She met members of her biological family between the ages of 17-21 and is honored to understand pieces of her story that were once missing. She has been married to her husband Eric for 24 years - the person who taught her she was worthy of unconditional love. They have one daughter through birth who is in college and another daughter through international adoption who is in high school. She is the author of Hospicing Modernity: Facing humanity's wrongs and the implications for social activism (2021) and one of the co-founders of the Gesturing Towards Decolonial Futures (GTDF) Arts/Research Collective. Most of her published articles and OpEds are available at academia.edu. She began her career as a teacher in Brazil in 1994 and has since led educational and research programs in countries including the UK, Finland, Aotearoa/New Zealand, Brazil, and Canada. Andreotti works across sectors in international and comparative education, particularly focusing on global justice and citizenship, Indigenous and community engagement, sustainability, and social and ecological responsibility. Her research examines relationships between historical, systemic, and on-going forms of violence, and the inherent unsustainability of modernity. Andreotti is one of the founding members of Gesturing Decolonial Futures Collective (decolonialfutures.net) and Teia das 5 Curas, an international network of Indigenous communities mostly in Canada and Latin America. She currently collaborates with these groups to direct research projects and learning initiatives related to global healing and wellbeing in times of unprecedented challenges.

Helping families feel involved in their children's education goes beyond checking the boxes to make sure you're following legal guidelines.That's why I invited Dr. Kristin Vogel-Campbell to De Facto Leaders to talk about how school teams can make the IEP process more welcoming to families, especially those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. Dr. Kristin Vogel-Campbell (she/her/hers) is a veteran Special Educator with over 20 years in the field. She has served in various roles from paraeducator to Director of Student Services and Special Education. She was a classroom teacher for a decade in the San Francisco Bay Area, working with students from Kindergarten through 8th grade. She is a systems-focused educator, working at the district level with school teams to ensure that students with disabilities are provided high-quality, research-based instruction and that all students are treated with dignity and respect in the Least Restrictive Environment. In addition, she has supported new site leaders in deepening their understanding of Special Education, including laws and protections for students and families. Kristin is a practitioner-researcher, working with families to share their experiences and perspectives. All-or-nothing thinking is so incredibly limiting and it prevents so many of my clients from living their most authentic lives. It's the concept that if you can't do it perfectly the first time, you might as well not do it at all. And that's not true! That's your fear talking and it's holding you back. Olivia Muñoz is a Chicana writer, artist and educator living in the Pacific Northwest. Olivia believes passionately in the power of creativity and lifelong learning. She has traveled the world, led trainings on diversity, equity, and inclusion, and mentored young Latinas in higher education. As a former reporter for The Associated Press, Olivia published pieces on food, culture, and breaking news in various news outlets throughout the country. She has a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing and earned a doctorate in International and Multicultural Education from the University of San Francisco. Olivia was born and raised in Saginaw, Michigan, to Mexican parents, and her heartfelt poetry and essays explore the Midwest Latina experience. She was recently accepted to the competitive Tin House Winter Workshop in Portland, Oregon for 2024, where she will develop a short story collection. Yes, she is the oldest daughter of immigrants. Janet Guadalupe Martinez Aguilar, also known as Flaka G, has had an incredible life that has been a remarkable tapestry of triumphs and challenges, woven together with threads of determination, love, and faith. Born in the vibrant heart of Mexico City, she and her family embarked on a journey and she arrived in the United States at the age of 5 years old. Since then, she worked hard to be a beacon of hope for her family, community, and anyone who crosses her path. She has been married for 7 years, she has a 4-year-old who is autistic and an angel baby. She worked as an HR professional for a decade, a non-profit co-founder, a progressive church catechist, and an active mentor in her sorority as our Central Alumnae regional director. Now, she is focusing on changing the world one person at a time as a Career Coach. Dr. Leena Bakshi McLean is the founder of STEM4Real, a nonprofit professional learning organization committed to combining STEM and standards-based content learning and leadership with principles of justice-centered pedagogy. She currently serves as the Director of Multicultural Education and Equity for the National Science Teaching Association. Leena has worked with pre-service teachers at UC Berkeley and Claremont Graduate University teaching STEM methods and Universal Design for Learning. She is a former county and state level administrator and mathematics, science and anatomy teacher. She is also the author of the children's book, “There's Something in the Water”, a story that highlights the real life of Dr. Tyrone B. Hayes, an endocrinologist from UC Berkeley. As a woman of color and a mom of two girls, access and opportunity in STEM are personal for her. Dr. Potes currently teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in teacher preparation, including Secondary Mathematics Methods and Multicultural Education. Previously, she worked as a Mathematics Lecturer at the University of Hawaiʻi West Oʻahu for five years and as a secondary mathematics teacher for thirteen years in the Department of Education. She focuses on contextualizing mathematics education by incorporating mathematics, culture, and sustainability. Her research is rooted in Hawaiʻi and influenced the development of a framework that includes place-conscious pedagogy, culturally responsive pedagogy, and critical ethnomathematics pedagogy. Dr. Tabia Lee is a longtime educator, pedagogist, and a founding member of Free Black Thought. In 2021, Tabia was hired at DeAnza College in California as the Faculty Director for the Office of Equity, Social Justice, and Multicultural Education. Tabia attempted to reform the toxic campus atmosphere characterized by many faculty and staff members as “too woke.” DEI colleagues at DeAnza rejected Tabia's efforts to promote a “pro-human” approach to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives. Tabia, a black woman, was called a white supremacist, a racist, and a right-wing operative, among other accusations. In June this year, Tabia was fired. That had never happened in my entire teaching career. And not only that, I'd never seen teachers calling each other names like that.”In 2021, Tabia Lee was hired to direct De Anza College's Office of Equity, Social Justice, and Multicultural Education and to reduce the wokeness of the institution.“I just went beyond the smaller bubble to the larger community, and said, ‘Who wants to work on actual inclusion and doing some things we've never done here before?'” says Ms. Lee.But after two years, Ms. Lee was terminated for her heterodox perspectives and inquiry-based approach to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).“I've lost everything, basically. And that's tough,” she says. “But what I've gained is so many people coming and saying, ‘Thank you for having the courage. Thank you for raising the issue.' They've said, ‘You inspired me to ask about my equity policy. You inspired me to go into my child's school and ask to see that curriculum, and to make a public records act request if needed, if people aren't being forthcoming with the information I'm seeking. You inspired me to push back when I wasn't going to, and I hadn't in the past.' And to me, that's worth everything, because that's what it's going to take to take our nation back.”We discuss Ms. Lee's heterodox approach to DEI, inquiry-based learning, the difference between classical and critical social justice, and what it means to genuinely practice inclusion.“We're making that small impact with our students, right? But the broader system is just being destroyed and dismantled right before our eyes. And we're complicit in that because we're not saying anything,” says Ms. Lee.
