In the spring of 1975, the Red Sox came racing out of the gate led by a trio of outfielders who were making a mark in the American League… Dwight Evans first came on the scene in 1972 and was now the everyday right fielder. Joining him in '75 in left was future Hall of Famer Jim Rice who would have a spectacular rookie season finishing 3rd in the league in the MVP race and 2nd in Rookie of the Year. That's because the guy manning center in Fenway had an even better first season in the bigs. Fred Lynn would go on to become the first player ever to win MVP and Rookie of the Year in the same season, a feat only matched one other time when Ichiro Suzuki did it in 2001. And for Lynn and the Sox fans, it was love at first sight. The 23-year old kid won the CF job out of Spring Training and never looked back… He would finish the season with a .331 average, 21 home runs and 105 RBI's while also winning a Gold Glove for his defensive prowess in centerfield. It was a season for the ages for Lynn and the Sox that culminated in one of the All-time classic World Series matchups between the Sox and the Big Red Machine that went 7 games after one of the most famous October HR's ever... a shot by Carlton Fisk that won arguably the greatest World Series game ever played…  That Game 6 contest was a moment in sports where the people of Boston for years would ask… ‘Where were you for Game 6?” The answer for a young Dan Shaughnessy was… Fenway Park… Years before the Hall of Fame writer was hired by the Boston Globe to cover the team he grew up loving, Dan was there with his sister taking in one of the greatest games he ever witnessed… and he's seen a lot… from that Game 6, to Bucky Dent's blast in '78, to the euphoria of Dave Henderson's HR that helped propel the '86 Sox back to the World Series to the Buckner play that same October that kept the curse alive to Boone's HR in '03 and the comeback that ended 86 years of futility in 2004… Shaughnessy has literally covered it all. The author of a dozen books including One Strike Away, The Curse of the Bambino, and Reversing the Curse: Inside the 2004 Boston Red Sox, nobody knows the Sox of the last 50 years better than this kid from Groton, MA who's had a birds eye view of it all and access to the players and team like no other. Shaughnessy tells us on the Past Our Prime podcast how his friend and mentor Peter Gammons told them all to watch out for this kid from USC who was going to be the next big thing in Boston and how Freddie Lynn started hot, and never stopped in that magical Rookie season of '75. It would be almost 30 more years before the Red Sox broke the curse and Shaughnessy relives the highs, the lows, the ups and the downs of that Sox ride beginning 50 years ago, when a young phenom from L.A. took New England by storm and had a season we're still talking about on the Past Our Prime podcast. Erik Childress and Steve Prokopy have no anxiety reviewing eight movies this week. Especially when one is a replay of a movie they raved about at Sundance and won the Audience Award at their Chicago Critics Film Festival this year (Ghostlight). But Steve also talks about Jude Law and Alicia Vikander in a story about Henry VIII (Firebrand) as well as Stephen Fry and Lena Dunham as a father and daughter revisiting Poland (Treasure). Erik checks out David Duchovny adapting his own novel (Reverse the Curse) and an animated version of a decades-old Japanese superhero (Ultraman Rising). They look at Julia Louis-Dreyfus in a fantastical story about confronting death (Tuesday) while Andrew McCarthy confronts the reality of the group labeled the “Brat Pack” (Brats). 1978 World Series Game 5 and 6 Sunday October 15th @ Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York, New York Tuesday October 17th @ Dodger Stadium in Chavez Ravine, Los Angeles, California After being down two games to none to start this series, the Yankees have evened things up in the Fall Classic, and they look to keep things rolling here in game five. No team has yet to overcome a 2 - 0 deficit by winning four straight, but if any team could be the first, it would be Bob Lemon's Yankees. They've certainly had their share of good fortune here at Yankee Stadium, and they have capitalized on nearly every Dodger's mistake. Misplays, errors, and just rotten luck have been the story of Tommy Lasorda's squad the past few days. Whether it was Graig Nettles incredible reflexes, Bucky Dent's unrelenting hustle, or Reggie Jackson's ‘subtle' hip movement, there was always something in the way for Los Angeles, not to mention a costly errors in the field and on the bases from the usually reliable Bill Russell. If they don't clean up their act soon, they will lose their second straight World Series. Since the Yankees evened this series at two games apiece, we are guaranteed at least one game back in Los Angeles. Who will have the advantage heading in to game six will come down to the pitching matchup in game five. For the Yankees it will be rookie righty Jim Beattie(6 - 9 3.73 ERA 128 IP). The former Dartmouth basketball star was shaky, but effective against the Royals in the ALCS, but he hasn't pitched in nearly two weeks. The Dodgers will send Burt Hooton (19 - 10 2.71 ERA 236 IP) to the mound, and although he's been their best regular season pitcher the past few seasons, his postseason starts have been hit or miss. He can be brilliant, but if that knuckle-curve isn't dancing, ‘Happy' Hooton can make his hot-tempered manager furious. In game six, it will be a match-up of future Hall-of-Famers and 200 game winners, Don Sutton (15 - 11 3.55 ERA 238 IP) and Catfish Hunter (12 - 6 3.58 ERA 118 IP). Ultimately this series will come down to who can come up with the big hit. Will it be the stars, like Reggie Jackson or Steve Garvey? Or maybe it will be someone unheralded, like a pair of scrappy middle-infielders? Audio clips from joeydbball on Youtube. NBC broadcast with Joe Garagiola, Tony Kubek, Tom Seaver, and Curt Gowdy Game 5 Game 6 - some CBS radio with Bill White As always, shout out to Baseball Reference and SABR for statistics, boxscores, background information, and much, much more.

Russell Earl "Bucky" Dent is a retired Major League Baseball player and manager widely remembered by fans for his tenure with the New York Yankees … and his famous tie-breaking home run versus the Boston Red Sox at the end of the 1978 season. The St. Louis Cardinals originally selected Dent in the 1st round of the 1970 amateur draft but he did not sign with the team, allowing the Chicago White Sox to take him the 1st round (6th overall) of the June Secondary later that year. The right-handed shortstop spent four seasons (1973-1976) in Chicago, finishing second in 1974 Rookie of the Year balloting (behind Mike Hargrove). Bucky also appeared on the first of what would be three All-Star Game rosters (1975, 1980, 1981) while with the team. However, Dent had trouble successfully succeeded Luis Aparicio at short, compiling a .239 batting average and 209 RBI, and eventually was traded to the Yankees (1977-1982), where he became part of Bronx Bomber history. Dent hit a three-run homer that gave the Yankees a 3-2 lead in the 1978 AL East division play-off game versus the BoSox … an unlikely event as Dent had hit only 40 home runs in a dozen seasons in the big leagues. Dent batted .417 in that year's World Series, earning MVP honors as New York topped the Los Angeles Dodgers. At the end of his professional career, Bucky spent time with the Texas Rangers (1982-1983) and the Kansas City Royals (1984) before retiring with a .246 batting average and 423 RBI. He compiled a 36-52 record managing the Yankees at the end of the 1989 and beginning of the 1990 seasons.

1978 World Series Game 3 Friday October 13th, 1978 @ Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York, New York As the series heads east, the Dodgers are in strong position, up two games to none. Game one was a blowout, thanks to a power outburst from LAD 2B Davey Lopes, but game two was nail biter. Ron Cey drove in all four runs, including a go-ahead three run homer off of Catfish Hunter in the 6th inning. The Yankees had the tying and go-ahead runners on base in the ninth for Thurman Munson and Reggie Jackson, and Tommy Lasorda turned to rookie fireballer Bob Welch to hold the line. With incredible determination and guile, the kid came through, forcing Munson to fly out and striking out Jackson after an epic nine pitch battle. The crowd was electric, and while they would love another opportunity to cheer on their squad, the LA faithful are hoping the Boys in Blue take care of business in New York. In previous World Series, only five teams had ever overcome a 2 - 0 deficit, the most recent being the 1971 Pirates. And in each of those series where a team did come back, they had to do it in seven games. The task is hard, but it is nigh impossible if you go down 3 - 0 in the series. No team has ever overcome a 3 - 0 deficit in a World Series, so the Yankees are desperate to win this one. Good thing that they have the best pitcher in the world going for them, Ron Guidry (25 -3 1.74 ERA 273 IP). The young lefty has been sensational the entire year, but it has been quite the workload he's compiled. For a pitcher who relies on plus stuff matched with plus command, fatigue could hamper his effectiveness. If the Gator isn't missing bats like usual, he'll need his defense to be sharp, particularly the left side with Bucky Dent and Graig Nettles. On the other side, the Dodgers will turn to Don Sutton (15 - 11 3.55 ERA 238 IP). The future Hall-of-Famer picked up his 200th career win during the regular season, however 1978 was probably his weakest year in nearly a decade. Sutton, who entering the playoffs had never lost a postseason start, got shelled against the Phillies in the NLCS. He'll need to be much sharper if the Dodgers hope to take an insurmountable lead in this series. Don't "Curt Schilling" Your Podcast

I don't care who you are, what your podcast is about, and how many listeners you do or don't have. Do not do what Curt Schilling did in his podcast last month. So, quick background for those of you who aren't baseball or Red Sox fans, the Red Sox went 86 years without winning a World Series. They had a number of heartbreaks over the years, including Bucky Dent's home run in 1978, the ball going through Bill Buckner's legs in 1986, and then most recently, the Aaron Boone home run in game seven of the 2003 American League Championship Series off Tim Wakefield. So to set the stage, Tim Wakefield was terrified at the end of 2003 that he'd be the next Bill Buckner. Flash forward to 2004. The Red Sox bring in star pitcher Curt Schilling. He embraces the whole break the curse thing. He even does a Dunkin Donuts commercial where he says, "I'm here to break an 86 year old curse." And then in the playoffs has a tendon in his ankle, surgically sewed on so that he's able to pitch in heroic fashion. And you would think at that point, as the Red Sox go on in the World Series, that Curt Schilling is never going to pay for dinner in Boston ever again.Well, as the years go on, first Curt Schilling becomes a political troll. Now, whatever your political beliefs are, don't be a troll. Although being a right wing troll in Massachusetts is probably not a good idea. He then decides to invest in a video game company and somehow gets Rhode Island taxpayers to front millions of dollars before he bankrupts it and costs the taxpayers a whole bunch of money, and he's just generally a bad person.Contrast that with Tim Wakefield, who spent years and years and years doing charity work and working with the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and the Boston Red Sox Charitable Foundation and just did amazing things and was beloved. Well, flash forward to September 2023. Curt Schilling has a baseball podcast. He reveals on the podcast that Tim Wakefield has terminal brain cancer. And, oh, by the way, his wife also has pancreatic cancer. Not a very high survival rate. Now, nobody that wasn't close to the Wakefield family knew any of this. Curt Schilling decided that he had the right to go on his podcast and tell the world this very personal nugget about a terminal cancer diagnosis for Tim Wakefield. Naturally, Curt had a ton of blowback on this, and sadly, within about a week of this story coming out, Tim Wakefield passed away at 57 years old. Now, what does all this mean to you? You may be privy to information in a podcast that's not public. You may know things. People may tell you things in confidence. It is your responsibility to maintain that confidence. It is not your right to tell somebody else's story that they don't want shared publicly. And this goes for, of course, social media, texting telephone, you name it. But it's true in podcasts especially. They say the Internet lives forever. Well, podcasting is part of that. Anything you put in a podcast can be picked up by anyone, anywhere, and amplified. Do not talk about something in your podcast that is not your place to talk about. You may think it's just an aside or a brief comment, but there are ramifications. How does all this turn out? Well, Tim Wakefield is recognized as a hero on and off the diamond all over Boston, and tributes have been pouring in for the last week.Curt Schilling, after thinking he'd never pay for a meal in Boston ever again, and the World Series win, would probably come out from dinner in the North End and have his tires slashed for the terrible person he's become. Don't be Curt Schilling. And be careful what you say on your podcast. And a tip of the cap. Rest in peace, Tim Wakefield.

SEASON 2 EPISODE 47: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:43) SPECIAL COMMENT: Yeah, I get it: I want my MTV (Motion To Vacate). Gaetz is running for governor. It's a STUNT. It doesn't matter WHICH Russian Republican runs their spitshow. What MATTERS is: Jack Smith is goddamned serious about the Gag Order. And new polling shows that the NATION is serious about disqualifying Trump under the 14th Amendment: 51 percent in favor, only 34 percent opposed. Judge Chutkan will convene a hearing on October 16 – two weeks from yesterday – on the Jack Smith gag order request and Smith is even more damned serious about it than I dreamed. HIS late night answer to TRUMP'S late night answer pointed out that the newest threats he made – the post about the death penalty for treason for what Trump considered treason – weren't directed at Milley but directed at OTHER potential witnesses who might want to avoid those kinds of THREATS let aloner anything else. More over, the Special Counsel's office noted that it doesn't REALLY matter whether Trump did or DIDN'T buy a Lugar at a white supremacist gun shop in South Carolina. A purchase would obviously be a violation of his bail and there'd be no way for Chutkan not to revoke it and not to put him behind bars until the trial starts. But the OTHER option was ALSO an abuse of the terms under which Chutkan did not end Trump's freedom in the first place.“The defendant either purchased a gun in violation of the law and his conditions, or seeks to benefit from his supporters' mistaken belief that he did so.” Even LYING about buying a gun is a way in which Trump has exploited the absence of a gag order to remind his cult – AND WITNESSES – that he is a man dedicated to violence and the fomenting OF violence. Also Trump inadvertently CONFESSED to January 6th, and at his fraud trial he reminded us that his only genuine emotions are about money, and losing it makes him angry and stupid. So anybody debating him needs to make him ANGRY ABOUT MONEY. Also Trump said he'd rather be electrocuted than eaten by sharks and to that I say: you've got a deal! B-Block (18:40) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Did you know Governor Sarah Huckabee of Arkansas is being buried by a scandal over a $19,000 Podium? George Santos has a Constitutional argument against the new California senator. Unfortunately it appears he made it up. And speaking of making it up, Fox's Rachel Compost-Doofy is shocked Gov. Newsom didn't appoint the woman SHE KNEW would be the next Senator (22:03) IN SPORTS: The passing of Tim Wakefield and the guilt of Curt Schilling. Baseball managers Buck Showalter and Phil Nevin were fired even if the teams won't say so. The baseball playoffs have next to no meaning for me, maybe because 45 years ago yesterday I attended - a reported - the greatest playoff game imaginable. K.O. reports from the Bucky F'ing Dent Game. C-Block (32:00) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: One of the managers offed as the baseball season ended was Buck Showalter, who 30 years ago provided one of my favorite sports anecdotes and later made fun of himself for it.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

When Luis Urías hit a grand slam on Saturday at Yankee Stadium, it was the first time that a Red Sox number nine hitter collected a salami in the Bronx, and only the second time ever for the man at the bottom of the Boston order to go deep against the Yanks with the bases loaded. Luis Rivera had done it at Fenway Park on August 31, 1990, and that was it.Overall, the Yankees still have a 4-2 lead in ninth-hitter grand slams against their rivals, three by pitchers: Red Ruffing in 1933, Don Larsen in 1956 (months before his World Series perfect game, what a year), and Mel Stottlemyre (inside the park) in 1965, all at Yankee Stadium. Fred Stanley took Mike Torrez out of Fenway on June 20, 1978 – sort of the opposite of Larsen, as Torrez would go on to give up Bucky Dent's division-deciding blast over the Green Monster. The Yankees last had their No. 9 batter hit a grand slam in 2021, Gary Sánchez off Baltimore's Keegan Akin. The Red Sox's last No. 9 slam before Urías was… also Urías. Last Thursday. Two days earlier. So, in a span of three days, Urías went from having hit 46 home runs as a major leaguer without a grand slam to 48 homers with two grand slams, both out of the No. 9 hole. Only three players have done that more in an entire career: Rich Reese (for the Twins in 1969, 1970, and 1972), Dick Schofield (for the 1985 and 1986 Angels, and 1994 Blue Jays), and Yuniesky Betancourt (for the 2007 Mariners, then two for the 2010 Royals).Betancourt's pair in 2010 came on July 17 and August 21, but there are 29 players now, including Urías, with two career grand slams out of the No. 9 hole, and 34 days was not the record for temporal proximity there. The record for games between grand slams by a number nine hitter is 0, set by Tony Cloninger when the Atlanta pitcher gave himself all the run support he would need on a first-inning slam off Bob Priddy, grounded out against Priddy in the third, then hit another granny off Ray Sadecki in the fourth. Cloninger gave up a solo shot to Sadecki in the fifth, but got himself a ninth RBI in the eighth, driving in more than half the runs on his way to a 17-3 complete game win. There have been a few other No. 9 hitters with two slams in a season. Brandon Inge had a week for the 2004 Tigers, hitting a grand slam off Cleveland's Jason Anderson on April 23 and Anaheim's Scot Shields on the 27th, the closest anyone got to Cloninger until Urías.In 1996, Kevin Elster hit grand slams out of the nine-hole for the Rangers on April 19 and August 5. Like Don Larsen, Madison Bumgarner had a more memorable moment in the 2014 World Series, but also hit grand slams on April 14 and July 13, both in San Francisco. The following year, Hank Conger hit grand slams for the Astros as the number nine hitter on August 1 and September 4.The players who did it in back-to-back seasons, in addition to Reese and Schofield?* Dizzy Trout (1949 and 1950 Tigers)* Tom Brookens (1987 and 1988 Tigers)* Milt Cuyler (1991 and 1992 Tigers)* Jose Valentin (1994 and 1995 Brewers)* Sean Berry (1995 Expos and 1996 Astros)* Mike Matheny (1996 and 1997 Brewers)* Darren Bragg (1996 and 1997 Red Sox)* Hunter Renfroe (2018 and 2019 Padres)* Raimel Tapia (2018 and 2019 Rockies)* Martín Maldonado (2021 and 2022 Astros)And the ones for whom the second grand slam was a repeat of more years gone by?* Rick Wise (1971 Phillies and 1973 Cardinals)* Casey Blake (2006 and 2008 Cleveland)* Jake Rogers (2021 and 2023 Tigers)* Omar Vizquel (1993 Mariners and 1996 Cleveland)* Byron Buxton (2016 and 2019 Twins)* Julio Lugo (2003 Devil Rays and 2007 Red Sox)* Camilo Pascual (1960 Senators and 1965 Twins)* Denny Neagle (1995 Pirates and 2001 Rockies)* Bob Gibson (1965 and 1973 Cardinals)* Kelly Johnson (2008 Atlanta and 2016 Mets)* Champ Summers (1975 Cubs and 1984 Padres)* Glenallen Hill (1989 Blue Jays and 1998 Cubs)And the record for the longest time between grand slams as a number nine hitter? Jim Sundberg, at Fenway Park for the Rangers off Rick Wise (who should've known to be careful with No. 9 hitters, shouldn't he?) on June 9, 1975, and then 12 years later as a Cubs pinch-hitter, blasting a game-tying slam off Lance McCullers (Sr.) of the Padres, followed by four more Chicago runs for a wild 12-8 triumph.
