How To Create a WINNING Culture in your own life, with the youngest NCAA Mens Head Basketball Coach, Drew Valentine

In a word, Drew Valentine is a winner. He has played a huge role in Loyola University Chicago's rise to national prominence over the last five years and was named the Ramblers' head men's basketball coach on April 5, 2021. In nine seasons on coaching staffs in his career, Valentine has guided teams to the postseason seven times, including three NCAA Sweet 16 appearances, two of which wound up with trips to the Final Four. During his five seasons at Loyola, Valentine has helped lead the Ramblers to a 124-44 overall record, three NCAA Tournament berths, a trip to the National Invitation Tournament, three regular-season Missouri Valley Conference championships and three MVC Championship titles. At 30 years of age, Valentine, a native of Lansing, Mich., is the youngest head coach in NCAA Division I men's basketball. In 2017, he was named to the Under Armour 30-Under-30 Team, presented by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), as one of the top coaches under the age of 30. Valentine made quite a splash in his first season as Loyola's head coach in 2021-22, setting a program record for wins by a first-year Rambler skipper (25), while also becoming the only first-year coach in program history to lead Loyola to a NCAA Tournament appearance.  One of only three first-year head coaches to steer his club to 25 or more wins in 2021-22, Valentine also became the youngest head coach since Todd Bozeman in 1993 to lead his team to a national ranking. Loyola earned a No. 22 ranking in the Associated Press Top 25 Poll in mid-January.  Valentine put his twist on the Rambler program in 2021-22 and once again Loyola ranked among the nation's top offensive and defensive teams in the nation, while also establishing a single-season school record by knocking down 293 three-point field goals. Under Valentine's tutelage, five Ramblers collected All-Missouri Valley Conference accolades, including guard Lucas Williamson, who was tabbed MVC Defensive Player of the Year for the second straight season, and also garnered first team all-league recognition. In four years as an assistant coach on Porter Moser's staff at Loyola, Valentine played a pivotal role in the program's ascension to national prominence, helping the Ramblers to a 99-36 (.733) overall record and a 56-16 (.778) ledger in Missouri Valley Conference action. = For his final two seasons as an assistant coach at Loyola, Valentine served as the de facto defensive coordinator for a Ramblers unit that ranked 21st in the nation in scoring defense in 2019-20 (62.7 ppg) and first in the country (56.1 ppg) in 2020-21. During his four seasons on the Loyola staff as an assistant, Loyola ranked in the top six in the nation in scoring defense three times but it wasn't just the defense that thrived. Although defense has been Loyola's calling card, the Ramblers have also ranked among Division I's best in field goal percentage in each of the last five seasons. The only basketball-focused podcast in the LGHL family of podcasts, co-hosts Connor Lemons and Justin Golba give the latest scoop on the Ohio State Buckeyes as well as all the other happenings in the college hoops world. ‘Bucketheads' will be released every Thursday morning throughout the regular season. During this week's episode, we thoroughly discuss seven-seed Ohio State's matchup with 10-seed Loyola Chicago in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Clearly, the Buckeye fanbase is pessimistic about this game and many folks don't see Ohio State advancing to the round of 32. But are there reasons to be optimistic?  Connor and Justin explain why E.J. Liddell should have plenty of space to make plays and why feeding Zed Key (if healthy) early and often will be critical to the Buckeyes' chances of advancing. They also analyze the intriguing coaching matchup between Chris Holtmann — who has made the tournament every season with Ohio State — and first-year Loyola-Chicago head coach Drew Valentine, who is coaching in his first NCAA Tournament.  They then look at the reasons to be concerned about this game. Can Ohio State stop Loyola's two star guards from blowing right past them, as has been the issue in recent weeks? Will they get the production from Joey Brunk and Key that they need to dominate the glass, and can they take advantage of a weak rebounding team and give themselves second-chance opportunities?  Connect with the Podcast: Twitter: @BucketheadsLGHL Connect with Connor: Twitter: @lemons_connor Connect with Justin: Twitter: @justin_golba Learn more about your ad choices. Coach Drew Valentine's Story: In this episode, you'll hear from Drew Valentine. Drew is currently the Head Coach at Loyola University Chicago. Drew was promoted to Head Coach on April 5, 2021. Prior to being named head coach, Drew was an assistant coach for Porter Moser at Loyola. As you will soon hear, Drew Valentine is all about leading. In eight seasons on various coaching staffs during his career, Coach Valentine has been a part of teams who went to the postseason seven times, including three NCAA Sweet 16 appearances, two of which resulted in trips to the Final Four. However, this podcast is about a young boy who fell in love with basketball watching SportsCenter at the age of four with his dad. Right away, you are going to hear how important Drew's parents are to him and his brother, Denzel. Drew so eloquently expresses his love and appreciation for his parents. Drew also describes the amazing coaching and life lessons learned from Coach Greg Kampe, Coach Tom Izzo, and Coach Porter Moser. At the core of Drew's coaching philosophy is the players he coaches. From having daily dinner with them at training tables after practice to sending weekly encouraging Friday night text messages, Coach Valentine is consistently connecting with his players and re-enforcing the Loyola Culture. As Drew so proudly says: “Culture is Everything.” Drew and his Ramblers are committed to the Culture. Finally, Drew offers some outstanding tips for young coaches in: player development, building player relationships, recruiting, networking, and simply believing in yourself as a coach. This is a wonderful 37-minute conversation about a young head coach who is wise beyond his years! Follow Coach Drew Valentine @CoachDrewLU Follow Tell Me Your Story Coach @CoachKevinDro Buzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched! In this episode I take a look at women's basketball. Taking a look at first the best women college players by jersey number. Then I take a look at the match up between Arizona vs. Stanford and from there keeping with the women I go back in time and look at a lady who started out as a little girl growing up in Claflin, KS then making her way to a college campus in Springfield, MO at the time know as Southwest Missouri State. She became a college phenom and set numerous records. Her name, Jackie Stiles and it was then that Jackie-Mania was running wild. Then with the retirement of coaches one position and maybe two have been filled as Porter Moser has moved on to take on the Oklahoma job as Drew Valentine the brother of Denzel Valentine has been elevated from assistant to head coach. And I close out by taking a look at the Men's Final 4. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/anthony-smith34/support
