TEACHING SERIES: Changing The Conversation SERMON TITLE: Changing The Conversation About The Church BY: Tim Chilvers DATE: Sunday 14 January 2024 BIBLE PASSAGES: Romans– Chapter 12, verses 4-13 EXCERPT: Recently, a local man turned up to one of our Sunday morning gatherings because he had been told ‘Go to Riverside, they'll help you.' What does it mean to be a church that changes the conversation? Perhaps it means being so transformed ourselves, that we relentlessly work to transform the lives of others. That's the kind of community that changes everything – were people's needs are generously met, as they are pointed to the generosity of God. ‘The Church has an unconditional obligation to the victims of any ordering of society, even if they do not belong to the Christian community.' (Dietrich Bonhoeffer) “What I miss about church is being forced to be in community with people that aren't the same as me.' (Win Butler, Arcade Fire) Welcome: What's true of Riverside Church when we meet together in-person is still true of us online. We are on a journey together to help people get to know Jesus and grow as his followers across Birmingham and beyond. Riverside is a church made up of people from a diversity of backgrounds and experiences all with one thing in common; our discovery of God and His amazing love. We hope you will feel at home among us and that you will find our weekly services, events and groups welcoming and relevant to your life. Whoever you are, whatever you believe, you're so welcome in this community.

For Shane's selection of a 2022 album, he selects indie rock staples Arcade Fire and their new album "We". This was a unique endeavor for both Shane and Trevor, as Arcade Fire is a band that Trevor had been listening to since their beginnings, but had lost track of prior to their last couple of albums. Shane, though he was familiar with many Arcade Fire songs, had never really listened to an album from start to finish. This album was written in the throes of isolation brought on by the Covid 19 pandemic. Arcade fire weaves interstellar imagery with Greek mythos and takes the listener through the rabbit hole that is the disintegrating human connection found and lost again in technology and social media. Like so many of Arcade Fire's albums before it, this record is a concept album. This release is divided into two halves. The first, "I", represents the self, and the second, "We" represents our relationship with others. "We" takes the listener into an imagined dystopia of anxiety, violently destroys it, and builds a new world again, only to find clarity in human connection. Finally, this episode was recorded just ahead of allegations of sexual misconduct from four unnamed individuals against lead singer Win Butler. For this reason and others that we explain to begin the episode, you will not hear these allegations discussed throughout the albums dissection. Shane and Trevor have had several thoughtful conversations about this topic and encourage you to do so as well. ________________________________________________________________________________________________ HOW TO CONNECT WITH ALBUM DIVERS: *You can submit your questions or comments about this episode or anything else on your mind here via our text line at: (502) 792-8080 *Leave us an audio message here: https://www.speakpipe.com/AlbumDivers We promise to respond and may even feature your thoughts on a future episode. *Follow us on Facebook and Instagram at Album Divers *Email us at Albumdiverspodcast@gmail.com *Please subscribe and review wherever you get your podcasts!

Following the recent trend of early aughts bands returning with new music, Muse are attempting to make a comeback with their ninth studio album, Will Of The People. Myf's back from Bali and she and Zan have a lot to bang on about. Pool times, hanging with the PM, all of it. It's been a big week for Britney too, with the release of her new Elton John collab, and a 22 minute audio recording detailing her conservatorship. The verdict has been handed down on Chris Dawson, and 40 years on justice has been served. And Dolly Parton saves the day with her new line of pet products. Meanwhile our foray into Naturism new totem tennis heights, and we're banging on about two great reads. We debrief on the MTV VMA's too (WTF), and the biggest mic drop of the night; Taylor Swift's announcement of her new album. And wonder, with some help from TikTok, what it may sound like. When life gets tough, Win Butler's survival instincts kick in and he turns to music. That's what happened during one of his first bouts of depression as a teenager, and then again when the pandemic began and he needed to find some hope and a bit of safety. It's when working through those feelings and experiences that he writes some of his best songs. Win and Tom talk about a few things, like: is there a deeper, more spiritual side to falling in love with music? How do you write a hopeful song during a pandemic? And what's it like becoming a huge, indie music-defining band in your early 20s? Listen to find out.
