Our show runner and host, Cirina Catania, sat down with Tim to get the low-down and share it with you. Look around your office or studio or edit bay…how many external hard drives do you have around you? Cirina's company, Catania Studios, where this interview was recorded, manages literally hundreds of terabytes on RAID arrays and  individual hard drives…and their main server. There are drives that go on location and re-attach when the crew returns, drives that are used for backup or redundant shares in the office, drives that will ultimately end up in storage or drives that are busy working to keep our digital worlds … well, working every day. We use SoftRAID from OWC to monitor all those drives and tell us IN ADVANCE when any of them might be getting just too tired to work properly anymore OR if they are about to fail for any reason!  SoftRAID lives on our systems in each bay and works hard every day to report back to us about how our external drive are doing. OWC's Larry O'Connor, and Other World Computing, are committed to helping us understand regenerative agriculture. He explains why in this interview with host, Cirina Catania. Larry O'Connor is more than the founder and CEO of Other World Computing. He donates much of his time and a sizable percentage of the profits from OWC's business endeavors on issues that he believes need to be addressed in the world. He helps the planet and everyone and everything that inhabits it with his initiatives in support of non-profits such as "Kiss the Ground," and Charity Water. We enjoyed this interview because it is a discourse on regenerative agriculture, which is a new way to farm and which the movie exec produced by Larry, “Kiss the Ground,” highlighted during and following its release. A new sequel, “Common Ground,” has recently been released and we encourage you to search for it in your neighborhoods or by going to Kisstheground.com for more information. What is regenerative agriculture and why is it important to all of us?  This kind of subject is always interesting, and as we dig further, we find that perhaps the old way of tilling the soil may very well NOT be the best for soil health. This type of farming places emphasis on that health, which in turn produces more food with high nutritional value. According to proponents of this theory, more carbon is stored in the ground, and biodiversity flourishes. That is good for the farmers, for us, and for Mother Earth. So, take a break from your tech tasks, from scrolling, and listen in to one of our country's top business entrepreneurs as he discusses why he gets involved in films such as “Kiss the Ground,” and “Common Ground.” Tune in for another fascinating interview with OWC's Larry O'Connor. For over 15 years, Mickey H. Osterreicher has served as general counsel to the National Press Photographers Association (NPPA), where he helps support, train and advocate for First Amendment rights. Starting his journalism career in the 1970s, Mickey was a staff photojournalist as an undergraduate for his campus newspaper at the University of Buffalo. He later became an award-winning photojournalist whose work has been published and broadcast over the years by the New York Times, Time Magazine, Newsweek, USA Today, ABC World News Tonight, Nightline, Good Morning America, NBC Nightly News and ESPN. Mickey returned to UB to get his law degree in 1998, where he served as an adjunct professor. However, not only does Osterreicher have an extensive news media background, but he also wears a shield — serving for over 30 years as a reserve deputy for the Erie County Sheriff's Office. He was recognized as their ‘Reserve Deputy of the Year' in 2017. The Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) honored Osterreicher in 2015 as a “Fellow of the Society,” the highest professional honor given by the SPJ. And in 2021, he was inducted into the Buffalo Broadcasters Hall of Fame. Today, most of Mickey's time revolves around training journalists and police officers about how to respect the 1st Amendment and generally get along better since both perform necessary work, usually in close proximity, especially during times of crime and crises.  In the recent May 2023 E&P Cover Story: “The shifting balances of press powers. While First Amendment champions work to affirm the free press, others seek to undermine it,” Osterreicher stated, “(Saying) ‘I know my rights' to a police officer today — whether you're covering a news event, or a demonstration or protest — is often the last sentence you say before they order you to turn around and put your hands behind your back." Mickey also shares the same concerns as many leaders in our industry about the blurred lines of defining who is a journalist in today's multiplatform, social media-driven news ecosystem. Osterreicher stated,  “When I was a journalist, it was pretty obvious. I was the noob with three Nikon SLRs around my neck, and nobody else had a camera. Or when I was in television, and I had a big Beta camera on my shoulder and press credentials,” he recalled. “Now, you've got young folks who are being sent out — whether they're reporters or photographers — with iPhones. They look the same as the protesters.” In this episode of “E&P Reports,” we go one-on-one with National Press Photographers Association (NPPA)'s general counsel, Mickey Osterreicher, to gain some advice on how both the news industry and the nation's law enforcement can work better together to respect the 1st Amendment, while each goes about their tough jobs during times of crime and crises. We also chat with him about his perspectives on helping define who a journalist is, especially now, as so many citizens are recording news on their personal devices.

Abstract: Understanding how the atrial and ventricular chambers of the heart maintain their distinct identity is a prerequisite for treating chamber-specific diseases. Here, we selectively inactivated the transcription factor Tbx5 in the atrial working myocardium of the neonatal mouse heart to show that it is required to maintain atrial identity. Atrial Tbx5 inactivation downregulated highly chamber specific genes such as Myl7 and Nppa, and conversely, increased the expression of ventricular identity genes including Myl2. Using combined single nucleus transcriptome and open chromatin profiling, we assessed genomic accessibility changes underlying the altered atrial identity expression program, identifying 1846 genomic loci with greater accessibility in control atrial cardiomyocytes compared to KO aCMs. 69% of the control-enriched ATAC regions were bound by TBX5, demonstrating a role for TBX5 in maintaining atrial genomic accessibility. These regions were associated with genes that had higher expression in control aCMs compared to KO aCMs, suggesting they act as TBX5-dependent enhancers. We tested this hypothesis by analyzing enhancer chromatin looping using HiChIP and found 510 chromatin loops that were sensitive to TBX5 dosage. Of the loops enriched in control aCMs, 73.7% contained anchors in control-enriched ATAC regions. Together, these data demonstrate a genomic role for TBX5 in maintaining the atrial gene expression program by binding to atrial enhancers and preserving tissue specific chromatin architecture of atrial enhancers. Link to article: https://bit.ly/3I6ECmcIn 2021, China put major restrictions on gaming in the country and even stopped licensing new games. As a result, 14,000 gaming-related businesses have deregistered and effectively shut down since July of last year.China did more than just ban video games for kids during school nights in 2021. The country's National Press and Publication Administration (NPPA) also froze its game licensing process. The NPPA hasn't approved any new titles in six months, making this the longest amount of time China has suspended the process. While thousands of small companies have shut down, larger ones have adapted to the stalled gaming industry in China by looking to new markets and laying off employees. Tencent is opening a branch in Singapore, while ByteDance — parent company of TikTok — has been laying off employees at Ohayoo, a gaming company focused on the Chinese market.Ohayoo's 150 games have been downloaded over 500 million times, but success hasn't made the company immune. ByteDance has now delayed Ohayoo's IPO to the end of 2022 and has laid off “nearly 100” employees. This is far from the first time China has restricted gaming within its borders. All video game consoles had previously been banned for 15 years, with authorities citing a concern over childhood development. China's president has spoken out against video game addiction among minors and believes that making gaming for more than a few hours illegal was the best solution. He's also capped the amount of money children can spend on games to 200 yuan ($31 USD) a month. But China's gaming restrictions for kids haven't exactly worked. SupChina reported that once Chinese children use up their limited gaming time, they turn to social media and watch others game. And on the internet, kids can pay to borrow adults' accounts for a few hours so they can circumvent the rules for minors. With children's gaming freedoms restricted and a national moratorium on new game licenses, it's unclear if the country — which has called video games “spiritual opium” — will change its tune anytime soon.Support the show (https://bit.ly/2XdAlJC)

I have writer's block because of my guest. In fact, describing William Snyder is so difficult that I've been waiting to write this for two days. I'm ready to give it a shot now, but let me say up front that there is little chance I will be able to convey in writing the talent of William Snyder. Professor William Snyder - yup, he's a professor - is a four-time Pulitzer Prize winning photographer and editor. A graduate of the Rochester Institute of Technology, William returned there 27 years after graduating from the Professional Photography program to chair the Photojournalism program. Now, as the Director of the Advertising Photography Program, he continues teaching, and has been chosen as an RIT Outstanding Alumnus, selected for the The Isaiah Thomas Award in Publishing, and has won the Frank J. Romano Endowed Prize for Publishing Entrepreneurship. In between his graduating and then returning to RIT in 2008 William had a legendary career in journalism. After a few years at The Miami News, he moved on to The Dallas Morning News. For 15 years he was a staff photographer, winning many top photography awards, including a Pulitzer Prize for Explanatory Journalism in 1989 (along with a DMN reporter and artist) for their special report on a 1985 airplane crash, the 1991 Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography for his pictures of ill and orphaned children living in desperate conditions in Romania and, along with fellow photographer and RIT grad Ken Geiger, the 1993 Pulitzer Prize for Spot News photography for their photographic coverage of the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. Moving up the ranks, Snyder served as the Night Photo Editor, Assignments Editor, Metro/Suburban Photo Editor, and Assistant Director of Photography in the DMN's aggressive Collin County bureau. I hope you are starting to see why telling Williams story is difficult.... his career path is amazing. In 2005 William was named The Morning News' Director of Photography. In 2006 the DMN staff won numerous awards, including: The Pulitzer Prize in Breaking News Photography for their coverage of Hurricane Katrina; 12 awards in Pictures of the Year International including Photographer of the Year; Four awards in NPPA's Best Of Photojournalism; and APME Texas Star Photographer of the Year. We're thinking more about representation, and we're examining where we fall short as both individuals and outlets in covering the communities we serve. I like to think I've been on a constant path of reckoning in this area for many years. I continue to evolve, and so does the world - and the world of journalism. I try to use this space - the blog and podcast - to bring discussion and conversation where it might not always exist. I found a thoughtful conversation partner in Kainaz Amaria. She's the visuals editor at Vox, and she's the 2020 recipient of the NPPA's John Long Ethics Award, given to "an individual who has, through his or her efforts, upheld, shaped, and promoted ethical behavior in all forms of visual journalism." She works diligently to promote representation in both the stories she oversees and the journalism circles in which she runs. Amaria is my guest on Episode 77 of the Telling the Story podcast. She is also a speaker at the upcoming NPPA Virtual Video Storytelling Workshop, taking place August 7 & 8 online. I'm directing the workshop and am thrilled to bring on two dozen talented journalists to present about topics from COVID-19 to digital dominance. Amaria is one of three panelists speaking about representation in storytelling. Sign up now, and get ready to be inspired. → The post PODCAST EPISODE #77: Kainaz Amaria, visuals editor, Vox appeared first on Telling The Story.

She graduated from the photojournalism program in the Newhouse School at Syracuse University in May of 2018. During the summer of 2016, Moriah interned with The Hill, a political newspaper on Capitol Hill, as a press photographer covering hearings, press conferences and breaking news on Capitol Hill and at the White House. Following this experience, she spent a week interning at Annie Leibovitz's studio in New York City, assisting with administrative tasks and researching shoot concepts. Moriah was a staff photographer for Syracuse University's independent newspaper, The Daily Orange, and previously held a position as an assistant photo editor. This past summer, Moriah was the photography/videography intern for the Naples Daily News in Southwest Florida. She recently completed a position as an assistant digital content producer at Oregon Public Broadcasting (OPB), an NPR affiliated radio station. At OPB, Moriah pitched and produced a short documentary video about a family with a 4-year-old daughter battling terminal brain cancer. Personal projects are often associated with aspects of childhood in how young adolescents cope with trauma. Moriah documented the journey of a 13-year-old girl with a rare and terminal brain cancer for almost two years in hopes of de-stigmatizing the ways in which the public conceptualizes childhood cancer. The story has been published in the Washington Post, National Geographic, and NPR. Moriah is a member of WPOW, NPPA, and the White House News Photographers Association. Moriah is the 2018 recipient of WPOW's Lena Grant, the 2018 recipient of NPPF's Reid Blackburn and Richard Clarkson Scholarships, and the 2017 recipient of the Virginia News Photographers Association George Smith Memorial Scholarship. Moriah won first place in the 2018 Hearst Journalism Awards Program for Picture Story/Series and gold in the documentary category of the 73rd College Photographer of the Year contest. Moriah attended the Eddie Adams Workshop XXX and the New York Times 2018 Portfolio Review. If only Sam Raimi were on social media. Then perhaps the acclaimed director of The Evil Dead, A Simple Plan, and the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man series would learn of how one of his earliest movies influenced one of today's most talented journalists. Forrest Sanders watched The Evil Dead as a student and became enamored with Raimi's shot composition and pacing. He developed a passion for shooting and editing that evolved into a career as a solo video journalist. Today Sanders has his own honors: numerous Emmys, two new regional Edward R. Murrow awards won last week, and a variety of accolades from the NPPA. This past year he was named its National Solo Video Journalist of the Year. Sanders is my guest on Episode #71 of the Telling the Story podcast. I loved this conversation. Sanders has quickly become a leader in the storytelling community, and he speaks with both introspection and clarity of purpose. We chatted about the power of early influences, the need to fuel your passions, and the way to carve your own path in a newsroom where that might seem difficult. And yes, we discussed Mr. Raimi (and Brian DePalma too!) for several enlightening minutes. → The post PODCAST EPISODE #71: Forrest Sanders, solo video journalist, WSMV-TV appeared first on Telling The Story.

Her credits include the New York Times, NBC Left Field, BBC, and Huffington Post. Her awards include the NPPA, Overseas Press Club, and American Society and News Editors. Her projects include captivating documentaries of varying lengths, shot anywhere from south Florida to East Africa. And she's 25 years old. Emily Kassie has carved an extraordinary space for herself less than five years into her professional career, but it's no accident. She shoots with skillful craft and composition, and she covers heavy topics with an expertise and sensitivity that allow her stories to shine. But more than that, she fights for those topics, which so often get pooh-poohed in mainstream publications and stations as too difficult or uninteresting for a mass audience. She is my guest on Episode #61 of the Telling the Story podcast. I always seek guests who have developed a clear voice and can guide others in doing the same. Kassie fits this mold perfectly. I sensed in our conversation a journalist who knows what she wants to accomplish, who to seek out for help, and how to execute projects that live up to her pitch - often as a solo act, shooting and editing her own reports. I admire how Kassie uses her talents and focus: to fight for those who don't often enough get their stories told. → The post PODCAST EPISODE #61: Emily Kassie, award-winning documentary filmmaker appeared first on Telling The Story.

Stacy L. Pearsall got her start as an Air Force photographer at the age of 17. During her time in service, she traveled to over 41 countries, and attended the Military Photojournalism Program at S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. During three combat tours, she earned the Bronze Star Medal and Air Force Commendation with Valor for combat actions in Iraq. Though disabled and retired from military service, Pearsall continues to work worldwide as an independent photographer, and is an author, educator, military consultant, public speaker and founder of the Veterans Portrait Project. Presently, Pearsall’s work is featured in a joint exhibition, “The Face of Battle, Americans at War 9/11 to Now,” at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery.   Pearsall was one of only two women to win National Press Photographers Association (NPPA) Military Photographer of the Year competition, and the only woman to have earned it twice. She's been awarded the Carolinas Freedom Foundation Freedom Award, honored with the Daughters of the American Revolution Margaret Cochran Corbin Award, lauded by the White House as a Champion of Change, and holds an honorary doctoral degree from The Citadel. Pearsall has served as a nominating juror for the Pulitzer Prize and held a presidential-appointed board member position for the NPPA. She’s held a position on the advisory board of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at The Citadel since 2009.   While transitioning out of military service in 2008, Pearsall purchased the Charleston Center for Photography (CCP). She grew the once grass roots photo club into a reputable brand for photography education, studio rentals, fine art print labs and gallery under one roof. As CCP grew, so did her personal endeavors with the Veterans Portrait Project. In order to pursue her personal project full time, Pearsall sold the CCP in the fall of 2013.   The PDN “Personal Project” award-winning series Veterans Portrait Project (VPP) began while Pearsall rehabilitated from combat injuries sustained in Iraq. Spending hours in VA waiting rooms surrounded by veterans from every generation and branch of service, Pearsall was compelled to honor and thank them in the only way she knows how, photography. Pearsall has traveled coast to coast documented roughly 6,000 veterans in over 100+ engagements in 27 states, hosted numerous community-based exhibitions showcasing veterans from their respective hometowns, and took part in a USAA sponsored YouTube docu-series of her adventures on the road. In honor of the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War, and those who fought valiantly, several VPP images are displayed on the walls within the Pentagon.   Between her photography, teaching and speaking engagements, Pearsall completed her first photography book, Shooter: Combat from Behind the Camera, which received worldwide praise as "A book of the highest levels in the annals of combat journalism." And her second book, A Photojournalist's Field Guide: In the Trenches with Combat Photographer Stacy Pearsall, is "A must have for every aspiring photographer out there, and even pros can pick up a few new tricks to help them become better photographers."

Last June I flew to Cleveland to cover the championship parade for the NBA's Cavaliers. I stood in a swarm of a million Clevelanders and witnessed one of the most stellar scenes in sports. I also witnessed one of the most stellar sights in photojournalism: the editing of Chad Nelson. The photographer from KARE-TV in the Twin Cities was, like myself, called to help our sister station in Cleveland. We worked on separate stories, and after I completed mine, I stopped by Chad's desk to say hello. Within minutes, I was receiving a master class in color and composition. I had always admired the care with which Nelson treats his video, but in Cleveland I gained a deeper appreciation. Nelson works at a station that prides itself on its storytelling culture, and he carries that culture in every story he shoots. Last month, it paid off. Nelson received three pieces of extraordinary news: He was named the NPPA's Central Top Region's Photographer of the Year. He was named a finalist for the NPPA's Ernie Crisp Photographer of the Year award. He was also named a finalist for the NPPA's Editor of the Year award. Now he is my guest on Episode #53 of the Telling the Story podcast. → The post PODCAST EPISODE #53: Chad Nelson, photojournalist, KARE-TV appeared first on Telling The Story.

The morning after he sat down for this podcast, Oliver Janney hopped on a plane from Washington, DC to Norman, Oklahoma. Why? He could not pass up the chance to be a part of the faculty at the famed NPPA News Video Workshop. Janney has a pretty busy day job; he is the senior field production supervisor at the DC bureau for CNN. He monitors dozens of photojournalists who fly all over the world to cover the biggest stories. But he also used to be one of those photojournalists in the field, and before he reached the national heights of CNN, he got a kick-start by attending the workshop in Norman. Janney is my guest on Episode #52 of the Telling The Story podcast. "That one week truly changed the trajectory of my career," Janney told me. "I thought I knew what I was doing before that, and I came out of that week questioning everything, excited, and just fired up." I met Janney two weeks ago when we both spoke at a different NPPA workshop: the Northern Short Course in Fairfax, Va. I truly enjoyed hearing his perspective as a photojournalist who has experienced both local and national newsrooms. I wanted to bring his insights to the recorded audience of this podcast, and Janney happily obliged. → The post PODCAST EPISODE #52: Oliver Janney, senior field production supervisor, CNN appeared first on Telling The Story.

How to get a client to pay you, how to get a testimonial from a client, and what to do when your work is stolen by another freelancer. Do you have a question of your own? Shoot us an email!  Want to support the show? Leave us a review on iTunes! -- Freelance FAQ: How do I ensure a client pays my invoice? Always start with a deposit -- typically 50%. This guarantees your time and services. Before sending over the final project, ensure you collect the remaining 50% first. (You don’t need to do this exact split, but collecting 50-100% upfront is the most straightforward way to ensure timely payment and a quality client) Use a contract, and in it, stipulate that the intellectual property is yours and usage is illegal until payment in full is received. Clarify your payment schedule and refund policy in the same contract Attaching payment to milestones is an excellent practice for larger projects If a client is curious why you don’t offer refunds, clarify the time investment and that you have to turn down other work to complete this project. Make it as easy as possible for the client to pay (e.g. Paypal, Stripe, Bonsai). Automate reminders for the client to pay. Until the client signs the contract and pays your deposit, do NOT start work. This stage is where you spend your time understanding, evaluating, and explaining things to the client. Once they pay, you should take a more active role. As always, don’t give them any legitimate reasons not to pay you. Communicate, be on time, and produce quality work. Clients who have issues paying at the start are likely to have issues paying you at the end of a project. Trust your gut in these instances. As you get more experience, learn what to charge for, and what to offer as a free bonus. Friendly emails and phone calls will cover you the vast majority of the time. The more direct the communication method, the harder it is to ignore.   Freelance FAQ: How do you get testimonials from clients? Ask for one after a successful client engagement. Reach out to past clients a few weeks or months down the line; see how the project is doing. While you have their ear, ask for a testimonial. Make it as easy as possible for clients to give you a testimonial. Make your request short and to the point. Offer some light direction Follow up if you don’t hear back within a week. If a client reveals they’re dissatisfied with your work and they won’t give you a testimonial, don’t treat this as a loss. Follow up; ask about the issues they experienced with you and what you can do to improve.   Feedback from the Inferno: What do I do about another freelancer who stole my work? (This segment originally premiered over at The Freelancers Union.) I know you’ve addressed clients stealing work before, but I’m in a slightly different situation. Another photographer – one who I’ve never met – has one my pieces in his portfolio and he’s claiming himself as the creator. What should I do? Do I have any recourse, or should I just let it go? – A picture-perfect freelancer   No need to take the Elsa philosophy; there are three things you can do. Start by writing a polite request for them to take down your work. After that, you can file a DMCA takedown. Here’s a basic breakdown from the NPPA on how to do that. All you need to do is find the ISP hosting your image and draft your takedown notice. Finally, you can hire a lawyer to send them a cease a desist. I wouldn’t recommend this one; it’s not going to be worth your time and effort, and attorneys – in addition to being expensive – tend to take cases like this one in very specific circumstances, e.g. if you’ve registered your photo before the infringement. One thing you should not do is go straight to shaming the perpetrator online; take the high road before you consider the low one. It’s important to stick up for yourself and take necessary steps to protect your work, but it’s unlikely that this will in any way cost you work or somehow tarnish your reputation. Starting an online mob, however, has the potential to do both these things, so tread carefully. --  Questions? Episode ideas? Talk to Clients From Hell or Bryce Bladon on Twitter. Before you listen to this podcast, you need to watch a video. This video. This is a snippet from an interview with Will Ferrell, where host Katie Couric plays a clip of the actor's work in college as an aspiring sportscaster. At the 42-second mark, you see Ferrell pontificating about a beauty pageant, deadpanning about the contestants while a co-anchor nods graciously and holds Ferrell's microphone. That co-anchor is John Le, and he is my guest on this episode of the Telling The Story podcast. We all know what became of Ferrell, but his sidekick in that clip has developed an illustrious career of his own. Le is regarded as one of the top feature reporters in the industry and has won five regional Edward R. Murrow awards along with a rising stack of regional Emmys. He is a finalist for this year's NPPA national Best of Photojournalism award for Reporting. He is also a hoot. Before you listen to this podcast, watch this video: This is a compilation from the tremendous, NPPA award-winning photography team at WBFF-TV in Baltimore, profiling the extraordinary week surrounding the death and funeral of Freddie Gray. When major stories break -- and then last for seven straight days of intense coverage -- one can ultimately lose sight of all of the moments that comprise it. But during a tumultuous week in Baltimore, the WBFF team stood out for its riveting images and poignant coverage, which come together in the piece above. That story also sets the table for Episode #30 of the Telling The Story podcast, featuring one of the station's reporters, Kathleen Cairns. "It doesn't matter if your shift ended," Cairns told me. "You go for the story." That's how Cairns and photographer Jed Gamber, who had both just finished their shift the Monday of Gray's funeral, found themselves untethered to a live truck when riots broke out. While the rest of the news team stayed live with continuous coverage, Cairns and Gamber collected compelling video and put together this memorable story, which I shouted out recently on this blog: Cairns has served as a reporter in Baltimore for 25 years, and she has won numerous awards during that quarter-century. In this case, she brought wisdom, tenacity, and -- most importantly -- context to a volatile story. → The post PODCAST EPISODE #30: Kathleen Cairns, reporter, WBFF-TV appeared first on Telling The Story.
