Welcome to “Not Couple Goals” where co-hosts Allie Nelson and Tyler McCarthy do a deep dive into a different ridiculous romantic thriller from the vantage point of their long-term relationship. Allie, a TV writer/producer and actress, has an affinity for romantic thrillers, the more salacious the better. Tyler, an entertainment reporter and critic, often finds himself drawn in despite his better judgment. Join them as they explore all the ways it's possible to love too hard… like WAY too hard. In this episode, Allie and Tyler are surprised by the originality of the 2020 thriller “Fatale,” starring Hilary Swank, Michael Ealy and Mike Colter (aka Marvel's “Luke Cage”), written by David Loughery and directed by Deon Taylor. Listen as they discuss the film's nods to “Fatal Attraction,” the layered performance from Hilary Swank (obviously) and if it really counts as cheating if it's with Mike Colter. Black Film Festival Atlanta Founder Raecine Tyes joins the Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio podcast to invite you to attend this year's event. She also reminisces on the event's impressive first year while sharing details about what to expect when the festival returns Feb. 1-6, 2022. Tyes joins show host Carol Morgan for the Around Atlanta segment. An author of two motivational books and a children's novel with experience in event coordinating and production, Tyes has always loved film and anything creative. When she came up with the idea for Black Film Festival Atlanta, Tyes's mission was to highlight the work of talented filmmakers who may not have the opportunity to showcase their products. Tyes said, “Our goal is also to educate the new filmmaker with industry-related resources and to try to provide an excellent opportunity for networking.” Whenever industry experts are willing to take the time to share industry-related tips or advice for independent filmmakers, it is incredibly beneficial for both participants and attendees. Tyes shared that she was always involved in something creative, whether she was filming an event for a client or promoting independent films in Georgia. One day, she decided to set up a platform for filmmakers. Initially, she expected a few participants to submit entries to showcase on a local college campus. Unexpectedly, the inaugural festival received 300 submissions which led to a six-day event showcasing 70 independent filmmakers. “I wasn't sure what to expect my first time around, but we really got some top-notch films,” said Tyes. “We got submissions from Emmy winners… [and well-known actors]. I was just kind of blown away.” The festival quickly grew into an event beyond Tyes's imagination. Now known as the Hollywood of the South, Georgia is a magnet for up-and-coming filmmakers as well as existing and well-known talent in the industry. In addition to creating a platform for local filmmakers, the inaugural festival featured nine celebrity judges, including singer Al B. Shore! and filmmaker Deon Taylor. Recognized by the mayor's office in its first year, the festival received attendees from across the country as well as a few international guests! Featuring a wide range of genres, attendees can expect to see horror, romance, action and more showcased in this year's submissions. This year, the festival will be conducted virtually. Tickets can be purchased via Eventbrite and each day will offer separate screen selections. The festival hosts an Actor's Boot Camp and a Writer's Winetasting. The Brunch with a Filmmaker event allows industry professionals and filmmakers to discuss projects and offer valuable information for attendees. Tune in to the full interview above for more information on the Black Film Festival Atlanta or visit www.BlackFilmFestivalAtlanta.com to learn more. “We're at a crossroads right now, where I truly believe this is the reckoning.” With the Omicron variant spreading globally and Covid-related hospitalizations on the rise again, Van pulls back the curtain on a vaccination debate raging within the Black community. Arguments for and against the COVID-19 vaccine tend to play out differently among African-Americans. To help explore the dueling perspectives, Van is joined by two guests--Deon Taylor (filmmaker and producer) and Jonathan Isaac (NBA power forward for the Orlando Magic)—who hold differing opinions on vaccination and mandates. Deon was hesitant about the vaccine -- but today publicly champions the shot that may have saved his life. Jonathan remains personally hesitant about the vaccine and opposes mandates -- seeing medical decisions as highly personal ones. Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie directors! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. On this strangest of holiday seasons, Conor and I had a lovely conversation with filmmaker Deon Taylor, whose new thriller Fatale is now in theaters and available on demand. We chat about the genre flicks that Hollywood won't make anymore and Taylor's determination to keep making them. He talks about his hope for people to seek out Fatale in theaters where safe, his journey to directing stars like Hilary Swank and Michael Ealy, and the 90s thrillers he's used as inspiration for his own pictures. We also dive into some lesser-known, Christmas-set noirs from the 1940s: Christmas Holiday (written by Mank himself!) and Lady in the Lake, Robert Montgomery's adaptation of the Raymond Chandler mystery. There's some additional recommendations for holiday-ish movies, some you may know, some you may not. Finally, two recommendations of cool things our friends did. There's a collection of writing for Criterion, which features past-and-future guest Moeko Fujii's great piece on Toshiro Mifune. And there's buddy and Who Shot Ya? co-host Alonso Duralde's book Have Yourself a Movie Little Christmas, a perfect gift for the holidays and a perfect tool to prep for next year!
