Sklars performing at Mark Ridley's in Royal Oak this Thursday at 7:30PM (doors open at 6:30) tickets: Supersklars.com We will be there having drinks with copies of VICTORS to sign after the show. If you can't make a weeknight they're performing 2 shows on Friday and Saturday night. 1 hour and 10 minutes The Sponsors Thank you to Underground Printing for making this all possible. Rishi and Ryan have been our biggest supporters from the beginning. Check out their wide selection of officially licensed Michigan fan gear at their 3 store locations in Ann Arbor or learn about their custom apparel business at undergroundshirts.com. Men's Basketball at Michigan State Starts at 1:00 We still have to do a podcast. Dave went to go enjoy the weather instead. This game was over in the first half. 3/24 on threes is not good! Last year's team would've given up at halftime, this team at least fought back a little. What has this team improved upon since their trip to California? Michigan doesn't have a guard that can generate offense. We thought a lot of these transfers would've turned a corner by now. This team still exceeded expectations for the season, the way they got there was just not how we expected. There's the potential for Michigan to not win another game this season.   2. Men's Basketball vs Maryland Starts at 21:11 This game was similar to the Michigan State game in that Danny Wolf and Vlad Goldin were the only ones scoring. Maryland got to play a Maryland game and Michigan didn't have a plan.  3. Lukewarm Takes and Hockey vs Penn State Starts at 32:11 Just some lukewarm takes this week. Go see the Sklars in Ann Arbor this Thursday-Saturday! Hockey is now just 42% to make the tournament after getting swept by Penn State. Root for Western Michigan, Denver, and Quinnipiac. Friday's game was pretty fun at least! Despite giving up bad goals. It didn't feel like a super talented roster. Imagine if Michigan got goalie Trey Augustine instead of Michigan State. Goal-tending was unclear going into the season and seems like it will continue to be unclear.  4. Football Spring Practice Starts at 57:47 Spring practice starts soon! Is Bryce Underwood already the guy? Running backs have a top two, it's a battle for #3. Will the offensive line look similar to last year? There are some lower level transfers coming in but offensive linemen can flourish in the right system. Please hype up a wide receiver. Hopefully the two transfer defensive tackles come through. They'll be fine but it's still a huge downgrade. Cornerback will be an interesting position, we want to hear that Jyaire Hill is rounding the corner. How is Rod Moore's health? Who's the punter?? With Special Guest Ian Boyd from InsideTexas.com and America's War Game The Sponsors We want to thank Underground Printing for starting this and making it possible—stop by and pick up some gear, check them out at ugpmichiganapparel.com, or check out our selection of shirts on the MGoBlogStore.com. And let's not forget our associate sponsors: Peak Wealth Management, Matt Demorest - Realtor and Lender, Human Element, Ann Arbor Elder Law, Michigan Law Grad, Venue by 4M, Winewood Organics, Sharon's Heating & Air Conditioning, Autograph: Fandom Rewarded, Champion Circle, who just launched an app where you earn rewards for things like reading MGoBlog and listening to our podcast, SignalWire where we are recording this, and introducing Royal Oath Insurance Group, which is Owen Rosen's new firm. Featured Musicians: Ki5 The Video: [After THE JUMP: The things to be said.] --------------------- 1. Texas Preview wsg Ian Boyd: Offense starts at the top They've added a lot of RPOs. Probably want to bypass the defensive tackles and attack the linebackers in space. Ewers is now pretty good every down but hasn't taken the step to great, has some tooly receivers to throw to but of them Bond is the one who can really do a lot of different things (the others can do one thing really really well). Think Michigan should play their base, keep guys back, don't get too creative. If you blitz them on 3rd down they're going to set up a makeable 4th down. 2. Texas Preview wsg Ian Boyd: Defense starts at 22:13 They lost the best two DTs in CFB and their backups won the job; they don't really get low so Texas fans are a bit worried about getting bullied by Michigan's run game. Texas was playing light boxes vs CSU's Air Raid but Ian and Alex agree they're rolling safeties down: Ian would play single-high and have Michael Taaffe play off by 8 yards and check Loveland then attack the run. They've been quarters base but run a lot of switch coverages and mixed coverages. Michigan might have to use Marlin Klein. Decisive matchup will be if they have really fixed their DE and CB issues, but can Michigan pass that much? Probably going to be a cat-and-mouse game as Michigan wants to get back to their power run game and do enough to keep Texas from zeroing in on it. 3. Texas, Texas Fans, and Where are the Vibes? starts 47:19 We talk to Ian about how Texas sees themselves, which is the Michigan with an ag school who hates them and a big rival who cares only about football and killing their rival. Also love winning their conference and booing the commissioner. Sark is very high among their list of coaches: move to SEC means the school has gotten more serious about football (and less serious about not being a degree factory). Think this era is a golden one for UT football because the SEC is going to give them Georgia and their rivals but not loading them down. We talk a little about the stickball ramifications for both conferences, and then talk about what factors fans should consider when projecting the future of realignment. 4. Fresno State After Review starts 1:19:19 Let's do the Wink talk because I want to inject some nuance: they technically accomplished what they wanted, which was to get Keene throwing off his back foot. There were nine interceptable passes in this game. Wink could very well have been setting up a sim pressure-filled game after coaxing Texas to build an RPO gameplan. Or he could be the guy who just blitzes. Seeing a lot of awareness from Josaiah Stewart, Will Johnson was setting up his pick six. Offensively the Giudice thing is worrisome, Priebe and Bredeson were off from their usual but veterans should put it back together. We don't talk about Mullings/Edwards much because, well, you all saw, but yes: Mullings is their better running back at the moment and Edwards should be a big part of the passing game. Think Marlin Klein might be a secret weapon, because the receivers are not helping. About the Featured Musician: Ki5 Ki5 is a songwriter and vocalist from Ann Arbor that makes music using only his voice and a looping machine. Kyler is releasing an EP on 9/20 called Lake of Gold, and will be playing at the Ark on Friday night April 26th, and at Venue on 9/27 (hopefully not during the Sklars show—I'll update when I have a time). With special guests Randy & Jason Sklar, here to promote their show on 9/27 (Friday before Minnesota). Things Discussed: Seth on early: Jaishawn Barham? He was a great player at Maryland. You don't have to be your best self to be playing next to Ruben Hippolite, but you do if Michigan needs you to beast up. But remember this is a hard defense to learn at linebacker. Is Wink gonna Don Brown it? No. He'll run MORE man because he's got the guys, but it's part of the toolbox, not The Toolbox. They'll show a lot of blitzes. Dom Giudice? We all learn how to say it because he's apparently the starting center, and Evan Link is the starting right tackle, as of last Sunday. Recruiting story: Harbaugh offered without telling the rest of the staff. Link: Makes sense if they didn't think the other guys were able to do it. If he's even he's ahead. What kind of offense are they going to be? Alex Orji's kind. But Warren has earned some snaps too. During break: Name every player who was ranked below Giudice. Lowest was Emmanuel Casseus. Sklars tell the story of good directing on Better Call Saul.

Ricky White returns to Michigan Stadium with a lefty mobile QB who can sling it a little. Not a great OL, but tricksome in a this is the next evolution of the spread 'n shred sort of way. Defense gave up a lot of yards to Bryant—probably is going to get boatraced. They play a Buck 425 with a lot of up-transfers, but defense was their HC's specialty. 2 and 3. The Sklars starts at 17:17 and 45:13 Jason and Randy join us as we talk Lions, Clemsoning, Dabo's version of “NIL” and calling out Brian Ferentz. Where were the rushing yards? Venue will have the noon games on, and provide an a la carte tailgate spread, food truck with four beers on tap, and bar. Tickets will be on sale soon at the Comedy Showcase--stay tuned. 1. Offense vs ECU Starts at 1:00 Michigan football has returned! The red hat guy chased Brian out of the stadium at the end of this game. ECU kicked The Sad Field Goal to keep their scoring streak alive. Train made all the right people upset so bravo for that. Initial results are that JJ McCarthy has made The Leap and has taken the training wheels off (and also has the ability to “extend the neutral zone”). Are teams going to continue to stuff the run and ask JJ to beat them, especially if he says “ok”? Running dive five times in a row just to get Donovan Edwards a touchdown probably wasn't necessary. The play action approach in this game was much better than last year. Myles Hinton probably isn't going to be the starting tackle once the starting line is set, Trente Jones came in and immediately started moving people. Barnhart at left tackle seemed a lot more smooth. It was an excellent day for the receivers. Roman Wilson doesn't block like Ronnie Bell but can get over the top of a safety playing 11 yards off the line. AJ Barner's blocking wasn't encouraging, Bredeson is probably the second blocking tight end. Is Colston Loveland so good that he's just boring now? [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP] 2. Defense vs ECU Starts at 42:32 Michigan rotated five DTs and five DEs and there seemed to be no drop-off. Hausmann looked really good, he'll be a dude. You could also move him at either middle or weak side linebacker. The secondary was missing Will Johnson and Rod Moore, Josh Wallace looked really good. The Almost Interception was a great play and an encouraging sign for the season. Sabb looked competent out there, ECU isn't going to stress safeties much though. The way Derrick Moore moves around the field, you have to imagine he'll break out eventually. Kenneth Grant - OH LAWD HE COMIN. Josiah Stewart is looking like a fairly one-dimensional passing down kind of guy. 3. Hot Takes and Special Teams Starts at 1:05:57 Tommy Doman has a cannon of a leg, so punting is back in a good place. His kickoffs were also bombs. James Turner had a really weird game at kicking. Missed an extra point and a long field goal but made the best field goal of his career. We did not see Alex Orji returning punts, sadly. Jake Thaw as a punt returner didn't look comfortable at first. Plenty of opportunities this season to field punts, at least. Nice to see Michigan notice a defense that's aggressive at stopping the run and airing it out sooner, rather than waiting a couple quarters. Keep an eye on Kalel Mullings as the season goes on. The scoreboards are bigger but the replay part of the scoreboards are not. Do we need to keep cycling what 7:30pm games are on that night? Officiating was… kind. That targeting on JJ was egregious, it was exactly the kind of hit the game is trying to get rid of. 4. Around the Big Ten with Jamie Mac Starts at 1:33:48 Ohio State - 23 Indiana - 3 Ohio State really couldn't do much against the Indiana defense… Egbuka and Harrison combined for 34 yards. This is not going to be the #1 offense in the country in SP+. They're still getting stuffed on 3rd down. Indiana had a great defensive game plan but couldn't do a thing on offense. McCord does not look comfortable being aggressive throwing downfield. Michigan State - 31 Central Michigan - 7 We probably didn't learn much about the Michigan State defense because Central Michigan has a freshman QB who can't do much. Noah Kim had an awful first quarter performance. This was too much of a fight against a bottom half MAC team. Alante Brown was knocked out of the game and went back in later - it was a Shane Morris incident again. Illinois - 30 Toledo - 28 Toledo held a lead for most of this game because Illinois couldn't get out of their own way. 90 yards of penalties in the first half but they got a pick six in the second half. Iowa - 24 Utah State - 13 Did not meet the 25 points required to save Brian Ferentz's career. Cade McNamara resumes his role as a game manager, but they scored on their first two drives. Couldn't do much more after that. Penn State - 38 West Virginia - 15 Drew Allar's first start went very well against a defense that's not supposed to be very good, but an encouraging sign for Penn State. Penn State running game was okay. West Virginia could possibly be really bad? Penn State missed two field goals. Minnesota - 13 Nebraska - 10 You can take Scott Frost out of the state but you can't take the Scott Frost out of the football program. Nebraska had a 94% chance to win this late into the game. Minnesota could not run the ball at all. Nebraska threw three picks, losing in the most Nebraska way possible. Maryland - 38 Towson - 6 Moving on! Wisconsin - 38 Buffalo - 17 Wisconsin has moved to an air raid passing offense and put up 300 yards of rushing between their two backs. Air raid not fully installed yet. Tanner Mordecai was 24/31 for 189 yards and two interceptions. Braelon Allen had 7 catches for 25 yards. Mo Linguist is Buffalo's head coach so they have a good secondary. Purdue - 35 Fresno State - 39 Purdue is going to take some time to rebuild, it's year zero. Despite just playing Purdue last year, we don't recognize any of their receivers. Get Donovan Edwards to this game and let him feast. Northwestern - 7 Rutgers - 24 Nope! MUSIC: “Love T.K.O.”— Teddy Pendergrass “Potions”— Day Wave “Chosen to Deserve”—  Wednesday “Across 110th Street”

Non-Conference Starts at 1:00 The non-conference is bad. That is all! David is excited for the ECU game! Last year was the Pirates' all-in season but now most of their good players are gone (except for their genuine 4-star quarterback). They're kind of like Mid-Tennessee State from a few years ago. UNLV has a new coach. UNLV discussion dissolves into discussions about Dug (as in like the show 'Dug'). They weren't ranked #12 at anything on The Enemy Ranked! That Ricky White is back. Connor Bazelak returns for Bowling Green (possibly with a better offensive line).  [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP] 2. B1G East Starts at 16:44 Indiana is really rough, there's a QB battle between two players nobody's really heard of. They lost a lot of guys to the portal. They did get Wisconsin's offensive line coach so there will be immediate improvement there at least. There could be 7-8 transfers starting on defense. Rutgers has a path to get to bowl eligibility, but it's a rough one (and involves beating Michigan State). They have a decent defense at least, but the offense won't be doing much. Michigan State loses Peyton Thorne and Keon Coleman in the spring which is pretty devastating for an offense that already was struggling. It's probably going to be Noah Kim at QB, and he probably won't have many open receivers to choose from. Their offensive line probably can't get worse, though. Maybe they go from 104th in Football Outsider's average line yards to 90th? The defensive line might be okay but their linebackers still can't run. Michigan State has a really tough schedule too, and they sold their home game against Penn State to Ford Field. Last year they had one thing and now that thing is gone. Maryland is the definition of a 7-on-7 program, they have no offensive or defensive lines. Taulia might be running for his life. Don't forget, Josh Gattis is the new offensive coordinator! Besides Saquon Barkley, what hyped up Penn State running back has picked apart Michigan? They're talented but will the offensive line carry them this season? They reload a bit at wide receiver. Drew Allar is a pure pocket passer (he's slow but not Navarre slow). Penn State has always had a quarterback that could solve problems with their legs and Allar doesn't bring that. They'll need their offensive line to be what it's supposed to be. The defense could make up the deficiencies on offense. DB Kalen King was such a huge miss for Michigan that Penn State took advantage of. Their depth is really good at linebacker.  Ohio State still has a quarterback competition and a lot of questions about the offensive line. They took a left tackle from San Diego State who wasn't a starter. The defensive ends didn't produce as much as they were supposed to last year and they ate up the offensive line in the spring game. We got to see how Kyle McCord performs under duress at least. There's no data on Devin Brown. Could this be a developmental season for their quarterback? When was the last time Ohio State had that? The wide receivers are still world-enders and the running back room is the second best in the conference. OL Donovan Jackson is in the running to be the best guard with Zak Zinter in the Big Ten, so there's that. What do you know about Jim Knowles' 'Jack' position? Defensive end depth doesn't have someone stepping up. It's not too much to ask that one of your mega five stars lives up to their expectation. Denzel Burke is popping up on first round draft boards because of his metrics but he's not been impressive, he didn't have much improvement in his 2nd year. Lathan Ransom had one of the worst games in The Game in recent memory, welcome back! If Sonny Styles hits, he could be Dax Hill ++. Who in their secondary is getting a star in the diagram? So far nobody. Tommy Eichenberg is the biggest star. Year two of Jim Knowles got better at Oklahoma State, but his year twos anywhere else weren't better. Why does every team have to have their own cute term for a nickel?  3. Hot Takes and B1G West Starts at 1:29:21 Takes hotter than the Michigan football program gosh darn it. Brian goes on a wonderful hot takes rant and had good news for Ohio State fans in Tampa.  Before the Northwestern scandal, you could maybe look at their schedule and see 3-4 wins. They even have a real quarterback now (and A.J. Henning). But now the coaching is a mess so they might be 1-11 again. Alex has a surprising amount of things to say about Northwestern. Matt Rhule isn't re-building Nebraska, he's just building Nebraska. They retained their offensive line coach, at least. The defensive line is a disgrace. Maybe they can weasel their way into six wins. They recruit talented players but those players just don't develop at all. Purdue might not be as bad as some people think, but it could also very well be a year zero scenario. First year head coach Ryan Walters has some work to do. The gang is split on whether Minnesota is good or not. They have a right tackle who can't pass block but is a monster in the ground game. Minnesota likes to fill their holes with transfers from Western Michigan. Tyler Nubin is a projected first round pick at safety. They might beat Michigan once or twice out of ten. There's always a game that's weirdly close and this could be the one.  Alex's biggest thing on Illinois is: NONE OF YOU BELIEVED HIM. Defense brings back a lot and should still be solid. Losing Chase Brown is big and nobody projects to be as good. The offensive line returns three starters and Isaiah Williams returns at receiver so there are still some good pieces. They won the Big Ten West lottery by not getting Michigan or Ohio State.  Iowa - if the offensive line could just be a 2017 Iowa OL then they would be really good. They would always have a tackle who was drafted highly. The wide receivers are questionable but they did get a transfer from Ohio State. Erick All will add some needed depth. If Cade McNamara is behind an offensive line that is 128th in line yardage then the game is over before it starts.  Wisconsin is going to look so weird this year. They have so much talent on this roster but how quickly can they adapt to the new coaching scheme? Tanner Mordecai is the third best QB in the conference? The offensive line is developed for a completely different scheme. The defense was 14th in SP+ and brings seven guys back. If the scheme comes together they're the favorite of the west, if it doesn't then there are a lot of teams that could step up.  4. Predictions, and Final Takes on the Season Starts at 2:09:04 Who wins the Big Ten West? Who wins the Big Ten East? Who makes the playoff? IS TEXAS BACK? How attainable is actually winning the National Championship? Michigan might not be recruiting at Georgia's level but is anyone better than Zak Zinter? Defensive Line Starts at 1:00 This podcast is actually two hours about Coco Gauff- I'm getting word from our sponsors that we must resume football discussion. Kris Jenkins is looking to be a first or second round pick, he's the best pass rusher in the interior. His nickname is "The Mutant" and it shows. Mason Graham is the dude next to him, the best freshman DT since... ever? Freshman DTs just aren't that good but Mason Graham was good. Kenneth Grant, God's gift to football, is in the lineup, but might be a year away from fully realizing his ability. Rayshaun Benny showed some flashes in the Spring Game and is probably behind Kris Jenkins. Rumor is Cam Goode is in better shape coming into this year. The freshmen probably won't contribute much but they're on their way. Edge position is pretty set in stone and will probably be fine, not great. Jaylen Harrell is reliable but a little small and could drop back into a linebacker role. He's had some oddly optimistic draft projections. There's reason to be optimistic about Josiah Stewart. Braiden McGregor feels like he's never fully recovered from his knee injury, despite being physically shaped like Aidan Hutchinson. Derrick Moore has Taco Charlton potential.  [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP] 2. Linebackers and Cornerback Starts at 39:43 Junior Colson has had his ups and downs at Michigan but is coming in with a lot of hype. He's a similar mold to Jonas Mouton. Would have some +2s in UFR, which are amazing, but then would end up grading negatively overall. He could be the proverbial X-Factor - you can see the potential in the All-American talk. Michael Barrett is one of the most 'football guys' on the team and it's so great to see him mold into a good linebacker. He has a lot of versatility which helps Minter call different plays. Ernest Hausmann is a great get from a not great Nebraska defense, he looked great in the Spring Game. Jimmy Rolder saw some decent play time towards the end of last year. Jaydon Hood probably won't crack the two-deep. Will Johnson could possibly be the best cornerback in the country, did not get toasted by Marvin Harrison Jr. Could he be following the Charles Woodson path? Mike Sainristil? Mike Sainristil! Responsible for the best Michigan defensive play since...? We play "Remember Some Dudes" with just one guy. Blake Corum, Mike Sainristil, and Michael Barrett created a culture of "football dudes". Biggest question on the whole team is "who is going to be CB #2"? Josh Wallace is a great pickup from UMass and was probably recommended by Don Brown. In terms of best case scenario going into the Ohio State game, though, it's probably Jyaire Hill. Amorion Walker is on the Freaks List but that finished product is probably a year away. There are issues but not like the Rich Rodriguez era "Never Forget Banner", these issues are simply "put a safety over the CB that needs help and let Will Johnson go 1-on-1." Whoever comes out of this mess is going to be decent, and all you really need is someone to be decent.  3. Hot Takes, Safeties, and Special Teams Starts at 1:15:58 Takes hotter than Coco Gauff at the Southern and Western Open. Is there a conspiracy to hide Ja'den McBurrows from us?? Rod Moore is possibly one of the top available safeties in the NFL draft. He's a three-star out of Ohio (Ohio State recruited Lathan Ransom, oopsie). Makari Paige is a very reliable tackler. Best safety duo since who? Quinten Johnson is a fast guy who hasn't quite put it together yet. We haven't heard much about Sabb. Zeke Berry looked pretty good in the Spring Game. If one of the starters gets hurt then there could be issues. Caden Kolesar would be pretty good as a third safety for most of the year. Tommy Doman is the punter and a six-star! James Turner comes in as a kicker and is 32 for 33 inside the 40. We've heard all about Alex Orji as a punt returner. Mullings as a punt returner? Eamonn Dennis as a kick returner makes sense but we need Alex Orji for the memes. The long snapper is- 4. Defense in Summary Starts at 1:44:06 It's a little shakier than the offense, there are still a few questions, but it won't be a disaster. Need to get pass rushing out of the actual pass rushers. It could still be a top 10 unit and could still be better than last year. Lots of time this season to figure it out. Biggest concern on the defense (besides CB #2)? Breakout player? SP+ final finish? Who's your dude? Alejandro, we need you to publish the mattress story.  MUSIC: “Pull Up”— Lil Mosey “Rolling”— Michael Kiwanuka “Pretend”— Alex_G_offline “Across 110th Street”

Quarterback and Running Back Starts at 1:00 Savor your back-to-back Big Ten Championship winning Michigan Wolverines. Seth guaranteed a win against Ohio State last year and he was right. It's JJ, what level is JJ at? The TCU game obscures it but he's very good at not throwing the ball into bad places. How would you attack JJ McCarthy if you're a defense? The only thing that really de-rails this season is if he gets hurt. Is there any reason to think that JJ won't make a leap, similarly to Shea Patterson (consensus is no, he should make the leap)? Brian thinks Jack Tuttle is the likely backup and would be a viable caretaker, everyone else thinks it'll be Davis Warren. There is a very mature and very professional conversation about Alex Orji. Apparently he's the kick returner, but could he also be an actually useful asset in short yardage? Is this the best running back duo in school history? Is Blake Corum the best running back in Michigan football history? He's fast, hard to tackle, and just rarely makes mistakes. Donovan Edwards played last year with a broken hand and a knee injury (and also destroyed Ohio State in the process). His decision making improved greatly so while healthy, he should be fun to watch. CJ Stokes and Kalel Mullings are up next, CJ Stokes had some unfortunate plays but hopefully improved and gets play time. Does Tavierre Dunlap last the year?  [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP]   2. Receiver and Tight Tend Starts at 1:08:30 Wide receiver has been a "problem" position with some fans but Cornelius Johnson and Roman Wilson are both probably draftable. If this is the biggest problem, it is a good problem. Seemed like there were a lot of balls that Cornelius Johnson could almost catch from JJ, just need to lock down that connection more. Maybe not a 900 yard guy but still a good option. Roman Wilson will continue to play in the slot as a speedster. He'll be the most open the most often (he was more open than Cornelius on one of the touchdowns against Ohio State). You should check out Roman Wilson's YouTube channel. The other outside receiver is Tyler Morris, who seems to have a telepathic connection with JJ. He might not get a lot of targets but we're comfortable with him as a starter. Peyton O'Leary is definitely going to play and get some receptions this year. Semaj Morgan is a lot like AJ Henning as a recruit. Have Michigan fans ever been so sure about a tight end being an All-American as Colston Loveland? Did you know he was a wide receiver in Idaho two years ago? In Idaho. Does he get the most targets this season? You can line him up as a receiver if you really want to, he can be a matchup nightmare. AJ Barner had to endure Indiana's offense last year, but he should be serviceable at Michigan. Matthew Hibner has shown flashes in the past, but after that the depth gets a little light. There are photos of Marlin Klein playing with the 1s. Max Bredeson is technically a fullback but is also basically a tight end.  3. Hot Takes and Offensive Line Starts at 1:56:18 Takes hotter than Mel Tucker's seat after he loses to DeVry University. This is the deepest offensive line any of us can remember - we would be comfortable with some of the 3rd stringers. Zak Zinter is the top guard on some draft lists and is probably at his ceiling, Trevor Keegan should be recovered from an injury and have some room for improvement this year. Center is a battle between Drake Nugent and Greg Crippen. NFL folks love LaDarius Henderson for his athletic traits. Giovanni El-Hadi looked good last year up until the Illinois game and will probably be a starter next year. Coaches are going to rotate starters in the non-conference. Karsen Barnhart has been getting a lot of camp buzz - plays really well against bad opponents but really struggles against anyone better than him. We would expect Trente Jones to win the right tackle job, but we're hearing other things from camp. Nice to see Myles Hinton since he was heavily coveted as a recruit. He struggled at Stanford, but that may have been a product of Stanford's offense. Hinton moves really smoothly for how big he is. LaDarius Hunderson is probably the starting left tackle.  4. Offense in Summary Starts at 2:38:51 This offense looks to be the best of the Harbaugh era. What offense in Michigan football history would you take over this one? JJ is just Zen Harbaugh. What is the biggest concern of the offense (other than someone getting hurt)? Who is your breakout player? Who's your Dude? Final SP+ rank? Offense vs Maryland starts at 1:00 There was some First Actual Game clunkiness but the boxscore looks fine! Was that actually the fastest touchdown in Michigan football history? JJ missing some deep shots isn't concerning, more concerning is him breaking the pocket to run around and then run around some more and then run around some more. There was also some poor decision making, he looked like a second year quarterback. So Blake Corum is pretty good. Incredible awareness and elusiveness. Was also able to grind out short yardage which was the only part of his game that was missing. Brian officially calls him the best running back he's ever seen at Michigan. Pass protection was pretty good. Schoonmaker's run blocking has been fantastic and offers NFL-level complexity to the run game. Tight end depth is good enough that they might not actually miss Erick All too much moving forward. Can't run a trick play based off of a play you didn't run. [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP]   2. Defense vs Maryland starts at 36:50 Very little pass rush which is concerning. Tagovailoa had all day to pass. Interestingly when Maryland brought in their backup the pass rush started to work. A lof of things that Seth said wouldn't translate from Colorado State have not translated into this game. Some of the blitzes weren't weird enough. Linebackers were not shooting the gaps, Nikhai-Hill Green was greatly missed. The secondary looked great, though! Mike Sainristil has absolutely crushed all expectations this season. Shout out to RJ Moten for batting down the ball on his own to make the interception. Maryland will probably end up being one of the best offenses Michigan plays so in hindsight this was a pretty solid performance as a whole. There were some flagrantly missed holding calls.  3. Hot Takes, Special Teams, and Game Theory starts at 1:05:24 Takes hotter than Adrian Martinez any time he plays Oklahoma. Talking about going for it on 4th down - do you call a timeout? Seeing Miami run plays that didn't work for Michigan last year was... interesting. Can't punt around mid-field if you're just running it down their throat, especially when Blake Corum is running for 8 yards per carry. Special teams should've kept kicking it to Tai Felton instead of through the endzone... just in case.  4. Around the Big Ten With Jamie Mac starts at 1:37:05 Forty five minutes of Minnesota vs Michigan State wooo! (Not actually, sorry). This domination is even worse than the final score. Michigan State has two division II transfers in their secondary. Kenneth Walker deserved two Heismans for what he did with this team last year. Minnesota is suddenly the favorite to win the West. Penn State played Central Michigan pretty even for most of the game which is fairly alarming for the Nittany Lions. Sean Clifford was 1-for-11 on "shots downfield". How does... Iowa score on Michigan? Their turnovers don't seem random. Iowa has had 40 drives start in their own territory, 15 of them have entered opposing teams' territory, and only six of those have resulted in points. 1-11 Northwestern whose only win is Nebraska and 1-11 Nebraska with zero power-five wins is on the table! Florida Atlantic outgains Purdue by 80 yards but Purdue wins, though they lose their starting QB. They fumbled the kneel down! Welp, Ohio State looked good, but Wisconsin didn't even look like they were trying. This was just every other Ohio State vs Wisconsin Big Ten Championship Game.  MUSIC: Too Close for Comfort Theme Song "Get On This"--Ugly Duckling Blossom Theme Song “Across 110th Street”

Offense vs UConn starts at 1:00 Name a random Michigan walk-on QB in the comments! Eight quarterbacks participated in this game, seven of them completed a pass. Lots of Speed in Space in this game because UConn allowed it to happen, the coaches adjusted to the opposing defense which is encouraging. Receivers might need to get used to scramble drills with JJ. Offensive play calling is by committee again. Oluwatimi looks great at center, the rest of the offensive line has stuff to work on. Isaiah Gash may actually be the short yardage back? Otherwise it's Corum. Ronnie Bell knocked the rust off, only target he didn't catch was almost the coolest catch ever.  [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP]   2. Defense vs UConn starts at 36:05 Not sure how much to take away from this game. UConn completed four passes, Michigan had seven players complete passes (we haven't decided what this rutger is called). Mike Sainristil looks like he was recruited to play defense. Continued production from Rayshaun Benny and Mason Graham is encouraging because no matter who you're playing, you're still pushing back a 300 lbs guy. Lots of rotation along the line, probably less of that as the season goes on. Braiden McGregor started and got a lot of play time into the second half. Default defensive passing down package looks to be a dime package. Defense as a whole is progressing better than we thought they would. No standout star but everyone is doing their job.  3. Hot Takes, Special Teams, and Game Theory starts at 1:03:09 Takes hotter than RGIII after he hears something vaguely sexual. Michigan has ten quarterbacks that could start at Rutgers. Punt return touchdown will probably happen again, Jay Harbaugh continues to be amazing at everything he touches. Jake Moody's field goal attempt would've been good from 55 but hey, that was fun. There is... not much game theory to actually discuss.  4. Around the Big Ten With Jamie Mac starts at 1:26:46 SMU had 85 more yards than Maryland but lost on fumbles, interceptions, and missed field goals. We thought Maryland was a team with a good offense and meh defense and that opinion has not changed. Penn State looked impressive against Auburn without much Sean Clifford action. Nicholas Singleton could be a problem. Shout out to Sean Clifford for lasting this long without being completely Hackenberg'd. Could Michigan actually end up not beating a ranked team and get bumped out of the playoffs as a result since everyone but Ohio State is bad. Michigan State gets two goal line stands and still loses by nine. Pretty alarming that they gave up nearly 400 passing yards. Kenneth Walker might've been more important than even we thought. Northwestern is probably the 3rd or 4th best team in the state of Illinois. Purdue outgained Syracuse by nearly 200 yards and gets beaten by a dime at the buzzer - how did they lose this? Indiana is 3-0 but can they get to a bowl? It took Iowa seven hours to score 27 points.  MUSIC: "Skinny Dipping"--LA Exes "Selfish"--Slum Village "Play Me"--Neil Diamond “Across 110th Street”

Let's talk about JJ. 11/12 on passing and the one miss hit Ronnie in the facemask. Harbaugh announces JJ as the starter for UConn without even checking the tape. JJ made some opponent invariant throws that we're excited about. Cade had every opportunity to keep his job and he just didn't execute. How can you explain his dip in performance as anything but him looking over his shoulder? CJ Stokes looks like a Karan Higdon type runner. Max Bredeson had a nice catch and started to outrun the entire defense! Donovan Edwards vs Blake Corum. Offensive line performance after shuffling people around - there is some room for improvement. Did the offensive line have a revolt against Cade when they gave up those sacks?? (No, no they did not). [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP]   2. Defense vs Hawaii starts at 35:20 *slaps Seth on the wrist* Not a whole lot to say here. The 3rd string defense was... maybe not great? Rayshaun Benny looked pretty good. Michael Barrett was an insider linebacker which you probably don't want to do against Wisconsin (who Michigan doesn't play anyways). RJ Moten just needs to catch one. Amorion Walker on offense and defense? Did Rayshaun Benny bring back the belly rub??  3. Hot Takes, Special Teams, and Game Theory starts at 51:43 Takes hotter than JJ McCarthy on Saturday night (there it is). Dave vs The Voice, find out what happens. Is it a sad field goal if you're Hawaii? Shouldn't Hawaii be getting a lot of great transfers? Because how awesome would it be to just live in Hawaii for four years (like their kicker/punter). AJ Henning punt return discussion - has some good returns, might've made a couple iffy decisions. No field goals but Jake Moody had a kickoff field goal. Brad Robbins punts it to the moon. Michigan scored touchdowns from within the red zone! 4. Around the Big Ten With Jamie Mac starts at 1:13:39 10-7 is the perfect ¡El Assico! score. Kirk Ferentz, why have you not fired your son? Iowa blocked two punts and scored seven points?? Could this maybe be the beginning of the end of Kirk Ferentz? Georgia Southern put up 642(!!!) yards against Nebraska!? Both of these teams went 3-9 last season. Scott Frost was fired just after the recording of this podcast so that is not discussed. Coming into this game, Nebraska was 214-0 when scoring 35 or more points at home. Now they are 214-1. Wisconsin outgains Wazzu 401-253 but loses... This is not good Washington State either. Northwestern can't complete a 21-0 deficit in a 31-23 loss to Duke. Is Illinois... the best looking team in the West right now? Every other Big Ten game was a blowout.  MUSIC: "Regulate"--Warren G "No Beginner"--Serengeti "20Min"--Lil Uzi Vert “Across 110th Street”

Offense vs Colorado State starts at 1:00 Should JJ McCarthy be the God Emperor of Michigan Football? Ok maybe, but let's Devil's Advocate it first. We were told that Cade made a major step-up in the offseason and he didn't... look like it. It feels like JJ time but then also why was the QB battle 50/50? Alan Bowman looked fine? CAT ORJI. Injuries on the offensive line, backups have some things that can get fixed. Not much to say about the wide receivers since they all only caught one pass but the blocking was really nice. Roman Wilson's touchdown run happened because of Ronnie Bell's block. No procedural penalties and also they were checking the sidelines with plenty of time on the play clock. [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP]   2. Defense vs Colorado State starts at 35:52 The headline is... edge rushers?? Might be several weeks before we can tell just how good they actually are but they did everything we could ask them to do. Derrick Moore was recruited as speed off the edge and if he ever learns a move, watch out -- it looks like he might've learned a move. There were plural 4th down sacks... Braiden McGregor was not as effective. Offseason concern was that nobody was separating themselves at edge rusher and now maybe that was because there was actually depth. Everyone has passed the Taylor Upshaw line. Defensive tackle looked dominant and did things that were encouragingly independent of the opponent. Brian is the Mazi Smith Guy. Junior Colson seemed to play almost every snap. Kalel Mullings is a weird case of playing a lot of snaps on both sides of the ball - if you really need him to fill linebacker depth why are you risking him at running back? Cornerbacks, not much action other than Will Johnson got beat over the top. Good job, Rod Moore, for catching a ball that landed right in your chest. Michigan had a plan for tempo!  3. Hot Takes, Special Teams, and Game Theory starts at 1:07:57 Takes so hot that they're several hundred degrees cooler than Brian was at noon in the stands at the game and he had a pop and he spilled it and AGH. Not a whole lot to talk about, Michigan's special teams players are from around 1860 and they're all great. AJ Henning punt return decision discourse. That poor Colorado State punter. Brad Robbins kicks the ball insanely high. BRAD ROBBINS MUSTACHE. Only one kick return, Brian wants the old kickoff rules back.  4. Around the Big Ten With Jamie Mac starts at 1:33:05 Iowa 7, South Dakota State 3 in a game with NO TOUCHDOWNS. 21 punts, 16 first downs! 166 total yards against an FCS team! Spencer Petras has scored the lowest QB Rating in a win since 2013 at 1.1. Penn State cannot run the ball (they have not had a 100 yard rusher in 17 games). Sean Clifford took a pretty bad hit to the knee. Rutgers finally gets a victory over Boston College in 11 tries. They have an ok running game, they do not have a passing game. Rutgers had 1st and goal at the 9 and ended up punting on 4th and goal from the 43 (but hey they pinned it down to the 1). You would be SHOCKED to hear that a Scott Frost team blew an 11 point lead (in BOTH halves). Nebraska gave up 527 yards to Northwestern. Now the Irish think Northwestern is an offensive powerhouse. Michigan State might miss Kenneth Walker this year. Western Michigan even had the ball down 8 at one point in the 4th quarter. CJ Stroud looked surprisingly shaky, the offensive line didn't look like the greatest.  MUSIC: "The Great Suburban Showdown"--Billy Joel "Car Wash"--Rose Royce "The Good Stuff"--Ben Lee “Across 110th Street”

Remembering Gary Moeller starts at 1:00 Welcome to a very special mid-summer podcast which starts out with a discussion of the corn in France. Brian and Seth reflect on the sad passing of Gary Moeller, who passed away last week at the age of 81. Gary was a very important step in the modernization of Michigan football, particularly the offense, and left the program in such a state when he left that they were able to win a national championship in two years. Listen to the "coach's audio" of Desmond's 4th and 1 against Notre Dame in which Gary Moeller asks a very important question. Rest in peace, Gary. [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP] 2. Big Ten Expansion starts at 13:44 Hello USC and UCLA, welcome to the Big Ten? These teams have not really dominated their conference since the Pete Carroll days but this is a huge financial blow to the PAC-[10]/[12]. Should the Big Ten just go for 20 teams? Also what does this do for the actual fan experience? Going to play UCLA in the Rose Bowl every once in a while is fun but Seth misses just playing Illinois (editor's note: I also miss playing Purdue). Maybe the Big Ten should just do away with non-conference games and do a 12-game schedule. What was the point of scheduling UCLA for this season if they're just going to cancel it (the game that got replaced with Hawaii)? If you could add four more teams, who would you pick? 3. Recruiting starts at 33:37 The 2023 recruiting class is trending from disastrous to generically disappointing. Feels like some position groups are not getting the treatment they should be getting and that is hurting commitments. It also does not help that Jim Harbaugh was flirting with the NFL and the staff is not taking full advantage of NIL possibilities. This incoming recruiting class has very long arms.  4. Hot Takes and Coaching starts at 50:53 Takes so hot they could be the temperatures in continental Europe right now (everyone's hot takes voice is a bit rusty). Time for performance-based conference relegation shuffles at the end of every season?? Tracy Smith is the new baseball coach. Brian dives into Tracy's past and what it means for the future. He had a lot of success at Indiana but not much success at Arizona State - Alex cites locker room and culture issues at Arizona State (which may have been more of an Arizona State problem than a Tracy Smith problem). Mel Pearson still does not have a contract and the report on his investigation is what is holding it up. Spring Game - Offense starts at 1:00 It's been so long since there was a spring game we could actually talk about. Instead of a punting exhibition we got Donovan Edwards and Blake Corum smack-talking each other from across the field. It was fun. Davis Warren looked to be functional, Bowman maybe not as much. Yes, Alex Orji's name is pronounced the way you think it is. Mullings might be the closest to replacing Hassan Haskins as the power back (Wisconsin recruited him for running back, after all). Idaho... Almost impossible to grade the offensive line based on how much it was mixed around but the starting five are probably decided anyways. Comment below if you think Seth should UFR the Spring Game! [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP] 2. Spring Game - Defense starts at 27:13 All eyes on Will Johnson and Mike Sainristil, who both looked good. Going to need the corners to step up this year. Not sure if there's anyone to replace Dax Hill in the slot, it might be Sainristil. Have yet to see McBurrows who is still recovering from injury. Hill-Green looks to be atop the linebackers (he got pulled early meaning he's a guy). Back-up linebackers are pretty meh. If Brian was a walk-on QB he would wear 37 so that if he completed one pass he would be the best #37 of all time. In general, the defensive line did not get obliterated which is encouraging. Mason Graham might be Ryan Glasgow 2.0. Raequan Williams is the MSU player Seth can't remember. Derrick Moore is on his way to be a player. Braiden McGregor got mauled by the tight ends. Moten looked like more of a leader at safety. 3. Hot Takes and Basketball starts at 51:40 Takes hotter than Caleb Love merchandise and NIL rights. Double pass should be the flea flicker of 2022 - Brian wants a flea flicker hook and ladder. DeVante' Jones has declared for the NBA draft but Hunter Dickinson has not. Moussa would likely get drafted if he goes, Hunter might not. Michigan needs shooters from the portal. Kansas State combo guard Nijel Pack is someone to keep an eye out for in the transfer portal but he'll be heavily recruited by everyone. Seth thinks Michigan men's basketball has some of the best coaches in the Big Ten, the team was limited by shooting and roster mis-management. 4. U.S. Soccer starts at 1:34:22 Brian has run out of things to talk about and has decided to talk about U.S. Soccer and the World Cup. How many times will Brian say "Michigan" instead of "U.S."? U.S. plays great at home but not on the road. Can the U.S. handle the climate? Brian expresses heavy feelings about Clemens. They were higher quality, and Nova was 30% from their contested threes, and that was the way Michigan could win this game but the shots didn't go in. Also the shots didn't go in. We run out of ways to say that. [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP] 2. Postseason starts at 16:48 Who's coming back? Houstan probably. Diabate on the knife edge. Dickinson we think we can talk around to it. Both? Hnnnggh.. Johns? Eh. Who's in the portal that Michigan can get? Then we go through next year's playable roster. 3. Hot Takes and Hockey starts at 48:46 Wisconsin fans must be livid at Will Smith. Brian gets his USMNT takes in, in fairness to Brady Hoke. We talk about when to pull your goalie in a game where Michigan's goalie kept it from being 4-4 when Quinnipiac suddenly gained the momentum—some of those were flukes though. Look ahead to the Frozen Four. 4. Women's Basketball starts at 1:34:22 Incredible run ends the same way their Big Ten run did: without Brown for the stretch. Michigan couldn't keep up with the speed of the Vols' guards but it didn't matter because Tennessee hadn't played Eli "Hooks" or anything like Dickinson, who turned questionable possessions into good ones. Huge game for Williams, but for four turnovers it's the Brooks game. We can rely on Collins because he's so quick. We know what this looks like: Xavier Simpson. 2. Colorado State starts at 29:20 The Frankie Collins game. What he did to Isaiah Stevens changed the game. Michigan also managed to hold Roddy outside, which when you're taking away usage from him it's going to less effective players. Those less effective guys unfortunately were canning all of their threes, and all the bounces went the Rams way, which led to the frustrating parts of the first half. Medved did a great job to get Hunter Dickinson switched onto tiny guys. Solution was as soon as they got some space Frankie took it away. Also one turnover! Also 65% from two! 3. Hot Takes and Villanova Preview starts at 44:07 Defending Rick Barnes, a new shot clock rule based on icing. Too hype on Frankie and Terrance? Nova: They're small, they shoot, they bring more smallness and shooting off the bench. #1 team at free throws. 46% of their shots are threes. Can Michigan keep up with Dickinson scoring? The fickle mistress of the arc will decide this game. Gillespie played against Michigan in the national championship game, has come very far since. Big East was a shooting league--hopeful they're not ready for Big Ten bigs. 4. Hockey Big Ten Tourney Champs & Tourney Preview starts at 1:12:24 Minnesota fans in Rod Marinelli Arena livid at obvious calls >>>>> Allentown regional. Seth is at fault for the ending of the Minnesota game, but it was a clinic from 1 minute in to the rest there at the Bobby Ross center. This felt different than previous games at Wayne Fontes Rink: fans were really into it and that made it an epic game you really wanted to win. It also secured the first overall seed and basically the dream scenario for the tournament, since Minnesota State got both NoDak and NoDam, and Michigan got a couple of teams who will actually play hockey. Frozen Four favorites? Certainly. But single-elimination hockey in front of zero fans is stupid.

Previewing Colorado State starts at 1:00 Michigan is in the tournament and opposing sports fans are mad! Colorado State is probably the best draw for Michigan - they are the worst 6-seed in the field by some distance. The gang discusses Colorado State's roster. Hunter Dickinson is bigger than most Mountain West players. The Rams are excellent at defending twos but will give up a lot of open threes, Michigan can't have a 16% day. [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP] 2. Potential 2nd Round Match-Ups starts at 20:48 It's probably not going to be Longwood. Tennessee is the best 3-seed in the field (two others are Big Ten teams that they wouldn't rematch Michigan with) - they've lost one game since the end of January. The Vols are the #3 defense in the country and wreak havoc with speed on the perimeter. They're not a juggernaut offensively. Better than having to play any of the #1 or #2 seeds, though. Tennessee has fast guards and are #8 in the country in take-aways. Need neutral-court Caleb Houston to hit half of his shots to help give Hunter Dickinson 1-on-1 matchups. Tennessee shoots well from three but not as well from two - Michigan needs to exploit this. 3. Hot Takes and Big Ten Predictions starts at 40:14 Takes hotter than Indiana fans who are like "why-do-we-have-to-go-to-Dayton-because-we-won-that-game-and-you-did-not-win-that-game-and-we're-just-going-to-ignore-what-happened-the-rest-of-the-season-cuz-that-doesn't-count-for-us-at-all-it's-just-the-one-game-THAT'S-WHAT-COUNTS." The Michigan win/loss pattern is a re-occurring theme. Not much optimism about a Big Ten team winning it all - bad news for Brian's annual bracket pick of Iowa winning it all. What's Wisconsin going to do when a non-Big Ten ref tells Brad Davison "you can't do that"? 4. Hockey starts at 1:00:01 Michigan beats Notre Dame at their own game in the coolest Yost environment in a long time. Michigan got a penalty for... embellishment? It felt like Michigan was cursed when the score was tied 1-1, but Michigan scored and held Notre Dame to four shots in the third period. Michigan is locked into the first or second overall seed in the NCAA tournament. Michigan comes into this game as one of the worst defenses in the country in terms of generating turnovers - they had 11, almost one in five of Ohio State's possessions. Despite no Juwan Howard, Hunter Dickinson, adverse whistles, and Caleb Houston in "road mode", they pull a win out. Brian knows a surprising amount about Joey Brunk. Encouraging play from the freshmen off the bench, especially Bufkin's dagger three.  [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP] 2. Iowa starts at 21:55 Iowa shot 58% from three ¯_(ツ)_/¯ Keegan Murray and Kris Murray account for 42 of Iowa's points, Michigan can cover one of them but not both. Diabete had 28 points in the first Iowa game, only four in this one.  3. Reflecting on the Regular Season starts at 32:45 Michigan was a pre-season top five team and ended up on the bubble all season until now. What happened? Michigan had the #3 toughest schedule in America. Michigan finishes #31 in Kenpom, Big Ten Champion Wisconsin finishes #30. DeVante' Jones needed time to adjust to the Big Ten. Frankie Collins didn't shoot as well as expected most of the season. Caleb Houston was supposed to be a wing but ended up being a forward. Moussa Diabete exceeded expectations on offense but wasn't there on defense. Brandon Johns seemed to disappear this season. There are no real wings on this roster.  4. Hockey vs Michigan State starts at 54:02 What does Michigan have to do to get hockey muppets?? Brian showed up to the second game five minutes late and it was already 2-0. Is there anything else to say other than "Michigan State is bad"? Some guys got their first goals which was a nice thing to have. Children of Yost didn't even do the chant after the 8th goal in the second game. Michigan gets Notre Dame next - the team that has been Michigan kryptonite all season. Michigan could possibly pass Minnesota State for the #1 overall seed. Ohio State might not make the tournament at all now. Illinois starts at 1:00 Third straight week of a win that points Michigan towards the tournament and a loss that points them back to the bubble. Michigan finally shoots pretty decently against Illinois but the Illini shoot 59% from three. Curbelo doesn't look like a great player coming into this game but shoots 5-for-7 on FGs. The Hunter Dickinson mid-season Renaissance seems to have cooled down - offense and defense both seem to be off. DeVante' Jones is looking like a legit Big Ten point guard. Can Michigan use NIL deals to get everyone back next season? [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP]   2. Rutgers starts at 21:05 Caleb Houston was the Kenpom MVP after going 5-for-9 from three. Rutgers shoots 17% from threes - Michigan gets to win a game because of the other team's poor three point shooting this time! Some contested pull-up jumpers from Rutgers even missed! Michigan needs a defensive wing next year, who's it going to be? At this point, just get into the tournament.  3. Hot Takes and Gimmicky Top Five starts at 34:33 Takes hotter than Illinois shooting a three from the logo. Everyone lost this weekend to keep the spotlight on Carol Hutchins for being the winningest softball coach in NCAA history. Who do you give the ball to on this team to shoot a game-winning three? Return of the Gimmicky Top Five! Top five things Juwan Howard is doing with his spare time. Brian discusses pretzels. Your podcast editor cannot relate to Brian's number one :(  4. Hockey vs Notre Dame starts at 57:44 A very frustrating end to the regular season. Officiating has been inconsistent all season and this weekend was the cherry on top. Michigan is tied with Bowling Green with the most penalty minutes on the season (517 minutes). Michigan does need to be smarter about cross checking opponents from behind, especially with a conference title on the line. Playing Notre Dame is like a microcosm of the NCAA tournament. Michigan has dropped to #2 in Pairwise behind Minnesota State and probably won't fall any further because there's a huge gap between #2 and #3. The End of the Wisconsin Game starts at 1:00 We apologize for a bit of technical difficulties with Brian's mic this episode. Brian and Seth discuss the end of the Wisconsin game. Brad Davison remains the dirtiest player in college basketball and Greg Gard defends him. Suspensions have been issued, time to move on with the season. [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP]   2. Wisconsin (During the Game) starts at 12:12 Just a bad shooting game all around. This is either a 66% three-point shooting team or a 16% three-point shooting team and it doesn't seem to matter what the opposition is doing. When they get hot shooting from the 4 they annihilate Purdue. When they don't, this game happens. Turns out wings are important in basketball. What happened to Brandon Johns? 3. Hot Takes and Iowa starts at 27:32 It's already pretty hot out there but the gang comes up with some hot[ter] takes. Michigan has another horrible three-point shooting game against Iowa but it doesn't matter because Moussa Diabete goes 12-15 in FGs from the floor for 28 points. Shut down Keegan Murray and Iowa doesn't seem to know what to do. Kobe Bufkin getting 10 points off the bench was encouraging, Michigan needs a better performance from the bench overall this season.  4. Hockey vs Ohio State starts at 44:01 Michigan needs four points this upcoming weekend to clinch the Big Ten regular season championship. Was Luke Hughes's goal the best we've ever seen? (Not for Brian because he's old and has seen more goals). Ohio State's thing is that they have a very good goalie but Michigan has a good goalie to match and better skaters. Michigan's defense in the 3rd period of the Saturday game was clinical. Losing those players to the Olympics might be one of the best things to happen to this team.  MUSIC: "Bringin' Home The Rain" -- The Builders and the Butchers "My Love Forevermore" -- The Hillbilly Moon Explosion ft. Ohio State starts at 1:00 Series split between Ohio State and Purdue probably helps tournament résumé overall. Michigan schemed a lot of nice, open looks but just couldn't get the ball to drop. Overall trajectory of the team is still optimistic considering the improvement of the defense. If Dickinson isn't having a good game against any legitimate competition then the odds of winning drops considerably (zero assists, 0-for-2 on 3s in this game). Michigan's ball screen offense, including passes, is better this year with Devante' Jones than it was last year with Smith, he just needs to improve 3-point shooting. [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP]   2. Purdue starts at 17:43 Michigan scorches the top team in the conference because they hit their shots - particularly 12-21 on 3s. Hunter Dickinson being used as a decoy to get open looks has been successful in the playbook. Jaden Ivey was coming off ball screens all day in the first Purdue game, Michigan traps him in almost every screen this game. Seeing Michigan make that adjustment was a good overall sign for the coaching staff. Hunter Dickinson played really well despite being a bit injured. Big games this season are going to come down to RNG (random number generator).  3. Football starts at 32:45 Michigan hires Jesse Minter as defensive coordinator - good continuity candidate after Macdonald. Has coached college for a while so he should know what he's getting into in terms of college recruiting. Jay Harbaugh moves to safeties coach and will probably be good at that, too. Offense will probably go back to Harbaugh being the CEO with run and pass game assistants. Defense will need more good ideas to generate pressure because you won't have Aidan Hutchinson to generate pressure for you.  4. Hockey Series vs MSU starts at 44:36 Ok fine, Salt-N-Pepa's "Push It" might not be the most sexually explicit song ever, but Michigan has retained the most phallic trophy in college hockey - The Iron D. Michigan State is really bad at hockey and has been for quite some time. Their defensive philosophy is to have six goalies where everyone just tries to block a shot. Just completely non-competitive hockey games despite Michigan being without four players in the Olympics. Have there ever been four goals (two by each team) on one penalty kill before? Michigan needs to stop getting unnecessary majors. It will be a close finish between Michigan, Minnesota, and Ohio State for first place in the Big Ten. Purdue starts at 1:00 We begin with a lengthy discussion about Tim Brando and songs with sex appeal. At times Michigan looked like they were going to get run out of the building against Purdue, and yet they were able to get within a point in the 2nd half. Michigan doesn't have a wing with the size to defend a player like Jaden Ivey. Hunter Dickinson's shooting development continues. We may look back at how frustratingly close this game was come tournament time.  [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP]   2. Nebraska starts at 22:50 Only 23 minutes for Hunter Dickinson in this game. This game slipped out of hand because he was on the bench for so long (and yet he finished the game with only two fouls). Is this what Michigan is going to look like next year if Hunter Dickinson goes pro? Michigan's three-point shooting is Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde this year. Most of the things that could turn this team around are probably a year away. 3. Hot Takes and Jim Harbaugh starts at 35:35 Takes hotter than a Hunter Dickinson mid-range jumper. Quarterbacks coach Tom Brady?? Discussions about Jim Harbaugh's interview with the Vikings. It feels like Michigan wasn't able to take full advantage on the recruiting trail with beating Ohio State and winning the Big Ten. Talking a bit about Josh Gattis and his bitter departure. What can Jim Harbaugh do right now to revive the morale within the program after his flirtations with the NFL and losing offensive and defensive coordinators? 4. What's Next? starts at 53:49 Every time they hire a new coordinator it seems like it's out of left field so is there even much of a point in trying to guess who they hire or promote next? Larry Foote's name is mentioned. Jesse Minter seems somewhat Mike Macdonald-esque. Matt Weiss might be a co-offensive coordinator. Otherwise anyone's guess is as good as anyone else's.  MUSIC: "Push It"--Salt 'n Peppa "Car Radio"--Spoon "Dark Red"--Steve Lacy “Across 110th Street”

Michigan played out of their mind against MSU but just couldn't get shots to land. Brian strongly disagrees with the coaching decision to go away from drop coverage in this game. Northwestern is an ultimate ref show. Michigan shoots 67% from three against Northwestern to overcome only having one offensive rebound in this game.  [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP]   2. Harbaugh Stuff starts at 20:12 Jim Harbaugh is interviewing with the Vikings. There are also rumors of the Dolphins taking a shot. Kind of a bummer that Jim Harbaugh has one successful year and then possibly wants to bolt, but could this be Harbaugh's last chance at the NFL? If Michigan does lose Harbaugh, who do they hire next? Is it an internal hire? Some brief discussion on the next defensive coordinator. 3. Michigan Hockey at Wisconsin starts at 33:29 Michigan sweeps a bad Wisconsin team despite being without two players to Olympic obligations. Michigan's defense is scoring around one goal per game and has become a powerful offense on this team. May need to sweep the series against Michigan State during the Olympic break to feel comfortable with winning the Big Ten. Tune into The Michigan Hockeycast tomorrow for a more in-depth analysis!  4.  starts at 47:11 Takes hotter than the opposite of the shooting of the first half against Michigan State. Indiana starts at 1:00 Michigan climbs to 18 spots in the NET rankings to reach the fringe of the NCAA Men's Tournament bubble. Everything seemed to come easy in this game. The emergence of Hunter Dickinson's three point game will change how teams have to prepare for him. Parallels are drawn between this Michigan team and last season's Ohio State team. Diabaté was extremely energized in this game. This feels like a young team that is finally turning a corner. [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP] 2. Maryland starts at 19:05 Michigan runs out to a big lead and was never threatened against a not-great Maryland team that has a surprising lack of talent on it. Frankie Collins has an alley-oop from Eli Brooks, followed by a play Brian cannot describe with proper words, followed by two air-balled threes. Doesn't seem like a shooter right now but can be ball dominant. DeVante' Jones has been more efficient and less turnover prone, which may be a big reason Michigan has looked better in recent weeks. 3. Hot Takes, Harbaugh Thoughts starts at 33:50 Takes hotter than Hunter Dickinson in the last couple of games. Brian's take gets some form of "wow" from everyone who heard it. Can Michigan de-throne Stanford?? Latest rumor is the Raiders don't want to make a move for Harbaugh because Jim Harbaugh is weird. NFL people are even weirder, though. Brian and Seth try to dissect what might be going through Jim's mind during this offseason.  4. Hockey vs Minnesota starts at 57:35 Alex and David come in to talk hockey. Michigan is up to #1 in the Pairwise rankings, also tied for first place in the Big Ten with Ohio State. Big Ten is really strong this year - even Penn State who is last in the Big Ten is ranked 24th in the Pairwise. Minnesota's rink is hard to adapt to - it's bigger and the nets like to come off easily. Michigan losing players to the Olympics is mitigated by a bye week, but those players will be gone for the Ohio State series. Brian is so so excited for Michigan to be the #1 overall seed in the NCAA Hockey Tournament and that they'll play somewhere 1,000 miles away.

Georgia's defense has a Devin Bush and even Blake Corum in space couldn't get around him. Run game didn't get anywhere and Cade's 3-4 yard passes at a time wasn't able to get Michigan down the field. JJ is probably the one with the ceiling to compete with teams like Georgia.  [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP] 2. Defense starts at 18:56 We were hoping Michigan could make up the talent gap by scheming up some plays and playing smarter - turns out Georgia out-schemed Michigan. Georgia seemed prepared for all the nuances of Michigan's defenses that they could exploit. Seth gives some optimism about the future of this defense. 3. Hot Takes, 2022 Offense starts at 29:56 Takes hotter than... Miami? Brian has opinions about tacos. Quarterback situation for 2022 looks to be really good. Unclear if there's a bruiser at running back to replace Haskins, but Michigan's backfield could be one of the most explosive in the country. Michigan loses a blocking tight end in Joel Honigford but the returning unit looks good. Center replaces Andrew Vastardis with a possible upgrade and the rest of the line looks to be in a good place - can any of them be an All-American? Add Ronnie Bell to the returning receiver group and they might be one of the best in the league.  4. 2022 Defense starts at 52:40 Most of the defense returns for 2022. Losing the best defensive end duo in the country hurts, it's unclear on how to replace Ojabo and Hutchinson. Defensive scheme may need to be restructured a bit, but the recruiting seems to be planning for that. Junior Colson probably has the biggest growth potential at linebacker. Losing Brad Hawkins and (we assume) Dax Hill will be difficult, may need to play true freshmen at some point. Dropping a five-star true freshman (Will Johnson) at cornerback will be feasible next season. It's looking like Michigan could be in the same situation next season as this one: going into the Ohio State game with everything on the line. The Sklar Brothers are a post-modern take on a stand up comedy duo. Neil Strauss of the New York Times once wrote “Their comedy accepts the reality of being twins but does not use it as a crutch. Instead, they work their physical and mental similarities and correspondences, their status as imperfect carbon copies of each other. In their comedy the straight man is often an echo.” Jason and Randy have released 6 critically acclaimed comedy albums, have had two Comedy Central Half Hour Presents specials, and currently have a one hour stand up special on Netflix, titled “What Are We Talking About” and another one hour special that premiered on the Starz Network in May of 2018 called “Hipster Ghosts”. Randy and Jason are also writers, directors and actors appearing in a wide variety of shows from Entourage to It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia to Curb Your Enthusiasm to Better Call Saul. They are currently recurring characters, the Drs. Green, on TruTV's Those Who Can't. However, they are perhaps most well known for their show Cheap Seats, a cult hit that appeared on ESPN Classic for 77 episodes. Their popular sports/comedy podcast View From the Cheap Seats is available on the Starburns Podcasting Network. Their hit podcast Dumb People Town with cohost Dan Van Kirk is currently being developed as a narrative animated show with Sony for You Tube Premium. Most importantly, Randy and Jason are fathers and husbands living in Los Angeles. (not with each other — that would be weird.) Offense vs Iowa starts at 1:00 Michigan fans channel their inner European soccer league by singing apropos of nothing, having wandered the desert to achieve this joy. Iowa gives up their longest run of the year and longest pass of the year on back to back drives. How fast is JJ McCarthy?? What can Donovan Edwards not do? Playing conservatively after going up 14-3 was the right call. Cade had a bit of a rough game. Iowa was aggressive against Michigan's ground game, didn't generate much outside the Blake Corum run. Schoonmaker had a couple of the best catches of his career. [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP] 2. Defense vs Iowa starts at 29:20 Iowa's offense being bad met all expectations. Iowa cut their game plan around stopping Aidan Hutchinson. Despite this, Aidan wins the MVP with one sack and four tackles. Stats fail to encompass Aidan Hutchinson. Nice to see younger players come in and make a few plays. 3. Hot Takes, Special Teams, and Game Theory starts at 43:22 Takes hotter than that one Iowa fan in the stands who was clearly swearing about a 3rd down play call. Is Aidan Hutchinson good enough to fix the Lions?? How many Big Ten teams could Donovan Edwards start at QB for? Michigan wins the special teams battle. Iowa has an excellent punt returner who finishes the game with negative yards. Multiple punts almost get blocked before the actual punt block. Eviscerating Iowa special teams felt like the real "win with cruelty" moment of this game. 4. Miscellaneous starts at 1:01:07 Michigan draws Georgia in the playoffs. Don't immediately pencil in Alabama, Cincinnati is #5 in SP+ and gets an Alabama team that struggled against a struggling Auburn team. Georgia is Iowa but with the #2 offense in the country. The line is -7.5 which seems quite large for how well Michigan has been playing. Hockey had a weird split against Minnesota this weekend. They're setting up nicely for their annual Mel Pearson second half of the season rally. Very important win for basketball against SDSU. Frankie Collins is looking like the starting point guard. Hunter Dickinson's 3-point shooting is quite the development. MUSIC: “Pump It Up ”—Endor “Mr. Brightside”—The Killers “Party Hard”—Andrew WK “Across 110th Street”

Harder to appreciate a blowout with what's coming next. What other team is walking to their doom at the end of the season every year? Cade goes 75% on completions for >10 yards per completion - helped out by some spectacular catches. Donovan Edwards has more receiving yards in this game than Chris Evans did in any single season. Hassan Haskins only gets 78 yards at 3.9 YPC, does not help that Cade will not keep the ball on a read. JJ McCarthy shows some flashes in this one, including a reminiscent Denard-first-snap play. McCarthy extends a play that Cade probably would have otherwise thrown away.  [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP] 2. Defense starts at 26:48 Ground game defense feels a little bit concerning considering Maryland is a team that does not run well. Not great signs for Ohio State. Solutions on what to do when being blatantly held - just go down? Did a nice job holding Rakim Jarrett to two receptions. Michigan is #4 in SP+, and yet are 8.3 points behind Ohio State, which is huge. Hard to be happy about being #4 because we have a Sword of Damocles.  3. Hot Takes, Special Teams, and Game Theory starts at 41:54 Takes so hot they look like Mike Locksley after his team takes multiple red zone penalties on the same drive. Locksley's facial expressions are far too relatable to an exasperated dad. Jay Harbaugh - best coach on staff? Not a hot take, just a question. Kick return trick play won't work against Ohio State since Ohio State doesn't pooch kick.  4. Around the Big Ten, wsg Jamie Mac starts at 56:44 Michigan State's pass defense was, uh... thoroughly exposed. Michigan just has to not lose that badly to go to the Rose Bowl. Nebraska doing what Nebraska does - losing to a ranked team by one score. Nebraska is ranked #33 in SP+, Michigan State is #34. Braelon Allen is emerging as a consistent runner for Wisconsin. Minnesota plows through the erotic rotting corpse of Indiana football. Indiana is a loss to Purdue away from being winless against Power 5 teams for the first time since Kevin Wilson. Looking at the boxscore, how did Iowa win by 10? P00N results in Brian setting the rules for all M00N related scoreboard jokes. Rutgers couldn't score once against a flu-ridden Penn State team.  MUSIC: "The Man"--Aloe Blacc "You're Dead"--Norma Tanega "Love the One You're With"--The Isley Brothers “Across 110th Street”

Offense starts at 1:00 Brian vs tweeting as a personal battle, Seth has become dangerously optimistic. False starts make first few drives extremely difficult. Penn State's passing defense has been lights out, Michigan has been the closest to Ohio State in creating passing yards against Penn State. Only two carries for Donovan Edwards, this was Hassan Haskins' game. How is Michigan not successful at short yardage? Missed Blake Corum in some situations.  [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP] 2. Defense starts at 22:24 Penn State offense takes the field, gives up sacks. Four fumbles in this game and Penn State gets all of them. Sean Clifford looks absolutely battered and beaten on the sideline all game. The defense bashes Penn State's mesh on 4th down. Jahan Dotson gets relatively held down in this game, only 61 yards on 9 receptions. Secondary got got a couple times but overall exceeded expectations. Penn State receivers also helped out a lot.  3. Hot Takes, Special Teams, and Game Theory starts at 43:09 Takes hotter than a Penn State fan after James Franklin called a fake field goal from the two where you got to throw it to your kicker and then he fumbles it backwards because he's the kicker and it's just like what are we even doing? Can't complain about red zone offense when you score from the 21. Punt safe team was not punt safe in the 1st quarter. Fake punts are alright, fake field goals are the dumbest thing ever. Nobody seems to quite understand the rule of catching a ball on a punt before the endzone. Basketball and hockey lightning round, Michigan defeats racism 77-49.  4. Around the Big Ten, wsg Jamie Mac starts at 1:16:00 Minnesota just can't get by Iowa under PJ Fleck. Wisconsin continues to roll in the 2nd half of the season, did Michigan play Wisconsin at just the right time? Northwestern is just a dead fish at this point. Maryland drives to the MSU 16, 23, 24, and 39 in the second half and get no points from any of those drives. Comfortable win for the Spartans, despite having a secondary that is butt. Michigan State scores on a flea flicker for the 4th(!!) time. The biggest win for Rutgers on the road against a conference opponent?? Against pre-season #17 Indiana??? Ohio State - is scary.  MUSIC: "All of the Time"--Jungle "Digits"--Young Thug "Freebird II"--Parquet Courts “Across 110th Street”

Too many commercials, it was cold, and they played the Applebee's song. Haskins Hurdling a Fool count is up to five. Injuries compromised the offensive gameplan a bit. There was a literal line of players trying to get into the injury tent. Cade only had 18 pass attempts, JJ has another yakity-sax play, Brian apologizes for trying to sing Yakity-Sax but sang Calliope instead.  [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP] 2. Defense starts at 26:40 Defense - great performance against not great offense. Zero sacks from Hutchinson due to being doubled and held. Ojabo continues to be a freak of nature. Junior Colson is developing nicely. Some key Indiana players getting injured makes the defensive performance even murkier to grade. Nine games in and still not much to be said about the cornerbacks.  3. Hot Takes, Special Teams, and Game Theory starts at 40:44 Takes so hot they're the inverse of how we all felt for 3 unnecessary hours in a November night game. Editor's note: I was not prepared for Seth's take. The entire state of Indiana, minus West Lafayette, should not exist at night. DJ Turner fills in for AJ Henning on punt returns, proceeds to get two kick catch interferences on a single play. Brad Robbins is secretly good but nobody really talks about it. Tweet about Brad Robbins, get a like.  4. Around the Big Ten, wsg Jamie Mac starts at 58:26 Purdue beats Michigan State with a play from Tecmo Bowl! Brohm claims to have stolen if from a YouTube video of a high school team years ago. Purdue now in a four-way tie with Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Iowa for the Big Ten West. Does Ohio State look beatable or was this a one-off bad game (spoiler: it's the less fun answer). Nebraska is 1-6 in Big Ten play and outscoring their Big Ten opponents. If you're Nebraska... it... still kind of... makes sense to keep Scott Frost? Iowa and Northwestern in the Battle of Backup Quarterbacks. Seven punts in a row to start the game sounds about right. This podcast team was never fooled by Iowa's top five ranking. Brian demands a Grover Bortolotti on Michigan's team. Brandon Peters: 7-of-9 for 80 yards for a win over the number 20 team in the country! Michigan can't get away from shooting itself in the foot, especially on substitutions and ill-timed false starts. Cade's passing game emergence in this game was an unexpected but pleasant surprise. The Andrel Anthony show results in an all-time hot take from last week. Is he the new number one receiver? Does any of this matter? Seth's best guess on the JJ fumble is that Corum might not have had the correct playcall. Erick All has 10 catches! [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP] 2. Defense starts at 22:13 Defense takes a step back, particularly at defensive tackle. Lots of rotation at defensive tackle and leaving the starters off the field. Michigan was not prepared for Michigan State's tempo. Linebackers were fine, cornerbacks held up for the most part. Moten had a great shot at an interception and Dax Hill got beat deep on the MSU 4th down touchdown on a tip-of-the-hat throw.  3. Hot Takes, Special Teams, and Game Theory starts at 34:36 Hot takes so hot they would be sitting innocuously on a Michigan message board. AJ Henning Punt drop one of only a few missed opportunities on special teams. Moody kicks seven field goals, four of them count. Robbins' botched fake punt run should've just been a called fake punt run. Frustration about field goals and red zone decision making, including a Charlie Weiss comparison (miss you big guy xoxoxo). 4. Around the Big Ten, wsg Jamie Mac starts at 52:57 Michigan fans may be miserable, but so is most of the Big Ten. Nebraska pulled a Dave Brandon ticket sale scheme and Adrian Martinez got booed en route to four interceptions. Minnesota rows the boat to their own destiny. Wisconsin starting to look like Wisconsin as they also control their own destiny. Jamie has few notes about his Hoosiers losing to Maryland as Seth attempts to pronounce Tagovailoa correctly. Rutgers vs Illinois, happened. Does Ohio State have holes in the secondary that Michigan could exploi- nope, not even going to finish that sentence. Penn State actually getting the benefit of the doubt on holding non-calls. MUSIC: “How Not to Drown”—CHVRCHES feat. Offense starts at 1:00 Brian has joined the Cade Haters, does not get the support he was expecting from Seth, who still hates no-read zone reads and trying to be a split zone team with a QB it doesn't fit. Downfield accuracy was more about decisions not to throw guys open. Pre-snap reads are good but post-snap decisions are not. Is a fair quarterback. The running backs are stars—Colson might be Brian's favorite of those he's watched. Haskins showed us 1890s football. Erick All blocked. Guards…okay, but Zinter is missed. 2. Defense starts at 31:20 We start with the One Bad Thing because it's the only score. Blamed that on Colson not funneling because they were replacing Ross with Hawkins, and on Moten eating a block for NO GOOD REASON. Good game from DJ Turner, who effectively passed Green? Screens breakdowns until they shadowed them Ross. DL rampant—no holds for Hutchinson though. What's a guy gotta do? 3. Hot Takes, Special Teams, and Game Theory starts at 46:04 They did block a punt, overwhelming the shield like the days of yore. Henning had one return, let one bounce to the two. Game theory: we wanted to go for it on the 4th and 2 because Northwestern isn't having a two-minute drill from the 2 yard line so chances are you get a punt with 1:45 left and then get into field goal range again…if you don't score a TD. 4. Around the Big Ten, wsg Jamie Mac starts at 1:??:?? Winning QBs had no yards as the rushingest of the rushers won every game. The OT fest: Penn State got back their quarterback but he didn't run downfield (turned down his one opportunity and took a sack). Really missed Mustipher since Illinois was plowing them with QB sneaks for 2 yards on every 3rd and 2 and 2nd and 2, and powering their way to big gains for both backs. Wisconsin has another vote for winner of a silly West. Minnesota-Maryland was standard Gopherball. Ohio State's offense…let's end it there shall we? The Frontcourt (Fours and Fives) starts at 1:00 Hunter Dickinson was pretty good, awesome in fact, and then just plain awesome as they doubled him and took away his favorite shoulder. He can develop that and/or a three. Moussa Diabate is going to be an IMPACT defender, can play the four, might develop a shot, switchable nightmare. Versatility with Brandon Johns able to play 4 or 5. He was more commanding as a starter, team X factor. Terrance Williams is about to bust out. Will Tschetter: redshirt or instant Wisconsin center? [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP] 2. The Backcourt: Wings and Guards starts at 32:24 Caleb Houstan is like bringing in an NBA three-and-D dude. Not going to feel like a freshman, can shoot over anyone 6'5” and lower so he could be the new Chaundee shoots it guy. Backups: all the fours and twos. Eli Brooks is the most important player on the team (no hot take). Kobe Bufkin is going to outplay his rankings—this year he's something in between freshman and sophomore Caris. Could see a jump from Zeb Jackson, or he could fall behind Isaiah Barnes. Not Jace's turn yet. Could be Frankie's turn soon but Devante Jones is your starting PG and could be an upgrade on Smith. 3. Big Ten Basketball Preview starts at 1:06:53 Tier 1: Illinois gets back Kofi and Curbelo, Trent Frazier is a problem for Brooks, who else can play on this team? Purdue brings back everybody, can a sophomore breakout from Ivey and Edey and Newman and Gillis take them all the way? Ohio State replaced its backcourt, waiting to see if Seth Towns can take a big role. Maryland found a center and a PG to go with Ayala and Scott. Tier 2: Indiana is 2015 Michigan football. They'll put four out so TJD can work alone inside, and brought in four transfers/recruits to do it. MSU has a few dudes but can't figure out which and when to play. Iowa and Wisconsin suffered huge losses. Nebraska > Penn State and Northwestern. Are 200 teams better than Minnesota? 4. Hot Takes, and Around the Big Ten, wsg Jamie Mac starts at 1:46:57 Signs of life from future opponents who looked like pushovers, signs of death from objects in the rearview mirror. Indiana has to be a frustrating follow, but not enough that we can wish Jamie luck on fixing that OL. Sort of a Washington game but with dinky doo passing. The TE leak stuff was something they saw on film and kept working. McCarthy's arc read worked when they thought it was Cade, but they need a pop pass or something off of it because it's too obvious late. Had to use multiple guards—Stueber wrecked. Appreciation for the running backs—greatest hurdle of all time? McNamara deep accuracy, where'd you go? [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP] 2. Defense vs Nebraska starts at 23:45 Nebraska is very good at college crappe, not very good at fundamental football. DTs have a very good day again, impressive that Mazi Smith could keep going after the opening screen. Jenkins had the 3rd down stuff. Hinton was great. They're not pass rushers however, which is still a step-up problem. Michigan had crappe as well, especially when Morris and Hawkins played that 4th and 2. 3. Hot Takes, Special Teams, and Game Theory starts at 47:15 Not a lot of weird decisions—both teams punted on 4th and 1 in their own territory. Special teams battle wasn't as big as we expected because of Michigan's punt returns: one flub, one ran backwards, one let bounce and lucky it went in the endzone. The rest was great: Robbins added distance to his Boom. MAAR blood in Moody. 4. Around the Big Ten, wsg Jamie Mac starts at 1:14:03 Iowa-Penn State changed when PSU didn't have a backup quarterback, which is very hard to do in 2021 when your Will Levis can just go start at Kentucky. PSU's defense is legit: Luketa is doing the Micah Parsons stuff, and their secondary is filled with stars. MSU-Rutgers you can watch the highlights because that's all there was. Wisconsin's best RB was booted from the program. Ohio State is shoveling coal again. Offense vs Wisconsin starts at 1:00 Long discussion about Cade: were the bad passes on him or the receivers? Little bit of both but we disagree on the degrees. McCarthy can run options however, which seems like an important thing. No more split zone in short situations: you're asking for impossible blocks. Tight ends got Wisconsinized. Hello Roman Wilson (don't step out). [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP] 2. Defense vs Wisconsin starts at 22:45 How Wisconsin was this? Quarterbackly: no. Wolf had two turnovers when he came in—similar to when Michigan lost Peters and fell apart here years ago. The front seven however! The DTs withstood some Wisconsin linemen. Ojabo had a GAME. Dax Hill had a game. Hinton and Smith and the young DTs with them looked pretty good. The interesting blitzes are an effect of running more zone. 3. Hot Takes, Special Teams, and Game Theory starts at 39:42 Seth reads off every 4th down decision and Brian says whether he would go or not go on that one. Really there was just one we thought they got too conservative. The pooch was a bad idea—20 yards in that circumstance is worth way more than 2 seconds. Special teams was a huge difference, e.g. punt from the 17, get it back on the 40. Moody hits all three. 4. Around the Big Ten, wsg Jamie Mac starts at 56:22 Western Kentucky could have hung with MSU if they didn't just kick field goals. Indiana broke Penix as well as everything else. Ohio State did to Rutgers all the things we were clamoring to do to Rutgers. Nebraska did terrible things to Northwestern, with a walk-on running back.  MUSIC: “Marigold”—Jelani Aryeh “Wet Leg”—Chaise Lounge “Future Me Hates Me”—The Beths “Across 110th Street”

Offense vs Rutgers starts at 1:00 Signs in the first drive, great play-action and RPOs on the second drive, then they ran out of ideas and kept running into stacked boxes like they'd never scouted this team and what they do. RBs are going to come in for some minuses. Vastardis got roasted by the slanting nose. DID NOT TEST THE EDGES VS THOSE INSANE SAFETIES UNTIL 5 MINUTES LEFT WHAT ARE WE DOING HERE? [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP] 2. Defense vs Rutgers starts at 21:05 Also not great. Rutgers ran a lot of college stuff, Michigan ran out a lot of DTs, Hutchinson was rampant, refs were unkind to us here and both teams on deep passes. 3. Hot Takes, Special Teams, and Game Theory starts at 35:25 The Sklars join us for the Hot Takes segment. Brad Robbins is not Jesus (in case you were wondering). Moody missed a field goal, RU missed too. Lots in the Game Theory segment, starting with Rutgers going for it at the end of the half on 4th and 10. And then Michigan not running a play with 5 seconds left. And lots more. 4. Around the Big Ten, wsg Jamie Mac starts at 56:22 How long can we spend on Minnesota-Bowling Green? Long enough to name every Carr assistant and player, and not long enough to get to the implications for teams who may have been losing to Minnesota in the 4th quarter this year.
