Elite athlete and author Brad Kearns discusses a transformative fitness approach as we age, emphasizing walking and gentle exercise over high-intensity workouts. Co-author of 'Born to Walk' with Mark Sisson, he argues that rigorous activities can harm aging bodies, leading to injuries. Kearns highlights the benefits of Zone One cardiovascular efforts, strength training, and the evolutionary reasons for endorphin rushes. Dr. Mindy also stresses the need for aging individuals, particularly women, to embrace activities that align with their changing bodies instead of pursuing intense, potentially harmful fitness goals. As a former pro triathlete, Brad Kearns used to push himself to the extremes of human endurance. He competed globally, chasing medals and personal records, only to eventually confront a humbling truth: his intense cardio regimen wasn't building him up — it was slowly breaking his body down. Overtraining left him exhausted, inflamed, and far from the image of optimal health he once envisioned. Today, Kearns sees fitness differently. Rather than pushing endless mileage, he's embraced shorter, more explosive movements like sprinting, jumping and lifting — movements that mimic our ancestral heritage, and that our bodies naturally crave. In this episode of the Primal Shift podcast, we talk about why modern fitness culture has become hyper-focused on cardio, overlooking the fact that our bodies thrive when exposed to a balanced set of exercises. We also discuss the consequences of pushing too hard, too often, including skyrocketing cortisol, hampered metabolism and staggering injury rates. Kearns' journey highlights the fact that optimal health is about nuance, not extremes. It's about rediscovering a primal approach to movement that energizes rather than exhausts, and heals rather than harms. By shifting away from relentless endurance toward mindful, primal fitness, we reconnect with our evolutionary blueprint, supporting lifelong vitality rather than short-term achievements. Your body might be fighting against you when you push too hard in exercise, activating powerful compensatory mechanisms that can undermine your goals. In this eye-opening episode, we cover the critical "compensation theory of exercise" that reveals why high-intensity workouts often lead to less overall activity and compromised metabolic health. Brad Kearns, co-author of Born to Walk, makes a compelling case for walking as not merely another exercise option but a fundamental human necessity—as essential as sleep—supporting everything from brain health to hormonal balance. The destructive "struggle and suffer" mentality sold by the fitness industry is leading to astonishing injury rates among runners while sabotaging our fat-burning capabilities. Former professional triathlete Brad Kearns challenges conventional exercise wisdom, revealing how the running boom created by cushioned shoes and cultural programming has led countless well-intentioned fitness enthusiasts into patterns of chronic injury, hormonal disruption, and sugar addiction. In his book, Born to Walk, he shares the "fat max heart rate" concept, which explains why gentler movement patterns—particularly walking—may better serve our health and longevity goals than the punishing cardio routines we've been programmed to believe are necessary! In this conversation, Eric Malzone and Brad Kearns discuss the evolution of fitness, the flaws in traditional endurance training, and the importance of a balanced approach to health and fitness. Brad shares his journey from a competitive athlete to an author and emphasizes the need for a sensible approach to fitness that prioritizes longevity over intensity. They explore the addictive nature of high-intensity training and the need for the fitness industry to evolve towards more sustainable practices. In this conversation, Brad Kearns and Eric Malzone explore the nuances of endurance training, the psychology behind workout enjoyment, the critical importance of power production as we age, and how to create a sustainable fitness template for longevity. They emphasize the need for trainers to adapt their methods to ensure effectiveness while addressing client expectations and the often-overlooked aspects of fitness that contribute to long-term health and performance. Takeaways Pursuing peak performance goals is essential at any age. The running culture has many flawed beliefs about endurance training. High-intensity training can lead to addiction-like behaviors. A more boring approach to fitness can lead to better long-term results. Functional fitness is crucial for injury prevention. The fitness industry often complicates programming unnecessarily. We should reflect on the nature of our fitness goals. Endorphin highs can mask underlying issues with training. Sensible fitness programming should prioritize longevity. Coaches need to educate clients on the importance of balance in training. You can broaden clients' horizons by introducing varied workouts. Sprinting can significantly improve body composition over steady-state cardio. Trainers who achieve results will thrive in their profession. Boring workouts can still be effective and engaging with the right approach. Simplifying fitness concepts is essential for the average person. Maintaining explosive power is crucial for longevity and fall prevention. General everyday activity is more important than a strict fitness regimen. Nutrition plays a vital role in optimizing metabolic function. High-intensity efforts can lead to significant fat loss benefits. Creating a supportive community enhances workout enjoyment. https://madabolic.com/ https://goteamup.com/ https://podcastcollective.io/
In this show, I break down and analyze comments from my recent interview with one of the greatest female middle distance runners in the world, the American record holder Shelby Houlihan. It was a pleasure to drive up to Flagstaff, Arizona to meet Shelby at her high altitude training camp as she prepares for her long awaited comeback after a ridiculous four year suspension for a very questionable doping violation. In our interview, which you can listen to here (or click below under "links"), we talked about the tragedy she experienced when she had her career taken from her right in the middle of her prime, right as she was getting ready for the Olympics—then having to sit for four years. You will learn about the nuances of how that whole incident went down and the injustice of the anti-doping system in the world of elite sports. Of course we have to keep these sports clean, but can there be room for some imperfections and some victims too? You will also hear about the many aspects of what it's like to be an elite athlete, how Shelby expanded her horizons and her competitive disposition to try to become a more well-balanced person by getting her master's degree in sports psychology, and much more. Shelby said such amazing, thoughtful comments during the interview, and I think so many of her comments are truly profound insights that will help you as you navigate the very difficult challenge of designing an optimal training program that balances stress and rest (and also keeping your ego in check) as you pursue ambitious competitive goals. These big picture insights are especially helpful now, as the biohacking scene is currently getting a little out of hand—focusing on a regimented, high-tech, glossy, glitzy approach towards pursuing longevity, instead of just covering the basics—and the Blue Zones movement is getting torched by The New York Times’ revelation of the manipulation behind their messaging and how they drew inaccurate conclusions from the data they gathered. It all comes down to basics and consistency, so this show will highlight important insights about Shelby’s approach, from details of her weekly training patterns to how she is deliberate about what she does to unwind and rest during the off competitive season, and how she generally balances the physiological impact training has on her body. Welcome to this special episode of the B.rad podcast, where Brad Kearns visits American record holding middle distance runner Shelby Houlihan at her high-altitude training camp in Flagstaff, AZ. This is an incredibly powerful and in-depth discussion about all aspects of what it's like to compete in elite level sport. Shelby has just completed her four-year layoff from a highly unjust and controversial doping suspension and is returning to competition as the 2025 US and world indoor season approaches. This wide-ranging discussion is a master class on developing the ideal perspective and mindset of a champion athlete. Shelby has been through hell like few other athletes - her livelihood and status in elite sport taken away in an instant with the four-year suspension. Please watch our first interview where we discuss the details of her doping violation and her legal case and the incredible injustice and lack of due process that athletes face if they test positive. We recap it a bit in this show, and You’ll learn about the nuanced dynamics of doping in high level sports., how the system works, and how we might do things better and more fairly. You learn about how a champion athlete has to cultivate a singular focus and narrow mindset but how this can lead to disappointment and frustration when you attach too much of your self esteem to results. its double edge sword but we talk about the sweet spot where you can still be a vicious competitor but also a well-balanced person. You learn about how Shelby spent her off time still training at a high level, doing some incredible time trials, getting a masters in sports psych, and making a great effort to broaden her perspective about life and sport. You learn about the business of T&F, a somewhat unpleasant topic when you realize how even the greatest athletes have very tenuous career prospects. This is a woman who has dedicated her life to elite sport and it was an honor to see such amazing resilience and maturity as she tells her incredible story. You don't have to be a track fan to deeply appreciate this interview. Please listen to the entire riveting two hours as we get the lowdown from someone who is about to go wild on the track and get some more records and titles. TIMESTAMPS: Shelby Houlihan has quite a story to tell about her experience with the anti-doping system. [02:02] After her four-year suspension, Shelby is looking forward to coming back into competition, although she is feeling frustrated. [05:15] For her comeback she still doesn’t want to use super spikes. She wants to run fast naturally not faster because of her shoes. [08:20] There are people, the haters, that don’t believe Shelby’s story. [14:06] Track and Field journalism field is rather small. Have they treated Shelby fairly? [18:09] Even when disqualified, Shelby ran because it was her identity. [20:57] Teaching sports psychology is a good place for her with all her experience. [25:52] A lot of athletes have a hard time with retirement….trying to figure out who they are without competition. [29:57] Has Shelby been able to cheer her friends on even though she, herself, isn’t running? [32:43] The biggest problem with elite athletes is over-training. [38:20] There are many injured athletes that return to competition too soon. If you rush it, you’re going to pay later. [54:48] Upon Shelby’s suspension, she lost her sponsors. [57:53] Unfortunately, some other elite athletes were not supportive of Shelby. Most athletes don’t understand what happens with the testing system. [01:02:11] Many athletes are doping and fans like to watch the sports. [01:08:51] How is Shelby going to handle the comeback? She hopes it will still be fun. [01:12:35] How will the crowd receive her? [01:16:24] How did she handle the fact that she knew she was clean, but had accept the suspension? [01:18:58] How is the team environment with her comeback? [01:22:01] Why are shoe sponsors so important over other products? [01:31:24] The Beer Mile World Championship was a fun challenge. [01:31:41] How much importance does she put on breaking her records? How does aging effect the athlete? [01:42:54] What does Shelby’s training week look like? I want to talk about the benefits of Peluva, five toe minimalist shoes, and a barefoot inspired lifestyle overall. A commercial recording, perhaps, but we are committed to promoting foot functionality and overcoming this disastrous slide into foot atrophy and dysfunction—that is the essence of a modern lifestyle and a life lived in elevated, restrictive shoes. If we’re going to talk about ancestral health and getting back to basics, eating the right food, getting your sunshine and getting your exercise, we also have to look after our feet. When we encase them in restrictive shoes, we develop lifelong bad habits, dysfunction, weakness, and atrophy—no wonder we have these ridiculous statistics, such as the 78% of Americans who complain of chronic foot pain. “Solutions” to their chronic foot pain range from orthotics to prescription medication to surgery. And did you know that Medicare covers only two pairs of shoes per year for elderly Americans that are in the Medicare system? Isn’t that kind of ridiculous? Of all the things that your standardized, nationalized healthcare policy should cover, they threw in a couple pairs of orthopedic shoes because everyone, of course, is going to experience foot problems and foot pain. But there is a way to escape from this disastrous decline, and that is to rebuild your foot functionality very carefully by transitioning over to a more barefoot inspired lifestyle. In this episode, I share how to get started, why you want to go barefoot as much as possible (and how do it safely!), why your big toe must be allowed to operate independently from the other toes and in multiple planes of motion, why a truly barefoot style shoe must have a zero drop sole, what experts have deemed as the single most destructive feature in the modern shoe, and much more! TIMESTAMPS: What happens to your feet in the modern day restrictive padded athletic shoe? [00:56] You need to rebuild your foot functionality very carefully. [02:21] You must have the articulated five toes. [03:16] It is very important how and where your heel hits the ground in the middle of your stride. [04:34] The Peluva shoe that was designed for basically everyday use has 9 millimeters of protective cushioning. [12:39] Just moving in everyday life is the number one fitness objective. [14:43] Ground feel of the shoe means that with every foot strike, the neurons in your feet send a message to your central system. [20:06] If you took off your shoes now and started running on a hard surface, you would probably exhibit the most graceful midfoot landing. [25:52] The best part of wearing the Peluva shoes is that your feet achieve their full range of motion and functionality. [27:57] The big toe initiating the takeoff portion of the stride is the key trigger for glute activation in the body. [32:32] The big toe needs to operate independently through multiple planes of motion. Walking is not only a fundamental human activity, but a cornerstone for improving health and longevity as discussed in this conversation with Brad Kearns, co-author of Born to Walk: The Broken Promises of the Running Boom and How to Slow Down and Get Healthy One Step at a Time. This new book challenges the long-held belief that we were all born to run, arguing instead that walking is a far less stressful and more beneficial form of exercise. In this episode, Rip is also joined by his co-producer, Carrie Barrett - an avid endurance runner and triathlete. They discuss: How walking is often overlooked but is a powerful catalyst for health and longevity. Why many people mistakenly believe running is essential for fitness, but walking can be more beneficial. How the running boom has led to increased injuries, especially among recreational runners. Why so-called 'supershoes' are reall a marketing gimmick A significant number of runners get injured each year, even more than NFL players. How improving aerobic conditioning through walking can help avoid the risks associated with running. How to determine your "Fat Max" heart rate level of training Slowing down your workouts to maximize health benefits and promote sustainable fitnessLaying out a fitness plan that centers primarily on walking, but also includes a sprint intervalsThis episode and book challenges the long-held belief that we were all 'born to run,' arguing instead that walking is a far less stressful and more beneficial form of exercise. And, as you lay out your fitness goals for 2025, we hope you're inspired to take that first step toward a healthier lifestyle—one step and one walk at a time.Episode WebpageUpcoming Events:Join us for our 2025 Plantstrong Retreat in Sedona - April 6-11, 2025: https://plantstrong.com/pages/sedona-retreat Join us for our 2025 Plantstrong Retreat in Black Mountain, NC - Nov 9-14, 2025: https://plantstrong.com/pages/black-mountain-retreat COMPLEMENT: Use code PLANTSTRONG for 30% off at https://lovecomplement.com/pages/plantstrong-special-offer Let Us Help Your PLANTSTRONG JourneyUse Code: BF30 for $30 off Annual Subscription at https://home.mealplanner.plantstrong.com/ Leave Us a Voicemail QuestionLeave us a voicemail: https://www.speakpipe.com/plantstrong Follow PLANTSTRONG and Rip Esselstynhttps://plantstrongfoods.com/ https://www.facebook.com/GoPlantstrong https://www.instagram.com/goplantstrong/https://www.instagram.com/ripesselstyn/ Follow the PLANTSTRONG Podcast and Give the Show a 5-star RatingApple PodcastsSpotify

Today, dietary experts agree on one thing—that protein is the #1 dietary priority to survive (and thrive). Yes, humans need carbs to fuel an energetic life and natural, nutritious fats for hormone and cellular health, but protein is the #1 dietary priority—and this episode will explain why. You will learn exactly why we need sufficient dietary protein and why many people fall short of this goal, why restrictive diets (like fasting, keto, or being plant-based) put you at an automatic disadvantage, why getting enough protein can be a challenge and how to overcome that challenge, and the differences in bioavailability for different proteins—such as beans and rice vs. steak, hamburger, eggs, and the #1 supplement whey (which is vastly superior to unhealthy plant proteins). We also talk about the 9 essential (and 11 non-essential) amino acids and the reason why the essential ones must come from your diet. You will learn about the “Leucine threshold” to trigger muscle protein synthesis, the optimal times to consume protein and how much to eat, and why protein is an integral part of achieving long-term weight loss. I also explain what crash diets that feature low amounts of protein do to your body and metabolism and why the goal is to be in an anabolic or metabolic state, and not a catabolic state. As you will hear, the most important thing is to simply try to raise awareness of where you fall in terms of protein intake, and then prioritize! This dietary strategy will keep you away from indulgent foods and lower nutrient density foods. For a quick, easy protein boost, get a bag of B.rad Whey + Creatine Superfuel on Amazon or BradNutrition.com and stir into a glass of water. TIMESTAMPS: Protein in the dietary centerpiece. We don’t need to meet our target perfectly every day as long as we make it up. [01:00] Many people are believed to be falling short these days on optimal protein consumption because of the popularity of so-called restrictive diets. [03:00] It is difficult to optimize protein because there are not a lot of quick on-the-go snack foods that are high in protein. [05:00] We have to be concerned about the amino acids and getting leucine. [07:00] Sarcopenia is the age-related muscle loss from lack of protein. [11:00] Eating whey is a good way to supplement your need for protein. [12:00] What is the recommendation for sufficient protein intake? Consume one gram per pound of your ideal body weight. [17:00] What is the protein content of an egg? There are 6 grams of protein in the whites whereas the yolk is rich with fat and other nutrients that are difficult to get from other areas of the diet. [22:00] If you are habitually under consuming protein, you will soon develop a disease. Rebroadcast: Don't let the title of this show make you think this episode is mainly for male listeners: you will learn a lot about sexual function and libido that is relevant for women as well. I've really been diving deep into research as I work on writing my new book about testosterone function and delaying the aging process, and I have already discovered so many compelling insights that I'll be sharing some of them with you today. You will learn what it is about visceral fat that makes it so harmful to the body, and also why it becomes a slippery slope that is hard to escape once you add a little bit of this kind of fat to your body. Did you know belly fat is actually classified as an endocrine organ of its own because of the inflammatory chemicals it secretes? This also puts your system in a constant state of inflammation, which inhibits testosterone production and a whole host of other issues relating to metabolic health. And, this all leads to even more belly fat accumulation! And when you have too much belly fat, any testosterone your body is making (or receiving through supplementation) will actually be converted into estrogen. You'll also learn about the connection between working out too much and libido levels and the importance of napping. Training yourself to unplug and actually shut your brain down is such an important practice to commit to making daily. Remember the goal is not to fall asleep but to rest and check out. If you have trouble falling asleep or feeling really rested, use a blindfold to help your body relax, and your mind will follow. I also share the Taoist theory that posits that (for males) orgasms deplete your essential life force and the importance of preserving them. The idea is to have sex frequently, but not ejaculate frequently. But interestingly, Taoists believe frequent orgasms have the opposite effect on females! Read The Tao of Health, Sex, and Longevity: A Modern Practical Guide to the Ancient Way for more info. My previous episodes with Dr. Wendy Walsh (click here for the first and here for the second) are also a great resource to check out on this topic. TIMESTAMPS: Both women and men, let's talk about testosterone libido and sexual health. Is there something we can do besides taking medications? [01:49] The first and foremost symptom of trouble is the spare tire. Belly fat is inflammatory and puts you in a state of chronic or systemic inflammation. [04:15] Surprisingly libido and testosterone do not have a direct relationship that we've always assumed. [08:09] Teach yourself how to relax, and then you will optimize your sexual health. [09:36] Taoism believes women should have as many orgasms as possible. This is the opposite for the male. [14:46] There are three energy sources: Qi, Shen, and Jing. [15:36] It is a much different story for females in the society of thousands of years ago. [16:32] It takes about 72 hours for sperm and seminal fluid to regenerate. [19:24] In modern society, the female is in a different role and can easily deplete her hormone balance. [21:41] The Taoists want males to withhold their orgasms frequently. [22:28] Science differs from the Taoist theory. Many studies talk about frequency of once a week as being the maximum. [27:44] Pornography is a real problem leading people to believe they are having real sex and interfering with their hormone stabilization. [29:12] Testosterone is not directly connected to libido. [30:59] We must get that life stress and balance and give yourself a fighting chance at being a good lover here with your partner. Develop a sense of humor. [33:26] Supplements: A lot of these products are actually targeting libido rather than testosterone. [38:34] The topic of testosterone replacement therapy has produced some highly disturbing statistics. Look at lifestyle changes first. Should we consider slowing down to Zone 1 for most of our training? Returning guest and Brad Kearns, co-author of Born to Walk: The Broken Promises of the Running Boom, and How to Slow Down and Get Healthy--One Step at a Time, and long-time advocate for rethinking training principles. Building on our previous conversation with Mark Sisson, Brad explores the misunderstood world of aerobic conditioning. We discuss what elite athletes like Eliud Kipchoge are getting right—and what most recreational runners are missing—by focusing on slow, low-intensity efforts. Brad challenges the hype around Zone 2 training and shares insights on polarized training, resilience, and the surprising value of walking. Brad highlights the importance of building an aerobic base, using zone one training to prevent injuries, and balancing high-intensity workouts with sustainable practices. He also discusses how outdoor adventure sports can foster a deeper connection to nature and improve overall health. With insights into training philosophy and the value of recovery, this episode offers actionable advice for runners of all levels. I'm so pleased to introduce another show with my main man, Mark Sisson, especially on the occasion of yet another book launch of the exciting new title, Born to Walk! We can't wait to release this book to the world and promote the heck out of it, but this episode is a nice comprehensive overview of the content in the book as we try to stick to covering things chapter by chapter. You will hear about the intriguing presentation—it's really a two part book where part one details the broken promises and the unintended consequences of the running broom and how running is quite likely unhealthy for the vast majority of participants, while part two is embracing the Born to Walk lifestyle. You will hear about the comprehensive benefits of aerobic conditioning and building a base the correct way, the genetics of walking and the human imperative to walk for optimal health, foot functionality, and how to embark upon a full-body functional fitness program that is rooted in general everyday movement as a foundation, but also requires you to engage in the primal approach of strength training, brief intense resistance, exercise, occasional all out sprints, and of course, playtime. One question I hear a lot is: “What's it like to write a book? What's the process like?” and in this show, I answer that question, sharing details of my writing process, the things I've learned from years of working on books, and my advice to people who want to write a book. TIMESTAMPS: Brad's advice is if you want to write a book you need to just start typing. [01:57] Part one of the book covers broken promises of the running boom, weight loss, calorie burning, padded shoes, and chronic cardio. [04:44] Part two is more positive, telling about the benefits of building an aerobic base and the benefits of walking in barefoot shoes. Let's talk about longevity and how the science can sometimes be BS. A listener recently shared a prominent news story with me that suggests that humanity is hitting the upper limit of life expectancy and that people will top out at a maximum age of around 87, 90 for women and 84 for men. To quote the lead study author, S.J. .Olshansky, professor of epidemiology and biostatistics at University of Illinois, Chicago: “We're basically suggesting that as long as we live now is about as long as we're going to live, we're squeezing less and less life out of these life-extending technologies.” In this episode, I talk about why this is a great example of how science can be stupid, inapplicable, misinterpreted and misapplied. There are highly competent researchers doing great, important work, with likely highly reliable results, but we also know that this is not always the case. In the case of the Blue Zones, principal researchers admittedly took their liberties with the information about eating habits in order to advance their plant-based agenda. The ways that research relating to exercise physiology can often deliver distorted conclusions because of factors like the nature of the subjects, the duration of the study, and the failure to control confounding variables is something I've discussed on the show before, and while I agree that we're not magically going to live longer because of amazing new drugs, a far more interesting discussion to me is how we are ruining our natural human lifespan potential in modern times. My personal view on this is that almost everyone has the potential to sail smoothly to 100, taking advantage of modern medical intervention when necessary, but mainly by simply not getting in our own way (and this even includes people that have been dealt a bad hand with genetics such as a family propensity for obesity, heart disease, cancer, and so forth). In this episode, I talk about some ways to not become a statistic and how to actualize your human potential by getting out of your way and doing some cool stuff too, and why the main emphasis must always be on health span, not lifespan. TIMESTAMPS: According to a recent article advances in medical technology and genetic research are not translating into lifespan overall. Are we really at a plateau? [00:51] The problem with these studies is that the scientists are looking at a population that is leading a very unhealthy lifestyle in general. [06:57] In any scientific study, there are many variables so one always needs to view the results accordingly. [11:08] You may have familial genes for predisposition for things like obesity, heart disease, cancer and so forth, but you need environmental influences to trigger those diseases. [12:07] Can we do anything to defy those statistics about how long we are going to live? [17:05] Sleep, rest, relaxation, recovery, and downtime are critically important. [21:45] Circadian rhythm is a number one concern, according to Dr. Kruse. Minimize the light in your home after dark. [23:47] Clean up your act. You cannot focus on longevity if you have crap in your life. This includes toxic relationships. [34:58] Look at your behavior patterns. Be positive. Envision your happy healthy life because you are taking control of your diet and exercise for sailing into the long future. [40:22] The media programs us to believe something that gets us to limit our thinking. [43:49] When you focus on plant-based eating, for whatever reason, it is high risk unless you also get nutrient-dense foods. We need protein. [46:35] Walking is the single most essential requirement for your health and longevity. Move frequently and take breaks from your work. [49:57] Sprinting added to your daily routine is very valuable. [59:56] Digital technology has played havoc on our social connections. Don't put health and longevity on the back burner. Care about it! 01:05:42] Beware of how consumerism is luring you with its profit-based goal of making money. [01:11:38] Set simple doable goals. This is an important show to help you be the best you can be throughout life, instead of following the typical path of accelerated aging and hormone decline driven by adverse lifestyle practices. Besides doing regular blood tests for male sex hormone panels, there is an obvious scoreboard to monitor in the form of visceral fat. Fighting the spare tire battle is the essence of aging gracefully, as visceral fat accumulation begets the accumulation of more fat and suppressed hormones. The tips outlined in this episode are simple, doable, sustainable and inexpensive—I will cover fitness (emphasizing sprinting and lower body strength training), diet (emphasizing protein and ditching processed foods), some talk about supplements, healthy romantic relationship dynamics, and a bit of proven biohacking such as red light therapy and therapeutic cold exposure. TIMESTAMPS: How about some lifestyle tips for natural testosterone optimization? [00:54] When you want to think about hormone optimization, look first at sprinting. [04:18] You have to watch out for a pattern of overly stressful workouts. [07:29] The proper way to sprint is to give a near maximum effort of 92 to 95% and also take good recovery period. [09:27] Brad talks about how he does his own sprint workouts. A six to one ratio recovery to work interval is the goal. [14:19] Strength training involves emphasis on correct form, precise technique, and keeping your core stabilized. [21:09] Monitor your testosterone level for your overall level of energy, vitality and anti-aging longevity status. [31:19] When looking at your diet, the foremost objective is to consume sufficient protein. [34:27] Vegans and vegetarians need to be very careful in your efforts to consume sufficient protein. [36:35] People who engage in intermittent fasting need to be concerned about getting sufficient protein. [39:52] As we age, our protein synthesis diminishes our ability to digest and assimilate and use protein as the building blocks for muscle and all other organs. [41:47] There have always been arguments about the macronutrients, fat and carbohydrate, but the bottom line if you eliminate the nutrient deficient foods, you are on the right track. [42:52] A spare tire is a sign of serious health disturbance. [46:48] Whey protein, and creatine are the very best, cleanest, freshest natural sources of protein. [51:17] There are many supplements that claim to boost your energy, strength, build muscle and increase libido. [57:56] There are hormonal underpinnings that influence relationship dynamics. [59:45] Red light therapy can also boost your testosterone production. [01:04:08] There are some things to avoid that tank your testosterone. Stay away from plastics. [01:06:50] A sedentary lifestyle promotes chronic inflammation. Keep moving. If you want some career advice, this is the episode for you! While the topic of this show will be particularly relevant for younger listeners, listeners of all ages can relate to struggling with maintaining a positive attitude and hopeful prospects about the future. This episode was inspired by a young friend of mine who has just finished schooling and is looking to embark on a career, but feeling stressed about the opportunities, challenges, financial stresses-loans—the usual suspects. A relatable issue for most people, and more than ever these days as the younger generation faces much difficulty with landing jobs and other challenging external issues (such as the rising cost of living in urban areas and housing prices). It can be immensely challenging to find time to even enjoy your free time when you have a life burden like this hanging over your head, and when is it going to change? Not likely anytime soon, so in this episode, I offer three pieces of advice I shared with my friend for acting most effectively during challenging times and for accomplishing your career goals. You will learn how to “be like a machine,” what it means to pursue your inspired purpose, the one question to ask yourself any time you experience anxiety, stress, or fear, my thoughts on asking others for help, and more advice to help you navigate your pursuit of your goals. TIMESTAMPS: It is difficult these days for young people to find their way in a career path. [00:49] It is hard to maintain a positive attitude and focus at this time in your young life. You have to be like a machine. [02:50] Learn to deal with setbacks and misfortunes that will come your way and keep going. Pursue your inspired purpose. [10:16] Look at your progress as stepping stones. [15:22] Sometimes your inspired purpose does not bring financial success. [20:58] Ask yourself what should I be doing right now? When you experience fear and anxiety, redirect your focus to your values. [28:05] If you tend to carry around your worries, fears and anxieties, instead of enjoying your life, realize that this is a game you play with yourself so you can save face. [32:42] Reach out for help in a polite and considerate way and make sure you have something to offer. A listener asked me about what I think about the resets…..fasting, keto, carbs, hormetic stressors, and vegan propaganda.. My knee-jerk reply was that we all need to step back and focus on the big picture. It's also important to never get frustrated, and to work hard to stay open minded and think critically instead of succumbing to the marketing hype and the controversy and confusion in the health game. It might be a great strategy to focus on self-experimentation. Be willing to experiment, measure results, and evaluate for future modification and refinement. I get into some of the Blue Zones talking points that can be described as propaganda and flat-out unsubstantiated (plant-based promotes longevity!), versus the most valuable takeaways for happiness and longevity (move more!) If you hear anyone spouting maxims like this, turn and run screaming in the opposite direction: "A cup of beans a day could add two to three years to your life.” Here's an awesome Blue Zones insight: "They're driven by life's meaning and purpose. They're investing in family, keeping their minds engaged and there's no existential stress of being worthless in life like so many Americans." Enjoy the show and check in with me at podcast@bradventures.com TIMESTAMPS: There is much controversy and confusion in the progressive health scene about how to pursue longevity. [00:48] It takes a concerted effort to maintain our open-mindedness and our ability to think critically. [02:44] Human life expectancy has fluctuated in the early years and now, with all the medical improvements, it has gone up, however, the USA is not rated very highly compared to other countries. [07:49] When in doubt, do self-experimentation rather than relying on some information that is out there like the Blue Zone. The plant-based diet has been attacked by people in the know. [12:05] A good goal is you should have around one gram of protein per pound of your ideal body weight. [19:58] What about fasting, time-restricted feeding and calories restriction in pursuit of longevity? [21:49] Brad is pretty sure he does not want to take any prescription medication unless absolutely necessary. He wants his body to work naturally. My recent focus sprinting and high jumping in masters track & field competition entails a completely different approach to training than the endurance protocol and endurance mindset. My former podcast guest Cynthia Monteleone (@fastover40 on Instagram) has been a big help recently for me to continue to evolve my approach and my mindset so I can thrive in track & field. In short, I've been applying endurance training principles to my high intensity peak performance goals and it's been hampering my performance and recovery. This is where you have to make the crucial shift in mindset to prioritize high intensity training. I reached out to Cynthia for more guidance because I'm getting annoyed at my frequent minor injuries that linger for too long. Immediately it became clear that I'm unwittingly trying to train disparate energy systems and it's too much for my body to handle. In this show, I'll describe how I'm evolving from "easy/recovery" days in the endurance paradigm to proper rest days for a sprinter/jumper. Remember, the aerobic system responds well to low intensity, consistency and volume. The anaerobic system responds well to high intensity, short duration, extensive rest, and low volume. I've also learned in recent years that the more specific and lofty your goals become, the more you have to narrow your focus. I can't pursue the disparate goals of Speedgolf and sprinting/jumping. Listen to my great show with Cynthia to learn more about her innovative approach and services at Mam808.org This show will also inspire you to perhaps shift from an excessive emphasis on cardio/endurance training in favor of doing high intensity exercise and enjoying the best benefits for fat loss and longevity. TIMESTAMPS: Brad is taking days off. It's a new approach to his training. He's found he doesn't take enough rest and recovery days. [00:54] We see most fitness enthusiasts are way heavily weighted to the cardio side and usually highly deficient on the explosive high intensity side. [05:41] Around 50% of regular runners are injured every year from a flawed approach that is characterized by running at a pace that is too strenuous. [09:10] You are encouraged to do harder, shorter duration but really explosive workouts. My friend sent me a recent DEXA scan report and was distraught about his body composition score. This is a lifelong athlete—excuse me—super-athlete, who has performed at the highest level in his sport for decades. After being sidelined by surgery, and perhaps some less scrutinized dietary choices, he drifted outside his familiar performance zone into the softy zone. If we all consistently deployed our vast knowledge to our lifestyle habits, we would all be kicking ass all the time. That's not so easy, so we are often compelled to try and correct course. Sometimes, driven, focused, highly competitive types will get the urge to take desperate measures: “That's it! It's time for exhaustive workouts and prolonged fasting!” It's also becoming a popular theme where “calorie deficit” is the end-all. This insight might be true in a vacuum, but we have to think about real-life variables, such as hormone optimization (especially for women), lifestyle factors including access to nutritious foods, psychological issues relating to food, the difficulty is accurately counting calories burned, the difficulty in accurately assessing what your body does with ingested calories, and so forth. If you want to lose excess body fat, know that while it is a complex challenge, it is actually completely possible to accomplish if you follow a sensible approach. In this episode, you will hear the five tips I suggested to my friend to get things headed in the right direction. If you or someone you know wants to lose weight, this show will put you on the right track and help you lose excess body fat in a healthy way. Did you know that defensiveness not only causes a cortisol spike, but also releases the powerful enzyme aromatase, and that has an effect on testosterone? In this show, we're hearing some more reflections from John Gray—one of my favorite podcast guests ever who always brings the most profound insights—about how to avoid breaking up and instead, reconnect with your partner. You will learn the most common causes that lead to breakups, why marriage statistics are not reliable, what to do when your partner is not happy, and why sexual desire is our strongest drive and of top importance in our relationship. You will also hear great, effective tips for making communication easier with your partner, like how John advises women to “express everything as a preference” since most men just want to be your hero, and as John explains, we have to realize that we are most vulnerable with people we are closest to and most humans don't like criticism in general. You will also learn what phrase is usually the man's signal to cease the talking (which, if it continues, will cause the man to get defensive—and this poses problems as it causes a cortisol spike which releases aromatase, and this causes testosterone to convert to estrogen!). If you are single or in a relationship, you don't want to miss this show—you will learn so much that will positively affect your relationships, like why you should never try to change the other person, and why you should never make continued requests or demands, why John says to never speak when you have a negative emotional charge (as a man, but this is good advice for all), and more! TIMESTAMPS: Some of the major causes of relationship breakups are suppressed emotions and communication problems. [00:49] Keep yourself happy. Do not depend on your partner to make you happy. [03:39] Ideally, the man wants to feel like the hero, the guy who can come through for the partner and family. [04:55] It works better when women express things as a preference and compliment your partner for doing things. [08:53] It is man's basic nature to solve problems so if you just want him to listen, you need to say that. [09:47] If a man says, “I hear you,” that is the signal for the woman to stop talking. [10:45] Don't try to change the other person. Many women are unaware of how controlling they are. [15:33] Men: never speak with a negative emotional charge and learn how to make a graceful exit. [19:51] Men can take the time away to reflect on their contribution and see what triggers there are. [21:41] Learn to validate the women's challenges. [29:46] What techniques can the male learn to deal with emotional disturbances or relationship conflict? Number one: live your life so you don't have to say “I'm sorry” so often. [30:43] You don't have to get defensive, men. Execute the desired behavior. It doesn't mean you are caving in. [32:32] You must understand relationships as a 80-20 proposition. [36:52] The number one most attractive thing a partner can do is watching your partner excel from a distance. [39:39] Remind yourself there are times when it's not your problem to solve, but you can be supportive. [41:00] Sex spikes testosterone. Welcome back to Brad's Olympic Track & Field wrap up! I hope you enjoyed the lengthy presentation summarizing the men's events, and now it's time for a show dedicated to the awesome performances of the females on the track and the field for the Paris 2024 Olympics. In the first show, I gave you a little bit of an overview about my fascination with Olympic Track & Field and I also mentioned something I talk about more in this episode, which is how great it is to see a sport where the males and females are equally represented in the categories of stardom and coverage—unlike some other sports that tend to exist in the shadow of the men's games (like basketball). If you want to hear a comprehensive review of this year's Olympic Women's Track & Field Competition, this is the episode for you. I saw my friend the other day, asked “How are you doing?” and he said: “I'm trying to be a better parent.” What a cool answer! The quip alone speaks volumes about his desire to do the best he can, and his self-awareness as he makes his best effort to raise toddlers. We ended up having a whole conversation about parenting as he began self-reflecting and spoke about patterns from his own childhood, his desire to avoid undesirable ones and model favorable ones, and how his peers kept him in check with great effectiveness. I told him I'd email him my all-time favorite parenting article, “The Power (and Peril) of Praising Your Kids: How Not to Talk To Your Kids”, and share my favorite insights about parenting young ones, as my kids are now 26 and 24, and this conversation ended up being the inspiration for today's episode. It doesn't matter how old your kids are—there are great takeaways for all parents in this show (as well as prospective parents) about things like overparenting and the importance of observing cultural norms and perhaps choosing to do things your way, instead of merely following others, while still acknowledging that some circumstances require a very delicate balance (like “helping” your kids with their homework or college admission essays). I also discuss the idea that we actually have less influence than we think on our kids destiny, why it is more effective to praise the effort they make, rather than the results they receive, and the importance of realizing that while we do have a distinct ability to screw our kids up, their positives and successes will largely be self-directed. TIMESTAMPS: To learn how to parent, we look at what we learned in our own childhood….what was good and what was not so good. [00:56] It seems like kids are over-parented these days. [03:54] These days if a kid gets a B in high school, their chances of being accepted at university are slim. [07:06] Commercials during the Olympics showed different attitudes from parents regarding sports. Never give up on finding what you love. [08:56] Parents have way less influence than we think on our kids' destiny. [12:54] Give the kids opportunities and then stand back. [15:45] You do not really need to praise results. You praise effort toward improvement. [20:25] Be like your kid's traffic cop. [27:11] The kids can possibly be involved in the decision-making regarding rules and consequences. If you are in the habit of fasting until noon or are having a 16-8 eating pattern, that puts you at risk.. This show is about second guessing fasting—something I've been talking about extensively for the last few years on this podcast, sharing the revised strategy I have been following: putting fasting aside in favor of striving for maximum nutrient density in my diet and maximum cellular energy status at all times with my new mantra for the future, for longevity, and for peak performance: perform, recover, perform, and recover. Because I want all of my stress capacity and energy going into athletic performance, my fitness regimen, and recovery as best as I possibly can, that means going for nutrition rather than tapping into the many strategies and techniques that can be categorized as restrictive dieting (keto, low-fat, carnivore, vegan, etc). Yes, fasting has been touted for many amazing health benefits and the body works most efficiently in a fasted state, but in this show, I explain why I decided to rethink fasting and revise my approach to my daily diet, and the results I have experienced from this change.
