Try Notion for free by visiting https://www.notion.com/macrumors On this week's episode of The MacRumors Show, we discuss some of the latest rumors about iOS 18 such as deeper Home Screen customization, AI-generated emojis, and more. With iOS 18, Siri is expected to undergo a substantial overhaul with improved natural language processing, enabling more conversational interactions and proactive intelligence. The assistant will apparently understand and perform more complex tasks within apps. These tasks range from moving notes between folders and deleting emails to summarizing articles and recent notifications. Spotlight search will also allegedly see similar enhancements, integrating deeper with system-wide information to provide more intelligent and relevant results. In Messages, AI will suggest responses and create custom emojis based on message content. The Photos app will incorporate AI-powered retouching tools and Apple Music will offer auto-generated playlists and smoother song transitions. iOS 18 is also expected to introduce a more customizable Home Screen. Users will have the freedom to place app icons anywhere on the grid and change app icon colors. Safari is expected to gain an Intelligent Search option, summarizing key topics and phrases on web pages, and a new Web Eraser tool, which allows users to remove unwanted portions of websites. The Calculator app will be redesigned to include recent calculations and better unit conversion tools, becoming a universal app for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Apple Maps will introduce custom routes and topographic maps, enhancing navigation and outdoor activities. Accessibility is another focus area for iOS 18 with new features like Eye Tracking, which uses the front-facing camera to navigate the interface, and Vehicle Motion Cues, designed to reduce motion sickness. Music Haptics will provide tactile feedback in sync with music, and Vocal Shortcuts will enable users to assign custom phrases for Siri to execute complex tasks. The adoption of the Rich Communication Services (RCS) standard should improve messaging between iPhones and Android devices with support for higher resolution photos, audio messages, typing indicators, read receipts, and improved group chat functionality. iOS 18 is expected to be compatible with all iPhones that support iOS 17, including models as old as the iPhone XR and iPhone XS. However, iPadOS 18 may drop support for older models such as the first-generation 10.5-inch iPad Pro and the second-generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro, focusing instead on more recent devices.

Today, we've got three riveting stories for you. First, we're going to talk about the Beyond the Horn ransomware group, whose sophisticated tactics have put industries like healthcare and manufacturing on high alert. We're also going to discuss Apple's swift action against a critical zero-day vulnerability. And finally, we'll explore an innovative approach to safeguarding mobile accounts against takeover attacks, a method set to revolutionize how we understand and protect our digital identities, which affects everybody. So let's dive right in. Today's first story, from an insightful article by Daniel Frank at Unit 42 Palo Alto Networks, discusses the recent activities of the Beyond the Iron Ransomware Group. Emerging in 2022, this group has been active, targeting sectors like healthcare and manufacturing in North America, the EU, and India. Beyond the Iron's strategy has evolved from a double extortion scheme, encrypting victims' assets and demanding ransom, to a more straightforward approach of stealing data for extortion. A notable attack was on a California-based hospital where they exfiltrated 1.7 terabytes of data, including sensitive patient and employee information. Considering the mostly text-based nature of this data, 1.7 terabytes is substantial. An interesting aspect of Beyond the Iron is their possible connection to the Meiko Ransomware Group, sharing a custom .NET tool for file enumeration, registry, and clipboard data retrieval. This tool, containing Russian language elements, suggests shared tools or developers, a common practice among cybercrime groups. Beyond the Iron executes attacks by gaining initial access through stolen Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) credentials or by exploiting vulnerabilities like ProxyShell. They use public tools for lateral movement and credential dumping, employing a backdoor component for persistence. For individuals, this underscores the importance of strong password hygiene and regular checks on sites like Have I Been Pwned. For organizations, especially in healthcare and manufacturing, it emphasizes the need for robust security measures like regular patching and threat hunting. Next, we're discussing the critical zero-day patch for Apple devices released on Monday. This addresses a zero-day flaw, CVE-2020-423222, found in the WebKit browser engine, which could allow threat actors to execute arbitrary code. This bug affects a range of devices, from iPhone Xs to the latest macOS versions. Apple's response with improved checks is commendable. Users should update their devices immediately to protect against potential data compromise or device takeover. Finally, we're discussing a new defensive strategy against mobile account takeovers, highlighted in an article from Help Net Security. Developed by Dr. Luca Annibale and others, this method aims to identify weaknesses vulnerable to account takeovers in mobile devices. By cataloging security vulnerabilities and modeling account takeovers, this approach offers a detailed representation of potential security breaches. The researchers tested their methodology against various devices, finding security gaps in brands like Apple, Samsung, and Xiaomi. Google accounts showed resilience against these attack strategies. This research has implications for both users and tech companies, emphasizing the importance of security in shared accounts and the need for continuous innovation in cybersecurity defenses. Thanks for tuning into the Daily Decrypt. Stay tuned for more episodes this week, and don't miss our bonus episode this weekend on responder hijacking attacks in the Windows ecosystem. Again, thanks for listening, and we'll talk to you tomorrow.

The Secret Service confirmed Monday that it is aware of reports that the contents of Hunter Biden's iCloud account were hacked over the weekend, exposing alleged texts, pictures, and videos of the president's son doing drugs and engaging in other salacious and likely illegal activities. 4chan users claimed they hacked Biden's phone late Saturday night, posting pictures to the website's main political forum, according to the Washington Examiner. Many of the posts were taken down by the website. The Secret Service said they are “aware” of the “social media posts and claims” about Biden, but are not in position to “make public comments on potential investigative actions,” in a statement to National Review. One video purports to show Biden measuring the amount of crack he had while in conversation with a prostitute. Another alleged video shows Biden going down a water slide naked, and texts allegedly revealed show Biden claiming that President Joe Biden was in possession of five guns in 2019, despite campaigning on gun control. Many of the files posted by 4chan were already found on Biden's abandoned laptop via an iPhone XS backup, according to the Washington Examiner. Former Secret Service agent and cyber forensics expert Konstantinos “Gus” Dimitrelos previously told the outlet that the contents of the iPhone are authentic. “Based on my analysis of the iPhone, I conclude the same results as my analysis of the MacBook Pro Laptop hard drive and iCloud synced data. The person who owns and operates this iPhone XS is Robert Hunter Biden,” Dimitrelos said, according to the outlet. The abandoned laptop also previously revealed that the president knew about his son's business dealing with China, despite repeatedly claiming that he has “never spoken” to him “about his overseas business dealings.” Joe Biden left a voicemail on Hunter Biden's phone after a New York Times released a story in 2018 about the first son's business dealings with the Chinese oil giant China Energy Company Limited (CEFC), the Daily Mail first reported.

"Classic S Suhr, the best American Super Strat today?" Come on! Let's assume the bold statement that the Classic S from Suhr Guitars (suhr.com) represents the best of the modern Super Strat in the production guitar segment. Big fan of John Suhr (whom I hope to interview one of these days!!) and his work in
The German luthier Rainer Tausch (tausch-guitars.de) makes guitars that have a very classic appearance but are in fact completely revisited instruments. In the case of the 665 Raw Deluxe model, it is clearly Telecaster inspired. And yet this luthier guitar is a hollow-body with a glued neck, so it's far from the Esquire. Tausch 665
The Spanish luthier Francisco Rodriguez is the craftsman behind the Franfret brand (franfret.net). Already interviewed several times, he sent to the showroom of The Guitar Channel a Strat like no other. Merry Christmas from your friendly neighborhood Jew. While I don't celebrate the religious aspect of the holiday, I do enjoy the holiday spirit. And in 2020, whatever brings you joy - do it.My tip of the week - using your smartphone as a webcam. Now again, I'm more focused on the audio side of things, but there will always be some folks who want a video component. So I've been working with Abel Grunfeld and the folks at Riverside FM to begin offering this to my clients. When I started, I wasn't wild about my new HP laptop's built in webcam, nor the USB one that I got on Amazon. Well, turns out, the best camera I own is my iPhone Xs. And there are apps that will allow you to sync your smartphone to your laptop and use that as a camera. I've done some testing, and now my video quality can match the audio quality in my studio. Abel recommended Camo for Mac users. For Windows, I like an app called iVCam. There's a free version, but the high end version was a one time cost of only about 25 bucks.Next week, I'll do a look back at 2020 and a look ahead to 2021 in terms of podcasting, but for now, some quick news tidbits if you're looking to plug in your headphones and get some "me time" over the holiday. Incidentally, that's what tell new clients. Everyone's burnt out on Zoom, so give them a podcast and a chance to walk away from their screen.Speaking of families, nice primer by Lindsay Harris Friel from The Podcast Host for how to deal with different family members as it relates to your podcasting career. Those relatives include the "I Don't Get It," the "Reckless Cheerleader," the "Unintentional Underminer," the "Intentional Underminer," and of course "The Partner." Lindsay breaks down each of these types, and how to deal with them. https://www.thepodcasthost.com/mindset/what-my-family-thinks-of-podcasting/Is spoken word audio cutting into music streaming? An article in no less than Billboard suspects that may be the case. While music streaming subscribers are up, time spent listening is flat. Also, the article cites research from Edison that spoken word streaming was up 20% from 2014 to 2019 - with music down 5%, and that's before the pandemic and 2020 Election Cycle. https://www.billboard.com/articles/business/9500546/streaming-music-growth-stalled-factors-attention-economyI opened this show talking about audio producers wanting to include video, but turns out, the opposite is also true. There's a big video producer...wanting to do audio. Netflix, after months of rumors, has debuted an audio-only mode on their Android app. The idea is you can "watch" a show by just listening to dialogue and narration. Not sure if this will take off, but if Netflix is taking notice of audio consumption, that's worth noting. If you like this show, please feel free to share it with a fellow podcast enthusiast - that will help it grow. As always, if you need help with your podcast, you can reach me at jagindetroit.com. I leave you with my Uncle Jeff's two rules for life - today seems a good time to mention them.Know Your Audience.Be Kind.
