Warm inside an all-weather coat. Facing out across the water. Sat, boots wedged against the top ridge of the slanted seawall. There's rain in the air. Thirty minutes to take in this wild estuary place, you tell yourself. Right of scene the small Essex town of Burnham-on-Crouch. Directly ahead across the water Wallasea Island. Low lying. A vegetated slip of green land and an RSPB nature reserve. Left of scene wild swirling water stretches seven miles to the North Sea. Sit tight, here on the seawall. This is empty time, to listen to the landscape. Wind from the east flattens the inflowing tide. Presses down the surface into shallow shifting wavelets. Translucent wavelets, that wash briskly along the concrete footings of the seawall. As time passes, and so very slowly, a warm hum slides into view. Harmonious. Reassuring. It's a ship. A ship approaching. Gradually, it draws level. Gradually, it crosses your line of view. Then, with clear water ahead it increases power. On a heading out to sea. This landscape is sparse. Beautiful. Bleak. Ektachrome bleak. * This is the very last segment of an amazing overnight recording the Lento box captured several years ago from the seawall just east of Burnham-on-Crouch. When we came back to collect the box it was waterlogged and we feared the whole recording was lost. Somehow it survived which makes all the episodes captured from this incredibly exposed location extra special. Listen to all the other segments in episodes 86, 90, 96, 111 and 126 - all listed in our post on episodes from Dengie.

Sean Bobbitt thinks good cinematography is composed of a series of very carefully crafted and decided upon images. He began his career as a news camera shooter, but once he began to work on documentaries and features, Sean learned that each shot is not just coverage to edit together. After working in news and documentary for several years, Sean decided he wanted to transition into working on dramatic films, so he took a cinematography class with acclaimed cinematographer Billy Williams, and it changed his life. He knew he wanted to become a cinematographer. He soon got his first feature film job working on Wonderland, directed by Michael Winterbottom. Judas and the Black Messiah is a gripping biographical drama about FBI informant William O'Neal and Black Panther Chairman Fred Hampton. O'Neil is a small-time criminal who agrees to go undercover for the FBI and infiltrate the Chicago headquarters of the Black Panthers. O'Neal's tips directly result in Chairman Hampton's assassination in his bed by police in 1969. Sean found the script gripping and incredibly relevant to today's ongoing issues of racial inequality. He realized he knew little about the Black Panthers and this chapter of racial injustice in America, and he needed to help tell the story. After reading the script, Sean met with director Shaka King, who brought hundreds of stills of the Black Panthers and talked Sean through the screenplay. Together, Sean and King began to explore what they wanted to visually create. The photographs became the basis for the look and color palette of the film. All the color photos were Kodachrome or Ektachrome, so they had a slightly faded look. Sean wanted high contrasts with punchy primary colors and worked closely with the DIT to get the color grade for the look he wanted. Previously, Sean had worked on a few biopics with director Steve McQueen, such as 12 Years a Slave and Hunger. Sean finds McQueen a very unique artist and a fantastic collaborator. They've worked together for so long that they are very good at communicating on set. McQueen loves long takes, and really began exploring those with Hunger- the film features a 16 and a half minute take, based on the idealogical concept that if you simply hold the frame, the audience begins to project themselves into the action. If there's no cut, the audience can't be reminded it's a film and can't be let off the hook. Sean learned to compose very considered frames where the action happens. One of the main concepts of the movie Shame was that most New Yorkers live their lives in high rises in the air, and the characters in the film only came down for sordid reasons. Most of the takes in Shame are also very long and purposefully make the viewer feel uncomfortable. You can watch Judas and the Black Messiah in select theaters and streaming on HBO Max. https://www.judasandtheblackmessiah.com/ Find out even more about this episode, with extensive show notes and links: http://camnoir.com/ep114/ Sponsored by Hot Rod Cameras: www.hotrodcameras.com Website: www.camnoir.com Facebook: @cinepod Instagram: @thecinepod Twitter: @ShortEndz
On this episode, we’re trying our hands at E-6 home development! Vania shot 35mm Ektachrome, and Eric shot a couple of Provia 4×5 sheets. Here are some shots from developing:Vania: IG, Flickr, ZinesEric: IG, Flickr, Zines, ECN-2 KitsAll Through a Lens: IG, Website, Patreon
We’re talking about Kodak Ektachrome – the history of the film and the various processes used to develop it. We’ll also give you some advice on shooting and developing expired film. We’ve got the answering machine question, some more trivia, AND we’ll give a call to Janet (@janet_built_a_wet_plate on IG), the woman who built her own wetplate camera. After a bit of small talk and trivia, we get down to it! First up is the answering machine question:Apart from photography, does other analog media play a role in your life?We got a bunch of wonderful responses – and two people who still use reel-to-reels – amazing!LET’S TALK ABOUT EXPIRED FILMOn our first segment, we both talk about our experiences with shooting and developing expired film. We get specific and continuously warn that there are no rules. That whole “one stop for every decade” thing isn’t exactly bunk, but it’s not something you can ever count on.First we go over how to shoot it – everything depends upon the original ISO and how the film was stored. You likely only know one of these things, so good luck! Then we go over processing. Basically, box speed always. Here are some of Eric’s oldest shots:Camera: Mamiya RB67 Lens: Mamiya-Sekor 3.8/90 Film: Ilford Panchromatic; x-1960s; 6iso Process: HC-110; 1+90; 18minCamera: Argus C3 (1953) Film: Adox KB-21 (expired 1951); 25iso Process: Rodinal 1+50; 14minCamera: Ricoh KR-5 Film: Adox KB-21 (x-1959); 10iso Process: Xtol; Stock; 7minCamera: Argus C3 (1953) Film: Adox KB-21 (expired 1951); 25iso Process: Rodinal 1+50; 14minCamera: Argus C3 (1953) Film: Ilford Pan F (x-12/1960) Process: Rodinal 1+50; 10minLET’S CALL JANET!Suppose you wanted to shoot wetplate collodian, but you didn’t know much about cameras or photography. And then suppose that instead of buying an old ass camera to figure it out, you just built one yourself. That’s Janet. And we had a wonderful conversation with her about camera building, wetplate workshops, the opera (she said that “wetplate collodian is the opera of photography”) and so much more. It really was a delightful interview. THE HISTORY OF EKTACHROMEEktachrome and its process has been around for nearly 75 years. We delved into the subject, talking about each of the various E’s (E-1, E-2, E-6, etc).We used the research of Maurice Fisher and Michael Talburt (here) as the backbone, but fattened it up with various newspaper photography columns that were published as Kodak broke the news of Ektachrome (and the numerous iterations along the way).We even take you through the earliest Ektachrome Process, step by step!PATREON SHOUTOUTS!MichaelLeland BuckBob DeHoffJesseAlan MillsMike CrawfordMatthew StubbsKen BertramshadesJanet Devereaux-GaffneyRyan BarkerLIz PotterMichelle SingletaryRalph BrandiMartín VenturaColin CameronSpace_CritterJaya BhatAlex PurcellOmolsSteve TesterAlex MorrisonMillsMillsAdam RobertsTim AndersonDan TreeOr sachsKate Miller-WilsonJonathan FengJuliet SchwabMichael DaleskollimatornRobert BurtonAbel SilvaKikie WilkinsAlan Joseph MarxDave WalkerJames HuffstutlerJamie MaldonadoNick GaylordAnd this episode, our featured patron is Jamie Maldonado! Hi everybody I’m so thrilled to bring you yet another first – an underwater photographer for episode 99! I was sat reading my copy of the technology/science magazine WIRED and came across some different photos. It was all about reefs and a project involving them with some beautiful photographs by a gentleman called Lorenzo Mittiga. After checking his work I was really impressed and contacted him. Lorenzo was nothing but intriguing and fun to communicate with, he must have been as excited as me Lorenzo’s work is known around the world for his images and works in documentaries, like natural history. By trade, his is a marine biologist but left that in Italy to work more in the field. He’s an intelligent guy who can speak 3 languages and luckily one of them was English. Lorenzo lives on the Dutch island of Bonaire in the Caribbean. He also talks about living and working as a photographer, so its a tale of weddings, portraiture, food, and anything else! Lorenzo talks to us about his start in photography and shooting film, all the way through to digital. He gladly provides details of his kit and how hard it is underwater. He’s got some lovely split over/underwater projects too, which are very different photographically speaking. In this one we talk about: Issues with film underwater Ektachrome & Velvia working with Jack Cousteau working with windsurfers issues with sand camera housings how depth can affect u water & natural filters underwater flash lemon sharks the iguana shot LINKS Aqua lung - http://www.aqualung.com/uk/ Nimar - https://www.nimar.it/en/ Flexarm - https://www.flex-arm.com/en/ Lorenzo website - http://lorenzomittiga.com/ Lorenzo Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/lorenzomittiga/ --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/photography-insights/message

1-54 Forum New York 4-6 May 2018 Archiving Distance Lyle Ashton Harris (Artist) discusses intimacy, collective memory, and photography with Ekow Eshun (Writer and Curator). Harris's archive of 35 mm Ektachrome images registers ephemeral moments and emblematic figures from the late 1980S and early 1990s against a backdrop of seismic shifts in the art world, the emergence of multiculturalism, the second wave of AIDS activism, and incipient globalisation. Harris and Eshun will discuss the archive and other projects in relation to the 'unfinished business' of mourning in the African Diaspora. Image: © Katrina Sorrentino www.1-54.com

FujiFilm has announced the discontinuation of Acros 100. Written on a previous post, we believe that FujiFilm got out of the film game before the resurgence. Because of the filmgrain.es article and connections to FujiFilm in addition to Doc Kaps meeting with FujiFilm execs to save FP-100C, we believe this to be enough evidence to think the machinery is long gone. Street Candy Film We recap Bill's 'One-on-One' interview with Vincent Moschetti. You can listen to the podcast episode here. Kodak T-MAX P3200: My First Roll Steven’s report on shooting P3200. He shares his experience shooting the film and shows us pretty pictures! Kodak Announces Ektachrome E100 in 16mm Let's get it out of the way. There's another pushback on the timeline. It is now slated for late summer/early fall 2018. It's okay though. The gap is getting smaller and smaller it's important that Kodak has a successful launch for Ektachrome. When the article was posted, 35mm was not mentioned and people started to get concerned. We tweeted Matt Stoffel at Kodak and has confirmed that 35mm is on the same timelines as Super 8 and 16mm. https://twitter.com/StoffelMatt/status/982369815443771394 We believe the announcement of 16mm format is the result of a survey Kodak put out about the super 8 camera in early February. Tim Gander After the podcast episode, Tim Gander submitted an article sharing his experience switching to a digital camera and beating his competition to print who were still shooting on film. Read up on the article here and listen to his 'One-on-One' interview with Bill here. Adorama On April 4, 2018, Adorama Learning Center writer, Mason Resnick, posted an article called, “5 reasons why I am never going back to Film Photography.” We posted a Google cache link since all articles by Mr. Resnick have been taken down. The REAL reason why photographers got angry is because it's another "Film vs. Digital" article. We get it, every point Resnick writes is accurate. But everybody has their own reason for shooting film. Things went from bad to worse really quick when photographer, Mike Fraser, discovered the image of a Leica M3 is identical to the image of a Leica M3 on Ken Rockwell's website. Fraser questioned Resnick of the similarities. Resnicks response, "We must have identical Leicas." When that comment did not pass muster, the comment was deleted and ultimately sent the article into viral mode among the photography community. The watermark is in a very difficult spot to crop out. Ken places it where you really have to intentionally remove it. On 4/6 Adorama issues an article titled We Are Sorry in response to the fallout. The article acknowledges the improper use of Ken Rockwell's image and offered compensation. According to PetaPixel the amount is $1,000. Now that Adorama is on the radar, people began to audit Resnick's previous writings and discovered an article posted prior to the Ken Rockwell incident. Images from Bellamy Hunt's article, 'Camera Historica: The Sean Flynn Leica M2' details the story war photojournalist and his Leica M2. The same images in Bellamy's article were used without his approval on Adorama's blog (Google cached link). As a result, all articles written by Resnick have been taken down. MiNT MiNT gives an update on the RF-70. Bring up price and new features – Internal Flash and External flash port – Excited because this really takes instant film to a new level in analog photography. Price – Slightly more expensive than SLR670-S which comes in at $729. Photowalk Website Photographer, Martin Smith, has built a website tailored for photowalks and photo meetups. There are disadvantages to big sites like Meetup.com and Eventbrite that don't always fit the needs of a photowalk. It is quite popular in Europe and we want to help him make this a popular tool for the photo community around the world. Getting an email from Gene Simmons, why young boys must rock, spending fifty thousand dollars on a collection of outtakes, getting onto a cruise ship with really old rock stars, spending $250 on a collection that is basically The Beatles dicking around for 80 hours while being filmed, Ektachrome 500, the miracle of HAP (again), metadata, When The Saints Go Marching In, tediously listing things like some kind of idiot, Beatle harmonies, the Wailers, little record stores in little lake towns, and a few thousand other words or debatable wisdom.
