This week I welcome Keris Marsden onto the show. Keris is a nutritional therapist, personal trainer and yoga teacher and she is probably the person that completely inspired my journey to becoming a nutritional therapist. I invited Keris on to talk about perimenopause after she experienced early menopause in her late 30s and went on a journey of discovery around her health and wellbeing to uncover the best way to manage her symptoms so she could thrive instead of just surviving. In this episode we discuss... What perimenopause is and what else it can be confused for The role of nutrition and lifestyle in improving symptoms of perimenopause and menopause HRT and body identical hormones – and how to know whether you need it The essential health practitioners that can support a healthy menopause The Empowered Menopause Hub - how Keris has taken her experience and knowledge to build the ultimate guide through your menopause This was one of those discussions that could have gone on for 3 hours if we'd been able to! I have admired Keris's practical approach for years and feel so honoured to have finally had a chance to have her on the show. I have had a sneak peek into the Empowered Menopause Hub and it's incredibly comprehensive so if you're ready to learn how to thrive through your menopause, then I highly recommend joining. In this episode of Out of the Clouds, Anne Muhlethaler interviews Keris Masden (@fitterfood), a first of what may be several interviews with the highly qualified naturopathic nutritional therapist, personal trainer and lecturer at the College of Naturophathic Medicine. Keris with her partner Matt Whitmore runs Fitter Food, a comprehensive platform offering good food, optimal health, tools to get fit and active, and leading long and happy lives.Anne invites Keris to share first the why behind her path into personal training, and then into naturopathy. A very personal journey indeed, in large part motivated by a loved one's cancer diagnosis and a chance encounter with a naturopath at an event. Anne and Keris also share their personal experiences in and around burnout, which leads them to discuss the function of breath in gut health and the importance of finding ways to release the stress cycle in our modern (and currently pandemic) environment. Keris then explains how she first got interested in the Paleo diet, how she thinks it can be adapted and how it supports a healthier lifestyle. Herself a keen cook (and a budding chocolatier), she stared creating deliciously nutritious recipes for her clients, which then turned into her first book, 'The Paleo Primer'. She kindly credits her dog Hamish, a Bavarian mountain hound, as her best personal trainer and advisor, himself too a paelo convert. The two finish as always discussing mindfulness tips, the importance of community, favorite books (The Salt Path by Raynor Winn), the best advice Keris received from a friend (watch your gut!) and what brings her happiness. A really wonderful, personal and powerful conversation. Our bodies have a deep rooted connection with our minds. For a lot of us, this concept isn’t an easy one to grasp and it can be difficult to assume that our mental stressors play a factor in chronic pain or physical ailments. Today, I sat down with my good friend and Naturopatic Nutritional Therapist, Keris Marsden. For those of you who have been lucky enough to listen to Keris in person or follow some of her work, this recording is a little different. Instead of educating us around our hormonal health and wellbeing, Keris has spent the last year on her own healing journey. In this episode we chat all things alternative medicine, life during lockdown and what role mental health plays in your overall physical health. As two women in the health and fitness industry, learning how to effectively practice self care and adopt a mindset that benefits our own mental state has been a difficult path. I’m a self proclaimed “recovering perfectionist” and know how hard it can be to break out of those negative thought patterns which carry into our everyday lives. It’s all too common to focus on the lows, as a previous guest, Emma Hackett explained - nearly 80% of our thoughts are negative and habitual. But reflecting on those thoughts and behaviours doesn’t have to be a daunting exercise if we use that information correctly. A lot of the time when something is awry in our bodies, it’s a signal that something needs help in our minds, and learning how to tune into that information is vital. If you’re curious to learn more about these topics, grab a cuppa and join us on episode 22 of Fitness UnFiltered! Some Questions I Ask:What has your personal health journey been like? (3:22)What made you decide to look deeper into the issues going on in your body? (8:37) What did your success with Chinese medicine look like? (14:55)What does your future self look like in terms of adopting positive habits? Episode 97 - Fitter Food Talks Addiction by Matt Whitmore and Keris Marsden
You already have enough to worry and stress about in the lead up to your wedding, so why do we put so much pressure on ourselves to also use our engagement as an excuse to transform our bodies (usually dangerously!) with fad diets and over exercising to achieve that perfection for our wedding day? Dieting for the wedding shouldn't be about conforming because you've heard its what you're meant to do. But still so many of us want to lose weight before the big day, and we had so many requests for a episode about dieting in our facebook group! This week I spoke with Keris Marsden about how to prepare your body for a diet, and follow a lifestyle plan that will help you not only shift the weight you want to lose but also improve your overall health and well being. So say goodbye to dangerous fad diets and take some notes this week! WHAT YOU'LL HEAR Why fad diets can be dangerous for your body in the long term A weight loss timeline (for those of you who do want to lose weight!) Fitting a healthy diet around a busy worklife Why learning about nutrition is important How the food you're eating is the basis to everything! How much exercise you'll need to do (its less than you think!) Why improving your self confidence and body issues is more important than weight loss. Please note: This isn't a lose weight quick episode! And we are in no way saying you should be dieting for your wedding, instead you should be looking to make an informed and educated choice before embarking on any major lifestyle change.
