In this episode, I speak with renowned filmmaker, Bernardo Ruiz, about his ESPN 30 for 30 film, The Infinite Race. Bernardo's accolades are many: he is a two-time Emmy® Award-nominated documentary filmmaker and a member of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences. He has directed and produced five feature documentaries and a host of nonfiction programming for a variety of outlets including PBS, HBO, ESPN and Facebook Watch. I recently had the opportunity to pre-screen Bernardo's film, The Infinite Race, ahead of its December 15th premier, and I know you are really going to enjoy this film. To give you a little background, the Infinite Race is about the Rarámuri, otherwise known as the Tarahumara, an indigenous community in Mexico. You might be familiar with this community from the popular book Born to Run. But what Born to Run doesn't address is the threat of organized crime that many members of the community face. Bernardo's film captures events surrounding the 2015 Ultra Marathon Caballo Blanco, a crossroads for Tarahumara and international runners. There are many uneven power dynamics caught up in that ultramarathon and, often, in conversations on the Tarahumara community among international audiences. Bernardo talks about all of this and more, so enjoy our conversation. ESPN will debut competitive eating 30 for 30 this summer with ‘The Good, The Bad, The Hungry’ his past weekend, ESPN Films debuted a documentary directed by Nicole Lucas Haimes at the Tribeca Film Festival. Awful Announcing has since learned that The Good, The Bad, The Hungry will be released as a 30 for 30 installment and will air on July 2nd. That air date serves a nice promotional boost for the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating contest, which airs live on ESPN on July 4th. At this time, there is no trailer for the film, but the description of the film via Tribeca’s website is below. “America’s independence isn’t the only reason to celebrate on the 4th of July. For residents and visitors on Coney Island, the date is synonymous with the nationally televised Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest, a.k.a. the “Super Bowl of competitive eating.” The annual frankfurter consumption extravaganza even has its own “Magic versus Bird”: Japan’s Takeru “Kobi” Kobayashi and Californian Joey Chestnut. Their rivalry is deeper than cooked franks and water-drenched buns. Kobi and Joey’s competition is the stuff of vintage sporting drama, hot dogs and all, tackling personal challenges and questions about what it means to be an “American hero.” In this documentary, filmmaker Nicole Lucas Haimes analyzes competitive eating’s most storied pair through lively and candid interviews with both competitors. She approaches an event that—let’s be frank—isn’t taken seriously by most people with earnestness and wide-eyed fascination, constructing both an insightful primer on a niche sport and an endearing humanization of two unconventional athletes.” The film is currently listed at 77 minutes, which means it would fit into a 90 minute window with commercials when it airs on ESPN. There have been a few installments that have premiered at Tribeca or other film festivals before airing on ESPN, including Catching Hell, which debuted at Tribeca in 2011.

His much-anticipated ESPN 30 for 30 film "Nature Boy" on the amazing life and times of the legendary professional wrestler Ric Flair debuted earlier this week.  During this week's episode of The Chauncey DeVega Show, Rory and Chauncey discuss their mutual love of professional wrestling, how they fell in love with the sport, getting to know Ric Flair, the personal tragedies and the public persona, and why and how Flair has remained so relevant in global popular culture some forty years after he first debuted. Rory also gives some advice for aspiring filmmakers and those others who want to pursue their creative dreams.  Mama DeVega also makes her return to the virtual bar and salon this week. Mama DeVega is very angry at people who suggest that somehow she is being manipulated and does not have opinions of her own. In rare form, Mama DeVega also tells the truth about Donald Trump, relays stories about being a civil rights pioneer, and gets upset about "the phantom pooper".  In this week's episode, Chauncey DeVega shares a story about the human trash monsters who still support Donald Trump and also urges folks to not get too excited about the Democratic Party's wins at the polls on Tuesday. Chauncey also has a case of the blues and realizes that his sad mood is caused by the one-year anniversary of Donald Trump's conquering of the presidency and the climactic ascent of American fascism.

Zane is also very close to the subject material because he too jerks off twice a day and has 10 beers a day for years at a time. This documentary is very much a sanitized version of some of the dark aspects of Flair’s career and personal life. In this podcast Jake tries to go a bit deeper and dig into the psychology of the Nature Boy and why he chooses to do the things that he does. At  times during this podcast Jake's opinion doesn’t paint Ric in the best light but it is an honest and personally portrayal of man who really did sacrifice everything for professional wrestling. A man who lived life as if everyday was his last and searched for love and attention from the whole world.
