What happens when price wars are killing everyone's margins? Pete sits down with two industry heavyweights who've seen it all—and lived to tell about it. Michael Magnuson from GoodBed brings the data that'll make you rethink everything about how customers actually shop for mattresses (spoiler: it's not just about price). Mark Quinn from Shifman Mattress has been in the trenches for decades—retail, manufacturing, you name it—and he's got war stories about stores that broke free from the race to the bottom. This isn't some fluffy "add more value" conversation. These guys get into the real tactics that separate profitable retailers from the ones barely hanging on. Quinn's seen what works (and what doesn't) across every part of the business, while Magnuson's got the consumer research that explains why some stores can charge premium prices while others can't give mattresses away. If you're tired of competing on price alone, this episode gives you the roadmap to escape before it's too late.
We're told a housing boom is on the way in the capital with a new district plan allowing for more higher-density homes closer to the city. Has this made it easier to develop in Wellington, and what will it mean for house prices? Also, for the first time the Wellington City Council has responded to public concern over a cycleway project, voting to investigate reinstating carparks to Glenmore St near the Botanic Gardens. It's the fifth u-turn in a year, after the Reading Cinema deal, airport shares sale, Begonia House and Khandallah Pool. Is this the council responding to residents' concerns, or does it demonstrate they don't properly consult before making decisions? To answer those questions, as well as discussing the Golden Mile, Wellington Water and citizens arrests, Kaffe Eis owner Karl Tiefenbacher and property developer Mark Quinn joined Nick Mills for the Business Panel. The discussion centered on Mark Quinn's book, "Be Smart, Pay Zero Taxes," which outlines strategies for legally minimizing tax liabilities. Quinn introduced the "buy, borrow, die" approach, which allows individuals to leverage margin loans against their investment portfolios to access funds without triggering capital gains taxes. He emphasized that this strategy is accessible to a wide audience, including those in blue-collar professions, and highlighted the potential use of cryptocurrencies and ETFs. Quinn shared his personal experience of purchasing a home with minimal down payment, illustrating how debt can be utilized to acquire significant assets while deferring tax consequences. Further, Quinn and Kerry Lutz examined various investment strategies, including the advantages of margin accounts and the potential of covered call ETFs. Quinn discussed the tax-free transfer of assets to heirs through a step-up in basis, allowing for wealth growth without immediate tax implications. They also touched on automated trading and the performance of specific investment vehicles, with Quinn claiming his methods could significantly outperform the stock market. The conversation concluded with plans for future collaboration and the sharing of additional resources to help individuals implement these financial strategies. Well, today I got to sit down with the amazing Rebecca Adam, CEO of Expression Australia. And let me tell you, this episode was a first for me - I had my very first Auslan-interpreted conversation, and I was like a kid in a candy shop! Rebecca's story blew me away. She's profoundly deaf, but that hasn't stopped her from smashing through glass ceilings. She's the first deaf CEO of her organization in 140 years and she's also a lawyer to the Supreme Court of Victoria using Auslan. We talked about everything from her experiences growing up in a deaf household, to leading a national organisation, to the ways technology is helping (and sometimes falling short) when it comes to deaf inclusion. I even learned that one in six Aussies is actually affected by hearing loss. Rebecca's got such a calm, yet powerful presence, and she's been breaking barriers in education, sports, law - you name it.. I adore her! Her resilience and the way she's used adversity as fuel to become a leader and an advocate for the deaf community is such a legendary achievement. Plus, huge thanks to Mark Quinn, the Auslan interpreter. This conversation was one of my favourites! What consumers want. The famous movie from the 90's What Women Want provides inside insights into the mind of women...and it's the same super power retailers wish to possess. In this throwback episode from 2021, Mark Kinsley and Mark Quinn interview, Jesse Kostuhoski, Vice President of Retail Development for the Furniture and Appliance Mark in Stephens Point, Wisconsin. He is a 25+ year industry veteran, spending more than 15 years in retail stores and almost a decade with Serta. Based on his unique perspective, it's clear he has a pulse on the consumer and what their core needs are. If you think engagement, trust and advocacy aren't the first things on a customer's mind, you may need to think again. They also chat about hiring and the current issues with finding good help. Lack of help is a pervasive problem that is currently affecting every industry, and they discuss how hiring an employee goes beyond their skill set, but must also include a discussion on goals and dreams–both for the employee and you as their employer. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mattresspodcast/message

Deep discounts or finance offers with interest? Which appeals more to consumers? Inflation is at the highest rate it has been in more than 40 years and consumers are feeling more than a pinch in their pockets. Surprising to some, including Quinn, when it comes to shoppers, consumers are more likely to purchase based on the financing options available more than the deep discounts one advertises. In this episode, Mark Kinsley and Mark Quinn analyze the impact of inflation and how more and more shoppers are turning to credit options as their savings accounts dwindle and their budgets get tighter, and how a credit option actually connects you with a consumer more than a basic purchase with cash. Plus, they provide powerful conversation pitches to help make the sale relatable to the consumer and their life. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mattresspodcast/message
Have you heard of sleepscursions? If not, they're exactly what they sound like: an excursion dedicated to sleep. Does it sound made up? Well, it isn't and boutique hotels are taking notice. In this episode, Mark Kinsley and Mark Quinn discuss research related to boutique hotels: why people choose them over national chains, how important location is to their destination, and the most important, the mattress and pillow quality and what people expect from a niche hotel in terms of sleep comfort. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mattresspodcast/message
