Born into an entertainment family in Queens, New York Jonathan Hock was destined for a career in sports and film. For over 10 years, Hock cut his teeth under the tutelage of the legend Steve Sabol at NFL Films, leading him back to Brooklyn where he started his own production company, Hock Films. After producing the beloved And1 Mixtape Tour for 7 seasons, Hock made his first award winning documentary, Through The Fire, profiling Staten Island basketball phenom, Sebastian Telfair. Hock has gone on to direct the most 30 for 30's and has arguably the finest sports documentary CV of all time. Hock takes us behind the curtain and explains some memorable moments from his highly acclaimed documentary of Miracles and Men and he explains to us why it was so important for him to frame the Felipe Lopez story through the lens of immigration in the wonderful 30 for 30 called the Dominican Dream. It was truly enjoyable conversing with someone with so much expertise. I think you will enjoy it too on this episode of Beyond the Lens presented by Diesel Films.

Chris Herren's story was publicized in 2011 through an ESPN 30 for 30 documentary titled Unguarded. It was the story of his rise and sudden fall of his professional basketball career due to substance abuse. The film also shows how Chris turned his life around. Over the years, Chris has been telling his new story. The First Day is the evolution of that talk where he weaves in his experiences but truly makes it about the students he's speaking to and about their struggles. His superpower is the ability to connect with these students -- and everyone should watch this film. In this episode: -Chris and I discuss why he made The First Day film and the impact he believes it can make -Jonathan Hock, the producer of The First Day, and I discuss the backstory of this documentary and the initial film he produced about Chris titled Unguarded -Watch the trailer for The First Day --- This episode is brought to you by HANDL New York (www.handlnewyork.com) --- Text START to 345345 to join my newsletter for the latest updates --- Send questions or comments to omaid@omaid.me
Our 10th anniversary podcast series continues with the director responsible for more 30 for 30 films than anyone else, Jonathan Hock. His six films have covered the iconic Jim Valvano and his 1983 NC State basketball team's run to the championship, the infamous Soviet hockey team, and the fleeting promise of great young athletes. In this episode, Hock talks to Jody Avirgan about why few things are as irretrievable as an athlete's past triumphs. These films and the entire 30 for 30 collection are available exclusively on our streaming service ESPN+ (es.pn/2shPit7), and all our bonus conversations about 30 for 30 films are available in our podcast archives (http://bit.ly/30Chat).
On The Gist, oh, Ben Carson. In the interview, Felipe Lopez was once billed the Dominican Michael Jordan. His star power even in high school led the team to play in bigger New York City venues—the better to fit the legions of fans who cheered as he carried Harlem’s Rice High School to a championship victory. But his court domination dwindled in college, and in the NBA. Lopez joins The Gist to talk about the joys brought to him by basketball, not least of which is one that college athletes and recruiters rarely think much of: a degree. ESPN’s The Dominican Dream, a documentary on Lopez by Jonathan Hock, is streaming now on ESPN Plus. In the Spiel, M&M’s, cannibalism, and the Game of Thrones finale. Learn more about your ad choices. A lot of energy, a lot of fun and a lot of talk about family on this week's BEHIND THE LENS with special guests writer/director/producer Deon Taylor and writer/director/producer Gayle Kirschenbaum. First up, hear the passion of Deon Taylor as he talks about his latest film, MEET THE BLACKS. At the farthest end of the spectrum from his last film, the critically acclaimed and well received "Supremacy", MEET THE BLACKS is one raucous riotous laugh after another. Listen as Deon not only talks about the "making of" MEET THE BLACKS and his considerations for story and comedy casting, but the cinematic considerations of lighting and lensing, plus his concerns shooting this film digitally as opposed to his prior works, with "Supremacy" even being shot in 16mm. Deon gives some terrific tips for filmmakers. And hot on Deon's heels is Gayle Kirschenbaum who joins me talking about her very powerful, cathartic, resonant and fun documentary, LOOK AT US NOW, MOTHER! It's a coffee klatch chat fest with Gayle as she talks about story structure, balancing of emotion and the pure fun of taking this cinematic journey revisiting life with her mother who, by the way, is buckets of fun in the documentary. Plus, hear excerpts of what Cliff Curtis had to say during our exclusive interview talking his tour de force performance as Genesis Potini in THE DARK HORSE. And of course, since it's opening day of the 2016 baseball season, what better way to throw out the first pitch than to hear from documentarian Jonathan Hock talk about his latest film, the Kevin Costner narrated, FASTBALL! So. . .Play Ball! http://behindthelensonline.net http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com
