We sadly lost 1990s icon James Van Der Beek in February, so we decided it was time to look at his most prominent non-Dawson's Creek role - the teen comedy-drama sports movie Varsity Blues. Released very early in the year on January 15th, Varsity Blues was the 45th highest grossing movie of the year. Opening as a surprise number, it made back most of its 16 million dollar budget in its debut weekend and would go on to gross an impressive 54 million dollars worldwide, but it really became a summertime hit in its home video release in June. Also starring Jon Voight, Paul Walker, Ron Lester, Scott Caan, Amy Smart, Ali Larter, and a little baby Jesse Plemons, and featuring an incredibly 1999 soundtrack including Foo Fighters, Green Day, Collective Soul, Third Eye Blind and Fastball, Varsity Blues has something of a cult status, in part due to one very memorable line delivery. But how does it hold up as a teen movie or a sports film? This week, our friend Jacki Krestel joins us to talk sports, teens, 90s tropes, and James Van Der Beek. Jack writes about baseball on her blog, Jack Likes Baseball.
This week on Gig Gab, Dave Hamilton sits down with guest co-host Rand Lempert of the Broken Rings, a two-piece recording project built on 15 years of musical kinship between Rand and guitarist Gio da Silva. You’ll hear how these two have crafted an intentional, travel-fueled recording process across cities, cutting live instruments and vocals together, passing files between New Orleans, Tampa, and now Denver, and why that friction and urgency is exactly the point. Rand makes a compelling case for keeping things analog as long as possible: real amps, minimal pedals, old-school mic placements like a modified Glyn Johns setup, and the conviction that nothing replaces the feeling of having a human being in the room when the tape (or hard drive) is rolling. The conversation ranges wide, from Rand’s vivid 9/11 tour story, stranded in St. John’s Newfoundland on one of the last planes to land before U.S. airspace shut down, to a deep dive into the art of the perfect pop song, with nominations for Tempted by Squeeze, Big Star’s Thirteen, Bryan Adams’ Cuts Like a Knife, and Fastball’s Out of My Head. Whether you’re a working drummer obsessing over beat placement, a songwriter who only writes when the muse actually shows up, or a road veteran who knows that idle days on tour are far worse than grueling ones, this episode has your number. The Rizzuto Show accidentally turns into a full-blown 90s alternative rock therapy session this episode — and honestly, we're not qualified for that kind of emotional labor. Jimmy Griffin joins the crew ahead of Hard Promises taking over The Pageant, and things immediately derail into a passionate debate over which songs got CRANKED in your Geo Metro and which songs made you consider driving directly into the nearest retaining wall. Totally normal behavior for a daily comedy show. The gang breaks down the magic of The Pageant in St. Louis, why certain venues just hit different, and how every local musician basically treats that stage like sacred ground. Jimmy, Moon, and the crew talk touring memories, legendary staff, and why The Pageant remains one of the best venues in the country. Meanwhile, Rafe contributes important scientific analysis like “this song belongs in the organic peanut butter aisle at Schnucks.”Then comes the glorious avalanche of 90s nostalgia. Bush. Silverchair. Local H. Soul Asylum. Fastball. Collective Soul. Gin Blossoms. Primitive Radio Gods. The Wallflowers. Deep Blue Something. Dishwalla. Basically every song that ever played while your parents fought in the front seat of a Dodge Neon. The crew debates which songs were instant “turn-it-up” classics and which ones deserved immediate radio execution. Lern reveals her absolute hatred for “Runaway Train,” Moon passionately defends Silverchair with the energy of a man protecting sacred scripture, and Jimmy Griffin admits he thought Silverchair was just “baby Nirvana.” Somewhere during all this, Rizz realizes half these bands were apparently “for the girls,” which honestly explains a lot.Jimmy also talks about performing Tom Petty songs with Hard Promises, including why Petty's catalog is basically impossible to screw up because the songs are deceptively simple and annoyingly perfect. The crew gets into favorite deep cuts, beginner guitar memories, and the undeniable brilliance of “Last Dance with Mary Jane.” Jimmy then performs an acoustic version live in studio that immediately makes everyone forget they spent the previous hour roasting Primitive Radio Gods. But the true MVP moment of this entire episode? Jimmy's AutoZone story. A random guy confidently tells him he looks like “Earl Smith” — apparently the legendary frontman of Aerosmith now has the name of a retired high school baseball coach from Festus. Congratulations to the world on accidentally creating the greatest fake musician name in history. This episode has everything:90s alt-rock chaosTom Petty appreciationaggressive music opinionsweirdly emotional radio nostalgiaGeo Metro memoriesgrocery store soundtrack analysisand a new tribute band idea called EARL SMITHJust another completely reasonable daily comedy experience from The Rizzuto Show. Because if we're not yelling about Fastball in 2026, what are we even doing anymore? And yes… somebody definitely threatened to drive off a bridge because of Primitive Radio Gods.A completely stable and emotionally healthy daily comedy show.Follow The Rizzuto Show → https://linktr.ee/rizzshow for more from your favorite daily comedy show.Connect with The Rizzuto Show Comedy Podcast online → https://1057thepoint.com/RizzShowHear The Rizz Show daily on the radio at 105.7 The Point | Hubbard Radio in St. Louis, MO.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

The single-elite-pitch era is closing out. Hitters caught up. Flatter swings, simpler load patterns, machine prep against any movement profile, and the discipline to ride out their front side mean a 70-grade four-seamer alone doesn't survive third time through the order anymore. The new edge is repertoire.Trevor and Dan break down why pitching development has shifted toward stacking multiple fastballs at the same velocity. Zach Wheeler throws three. Paul Skenes throws three. Cam Schlittler, Peyton Tolle, Davis Martin, Christopher Sanchez — all riding multi-fastball mixes that defeat the single-pitch sit. The conversation moves through tunneling, weak contact and stolen strikes as the new market inefficiencies, why Stuff+ models miss repertoire interaction, and Corbin Burns as the canonical case study where a "below-average" sinker existed to make a 120-grade cutter play.Chapters00:00 — Open / Mother's Day intro01:53 — The multi-fastball trend: Soriano, Schlittler, Joe Ryan, Peyton Tolle02:22 — The Zach Wheeler model: why hitters caught up, and the Trajekt machine03:58 — Mizorowski as the velocity outlier04:58 — Christopher Sanchez: when even an elite pitch starts getting hunted07:22 — Corbin Burns: cutter as the engine, sinker as the steal12:46 — The two missed market inefficiencies: weak contact and stolen strikes16:48 — Peyton Tolley: adding a C-grade sinker to make a 70-grade four-seamer play21:54 — Davis Martin: 60% fastball, three variations, nothing graded above average, sub-2 ERA23:19 — Joey Volcheck and Georgia: the trend reaching college baseball24:40 — IPitch / Trajekt: how hitter prep changed the math32:17 — Multi-fastball relievers: Vodnik, Mejia, Perkins41:22 — The Stuff+ blind spot: how do you grade repertoire interaction?51:00 — Closing thoughts

On today's edition of the cast, we take a gander at the Billboard Modern Rock Charts and recap artists who reached the top of the chart on their very first chart entry. It's a feat that was actually more difficult to accomplish than it looks way back in the day, with some artists unable to reach the summit in their first chart appearance. We take a look at all the artists that reached the summit for the first time, including the founding fathers Nirvana, Green Day, and The Offspring to name a few. Plus some other lesser, one hit wonders including Smash Mouth, Chumbawamba, Marcy Playground, and Fastball. We also talk about how it's been more of a common occurrence more recently with sombr, The Paradox, and Edgehill reaching the top with their song 'Doubletake" which I play for you at the end of the cast.

I wish I had come up with “Smart Beer”. That's such a funny idea. But some business dick beat me to it. I wonder if I'm losing my fastball. Oh, no, I guess I'm not, because my copy of All The Pain That Money Can Buy is right here on my CD shelf! I'd like to see some Wharton stiff come up with that. But they could never. They probably don't even know that Fastball frontman Tony Scalzo came up with the idea for the song after reading articles that described the June 1997 disappearance of an elderly married couple, Lela and Raymond Howard from Salado, Texas,[6] who left home to attend the Pioneer Day festival at nearby Temple, Texas, despite Lela's Alzheimer's disease and Raymond recently recovering from brain surgery. Send in your music story!A silly Friday mood turns into the kind of conversation that's way more real than you expect. We start with Rebecca Black nostalgia and end up unpacking the weird ways school adults sometimes try to “teach lessons,” from setting kids up to laugh to calling an entire class a future failure statistic. If you've ever carried a random school moment for years, you'll understand why we went there, and why we laugh through it anyway. Then we shift into a tight music news rundown for anyone who wants the highlights fast: the loss of Motorhead guitarist Phil Campbell, Rod Stewart's farewell tour momentum, reunion buzz, release chatter, and the swirling Kanye West India concert rumors. We also do a quick Harry Styles reality check, comparing albums, talking hit power, and why some new songs can be good without taking over the culture the way As It Was did. Finally, we get fully consumed by Pocopia, the Pokémon builder game that has us playing on lunch breaks and thinking about it when we're not even holding the controller. We break down what makes it work: cozy Animal Crossing style charm, Minecraft style building freedom, story driven Pokémon characters, completionist systems, and even DJ Rotom letting you run around while classic Pokémon music plays behind you. We wrap by sharing what we've been listening to lately, from early 2000s hip hop and R&B chaos at work to pop punk discoveries and a renewed love for Fastball. In this week's podcast, I sit down again with Dr. Adam Maloof, Princeton professor of Geosciences and athletics fellow for the baseball team. This time he's tackling one of the most overlooked problems in baseball analytics: pitch classification. If you've ever looked at a scouting report and thought, “This guy doesn't throw seven pitches,” you're not alone. Dr. Maloof explains why existing pitch tagging data from popular systems (TrackMan, Synergy, and MLB's StatCast) are often inconsistent, inaccurate, and difficult to use for data analysis.Together, we discuss:Why MLB's pitch classifier is trained on what pitchers call their own pitches (and why that's a problem for hitters and analysts)How Dr. Maloof analyzed nearly 5 million college pitches using a “blank slate” approach inspired by geologyThe “color wheel” analogy: why pitches within a category (fastballs, breaking balls, changeups) exist on a continuous spectrum with no natural boundariesHow Princeton's staff uses reclassified data for scouting, pitch design, and pitching machine programmingPitch tunneling: what it is, how they measure it, and how they're teaching it to pitchersThe role of arm slot, biometrics, and what's next for this researchRead Dr. Maloof's article on pitch tagging: How to Classify a Pitchhttps://medium.com/sabr-tooth-tigers/how-to-classify-a-pitch-a4805ce35082Connect with Patrick Jones Baseball:On X: @pjonesbaseball

But, what is your take?i.Does Eddie Cabrera go up or down in your rankings or stay the same?ii.I'm assuming Caissie goes up, as he should get a chance to play. What's your take?2.The Cubs also make news, signing Alex Bregman to a long 5-year deal. This one has a lot of ramifications, as it was reported that the Red Sox really wanted to re-sign him.a.What happens to Matt Shaw? It's been widely reported, and I've heard from my contact that the Cubs are not happy with Shaw. I've heard he's difficult to work with, and the Cubs were not happy when he took a day off in September to attend the Charlie Kirk memorial. b.Who plays third for the Red Sox? Do they double down on signing Bo Bichette or go with some combination of Marcelo Mayer and Kristian Campbell3.The Rockies acquire Jake McCarthy on Saturday for RHP Josh Grosza.I know it's the Rockies, but does McCarthy get a jump in value? RosterResource lists him as the starting right fielder.b.It's a bit of a bummer for Dynasty League owners waiting for Zac Veen and Sterlin Thompason to get a shot. It could even gum up the works for Cole Carrigg. Your thoughts?c.I saw Josh Grosz pitch with the Yankees last season in High-A. Fastball sat 93 to 94 MPH and was pretty flat with average secondaries. He does get a new lease with the Diamondbacks, but he's not someone I'd be running out to grab in Dynasty Leagues.4.My draft has slowed to a crawl. I'll share some of my mid-round picks.Segment 2 – Shortstop Rankings for the 2026 Season1.How are you approaching this position for your upcoming drafts?2.We will break down the top 15 to 20 in detail. Then, go through 20 to 30 in less detail. We will end by jumping around the remaining ranked players.3.Which player not in the Top 10 has a chance to emerge there next season?4.Which Top 10 player will not be there next season?5.Give me a couple of sleepers6.Give me one, maybe two guys you are just going to avoid drafting?
Episode 129 of Tablesetters is a mini reaction episode focused on two developments that highlight how teams are navigating an offseason where certainty has become increasingly expensive. The episode opens in Chicago, where the Cubs land right-hander Edward Cabrera in a trade with the Marlins, sending outfielder Owen Caissie and infield prospects Cristian Hernandez and Edgardo De Leon to Miami. While the deal resembles a familiar exchange of pitching for position-player depth, it reflects a deliberate pivot toward upside as the Cubs address rotation needs amid a thinning pitching market. Cabrera had been on Chicago's radar since last summer's trade deadline. When rotation concerns resurfaced in October and elite starters quickly came off the board this winter, the Cubs turned to a pitcher whose ceiling is difficult to find outside the top tier of the market. The Cubs acquire Cabrera after the most complete season of his career. In 2025, he posted a 3.53 ERA across 26 starts with 150 strikeouts in 137⅔ innings. From early May through early August, he recorded a 2.22 ERA, pitching like a frontline starter over a sustained stretch. That performance was driven by a dominant changeup, elite swing-and-miss breaking balls, and meaningful improvement in his control. The risk remains part of the profile. Fastball inconsistency and durability questions persist, and the Cubs are not acquiring a finished product. They are betting that the gains are real and that their development infrastructure can push the profile further. The episode then shifts to Philadelphia, where the Phillies have scheduled a meeting with Bo Bichette. The discussion centers on why the fit exists now, how Bichette's flexibility reshapes the infield picture, and what a potential move would mean for the Phillies' payroll and roster construction. Episode 129 examines two different paths to the same question. When certainty is expensive, how far are teams willing to lean into upside? TableSetters is where roster decisions, front office thinking, and the business of winning meet.

Moving from a pro baseball diamond to a Hollywood set is a rare occurrence. The examples start in the early 1900s, when vaudeville and silent films were a natural spot for sports heroes. The pattern continues all the way to modern Hollywood studios and the current media scene. We're going to examine the stories of nine professional baseball players who leveraged their athletic careers to start new ones as on-stage or on-screen actors. Some were fueling a second passion, some did it for survival after playing days were done, and some used their skills on the field to build legacies that still exist in Hollywood today. It's been a fascinating topic to study. If you're interested in learning more about the baseball to Hollywood pipeline, I highly recommend you check out:- From Spring Training to Screen Test: Baseball Players Turned Actors which is an ebook produced by the Society for American Baseball Research and edited by Rob Edelman and friend of the show Bill Nowlin.- The Hall of Famer Filmography assembled by the National Baseball Hall of Fame- The book Bats, Balls, and Hollywood Stars: Hollywood's Love Affair with Baseball by Joe Siegman.- Make sure to check out the episode about John McGraw to learn more about his life and accomplishments.Get Deeper Into the EpisodeSubscribe to the FREE Substack newsletter for videos, photos, and other content related to this episode.Liked the Show? In this episode of The Snap Chat, Alex welcomes back long-time creator Bynx to discuss the current state of Marvel Snap, touching on Bynxs' new content series and the community's urgent desire for Series Drops to fix the bloated Series 4 and 5 economy. The duo dives deep into the "Weapon X" season reviews, analyzing Weapon H as a fun but skippable addition for Discard loyalists, while expressing skepticism about the new "Hybrid" Discard/Destroy cards, Marrow and Wild Child, which feel too niche despite strong stats. The excitement peaks with Maverick, a 4-star pick for Surfer decks, and especially the Fastball Special, which earns a rare 5-star rating from Binks for its incredible potential to revitalize Galactus and Nimrod strategies. The conversation wraps up with a mailbag segment on the Grand Arena event, where the hosts praise the concept of pre-made decks but critique the poor balance execution, ultimately suggesting a hybrid format to improve future limited-time modes. Nothing says Dungeons & Dragons like a heated debate over baseball stats and spell slots. Before diving into Unearthed Arcana updates, the RPGBOT crew takes a wild detour through the world of snacks, sports, and sore losers. Tyler shows off his prized Seattle Sounders memorabilia, Ash relives the heartbreak of a bad inning, and Randall celebrates the Cubs like they just crit a dragon. Then, in true RPGBOT fashion, the conversation magically transforms into an analysis of the Arcane Archer subclass—because when life throws curveballs, we cast Magic Missile. Help Creators Roll a Natural 20 Hey listeners! Before we start slinging arrows and conjuring elementals, remember: your ratings and reviews are the Inspiration Points of podcasting. Whether on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you listen, take a moment to rate, review, and share RPGBOT.Podcast. Every five-star review powers our continued quest for knowledge, chaos, and crunchy D&D rules analysis. And yes, Randall's giving away loot—because adventurers who leave reviews always find better treasure. Show Notes In this episode, the RPGBOT crew slides from sports talk to spellcraft in record time. After sharing their favorite baseball rivalries—including Red Sox vs. Yankees heartbreaks and the Cubs' long-awaited triumph—they pitch a new conversation: Dungeons & Dragons Unearthed Arcana updates for Arcane Archer, Tattooed Warrior, and Conjurer Wizard. The hosts analyze the Arcane Archer subclass redesign, exploring how ranged attacks now interact with spells and how the subclass feels more satisfying to play in D&D 5e. They then unpack the Tattooed Warrior—a mystical martial archetype that trades spellcasting for permanent magical ink, bringing new abilities like Beast Tattoos and Celestial Tattoos into play. Finally, they summon up the Conjurer Wizard subclass, praising the new Durable Summons and Splintered Summons mechanics that make conjuration magic both tactical and terrifying. The group discusses the ongoing struggle for martial class balance in D&D 5e, the Weapon Mastery updates coming in 2024, and the limitations of customization in tabletop RPGs compared to other systems. Despite the in-depth mechanics, the humor never fades—Tyler laments his dice luck, Ash declares summoning “a sport,” and Randall insists that snacks are the foundation of all creative builds. Key Takeaways The Arcane Archer Unearthed Arcana update finally gives martial ranged classes something to cheer about. Tattooed Warrior's redesign focuses on unique, flavorful combat options without relying on spells. Conjurer Wizard subclass updates—especially Durable Summons and Splintered Summons—enhance battlefield control and flexibility. Martial vs. spellcaster balance remains a point of debate, though Weapon Mastery in 2024 shows promise. Customization in D&D 5e is still more limited than in systems like Pathfinder 2e or Starfinder 2e. Listener reviews and engagement are vital to helping independent RPG podcasts thrive. The RPGBOT crew proves that humor, rivalry, and camaraderie make even a mechanics-heavy discussion worth the listen. “Get in the Game” Next time you're watching the big game, grab your dice bag. Draft your own fantasy team of Arcane Archers, Tattooed Warriors, and Conjurer Wizards—because the only thing better than a walk-off home run is landing a critical hit from 600 feet away. Hey Slaycaters, meet Lela and Raymond Howard, a sweet elderly couple from Salado, Texas who, against the wishes of concerned family members, decide to drive themselves to a nearby festival, 15 miles away. They never made it — in part because Lela was driving in the complete opposite direction. n fact, a cop pulled them over for driving with their headlights off in Arkansas, about 500 miles away. Meanwhile, back home panicked friends and family were desperately searching for the missing couple. Did they deliberately go on the run? Was Lela's Alzheimer's to blame? Were they trying to escape a life of doctors appointments, medications, aches & pains? This 1997 story became the inspiration for the song ‘The Way' by Fastball -- only with a much happier ending. Three plus pitches of a fastball with a huge whiff rate, signature pitch in his slider (43.6% whiff rate) and a good enough change-up. Above average control.2. Ranger Suarez – Will continue to be underrated because he's not an elite strikeout guy, but ground ball machine 3.04 xERA on a 3.20 ERA3.Eury Perez – Had a rough spot that drove his ERA up, but xERA is 3.24 with nearly a 10 K/9 strikeout rate. Fastball is back to averaging 98 MPH and his change-up is still ridiculous (60% whiff rate).4.Jac Cag – I'm hoping a .158 batting average surpresses his value. Had a 89 MPH exit velo, which is not elite (more average), but huge bat speed metric and I believe he's going to hit the ball hard. xBA is .249, reasonable strikeout rate of 22% (just below league average).5.Dylan Crews – Call me crazy, but speed is at 90th percentile, average exit velo is at 89.7 mph, bat speed ranks in upper third of the league, xBA is .248 on his .210 BA. Strikeout rate is a bit high (23%) and walk rate a bit low (7.5%), but nothing too alarming. Failed sleeper1.Coby Mayo – I got intrigued a few weeks ago, and now he's continued to hit and now has become a bit of Darling going into next season. That said, the data doesn't not support a breakout. He's not hitting the ball hard and striking out too much. Oh, he's been great over the last month, but the exit velos are worse with a .228 xBA. All his power is derived from pull and loft. This might be a sucker a pick, so I'm backing off.Close
