Locked On Zags - Daily Podcast On Gonzaga Bulldogs Basketball
Mark Few and the Gonzaga Bulldogs first went to the national championship in 2017, led by a pair of point guards in Nigel Williams-Goss and Josh Perkins and a quartet of quality big men in Przemek Karnowski, Johnathan Williams, Zach Collins, and Killian Tillie. Seven years later, the current Zags roster looks eerily similar: with two point guards in Nolan Hickman and Ryan Nembhard and four bigs in Graham Ike, Anton Watson, Zach Collins, and Killian Tillie. With similar offensive and defensive efficiency at KenPom, and a nearly identical tempo, could this team repeat history and go to the Final 4? We then discuss each Zag in the NBA after their first 20 or games of the season, including Chet Holmgren's Rookie of the Year campaign, Jalen Suggs' career performance, and Domantas Sabonis quest for another All-Star game. Finally, we close out the show discussing Drew Timme, who dropped 30 points for the Wisconsin Herd and drew the attention of Mark Few, who spoke about him after the Arkansas Pine Bluff game. We also discuss Marco Gonzales, former Gonzaga pitcher who was traded by the Seattle Mariners to the Atlanta Braves and then flipped to the Pittsburgh Pirates. Future Gonzaga Bulldog Dusty Stromer was not selected to the McDonald's All-American game, and he responded by dropping 22 points against Bronny James' Sierra Canyon squad over the weekend. Was Stromer a McDonald's snub, and is he the newcomer most ready to contribute to Mark Few's team in 2023-24? We discuss that and the potential playing time next year for Jun Seok Yeo. Then, we close out the show discussing 12 former Zags who are playing professional basketball overseas, including Filip Petrusev, Nigel Williams-Goss, Martynas Arlauskas, and Japanese teammates Johnathan Williams and Jeremy Jones. 40-year-old Ira Brown is still playing in Osaka, and former Zags Geno Crandall and Mathis Monninghoff are teammates in Germany as well. The American Legislative Exchange Council, or ALEC, is holding its annual meeting in Salt Lake City next week. Lawmakers, mostly Republicans, from around the country will converge on Utah. There, they'll meet with representatives from the private sector to discuss public policy proposals that may be implemented in statehouses around the country. Those proposals take the form of “model legislation” that serves as a template legislators can use to craft their own legislation.Critics of ALEC say the group promotes “pro business” bills that are simply “copy and paste” proposals. A recent investigation found at least 10,000 bills copied from ALEC's model legislation were introduced nationwide over an eight-year period, with more than 2,100 being signed into law. Today we present an unedited, on-the-record conversation with The Salt Lake Tribune's Editorial Board and representatives of ALEC. George Pyle and Tim Fitzpatrick from The Tribune engage in conversation with Utah Senate President Stuart Adams, R-Layton, who is the national chairman of ALEC this year, Lisa Nelson, ALEC's CEO, Bill Meierling, ALEC's Chief Marketing Officer and Johnathan Williams, ALEC's Chief Economist.
