In this episode, I sit down with renowned neuroscientist and performance psychologist, Dr. Gary Sailes to unpack what truly separates elite, world-class performers from everyone else. This conversation goes far beyond surface-level "mental game tips." We dive into identity, trust, discipline, and the misunderstood role of control—especially for high-achieving, type-A individuals like you. Dr. Sailes shares decades of experience working with elite athletes across multiple sports and reveals why the best in the world don't just want success… they need it. We explore how structure creates freedom, how letting go creates control, and why your thoughts quite literally shape your performance. In this episode, you'll learn: The critical difference between being "obsessed" and having a true need to succeed Why elite performers trust their training instead of trying to control every outcome How letting go of conscious control actually leads to peak performance The hidden power of structure and why it eliminates emotional decision-making How your identity and beliefs can quietly cap your performance The difference between performance psychology and applied neuroscience A practical journaling exercise to rewire negative self-talk If you've ever felt like you're doing all the right things but still not performing at your highest level—on the golf course, in business, or in life—this episode will challenge the way you think about improvement and unlock a new level of awareness. Purdue's plans for downtown Indy extension and city's move to fix West Street

The IBJ Podcast

Nearly one year ago—July 1, 2024—the urban university in downtown Indianapolis known as IUPUI—or Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis—officially split into two separate campuses. This created Indiana University Indianapolis, a standalone campus in the IU system, and Purdue University in Indianapolis, which is considered an extension of Purdue's main campus in West Lafayette. IU Indianapolis took the vast majority of the land and buildings considered part of IUPUI. The school is focusing in part on research, commercialization and student opportunity in the life sciences and biotech sectors. With its Lafayette extension, Purdue wants to draw more students interested in engineering and business to the university, including through new degree programs such as motorsports engineering and executive education. With a relatively modest amount of land set aside for its Indianapolis operations, Purdue needed to figure out how it eventually could have an outsized impact. It recently revealed its long-term plans—16 buildings ranging from five to about 20 stories on just 28 acres of land in the northwest sector of downtown. In this week's edition of the podcast, IBJ's Mickey Shuey unpacks Purdue's high-density strategy to serve 15,000 students per year by 2075. Mickey also digs deep into perhaps the greatest hindrance to growth in that area—West Street, the wide and heavily trafficked thoroughfare that essentially creates a barrier between the Mile Square and everything to the West. As Mickey reports in the latest issue of IBJ, tearing down that figurative wall is becoming a greater priority for the city of Indianapolis. The Hogsett administration has begun “preliminary discussions” with the neighborhood and universities to develop potential solutions. But any fix likely to come from those talks—whether spanning the roadway with bridges or tunnels, creating a parkway, or adding more crosswalks to slow traffic—will be expensive and likely require consensus from many stakeholders.

Mustafa Abdallah, Effects of Behavioral Decision-Making in Proactive Security Frameworks in Networked Systems

CERIAS Security Seminar Podcast

Facing increasingly sophisticated attacks from external adversaries, networked systems owners have to judiciously allocate their limited security budget to reduce their cyber risks. However, when modeling human decision-making, behavioral economics has shown that humans consistently deviate from classical models of decision-making. Most notably, prospect theory, for which Kahneman and Tversky won the 2002 Nobel memorial prize in economics, argues that humans perceive gains, losses and probabilities in a skewed manner. Furthermore, bounded rationality and imperfect best-response behavior has been frequently observed in human decision-making within the domains of behavioral economics and psychology. While there is a rich literature on these human decision-making factors in economics and psychology, most of the existing work studying security of networked systems does not take into account these biases and noises. In this talk, we show our proposed novel behavioral security game models for the study of human decision-making in networked systems modeled by attack graphs. We show that behavioral biases lead to suboptimal resource allocation patterns. We also analyze the outcomes of protecting multiple isolated assets with heterogeneous valuations via decision- and game-theoretic frameworks. We show that behavioral defenders over-invest in higher-valued assets compared to rational defenders. We then propose different learning-based techniques and adapt two different tax-based mechanisms for guiding behavioral decision-makers towards optimal security investment decisions. In particular, we show the outcomes of such learning and mechanisms on different realistic networked systems. In total, our research establishes rigorous frameworks to analyze the security of both large-scale networked systems and heterogeneous isolated assets managed by human decision makers and provides new and important insights into security vulnerabilities that arise in such settings. About the speaker: Dr. Mustafa Abdallah is a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the Computer and Information Technology (CIT) Department at Purdue University in Indianapolis, with a courtesy appointment at Purdue Polytechnic Institute. He earned his Ph.D. from the Elmore Family School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Purdue University in 2022 and previously served as a tenure-track faculty member at IUPUI. His research focuses on game theory, behavioral decision-making, explainable AI, meta-learning, and deep learning, with applications in proactive security of networked systems, IoT anomaly detection, and intrusion detection. His work has been published in top security and AI venues, includingIEEE S&P, ACM AsiaCCS, IEEE TCNS, IEEE IoT-J, Computers & Security, and ACM TKDD. He has received the Bilsland Fellowship, multiple IEEE travel grants, and internal research funding from IUPUI. Dr. Abdallah has extensive industrial research experience, including internships at Adobe Research (meta-learning for time-series forecasting), Principal Financial Group (Kalman filter modeling for financial predictions), and RDI (deep learning for speech technology applications), which led to a U.S. patent and multiple publications. He holds B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees from Cairo University, with a focus on electrical engineering and engineering mathematics, respectively.

As DePauw's historic Mendenhall lecture comes from within the Christian tradition, we believe this is a crucial time for faith communities to reflect critically about how theology shapes the way we actually live in the world. This one-night symposium will explore the phenomenon of Christian nationalism, particularly in American history and culture. Some of the questions we will consider include: How is Christian nationalism defined and invoked in our public discourse? What is the role of Christian nationalism in public life and polity right now (deep into an election year)? Is Christian nationalism primarily a theological identity, or a political one? How does Christian nationalism challenge the ideal of pluralistic democracy? How are people drawn to Christian nationalism, and how do those who are not talk across the divide? How do questions of race and ethnicity factor into the conversation? Andre Henry is an award-winning singer-songwriter, the bestselling author of All the White Friends I Couldn't Keep, a trusted global voice on nonviolent struggle for social progress, a creative truthteller, and a “tomorrow-maker.” Brian Zahnd is the founder and lead pastor of Word of Life Church in St. Joseph, Missouri; and the author of eleven books, including Sinners In the Hands of a Loving God, When Everything's on Fire, and The Wood Between the Worlds. This week Data Over Dogma gets political as we welcome Dr. Andrew Whitehead. Dr. Whitehead is an Associate Professor of Sociology at IUPUI, director of the Association of Religion Data Archives, and author of the incredibly timely book American Idolatry: How Christian Nationalism Betrays the Gospel and Threatens the Church. As a sociologist, Whitehead is bringing receipts as he discusses the current rise of racist, xenophobic power-seekers within American Christianity, and why that rise is... you know... bad. Bad for the country and democracy, but also very possibly bad for Christianity. We'll also discuss some of the Bible verses that have been used by Christian Nationalists, and figure out if those verses actually support the arguments they're making.
