Sony has announced the FE 16mm F1.8 G (SEL16F18G), a premium G Lens that combines the expressive power of a high-resolution ultra-wide angle with high portability thanks to its compact, lightweight design, allowing creators to express their creativity in an extensive range of still and video shooting scenes. When paired with the latest Sony Alpha series cameras this lens is great for scenery, architecture, starry skies and more, whilst also offering outstanding close-up capabilities alongside precise and quiet AF (autofocus). Outstanding resolution at ultra-wide 16 mm angles of view The FE 16mm F1.8 G is an ideal lens for creating dynamic and spectacular wide-angle perspectives. The optical design includes two AA (Advanced Aspherical) elements for stunning image resolution at all apertures. One Super ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass element and three ED elements suppress chromatic aberration right out to the image periphery, whilst an optimised coating minimises flare and ghosting. Supreme G Lens bokeh and outstanding close-up performance This new G Lens delivers stunning bokeh with its large F1.8 maximum aperture, 11-blade circular aperture. Close-up performance is excellent with a minimum focus distance of 0.15 m/0.5 ft and maximum magnification of 0.25x when using AF (0.13 m/0.43 ft, 0.30x for MF). All of this makes it possible to capture unique wide-angle perspectives with deep, exquisite bokeh. Large-aperture ultra-wide performance in a compact lens The use of aspherical lens elements in the FE 16mm F1.8 G, including Sony's high-precision AA (Advanced Aspherical) lens, has made it possible to create a full-frame ultra-wide lens that is a compact 73.8 x 75 ? mm (3 x 3 inch) and weighs just 304 g (10.8 oz). It is small, lightweight, and mobile whilst delivering spectacular imaging performance for a wide range of subjects including landscapes, architecture, starry skies, and more. Fast, precise autofocus supports high-level imaging Two XD (extreme dynamic) linear motors ensure fast, precise AF and tracking. A control algorithm developed specifically for the XD linear motors achieves enhanced response that largely negates delay and vibration that are likely to occur when driving a large-diameter focus lens group, for exceptionally quiet, low-vibration operation. All of this makes it possible for the FE 16mm F1.8 G to capture important moments when shooting active, fast-moving subjects. Refined, stable performance for video The FE 16mm F1.8 G's advanced lens technology reduces focus breathing for smooth video footage. The breathing compensation function provided in compatible Alpha bodies is also supported, and in-body Active Mode[ii] image stabilisation can make it easy to capture stable wide-angle video whilst walking. What's more, the new lens accepts standard 67 mm front filter and is easy to balance on a gimbal. Comprehensive control and solid reliability A focus ring, focus hold button, focus mode switch, aperture ring, and iris lock switch are provided and alternative functions can be assigned to the focus hold button. The aperture ring provides hands-on control, while a click ON/OFF switch adds versatility, and a Focus mode switch allows instant autofocus/manual switching. Lastly, a dust and moisture resistant design[iii] and fluorine front-element coating maximises reliability and durability. Pricing and Availability The FE 16mm F1.8 G will be available in April 2025 for approximately €1,000 EUR at a variety of Sony's authorised dealers. In this bonus episode of The Cinematography Podcast, we interview Moses Bwayo and Christopher Sharp, who collaborated as directors on Bobi Wine: The People's President. The film is nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. Co-director and producer Christopher Sharp grew up in Uganda and was a fan of Bobi Wine's music. He met Bobi and his wife Barbie in London. Christoper says, “When I met him, he'd just run to be an independent member of parliament and he was sort of transitioning from being solely a musician into an activist and a politician. When he told me what he was about to sacrifice, it seemed pretty obvious that we needed to stick with him and see where it went.” Bobi Wine (Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu) had grown up in the slums of Kampala, Uganda and through his musical talent, had risen to become an extremely popular and famous Afrobeat musician. Bobi's music often communicates a socially conscious message aimed at political change. He put himself through university, where he met his wife Barbie. Political activism was extremely important to him, so Bobi successfully ran as an independent candidate for Uganda's parliament. He then decided to run for president against the dictator Yoweri Museveni, who has been in power for 38 years. Christopher brought the idea of making the documentary to Moses Bwayo, a Ugandan journalist and filmmaker. Moses followed Bobi with cameras for five years, sometimes with a small crew, using a monopod and available light. Moses used the Sony FS7 and the smaller Sony Alpha a7 III. He often had to just run and gun, serving as both cameraman and director, documenting the tense and frequently dangerous situations Bobi, his family and Moses himself encountered. “We wanted to tell a story of this young, talented musician who comes out of the ghetto to inspire the nation, and he rises into politics and the coalitions he was building in parliament and the bills he was trying to bring. But, as we kept filming, it was very dangerous for him and there was a few attempted assassinations on him. More and more we realized the camera was actually a protection to him... So we just kept on going and going.” Uganda has been under the control of Yoweri Museveni since 1986. Museveni uses the might of the military police and his political operatives in Parliament to stay in power. When Bobi announced he was going to run for president against Museveni, the military police stepped up their aggressive attacks on him, his family and his campaign workers. “We knew that the closer we stuck with him and his wife and people close to him, it would bring some level of protection, and indeed, even the days I spent under house arrest with Bobby and Barbie, what worried us was that the military and police would break into the house at any moment. But I think what stopped them is when they knew that there was a cameraman in that house- it probably stopped them from breaking into the house.” Moses and the crew risked their lives to make the film. “I was arrested a few times. I was locked up in jail. I was interrogated, and I was shot in the face close to the election.” Fortunately, Moses recovered from his gunshot wound and the documentary continued. The political situation in Uganda had become very violent, so before they released the film, Moses and his family decided to flee and are seeking asylum in the United States. Though Museveni won election again through terrifying attacks and imprisonment of Bobi and his supporters, Bobi still goes back to Uganda and continues to risk his life to speak out against the government. “This story is still happening today. It's urgent. Christopher and I, we've been thinking maybe we should find a way to start filming again because the situation has not improved, and we have this incredible access, we have this story still happening right now. And the camera had become like a protection to them and now we feel like we're indebted to this struggle.

To be a real voice for fitness, an advocate for health and behavior change, your voice quality will matter. As AI-driven voice-overs may be able to make you sound better than you actually sound, this may be a podcast who's time is past, yet I think if you can make your voice become something that conveys confidence, authority, and simultaneously inspires hope and action steps in your audience, I bet you'd say, yes please. And the truth is there are voice qualities that make it difficult for people to want to listen to you. If you want your voice to be music to someone's ears, there are things you can do. One obstacle you'll have to overcome is awareness of it. It's nearly impossible to hear our own voices as someone else does. Definitely when we're speaking we have a very different experience than anyone else might hearing us. The input is coming through a combination of the skull bones internally and through the air externally. A 2005 study showed our own reality of our voice tends to be much different than what other listeners hear. We are more harsh judges and tend not to like our voices. So do cut yourself a break. Do listen to your own video, audio but also realize we have a unique experience listening to ourselves compared to someone else's experience. Be a Voice for Fitness : How to Fix Your Flaws Get feedback. If you've ever had someone say, it's hard to hear you, speak up, or a mean-girl (it's almost always a woman unfortunately, not everyone has gotten the message that we're being nice to each other now) say something like, “I can't stand to listen to a voice like that - like fingernails on a chalkboard” then listen.. A little. You don't have to be the voice for everyone just for those who are going to love working with you. And sometimes sound quality can be fixed! With a combination of free, low cost or higher investments, even voice exercises. So, if you discover or know that your voice isn't as smooth or as strong as you'd like it to be, what can you do? There are some ways to improve what you're doing. A Better Mic Back in 2012 when I first started podcasting, someone said the best mic was the Blue Yeti. I got one. I hadn't a clue about what I was doing or how I was doing it, but I knew if it was going to be listened to, it had to sound good. And that thing is way more reasonable today, and actually I retired mine, because even after careful packing it was not producing the kind of sound I needed. So, during the pandemic the entire podcast set up at Voice for Fitness changed. You may want and need a mixer, headphones and a high quality mic. But at the very least you want a high quality microphone and a room set up for acoustics - with carpet or rugs, things on the walls and ceilings, or I've known podcasters who record in a closet. If you want the list of items I use as a part of my setup from platform to tech, stay tuned til the end and I'll share those. Improve Your Voice Quality Some of the same things that make the difference behind a richer more powerful voice are also going to support your pelvic floor muscles. Any hints? Breathing. Deeper breathing that comes from your diaphragm supports your voice too. You may be doing planks all day every day but if you're not doing diaphragmatic breathing your core is missing the foundation it needs! And so is your voice. Singers sing and cheerleaders project from their diaphragm and you should too even when your mic is 2 inches from your mouth and you could whisper. Cheat Use the audio adjustments available to you in your movie editor and garage band (anyone using that anymore?). This isn't ideal because sooner or later you're going to be asked to speak… or do a media appearance or keynote or lead a breakout session. Voice Tips for Health & Fitness Pros Before You Record: Hydrate Posture - try standing! Or move for a few minutes before ! (working out is easy, sitting is not) Smile! Warm ups: lala, tikita takata or Peter Piper picked.. , papapa, dadada, bababa, ar-tic-u-late Diaphragmatic breathing Know your script OR … bullet points so you're NOT reading Some good rules: Sound when sound, quiet when quiet. In this episode, John Dickow is joined by Sally French, the renowned Drone Girl from thedronegirl.com, to discuss the question: What are the good alternatives to DJI drones? They dive into the reasons people seek alternatives, including patriotism, anti-China sentiment, and a desire to stand out from the crowd. However, finding viable alternatives proves to be challenging, particularly for budget-conscious consumers.Sally sheds light on the limited options available, especially in the sub-$2,000 range, where DJI reigns supreme. She recommends the Skydio 2 drone as an excellent option, but cautions that it might currently be out of stock. Moreover, for those with a higher budget, the Sony Air Peak Drone and Skyfish Drone provide great alternatives for professional photographers using Sony Alpha cameras. The discussion explores the dominance of DJI in the consumer drone market and the struggles faced by other companies attempting to compete. While some American companies produce enterprise-level drones, consumer-level alternatives remain scarce due to production costs and infrastructure limitations. As the conversation unfolds, they reflect on the possibility of emerging technologies from the commercial sector eventually making their way to consumers, akin to the evolution of computers. The future of the drone industry remains an intriguing subject, entangled with technological advancements, politics, and legislation. For more insightful articles and drone tips, visit Sally French's website, thedronegirl.com. If you have any drone-related queries, submit them at ydqa.io or through the Drone Launch Connect community.

And we're back! Thank you so much for your patience as I, JV, get back in the saddle to host the Pocketnow Weekly Podcast. I never closed the door on hosting this long running show, but I did find that I had to take care of my own stuff, personal and professional, as I juggled so many different projects at any given time. I want to give thanks to the Pocketnow team for always being understanding and patient with me, not to mention them giving me the space to do everything I do in whatever manner that keeps me healthy in body and spirit. That being said, I had a great opportunity to bring back the podcast because some of our friends were together with me on a wonderful trip -- the Sony Kando Trip. Made primarily as a way for photographer and Sony Alpha camera enthusiasts and influencers to get together, the small core group of tech friends were also in attendance and I got two of them -- Thunder E of Booredatwork and David Cogen, TheUnlockr -- to join me as we talked about the entire lovely week and the Sony Xperia 5 IV. Look forward to future episodes and I'll do my best to bring them out on a consistent basis -- but do bear with me as I get my feet wet again as the host of the Pocketnow Weekly Podcast! MORE megapixels, too, with up to 200 megapixels... and it has one more trick: A CURVED SENSOR! We discuss the rumors, whether making a medium format camera in 2022 makes any sense, and what we think Sony might actually release.
