radar players who also shined in the spring game For the final 15 minutes of this week's podcast (beginning at 51:30), we shift gears to Ohio State basketball to talk about the addition of Joey Brunk, what he brings to the Buckeyes and why Ohio State should have one of college basketball's most complete rosters in 2021-22 even though it settled for Brunk rather than landing five-star center Efton Reid.
