Many cameras now feature IBIS: in-body image stabilization. But do you really need a stabilized body? Can you use just a stabilized lens? And for that matter, is image stabilization just a crutch for lazy photographers? Also in this episode, we ponder perfect photo destinations. For this episode of the B&H Photography Podcast, we took our portable recorders to an elegant mansion along Central Park, which had been decked out by Sony as a series of stylized photography sets, complete with full lighting, backdrops, and models. They also happened to have on hand many brand-new Sony Alpha a7R IV Mirrorless Digital Cameras and hundreds of lenses for the guests to shoot with in these mini studios. Let’s not forget about the great music, delicious food, and open bar Sony provided. All in all, it was a wonderful event to celebrate the highest megapixel full-frame camera on the market. Sony invited many impressive photographers, writers, influencers, retailers, and… us. And we made our way through the many rooms, speaking with Sony representatives and photographers, getting their first impressions of this latest incarnation of the Alpha a7R series. Needless to say, people were impressed and, after seeing the specs and handling this new camera, so were we. Our first guest is Michael Bubolo, Senior National Manager from Sony PRO Support. We sat with Bubolo before the crowds arrived and were able to go over some of the upgrades and features and get his thoughts on what makes this camera stand out from previous models. Next, we welcome the one and only Ken Rockwell to ask his thoughts on the camera and anything else he wanted to talk about. After a short break, we speak with visual artist Lori Grinker about her potential uses for the a7R IV and then, with landscape and travel photographer Jude Allen, who happened to be in town from San Francisco, about his first impressions after handling the camera. Finally, we sit down with Sony Artisans Andy Katz and Colby Brown, who both had had the opportunity to shoot the new camera for a couple of weeks and report back on the features they most appreciate for the specific work they do. Join us for this in-depth look at the latest Sony full-frame mirrorless camera, and let us know if you are ready to upgrade.

FujiFilm has announced the discontinuation of Acros 100. Written on a previous post, we believe that FujiFilm got out of the film game before the resurgence. Because of the filmgrain.es article and connections to FujiFilm in addition to Doc Kaps meeting with FujiFilm execs to save FP-100C, we believe this to be enough evidence to think the machinery is long gone. Street Candy Film We recap Bill's 'One-on-One' interview with Vincent Moschetti. You can listen to the podcast episode here. Kodak T-MAX P3200: My First Roll Steven’s report on shooting P3200. He shares his experience shooting the film and shows us pretty pictures! Kodak Announces Ektachrome E100 in 16mm Let's get it out of the way. There's another pushback on the timeline. It is now slated for late summer/early fall 2018. It's okay though. The gap is getting smaller and smaller it's important that Kodak has a successful launch for Ektachrome. When the article was posted, 35mm was not mentioned and people started to get concerned. We tweeted Matt Stoffel at Kodak and has confirmed that 35mm is on the same timelines as Super 8 and 16mm. https://twitter.com/StoffelMatt/status/982369815443771394 We believe the announcement of 16mm format is the result of a survey Kodak put out about the super 8 camera in early February. Tim Gander After the podcast episode, Tim Gander submitted an article sharing his experience switching to a digital camera and beating his competition to print who were still shooting on film. Read up on the article here and listen to his 'One-on-One' interview with Bill here. Adorama On April 4, 2018, Adorama Learning Center writer, Mason Resnick, posted an article called, “5 reasons why I am never going back to Film Photography.” We posted a Google cache link since all articles by Mr. Resnick have been taken down. The REAL reason why photographers got angry is because it's another "Film vs. Digital" article. We get it, every point Resnick writes is accurate. But everybody has their own reason for shooting film. Things went from bad to worse really quick when photographer, Mike Fraser, discovered the image of a Leica M3 is identical to the image of a Leica M3 on Ken Rockwell's website. Fraser questioned Resnick of the similarities. Resnicks response, "We must have identical Leicas." When that comment did not pass muster, the comment was deleted and ultimately sent the article into viral mode among the photography community. The watermark is in a very difficult spot to crop out. Ken places it where you really have to intentionally remove it. On 4/6 Adorama issues an article titled We Are Sorry in response to the fallout. The article acknowledges the improper use of Ken Rockwell's image and offered compensation. According to PetaPixel the amount is $1,000. Now that Adorama is on the radar, people began to audit Resnick's previous writings and discovered an article posted prior to the Ken Rockwell incident. Images from Bellamy Hunt's article, 'Camera Historica: The Sean Flynn Leica M2' details the story war photojournalist and his Leica M2. The same images in Bellamy's article were used without his approval on Adorama's blog (Google cached link). As a result, all articles written by Resnick have been taken down. MiNT MiNT gives an update on the RF-70. Bring up price and new features – Internal Flash and External flash port – Excited because this really takes instant film to a new level in analog photography. Price – Slightly more expensive than SLR670-S which comes in at $729. Photowalk Website Photographer, Martin Smith, has built a website tailored for photowalks and photo meetups. There are disadvantages to big sites like Meetup.com and Eventbrite that don't always fit the needs of a photowalk. It is quite popular in Europe and we want to help him make this a popular tool for the photo community around the world. Welcome to the Daily FRO for Feb 25th 2018. Today was a travel day to Las Vegas for WPPI and another event. I met the last person I ever expected to meet today at this event, KEN ROCKWELL. The picture is on instagram (JaredPolin) it's real and it did happen. I cam down to the lobby only to see a guy looking at me and it was Ken Rockwell, he had a smile on his face. We shook hands, took a selfie in JPEG then I knew I needed to take on in RAW which I did. If you would like to give me a call you can do so at 2674546376
Welcome back to another fun filled week of FroKnowsPhoto RAWtalk where I occasionally curse, scream, sing, rant and talk photography. This week I did not plan on ranting I only planned on sharing a few direct quotes from a certain someones website. Now I know you are asking yourself why do you read that guys site and my answer is because I want to see what he will say next. Now that that’s out of the way what did he say this time? First there was a quote about a camera being free but it costs $1,250 followed by “some people have this idea that pros only shoot in manual exposure mode”. All I can say is skip to 36:48 put your earmuffs on and get ready to be frustrated. This weeks show sponsor was RODE microphone and I featured their Invisilav which honestly will come in handy when I need to put a lav mic under my shirt. The truth of the matter is we currently just use gaff tape to stick the mics to my chest. In reality we should be using the invisilav which we are going to start doing. You will notice I had a little bit of trouble getting the included tape to stick and I have verified that it’s because it’s skin safe. My solution to this is use wig tape or gaff tape and you will be good to go. Stephen brings us the last two weeks in photo news from the new Sony A7 II to the rumor of GoPro manufacturing their own drones. Check out the photo news starting at 08:05 . Don’t forget to subscribe to the Podcast on iTunes or your iPhone to automatically have the new episodes sent right to your phone.
I have not RANTED on Ken Rockwell in a long while for a few reasons. But after reading his latest so called “educational” set up for the Nikon D3300 I finally had enough. You will find out what he said during the podcast but in my option it’s poisonous and dangerous to new photographers. The information he is giving is going to leave many beginners blaming their cameras for bad pictures since he says “the Nikon D3300 can’t take a bad picture”. Keep an ear out for the rant. My new Herman Miller chair has landed and all I can say is go take a look on their website to see the types of chairs they have. As photographers a majority of our time is spent in front of the computer yet we generally have crappy chairs to sit in. We spend good money on quality gear why skimp out on the chair we sit in. Did you photograph the blood moon? I guess I kind o front on an article named The 30 Best Instagam Blood Moon Photos. You know how people say it’s not the gear is the photographer well that’s not true when you are trying to shoot the moon. I had a chance to watch the Vivian Maier documentary and I do recommend that if it’s playing in your city that you take some time to check it out. We round out the show with FLYING SOLO and a spin of the Wheel of FRO!!!! I want to thank AllensCamera.com, RODE Microphones, ATOMOS, Herman Miller and YOU.
As the title says, Ken Rockwell is not on this week's RAWtalk, but that's not for a lack of trying. You will hear his response to my invitation in the first few minutes of this week's episode. It was a busy news week filled with new cameras from Fuji and Samsung. We'll also discuss the meritos of Instagram Video vs Vine and the latest addition to Google Street View, which now takes us to the tallest building in the world. Be sure to keep an EAR out for some secret words. When you hear something that you think is secret-word worthy, be sure to tweet it with the hashtag #RAWtalk or post it on the Facebook Fan page with the same tag. Rounding out this episode, I answer your questions during the FLYING SOLO portion of the podcast.
Getting to know yourself, your current productivity tools and how to use them correctly is a definitive step in creating flow in your productive life.Bernard M. Baruch once said, "Only as you do know yourself can your brain serve you as a sharp and efficient tool. Know your own failings, passions, and prejudices so you can separate them from what you see."Many times people ask me for the latest tool, hack or tip that will get them an edge on their life and work productivity. While I don't mind giving that advice, so often I'm baffled that more people don't look at the tools we already have available to us.Have you ever noticed that of the many tools available to us, there is usually one right tool for the job? You know you shouldn't hammer a screw into the wall or call your father with your washing machine. One of the most prevalent productivity crimes I see is using your calendar as a task or projects list. What tool may you be misusing when it comes to your own productivity system? Finally, learn how to the use the tools you have fully and correctly. Nine times out of 10 you don't need the newest features on a tech gadget that's just been released; honestly, you've lived for how many years without it and you've done pretty well, right?
