Gary Mabbutt is a real legend of that historic club – Tottenham Hotspur of North London – but Gary was quite lucky to get that far as he nearly died as a boy while at his youth club. He did not die of course, but was diagnosed with what was then a pretty unknown condition - that of type 1 diabetes – he was told by the doctor that his football career was over and he would have to take a lot of precautions and master his diet moving forward just to insure his life would not be cut short. He was 17 and his world was shattered, but given his nature he didn't give up and with his father, he did what any stubborn teenage boy would do - he went looking for another doctor. It took 4 tries, but he found one that walked him through the care he had to take, explained to him the nature of blood sugar and insulin, and all the ins/outs of living with this condition – his pregame meal, his post game meal, his sleep and of course, what to do in case of emergency. He would go on to play nearly 500 times for Tottenham, over the course of 16 seasons – 11 as captain. He played with or against the likes of: Enzo Scifo, Dennis Bergkamp, Paul Gascoigne, Jurgen Klinsmann and Johan Cruyff. As an aside, the other three doctors that recommended retirement all spoke to Gary over the years – congratulated him on his success, marveled at what he was able to accomplish with his disease - and further that his career would provide a blueprint for all the diabetics that would came after him, something that Gary is very proud of. He is a true legend of White Hart Lane, an inspiration for those that share his ailment and a gentleman above all. Gary Mabbutt - EP 23 Thanks for listening! We appreciate your support. Following the Icons magazine, lovingly detailing 60 of the game's greatest names, we decided to delve a little deeper into some of them in this podcast series. Kicking things off, Gary Thacker tells Rob Fletcher why Johan Cruyff deserves his legendary status.
Andy Dolich, a renowned sports executive, shares insights from a groundbreaking career in today's episode. From creating the first sports management program at Ohio University to boosting attendance for the Washington Diplomats with soccer legends like Johan Cruyff, Dolich recounts the milestones of his journey. “Sports is part of our society,” Dolich says. “60, 70, 80 thousand people can come together, have their differences, root for their countries, and when the game is over ... get along. We can use more of that today.” His time with the Oakland A's saw attendance rise from 300 to 16,000 season ticket holders, culminating in the 1989 World Series win against the Giants despite the challenges of the Loma Prieta earthquake. “It is sports that really helps bring people together,” he notes. Reflecting on teamwork, leadership, and trust, Dolich also discusses his unsuccessful 1999 bid to buy the A's. Join us as Dolich explores the unifying power of sports and its vital role in society. ⭕️ Watch in-depth videos based on Truth & Tradition at Epoch TV

Why don't great players automatically make great managers? Why did Bobby Charlton fail so disastrously at Preston when Kenny Dalglish succeeded so triumphantly at Liverpool as Johan Cruyff did at Barcelona? Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger had no careers at all as players but turned out to be great managers, Steven Gerard and Frank Lampard were great players but not great managers. Is there a pattern to this? The panel try to find the link between success on the pitch and in the dugout. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

With his unrivalled ability to capture elite athletes in action, he's produced illustrations of the likes of Pele, Bobby Moore, Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Johan Cruyff, Franz Beckenbauer, Sir Ian Botham, Sachin Tendulkar, Andy Murray, Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan, Sugar Ray Robinson and Oscar De La Hoya to name just an illustrious few. It's his first and most-enduring football idol Dixie Dean who we're concerned with today though. Paul, who celebrates his 90th birthday on March 11, was transfixed by Dixie ever since he was taken to his first ever game on February 22, 1937, shortly before he turned three, to watch a then Second Division Tottenham Hotspur defeat Everton 4-3 in an FA Cup fifth round replay. Over two decades later, he'd be reunited with the Blues' most-prolific marksman as he met up with his boyhood hero to produce the legendary centre-forward's life story for the Liverpool Echo. This incredible series ran in our newspaper for a marathon 21 weeks during the 1960/61 season. Still razor sharp and a larger-than-life character and raconteur, Trevillion talks us through his incredible memories of an Everton legend. #EFC #EvertonFC #EvertonFootballClub Everton FC podcasts from the Liverpool ECHO's Royal Blue YouTube channel. Jesper Olsen, an exotic signing from Ajax in 1984 for the Reds, joins Helen Evans, Wes Brown and Lou Macari for a trip down Memory Lane on the UTD Podcast. The Dane was at Old Trafford with kids from his Future Football coaching school and, as he is based in Australia now, this was a rare opportunity to speak to the former winger at a ground he graced, parading his skills down the left flank.Jesper reveals how he always followed United's results growing up in Denmark and worked in a bank before breaking through at Ajax. He feels there was a reason why Ron Atkinson decided to sign him and talks us through the move and adapting to life in English football. This included a lot of effort off the pitch, including lock-ins at Paddy Crerand's pub (!) and needing to ask captain Bryan Robson about the ‘small bears' that were appearing in his garden! It was not always plain sailing, as he lifts the lid on an infamous training-ground bust-up with midfield hard-man Remi Moses, one that was hard to hide as it left him with a black eye.The transition to training at The Cliff was an eye-opener and he got to see the start of Sir Alex Ferguson's reign when the Scot came in. Jesper would go on to play with Eric Cantona at Bordeaux and talks about the best players he lined up with, including Johan Cruyff and that memorable penalty routine he performed with the Dutch master. Now living Down Under, Jesper retains the memories of United being “something special” and reminisces about the brilliant FA Cup in 1985 against Everton. At the end of the podcast, Jesper, Wes and Lou provide invaluable advice to the kids from the coaching school about how to make the grade in the game. This is a fabulous chat with one of our first overseas signings and the chance to catch up with a skilful player who will be remembered fondly by a lot of supporters. The best place to catch up on the back-catalogue of our interviews is over on the Manchester United App, where you can listen to - and watch - all of our episodes in full, for free.
