Surprising Strategies to Help You Fall and Stay Asleep. Hint: They're Not The Usual Stuff | Chu Zhu

I’m so excited to bring you this wonderful interview with Mr. Chu Zhu. He is the founder of a company called Somnus Lab, and they make an amazing mattress cooling sleep system to help you regulate your body temperature during sleep. Chu is a scientifically sophisticated guest who explains some fascinating aspects of circadian rhythm and the hormonal processes governing sleep, including the role of the suprachiasmatic nucleus—the “light control tower” in the brain—and the buildup of adenosine that creates sleep pressure. We talk about why outdoor light is such a powerful signal for your body clock, why indoor lighting doesn't come close to matching it, and how caffeine masks the buildup of adenosine rather than eliminating your need for sleep. We then get into the surprising role of body temperature. You need to cool down to fall asleep, stay cool to stay asleep, and warm up to wake up. Chu explains the surprising reason a warm shower before bed can actually help lower your core temperature, why getting too cold can backfire, and why temperature regulation becomes increasingly challenging as we age. I’ve also been beta testing the Somnus system myself, so we talk about how it can automatically regulate the temperature of your mattress throughout the night, customize each side of the bed, and track sleep without requiring you to wear a device. And if you’re someone who loves your sleep-tracking data, we have an important conversation about why more data isn't necessarily better. This episode will make you think differently about what you're doing to get better sleep: we get into the technology, but also the general behaviors that can help us get things right—including the effects of caffeine and alcohol, how sensitive the body is, and how sometimes we can simply get out of the way. It’s a great reminder that getting better sleep and better health may be less complicated than we think. TIMESTAMPS: Chu discovered some surprising things when he got in to the sleep system technology research. [04:40] Circadian rhythm is very important in regulating how we use sleeping time. [05:49] The hypothalamus is the control center of the brain that receives the light and dark cycles governing our sleep cycles. [07:33] Caffeine is able to take the spot of the brain's receptor that is supposed to take in adensoine to tell you if you are tired. [08:30] If we look at the evolutionary timelline, we see how the sunset and sunrise used to determine our sleep patterns, whereas now we have the lights and screens that don't allow these mechanisms to work naturally. [11:23] Also the access to processed foods and sugars, the empty calories are causing problems nowadays. The difference between direct sunlight and the indoor blue light we are exposed to also makes a big difference. [12:16] Every system in human body has a mechanism to pull it one way and the other way to push it so that you basically have a two-directional regulation system almost in every aspect. [16:35] So the important thing to do in the morning is awaken naturally near sunrise and get some direct esxposure to light, and then know that in the evening is where most of the problems happen. [17:35] Wearing blue screening glasses during the day is completely wrong. [19:16] Body temperature and environmental temperature are very important parts of the ability to fall asleep. [21:23] You need to cool down to fall asleep and you need to stay cool to stay asleep. You need to warm up to wake up. [23:31] Take a warm shower which allows the body temperature to drop and then bed covers or pajamas keep your skin at a comfortable temperature, but it is really important to have the room or the mattress temperature promoting a drop in body temp. [28:13] There are four sleep stages: preparation to sleep, deep sleep, then REM sleep and waking up stage. [32:37] How do you determine whether you're getting these factors dialed in? Is it as simple as waking up and feeling alert and energized? [34:48] The Somnus sleep system is simply a mattress cover like the protective cover you have on your mattress, that is filled with water that creates a cool sleeping environment. [37:27] How does this Somnus monitor your sleep so that you have sleep data? [50:07] LINKS: Brad Kearns.com BradNutrition.com B.rad Whey Protein Superfuel - The Best Protein on The Planet! Brad Talks Testosterone Testing (And Other Important Blood Tests)

The B.rad Podcast

Let’s talk about testosterone testing and other important blood tests you can track for your overall health, wellness, vitality, and longevity. I recorded this show on the occasion of my first visit to the blood lab after signing up for Vitals Vault’s premium program, and I talk about some of my favorite markers while pedaling home from the lab. I focus a lot on testosterone because I believe it’s a great proxy for overall wellness, vitality, recovery, and resilience to stress. I share my own numbers, which have ranged from 562 to 1,004, and explain why I’m so intent on keeping testosterone levels high as I age. I also get into the roughly 1% annual decline in average male testosterone levels since the 1980s, vitamin D and the widespread fear of the sun, why looking beyond LDL can give you a better picture of your lipid panel, and the lifestyle practices that can help optimize testosterone—from sleep and diet to avoiding chronic cardio, lifting heavy things, sprinting once in a while, and even maintaining a winning relationship. TIMESTAMPS: Testosterone testing is the best proxy for your overall state of wellness, vitality, and recovery or resilience to stress. [00:51] Brad checks his testosterone level frequently because it is his way of monitoring the stress impact from his training. [5:41] Triglycerides to HDL ratio is a premier indicator of your heart disease risk factor. It is much better than looking at total LDL cholesterol. [06:42] In 2017 they lowered the ideal level of testosterone due to the widespread decline of testosterone among males around the world. [09:02] If you are not optimizing your sleep, including down and rest time, you cannot reduce your stress. [12:13] Get the junk out of your diet. If you are in that chronic cardio pattern in your exercise, you may be tanking your testosterone. [12:37] If there is arguing and other dysfunctional patterns in your relationship, it will tank your testosterone as well as shorten your lifespan. [13:34] Vitamin D comes from sun exposure more than from your diet or pills. [14:30] LINKS: Brad Kearns.com BradNutrition.com B.rad Whey Protein Superfuel - The Best Protein on The Planet! Is Pursuing "Loungevity" Over Longevity Funny, Or Offensive?

The B.rad Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 18, 2026 62:50

Should we pursue "loungevity" instead of longevity? This is a question posed by prominent sports commentator Colin Cowherd on a recent rant that appeared on Instagram. It was very entertaining, and the intent was to be humorous, but it was also, to me, very offensive at times and brings up this big question that we continue to face: the juggling act of trying to enjoy our lives and not miss out versus trying to make sensible, healthy choices that promote longevity rather than send us into this spiral of accelerated aging and demise that has become the norm. In this episode, I break down Cowherd’s rant point by point, giving him credit where he gets it right while challenging some of the arguments he makes about enjoying life and not worrying so much about health. We get into alcohol, sleep, hydration, processed foods, biohacking, and the constantly changing research on what is and isn’t healthy. I also get into the question of how much control we really have over our health destiny, why your genes are not your destiny, and why four of the five markers of metabolic syndrome can be reversed in a matter of weeks with dietary transformation. Most importantly, I look at some remarkable examples of people who are actually aging powerfully and performing at a high level—from 85-year-old high jumper Kathy Bergen and 101-year-old sprinter Lester Wright to 90-year-old Earl Fee, 61-year-old world-record 400-meter runner Sue McDonald, and my own father, who played championship golf and shot his age more than 1,200 times. These are the people we should be paying attention to when it comes to figuring out how to age well. TIMESTAMPS: Do we have to have a juggling act between trying to enjoy life and staying fit? Many people use rationalizations, excuses and cop-outs along the lines of "Hey, life is short, we might as well enjoy ourselves." [01:08] The United States is now the fattest, sickest population in the history of humanity with over 80% designated as metabolically unhealthy. For waist to height ratio, you want to measure better than 2 to 1. [05:21] There is more of a problem with obesity than there is with starving children in Africa. [08:50] Brad critiques a recent quip from Colin Cowherd. There is a whole group of sports fans who rationalize "what I could have been." You can still do something to keep in the game. [11:51] Does alcohol have any health benefits? [15:33] Many aspects of the biohacking scene have gone a little bit wild, extreme and somewhat inappropriate. [19:52] Are you getting enough hydration when you drink coffee and orange juice? [23:17] Sleep deprivation is one of the biggest public health problems on the planet. [24:24] A processed power bar is very nutrient deficient and health destructive. [27:37] The extreme biohackers are deeply immersed into that lifestyle but it is mostly unreachable for most of us. [31:27] With so many new technological inventions, are we soon going to have some drugs that neutralize the adverse impact of junk food? [35:18] VO2 max is a measurement of the volume of oxygen that you consume per minute per kilogram of body weight while your are exercising. [37:10] The use of anti-aging hormone replacement therapy can override adverse lifestyle practices. [42:16] There are many folks giving advice out there who do not have the experience needed to be telling you what to do. [42:16] Your genes are not your destiny. The genes require lifestyle behaviors in order to be expressed. [51:42] There are four blood markers that can be corrected and reversed out of the disease risk category into healthy category in a matter of weeks of dietary transformation. [57:16] "I wanna live a life that's healthy enough to enjoy and enjoyable enough to be healthy." Is Muscle Power More Important Than Strength For Longevity?

The B.rad Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 11, 2026 31:14

In your 30s, you start to lose a certain percentage of muscle tissue year over year, and that rate really accelerates when you hit 60. But everything we've been told about the importance of maintaining muscle as you age is roughly around half right. Maintaining muscle mass and muscle strength is a key driver of longevity, but even more important is maintaining muscle power and explosiveness. They are not the same. A recent 10-year study of nearly 4,000 adults revealed that those with lower muscle power and explosiveness had a six to seven times higher mortality risk compared to the strongest, most powerful group, while differences in pure strength were insignificant once age and health history were factored in. I explain the difference between sarcopenia and dynapenia, why muscle power is the first thing you lose and you lose it more quickly than anything else, and why we lose our anaerobic conditioning, muscle strength, and power at around 40% per decade, compared to roughly 10% for aerobic conditioning. I also share practical ways to develop and preserve muscle power and explosiveness safely, so you can maintain that important attribute throughout life and avoid the devastating consequences of falls. TIMESTAMPS: Muscle mass and muscle strength are not the same but both are key drivers to longevity. [01:01] Sarcopenia is age-related loss of muscle mass or muscle strength. Dynapenia is the age-related loss of muscle power and explosiveness. [02:25] Training has risen in the level of sophistication where athletes can perform better. [05:16] We have an obligation to hone things like coordination, balance, agility, and timing. [07:22] Dynapenia is defined as the loss of the nervous system's ability to recruit what muscle you still have. [10:10] Muscle mass declines the slowest. Muscle strength declines faster than muscle mass declines. Muscle power declines faster than all the others. [14:29] Falls should be in our central focus as something that is really concerning to us. Overall, there are 14 million aging Americans who fall every year, resulting in three million emergency room visits. [19:20] How do you train for power specifically as opposed to just building your muscular strength? [20:34] All manner of complex kinetic chain acuity starts with your feet. Your feet play a huge role in balance stability, proper movement through the kinetic chain and proper execution. The Three Most Important Workouts For Longevity (That You Probably Aren't Doing!)

Hey, Brad Kearns here with some thoughts from my morning walk about the foundation of any excellent, well-rounded fitness program for peak performance, vitality, fat loss, and longevity. Did you know half of regular runners get an overuse injury every year, and 25% of regular runners are injured at any given time? In this episode, I explain why the modern endurance running approach is deeply flawed, why walking provides an excellent aerobic conditioning effect with minimal impact load or injury risk, and why it should be the foundation from which you launch your more ambitious fitness activities. I also share why resistance training is the missing link for many people, including Dr. Doug McGuff's “Big Five” workout, and why true sprinting—not long HIIT sessions—is the single best workout ever known to mankind in terms of return on investment for reducing excess body fat, promoting overall functional fitness, and supporting longevity. Research reveals that anaerobic muscle fibers decline at a rate of around 40% per decade without intervention, compared to roughly 10% for the aerobic system. That's why we have a critical obligation for longevity to hone the anaerobic system with brief, explosive maximum efforts. The three fitness laws are simple: move frequently at a slow pace, lift heavy things, and sprint once in a while. That is the winning ticket for true fitness, weight loss, and longevity. TIMESTAMPS: Brad emphasizes the importance of walking as an activity from which to launch your more ambitious fitness activities. [01:51] Steady state cardiovascular exercise and other extreme endurance exercises often create injuries. [03:01] Sprinting is the single best workout known to mankind! It's all about quality, explosiveness, power, lots of rest in between. [08:30] LINKS: Brad Kearns.com BradNutrition.com B.rad Whey Protein Superfuel - The Best Protein on The Planet! Manage Your Emotional Response With 4 "Tiny Shifts" | Dr. Elisha Goldstein

What if the emotional patterns you struggle with aren’t actually who you are? What if they’re just patterns—and patterns can be interrupted? I’m joined by Dr. Elisha Goldstein, returning to the show eight years after his first appearance, to talk about his new book, Tiny Shifts: How Emotional Health Transforms Stress, Relationships, and Longevity. I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about healthy eating, exercise, fitness, sleep, and all the things we do to live a long and healthy life, but what about the emotional stuff? Because Elisha makes the case that emotional longevity is just as important as physical longevity—and that living in a high-stress, agitated pattern can potentially take years off your life. We get into his simple 4-R method: recognize, release, refocus, reinforce, which can help you catch yourself in an overwhelmed loop before you spiral into those undesirable, repeatable patterns. We talk about why the skills we learn can easily fail us when we need them the most—when we’re under pressure, agitated, or triggered—and how to create more space between stimulus and response. Elisha explains why emotions are biology, how getting in touch with what’s happening in your body can change the way you respond, and why asking your brain better questions can lead to better answers. We also talk about the everyday moments that can send us into these patterns, from traffic to social media outrage to difficult relationships, and Elisha shares a personal story about getting scammed online that puts all of this to the test in real time. This is a fascinating conversation about emotional health, longevity, and learning to recognize the patterns that drive our behavior so we can interrupt them and give ourselves more choice in the moments when we need it most. TIMESTAMPS: Ben Azadi explains in this podcast some complex scientific insights about sleep, about metabolic health, about how the body's supposed to burn fat while we sleep, about what's going on during the day and how to manage this global obesity epidemic. [01:05] Ben's story of being a very unhealthy depressed young man involves an 80-pound weight loss he experienced. This started his journey toward better health. He will explain the basics of the ketogenic diet. [04:55] If you treat your health casually, you'll end up a casualty. If you are 23 years old or 63 years old, your body will respond when you change the signals you're giving it. [10:10] What does it take to get motivated and inspired to take on the responsibility of managing your own health? [16:31] When you eat too close to bedtime, you're missing out on the most important window within a 24-hour period for fat loss and fat burning. [18:14] If you eat the same meal in the morning and evening with exactly the same calories and micronutrients, the insulin response is different. [22:44] When you are most insulin sensitive in the morning, is that a good time to fast? [28:40] If you put rules and guidelines into your life, that is a really nice method of succeeding. [32:34] Start with whole foods, start with good sleep, start with movement and then build from there. [37:33] Keto Flex is a spin on metabolic flexibility. It's do keto but don't do it forever. [38:22] When you're in ketosis, it signals to your body that you're going through kind of like a famine. It's a stressor to the body. [43:13] How did Ben lose 80 pounds in nine months? You don't lose weight to get healthy, you get healthy to lose weight. [48:54] Are seed oils promoting hyperinsulinemia or are there other things at play here that's interfering with our ability to burn stored body fat? [52:33] The definition of whole food is that it is a single ingredient food. [58:11] What kind of application does the consumption of exogenous ketones have? [58:42] Ben explains his KetoFlex plan here. [01:01:04] Ben shares some of his secrets of managing his busy life, writing books, teaching, podcasting and keeping that 80 pounds off. Could Cacao Be The #1 Superfood Of All-Time?

Welcome to a most informative and inspiring show about the amazing ancient superfood of cacao! This episode will give you everything you need to know about its remarkable health benefits, healing properties, and how to choose the most sustainable, eco-friendly, fair-trade bean-to-bar products. You will learn about the fascinating history of cacao as a sacred food, currency, and medicine, why it remains one of the most highly regarded superfoods on the planet, and how the food industry took this extraordinary raw material, stripped out everything useful, and transformed it into little more than a heavily sugared version of the original. Along the way, I explain the science in plain English—from the powerful polyphenols that support your heart, brain, blood pressure, gut microbiome, metabolism, and mood, to why cacao may be the single most antioxidant-rich food you can eat. I also reveal the disturbing reality behind much of today's commercial chocolate industry, including how mainstream processing destroys many of cacao's most valuable compounds and why ethical sourcing matters. You'll learn the difference between raw cacao powder, cacao nibs, and high-percentage dark chocolate, how to identify truly high-quality bean-to-bar chocolate, why I became a dark chocolate connoisseur, and the artisan brands I recommend. When this episode is over, you're never going to look at a chocolate bar the same way again, and you'll be fully armed to make the best product purchasing decisions and obtain the maximum benefits from consuming foods high in nutritious cacao. TIMESTAMPS: Cacao is one of the most highly regarded superfoods on the planet. [00:56] When you are finished listening to this episode, you will never look at a chocolate bar the same way again. [02:28] The best way to enjoy chocolate is to put it on your tongue and allow the flavor to dissolve in your mouth. [06:38] The history of cacao is fascinating. It is one of the most nutrient dense, biologically active foods in all of human history. [08:10] Early civilationa learned to ferment, roast, and grind cacao beans into a drink. It was more than a flavoring agent, it was very much a spriitual centerpiece as well as used for medicinal purposes. [10:11] After the Europeans added sugar to cacao, it lost some of its medicinal purpose, although it still is a good source of antioxidants. [12:29] There are many cardiovascular benefits from cacao. It improves platelet function. [18:17] Cacao has been shown in studies to produce meaningful reductions in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure. It is also known to help boost levels of HDL (high density lipoproteins.) [20:55] Cacao consumption improves your overall lipid profiles, including helping with healthy triglyceride levels. [27:24] Does cacao help with weight loss goals? [28:27] Cacao has an impact on brain function and mood. [31:37] In contrast to the powerful, hard and fast effects of caffeine, theobromine in cacao works more slowly. It has a gentler mechanism and a longer half life. [35:08] Studies show wonderful benefits from cacao on the gut. It has been identified as a potent prebiotic which is what feed probiotics to flourish in the intestinal tract. [38:59] Reasearch shows cacao has properties protecting you from UV damage from sunburn. [46:35] Just how damaging to health is mainstream modern chocolate processing? One of the terrible aspects of the low-priced chocolate is because of the support of child slave labor harvesting these beans. [50:02] Look for the designation of "bean to bar" on the product. It should also have cacao beans as the first ingredient. [55:05] In mainstream processing of the beans, they have to use super high temperatures which degrades the polyphenol. [57:17] There are three categories of products which can deliver these wonderful health benefits. [01:00:07] When the bar is above 80%, this is where most of the research showing cardiovascular cognitive benefits was conducted. The words "cacao beans" should be the first ingredient on the label. [01:05:53] Brad lists his recommendations for good chocolate bars. [01:19:44] How much chocolate should one consume? [[01:29:06] Do not refrigerate high quality dark chocolate. In this Q&A episode, I answer questions about how to train for varied competitive distances without getting pulled in too many directions, explain my compelling stance on avoiding coffee (and NSAIDs), and give a plug for Dr. Doug McGuff’s “Big 5” total-body workout—a simple, highly effective way to stay strong with just one workout per week. I also share thoughts on how corporations like Whole Foods Market and PF Chang’s continue to sell plenty of crap despite their healthy reputations, discuss the magic of Zone 1 walking for building awesome aerobic fitness, and explain one of the best ways to tell if you’re doing too much strength training. Hint: you shouldn’t be getting sore. These are practical, everyday insights you can use right away to simplify your training, improve your health, and avoid some common mistakes. TIMESTAMPS: Jack, age 60, asks about his running goals. He says he is confused about what Brad says the parameters should be. [01:11] Jack has another question about coffee. Is having that stimulant in the morning helpful for your overall well-being as an athlete? [07:38] Another listener asks: Should I take my high intensity interval training, my strength training like Dr. Doug McGruff's Big Five and a basically walking approach to races? [15:45] Some comments from YouTube include this with Brad's comment: How long should you sprint to achieve all the health benefits? Brad's answer: All your entire life. [17:56] Monica initiates a discussion on the industrial seed oils being used rather than butter in restaurants and even Whole Foods and P.F. Changs. [18:50] Anthony asks about building up aerobic fitness by walking. Brad's response is thatthe aerobic base is built at the lower exercise intensities where your body has sufficient oxygen to develop and fine tune your mitochondrial function [27:00] Chad experiences soreness after trying to complete body weight exercises every other day to failure. Brad answers: If you have recurring soreness from your strength training regimen, you are most certainly overdoing it. [30:48] Dr. Doug McGruff's book, Body by Science, has a great regimen of five big workouts to do once a week. [32:22] Chad is also asking about his schedule for training. You want to have ebbs and flows in your schedule such that you have built in downtime and you always respect the importance of intuition and adjusting on the fly. Today’s episode is a special rebroadcast of one of my all-time favorite conversations on the B.rad Podcast! Every so often, I like to revisit episodes that made a profound impact on me personally and delivered tremendous value to listeners, and this conversation with Thais Gibson is absolutely one of those episodes. I am so pleased to introduce a fantastically awesome show with Thais Gibson, creator of the Personal Development School! When Thais first sent me an overview of what she wanted to discuss, I thought, "Sure, let's talk about it." But I have to tell you, I was completely blown away. This became one of my favorite shows I have ever recorded. Listeners, I truly believe this episode has the potential to be life-changing. I know it was for me. It probably helped that I unknowingly became the guinea pig for much of the conversation. What you'll hear is essentially a live coaching session where Thais demonstrates her expertise and methods using real-life examples from my own experiences—particularly the disconnect between my stated goals and some of my behavior patterns. We focused on the pursuit of wealth and financial security, an area where I occasionally feel frustrated or deficient, perhaps because of subconscious patterns operating beneath the surface. Thais explains the causes of self-sabotage and how to reprogram limiting thought patterns. One of the most fascinating parts of the discussion is when she explains that we're operating from our conscious mind only about three to five percent of the time. If you're someone who listens to podcasts, reads books, and continually educates yourself, your conscious mind may be doing a great job acquiring the knowledge and skills needed to succeed. But your subconscious needs and programming can still interfere and pull you off course. So in this episode, it's time for Brad to get processed, dig deep, and explore what's really happening when self-sabotage kicks in. Thais Gibson is a counselor, bestselling author of Learning Love, and co-founder of the Personal Development School. She holds a Ph.D. and more than 13 certifications in modalities including CBT, NLP, somatic experiencing, Internal Family Systems, shadow work, and hypnosis. After nearly a decade running a successful private practice, she founded The Personal Development School—an online learning platform designed to provide a more accessible and authentic way for people to transform their lives. In fact, after we finished this recording, I enrolled immediately. I encourage you to visit her website and explore what she offers. She offers a test run where you can see what it’s all about—check it out at personaldevelopmentschool.com. Enjoy this special rebroadcast with Thais Gibson! TIMESTAMPS: People may not always be aware that they are self-sabotaging because it usually occurs at a subconscious level. [00:53] Your conscious mind is responsible for roughly 3 to 5 percent of all of your beliefs, thoughts, emotions, and actions or decisions. Your subconscious is responsible for 95 to 97 percent. [04:48] We all have subconscious personality needs. [07:54] Thais uses Brad as an example to unpack what needs it relates to. She asks first, what does he do in his spare time? [09:34] Where does he spend his money? What does he like to learn about? [12:10] Our subconscious mind is also the host of all of our limiting beliefs. [19:46] There is a tool for how to pull up what your limiting beliefs are. [21:42] We're scared of something that's hidden in the periphery at a subconscious level of mind [24:29] Reconditioning is a tool for reprogramming. [26:25] Thais identifies characteristics of people who have been in a relationship with a narcissist. [30:41] Look for the things that trigger you. Plan your limiting belief and use its opposite. [33:02] Step one: What is your core belief and its opposite? Step two: what are 10 memories to support? They can be recent memories, really old memories, doesn't matter. 10 memories to support this new idea about yourself. I am, in fact, good enough. Step three: listen back for 21 days. [34:17] When thinking about financial security, many people struggle with their subconscious as in feeling they don’t deserve it or some parts of society that have a distaste for the inequitable distribution of wealth. [43:10] There are seven areas of life that need attention. Career, financial, mental, emotional, spiritual, physical and relationship. To ignore one area, we will pay for it later. [52:45] What specific things or set of things are you going to do on a daily basis to reprogram? [59:13] So much futile energy and effort toward change without addressing these core issues is going to be tough. [01:06:13] LINKS: Brad Kearns.com BradNutrition.com - 20% OFF Your First Order! What if your doctor has been giving you all the wrong advice about aging, fitness, and longevity? In this eye-opening episode of Health Hacks with Mark L. White, world-renowned athlete and longevity advocate Brad Kearns (former top pro triathlete and author of "Born to Walk") joins the show for a candid conversation on how to actually stay young, fit, and injury-free into your 50s, 60s, and beyond. Prepare for some surprising truths: the "10,000 steps" rule is a marketing myth, focusing just on cardio might actually hold you back, and your pre-workout routine could be the most important training you'll ever do. Key Highlights: Rewriting Athletic Aging: Brad reveals how he successfully transitioned from a world-class endurance triathlete (destroying his body in his 20s) to a thriving masters high jumper and sprinter in his 60s—without chronic pain. Advice For Your Younger (and Older) Self: Why training for your "80-year-old self" beats short-term goals, and the ONE thing most athletes regret. Mobility Over Mileage: The critical role of strength, power, and especially balance in preventing falls—the #1 cause of serious health decline after 65. The Truth About Steps: The hilarious origins of the "10,000 steps" rule, and what research really shows about daily movement and brain health. Nutrition, Social Life & Sleep: Why animal protein and fruit should be your dietary cornerstones, how a bad relationship is worse than smoking for your lifespan, and why your phone is sabotaging your mornings. Put These Lessons Into Action: Start a Simple Morning Mobility Routine: Before reaching for your phone, spend even 5 minutes on basic movements or stretches to build resilience for years to come. Prioritize Strength and Balance Work: Add short, frequent resistance training—even just using stretch bands or stair sprints at home—to protect against injury and falls. Clean Up Your Nutrition: Shift focus to whole foods—think animal-based proteins and fruit—and ditch highly processed snacks for lasting energy and health. Reconnect Socially: Remember, a strong community and healthy relationships add as many years to your life as any fitness regimen. Respect Your Age, Strategically: "60 is the new 60"—don't ignore what your body is telling you; train smarter, not just harder. Follow-Up Challenges: Try a 1-Leg Balance Test: Can you balance 10+ seconds per leg? Practice daily and track your progress. Audit Your Pantry: Toss at least 3 processed foods this week. Technology Fast: Delay checking your phone in the morning until after you move. Don't miss this inspiring, practical episode if you want to break free from aging stereotypes and claim your strongest, healthiest years—no matter your age! Elite athlete and author Brad Kearns discusses a transformative fitness approach as we age, emphasizing walking and gentle exercise over high-intensity workouts. Co-author of 'Born to Walk' with Mark Sisson, he argues that rigorous activities can harm aging bodies, leading to injuries. Kearns highlights the benefits of Zone One cardiovascular efforts, strength training, and the evolutionary reasons for endorphin rushes. Dr. Mindy also stresses the need for aging individuals, particularly women, to embrace activities that align with their changing bodies instead of pursuing intense, potentially harmful fitness goals. The Primal Shift

As a former pro triathlete, Brad Kearns used to push himself to the extremes of human endurance. He competed globally, chasing medals and personal records, only to eventually confront a humbling truth: his intense cardio regimen wasn't building him up — it was slowly breaking his body down. Overtraining left him exhausted, inflamed, and far from the image of optimal health he once envisioned. Today, Kearns sees fitness differently. Rather than pushing endless mileage, he's embraced shorter, more explosive movements like sprinting, jumping and lifting — movements that mimic our ancestral heritage, and that our bodies naturally crave.  In this episode of the Primal Shift podcast, we talk about why modern fitness culture has become hyper-focused on cardio, overlooking the fact that our bodies thrive when exposed to a balanced set of exercises. We also discuss the consequences of pushing too hard, too often, including skyrocketing cortisol, hampered metabolism and staggering injury rates. Kearns' journey highlights the fact that optimal health is about nuance, not extremes. It's about rediscovering a primal approach to movement that energizes rather than exhausts, and heals rather than harms. By shifting away from relentless endurance toward mindful, primal fitness, we reconnect with our evolutionary blueprint, supporting lifelong vitality rather than short-term achievements. The destructive "struggle and suffer" mentality sold by the fitness industry is leading to astonishing injury rates among runners while sabotaging our fat-burning capabilities. Former professional triathlete Brad Kearns challenges conventional exercise wisdom, revealing how the running boom created by cushioned shoes and cultural programming has led countless well-intentioned fitness enthusiasts into patterns of chronic injury, hormonal disruption, and sugar addiction. In his book, Born to Walk, he shares the "fat max heart rate" concept, which explains why gentler movement patterns—particularly walking—may better serve our health and longevity goals than the punishing cardio routines we've been programmed to believe are necessary! In this conversation, Eric Malzone and Brad Kearns discuss the evolution of fitness, the flaws in traditional endurance training, and the importance of a balanced approach to health and fitness. Brad shares his journey from a competitive athlete to an author and emphasizes the need for a sensible approach to fitness that prioritizes longevity over intensity. They explore the addictive nature of high-intensity training and the need for the fitness industry to evolve towards more sustainable practices. In this conversation, Brad Kearns and Eric Malzone explore the nuances of endurance training, the psychology behind workout enjoyment, the critical importance of power production as we age, and how to create a sustainable fitness template for longevity. They emphasize the need for trainers to adapt their methods to ensure effectiveness while addressing client expectations and the often-overlooked aspects of fitness that contribute to long-term health and performance. Takeaways Pursuing peak performance goals is essential at any age. The running culture has many flawed beliefs about endurance training. High-intensity training can lead to addiction-like behaviors. A more boring approach to fitness can lead to better long-term results. Functional fitness is crucial for injury prevention. The fitness industry often complicates programming unnecessarily. We should reflect on the nature of our fitness goals. Endorphin highs can mask underlying issues with training. Sensible fitness programming should prioritize longevity. Coaches need to educate clients on the importance of balance in training. You can broaden clients' horizons by introducing varied workouts. Sprinting can significantly improve body composition over steady-state cardio. Trainers who achieve results will thrive in their profession. Boring workouts can still be effective and engaging with the right approach. Simplifying fitness concepts is essential for the average person. Maintaining explosive power is crucial for longevity and fall prevention. General everyday activity is more important than a strict fitness regimen. Nutrition plays a vital role in optimizing metabolic function. High-intensity efforts can lead to significant fat loss benefits. Creating a supportive community enhances workout enjoyment. https://madabolic.com/  https://goteamup.com/  https://podcastcollective.io/

In this show, I break down and analyze comments from my recent interview with one of the greatest female middle distance runners in the world, the American record holder Shelby Houlihan. It was a pleasure to drive up to Flagstaff, Arizona to meet Shelby at her high altitude training camp as she prepares for her long awaited comeback after a ridiculous four year suspension for a very questionable doping violation. In our interview, which you can listen to here (or click below under "links"), we talked about the tragedy she experienced when she had her career taken from her right in the middle of her prime, right as she was getting ready for the Olympics—then having to sit for four years. You will learn about the nuances of how that whole incident went down and the injustice of the anti-doping system in the world of elite sports. Of course we have to keep these sports clean, but can there be room for some imperfections and some victims too? You will also hear about the many aspects of what it's like to be an elite athlete, how Shelby expanded her horizons and her competitive disposition to try to become a more well-balanced person by getting her master's degree in sports psychology, and much more. Shelby said such amazing, thoughtful comments during the interview, and I think so many of her comments are truly profound insights that will help you as you navigate the very difficult challenge of designing an optimal training program that balances stress and rest (and also keeping your ego in check) as you pursue ambitious competitive goals. These big picture insights are especially helpful now, as the biohacking scene is currently getting a little out of hand—focusing on a regimented, high-tech, glossy, glitzy approach towards pursuing longevity, instead of just covering the basics—and the Blue Zones movement is getting torched by The New York Times’ revelation of the manipulation behind their messaging and how they drew inaccurate conclusions from the data they gathered. It all comes down to basics and consistency, so this show will highlight important insights about Shelby’s approach, from details of her weekly training patterns to how she is deliberate about what she does to unwind and rest during the off competitive season, and how she generally balances the physiological impact training has on her body. Welcome to this special episode of the B.rad podcast, where Brad Kearns visits American record holding middle distance runner Shelby Houlihan at her high-altitude training camp in Flagstaff, AZ. This is an incredibly powerful and in-depth discussion about all aspects of what it's like to compete in elite level sport. Shelby has just completed her four-year layoff from a highly unjust and controversial doping suspension and is returning to competition as the 2025 US and world indoor season approaches. This wide-ranging discussion is a master class on developing the ideal perspective and mindset of a champion athlete. Shelby has been through hell like few other athletes - her livelihood and status in elite sport taken away in an instant with the four-year suspension. Please watch our first interview where we discuss the details of her doping violation and her legal case and the incredible injustice and lack of due process that athletes face if they test positive. We recap it a bit in this show, and You’ll learn about the nuanced dynamics of doping in high level sports., how the system works, and how we might do things better and more fairly. You learn about how a champion athlete has to cultivate a singular focus and narrow mindset but how this can lead to disappointment and frustration when you attach too much of your self esteem to results. its double edge sword but we talk about the sweet spot where you can still be a vicious competitor but also a well-balanced person. You learn about how Shelby spent her off time still training at a high level, doing some incredible time trials, getting a masters in sports psych, and making a great effort to broaden her perspective about life and sport. You learn about the business of T&F, a somewhat unpleasant topic when you realize how even the greatest athletes have very tenuous career prospects. This is a woman who has dedicated her life to elite sport and it was an honor to see such amazing resilience and maturity as she tells her incredible story. You don't have to be a track fan to deeply appreciate this interview. Please listen to the entire riveting two hours as we get the lowdown from someone who is about to go wild on the track and get some more records and titles. TIMESTAMPS: Shelby Houlihan has quite a story to tell about her experience with the anti-doping system. [02:02] After her four-year suspension, Shelby is looking forward to coming back into competition, although she is feeling frustrated. [05:15] For her comeback she still doesn’t want to use super spikes. She wants to run fast naturally not faster because of her shoes. [08:20] There are people, the haters, that don’t believe Shelby’s story. [14:06] Track and Field journalism field is rather small. Have they treated Shelby fairly? [18:09] Even when disqualified, Shelby ran because it was her identity. [20:57] Teaching sports psychology is a good place for her with all her experience. [25:52] A lot of athletes have a hard time with retirement….trying to figure out who they are without competition. [29:57] Has Shelby been able to cheer her friends on even though she, herself, isn’t running? [32:43] The biggest problem with elite athletes is over-training. [38:20] There are many injured athletes that return to competition too soon. If you rush it, you’re going to pay later. [54:48] Upon Shelby’s suspension, she lost her sponsors. [57:53] Unfortunately, some other elite athletes were not supportive of Shelby. Most athletes don’t understand what happens with the testing system. [01:02:11] Many athletes are doping and fans like to watch the sports. [01:08:51] How is Shelby going to handle the comeback? She hopes it will still be fun. [01:12:35] How will the crowd receive her? [01:16:24] How did she handle the fact that she knew she was clean, but had accept the suspension? [01:18:58] How is the team environment with her comeback? [01:22:01] Why are shoe sponsors so important over other products? [01:31:24] The Beer Mile World Championship was a fun challenge. [01:31:41] How much importance does she put on breaking her records? How does aging effect the athlete? [01:42:54] What does Shelby’s training week look like? Brad Kearns: The Benefits Of Foot Functionality, Minimalist Shoes, And A Barefoot Inspired Lifestyle

The B.rad Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 14, 2025 42:39

I want to talk about the benefits of Peluva, five toe minimalist shoes, and a barefoot inspired lifestyle overall. A commercial recording, perhaps, but we are committed to promoting foot functionality and overcoming this disastrous slide into foot atrophy and dysfunction—that is the essence of a modern lifestyle and a life lived in elevated, restrictive shoes. If we’re going to talk about ancestral health and getting back to basics, eating the right food, getting your sunshine and getting your exercise, we also have to look after our feet. When we encase them in restrictive shoes, we develop lifelong bad habits, dysfunction, weakness, and atrophy—no wonder we have these ridiculous statistics, such as the 78% of Americans who complain of chronic foot pain. “Solutions” to their chronic foot pain range from orthotics to prescription medication to surgery. And did you know that Medicare covers only two pairs of shoes per year for elderly Americans that are in the Medicare system? Isn’t that kind of ridiculous? Of all the things that your standardized, nationalized healthcare policy should cover, they threw in a couple pairs of orthopedic shoes because everyone, of course, is going to experience foot problems and foot pain. But there is a way to escape from this disastrous decline, and that is to rebuild your foot functionality very carefully by transitioning over to a more barefoot inspired lifestyle. In this episode, I share how to get started, why you want to go barefoot as much as possible (and how do it safely!), why your big toe must be allowed to operate independently from the other toes and in multiple planes of motion, why a truly barefoot style shoe must have a zero drop sole, what experts have deemed as the single most destructive feature in the modern shoe, and much more! TIMESTAMPS: What happens to your feet in the modern day restrictive padded athletic shoe? [00:56] You need to rebuild your foot functionality very carefully. [02:21] You must have the articulated five toes. [03:16] It is very important how and where your heel hits the ground in the middle of your stride. [04:34] The Peluva shoe that was designed for basically everyday use has 9 millimeters of protective cushioning. [12:39] Just moving in everyday life is the number one fitness objective. [14:43] Ground feel of the shoe means that with every foot strike, the neurons in your feet send a message to your central system. [20:06] If you took off your shoes now and started running on a hard surface, you would probably exhibit the most graceful midfoot landing. [25:52] The best part of wearing the Peluva shoes is that your feet achieve their full range of motion and functionality. [27:57] The big toe initiating the takeoff portion of the stride is the key trigger for glute activation in the body. [32:32] The big toe needs to operate independently through multiple planes of motion.
