André Anderson on aspirational play, upward spirals and how the world belongs to the people who tell stories

Play Episode Listen Later May 8, 2025 89:55

In this episode of Out of the Clouds, host Anne Mühlethaler interviews André Anderson, an author, educator, and the founder of Freedom and Balance art college. Anne first encountered Andre during his impactful TEDx talk at Hackney Empire in London and was immediately drawn to his innovative approach to storytelling.André tells Anne about his journey from a creative child who loved making imagery, writing stories and dreaming of his own media empire to becoming a self-published author and community storyteller. He explains how his first book "Ultra" — written in just 12 days on his Blackberry — opened unexpected doors and taught him the principle that "the more you create, the freer you become."Their conversation also explores André's groundbreaking project "Authors of the Estate," for which he transformed his Northwest London council estate into a publishing house. Andre explains how this initiative challenged negative narratives about his community by empowering residents to author their own stories. He likens this work to the tradition of oral historians in West Africa (called griot), highlighting how storytelling serves as both cultural preservation and a political act. André also mentions "Chalk Hill," the second book that followed "Authors of the Estate" in his publishing journey.Anne and André discuss the etymology of words like "author" and "education," as André explains how understanding their roots has shaped his approach to creativity and teaching. André also explains how his art college, Freedom and Balance, creates environments for people to discover their unique creative language through play. He shares his realization that facilitation is about asking powerful questions rather than providing all the answers, describing his role memorably: "I am Gandalf, and all of my tools, or all of my magic, is tools of play."Anne and André delve into the importance of aspirational play for adults in an increasingly AI-driven world, with André suggesting that play might be the most distinctly human activity that cannot be replaced by technology. They examine how imperfection, vulnerability and the willingness to make mistakes can become powerful educational tools and discuss André's project "Love Letters for My Peoples," which uses love as a framework for creativity and connection.Throughout the conversation, André shares his philosophy of "heart work" — creative work that incorporates strands of one's authentic self — and reflects on the importance of process over product. André even makes a compelling comparison between his "Authors of the Estate" project and Nas's seminal album "Illmatic," referring to it as his defining work that fans always want to hear again. The episode concludes with André's thoughtful responses to Anne's closing lightning round questions, revealing his deep connection to creativity, his appreciation for his mother's early support of his creative pursuits and his belief that happiness comes from knowing the world has heard you.A profound conversation about reclaiming narratives, finding freedom through creativity and the transformative power of play. Happy listening!About André AndersonFreedom & Balance is an Art College for the artist in everyone. Francesca Hogi on how to find true love, dating with intention and the fairytale industrial complex

In this episode of Out of the Clouds, host Anne Mühlethaler interviews Francesca Hogi, a TED speaker, host of the Dear Franny Podcast, and internationally recognized expert on dating and relationships. She's been featured in media outlets such as The Today Show, Marie Claire, The New York Times, Harper's Bazaar and The Huffington Post, and is the founder of The True Love Society, a community for people seeking deeper self and romantic love.Anne and Francesca's conversation begins with Francesca sharing her life story, revealing how she was a deeply romantic child who devoured her older sister's romance novels, foreshadowing her future career path. She was working as a corporate lawyer when she began her journey toward love coaching by blogging about dating. She then turned to matchmaking for several years before finding her true calling as a love coach.Francesca tells Anne about her holistic approach to helping people find love. She also discusses some elements of her book, How to Find True Love: Unlock Your Romantic Flow and Create Lasting Relationships, in which she breaks down four key components for readers to establish the foundations for a true love relationship: mindset, heartset, soulset, and skillset. Francesca challenges the conventional hierarchies of love, explaining how we tend to put romantic love up on this pedestal, thinking of it as the pinnacle and then assuming failure if we don't find it in our lives. Instead, she advocates for adapting our intentions to have love through all parts of our lives. Then Anne and Francesca delve into the realities of modern dating, particularly the evolution and impact of dating apps. Francesca pointedly reminds listeners that "swiping on a dating app is not dating — going on dates is dating," and emphasises the importance of "developing the skills — because it is all skill — to be able to meet people more organically as they live their lives."Francesca explains what she asks her clients (and readers of her book) to develop more self-awareness, like: "What do I actually believe about myself when it comes to love?" and "In the love story of your life, what is the role that you play?" She highlights how many people hold beliefs about themselves and their romantic possibilities that are not truly in alignment with what they want, and these questions guide us back to our focus.Their conversation turns to exploring the deeper spiritual dimensions of finding love through what Francesca calls one's soulset: considering faith and connection to a higher power. She adds that serendipity, for example, is something that you can court intentionally, and how practicing gratitude makes you more aligned with love. She offers that having that soul-level connection and understanding our romantic energy is essential because while often we understand mind, emotion, and action, we tend to misunderstand energy. To conclude, Anne asks her favourite questions, which has Francesca share her grounding practices, in particular her daily morning and evening journaling sessions, and her love of walking in any weather. A warm, insightful, and empowering conversation that challenges conventional wisdom about modern love and offers a refreshing perspective on how to center love in all aspects of life. Happy listening!Selected links from episodeOut of the Clouds website: https://outoftheclouds.com/Out of the Clouds on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/_outofthecloudsThe Mettā View website: https://avm.consulting/metta-viewAnne on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/annvi/Anne on Threads: https://www.threads.net/@annviAnne on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/anne-v-muhlethaler/Find more about Francesca at FrancescaHogi.comHer book, "How to Find True Love: Unlock Your Romantic Flow and Create Lasting Relationships"How to date with intention, Francesca's online courseFrancesca's True Love Society on Patreon  Find Francesca on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dearfrannyOn LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dearfrannyOn Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DearFrannyFollow Francesca's podcast Dear Franny on Instagram Or subscribe to the podcast on Apple Podcasts Selected links from episode:The princess industrial complex The Love Inside, a book by Jessica Faith GrahamU2 I still haven't found what I'm looking for The book  The Untethered Soul by Michael Singer This episode is brought to you by Le TrenteAre you a purpose-driven individual seeking clarity in your personal narrative? Sari Azout on the art of patience, building a Sublime internet, and the future of creativity

In this episode of Out of the Clouds host Anne Mühlethaler explores the evolution of digital spaces with Sari Azout, founder of Sublime, a personal knowledge management tool for creatives. Born in Barranquilla, Colombia — the magical hometown of Shakira and Gabriel García Márquez — Sari describes herself as a cerebral child who found her intellectual home first at Brown University, where she developed a "fiercely independent mindset" and discovered the joy of the library as a social space. With remarkable foresight( Sari "could always see around corners") she strategically planned her path to remain in the U.S. as an international student and got into banking, ultimately landing at Barclays during the 2008 financial crisis. This experience taught her valuable lessons about the importance of connecting work to meaningful impact.Next the pair discuss Sari's project, Sublime. Sari articulates her vision as both practical and philosophical, calling it "the personal knowledge management tool of my dreams." She explains that in a world where "intelligence is being commoditized," what remains valuable are "conviction, point of view, courage, intention — the artist's way." This connects to her writing practice, which has revealed that "ideas never come to me before I write. They always come to me in the process of writing."Their conversation delves into Sublime's three core promises: never lose a valuable idea, never be uninspired, and transform from passive consumption to active creation. Sari emphasizes wanting to "facilitate helping people make things, not just consume things," noting that "being a consumer is just a state of helplessness." Drawing inspiration from books and Marshall McLuhan's quote that "the medium is the message," she envisions a "sublime internet" that moves away from quantifiable metrics toward meaningful engagement.Sari also speaks candidly about the tension between selfishness and selflessness in entrepreneurship, and her "willingness to be misunderstood for a longer period." She shares her vision of transitioning from the attention economy to the intention economy, reframing digital tools as something "people use instead of products people consume."The episode concludes with Sari sharing her perspective on happiness and describing her version of "paradise on earth" as working all day alone in anticipation of an evening in great company. This interview with Sari is a fascinating exploration of how we might build more intentional, meaningful digital spaces that serve our creativity rather than just our consumption. She weaves Dr. Guralnik's work on political polarization - how early experiences of "splitting" the world into all-good or all-bad persist into adulthood - with Buddhist teachings that offer a pathway forward through radical acceptance. From confronting her own "inner dictator" to embracing ancient wisdom about sitting with difficult emotions, Anne invites listeners to consider: What if the key to healing our divided world begins with acknowledging the complexity within ourselves?Selected links from episode: The opinion piece by Rebecca Shaw in the GuardianThe guest essay in the New York Times by Dr Orna Guralnik Wealth extremismTara Brach's article about inviting Mara to teaThe Metta View This episode is brought to you by AVM Consulting Struggling to connect with your audience? This is a guided Mettā meditation, also known as Loving Kindness, dedicated towards our mentors.Anne V Mühlethaler, coach and certified mindfulness meditation teacher,Anne starts the session by inviting us to bring an intention to mind, for clarity. Then she invites us to bring to mind a being, a person who has inspired us in some way — whether they were an official or more of an undercover mentor — who lit our path and helped us in some way. In this practice, we consider the qualities of our mentor that we want to emulate, to nurture. Then we hold this person in our mind's eye and we repeat phrases of well-wishes. We sendLoving Kindness with gratitude directed toward this first mentor, and then toward a second. Anne closes the practice by inviting us to imagine our caring mentors sending us the same well wishes of Loving Kindness. In an energetic gratitude loop of metta, Anne invites us to direct Loving Kindness to ourselves, ending with our own mentor wish:“May I too become a beacon, radiating guidance and inspiration.  May I too be a mentor, illuminating the  path for those in need of clarity and direction, whether I support them in their personal life or in their career.”  This episode is brought to you by AVM Consulting Struggling to connect with your audience? In this episode of Out of the Clouds, host Anne Mühlethaler explores the transformative world of Kundalini yoga with accomplished yoga teacher Kia Miller. In addition to Kundalini, Kia also teaches meditation, breathwork, and Vinyasa yoga. In their conversation, Anne and Kia dive right into Kia's meditation, grounding and breathwork practices, before Kia recounts how she has blended her beloved Ashtanga Vinyasa with Kundalini tradition to form the unique Radiant Body Yoga school. With an emphasis on the power of breathwork and energy coherence, Kia shares how she evolved to discover these practices and how they harmonise the energies of heart and mind, ultimately offering a balanced approach to managing the stresses of modern life. Kia's journey reveals the profound impact that yoga can have on building self-trust and presence.Kia opens to Anne about her personal evolution from an athlete that was disconnected from deeper self-awareness to a yoga teacher who embodies authenticity and presence. She discusses how Kundalini yoga ignited a spark within her, leading to a newfound intimacy with herself and a conscious way of living. Kia found inspiration and support through her teachers Guru Singh — whom she calls a wayseer — and Guru Chan. Kia explains how she found a path to connect genuinely with the present moment, shedding her old skin metaphorically, and became the teacher she is today.Kia talks in depth about the spiritual awakening that is facilitated by Kundalini yoga in focusing energy at the pineal gland. Kia likens the pineal body to a radio receiver that, through dynamic movement, breathwork and meditation, can release powerful chemicals, facilitating deeper spiritual experiences. Kia tells Anne how Kundalini kriyas (a specific sequence of physical actions that work toward a particular outcome) help shift awareness from a "me-centric" to a "we-centric" consciousness, enhancing interconnectedness and making infinite potential accessible.Grounding practices are another focal point of the conversation, with Kia emphasising to Anne the importance of breathwork, core kriyas and energetic field practices for maintaining energy and stability. She shares her secret superpower of deep empathy and highlights how food, nature walks, and connection contribute to radiance and happiness. The episode concludes with Anne and Kia making reflections on the essence of happiness found within connection, reinforcing the idea that true happiness lies within.A compelling discussion about self-discovery, finding the source of inner power, and our interconnectedness, with a devoted yogini and accomplished teacher. Anne V Muhlethaler interviews Ana Maria Sierra, a market development and strategic communication consultant living in Colombia. She is a Fulbright Scholar with a master's degree in mass media from the New School for Social Research in New York. Following a 15-year corporate career in business management and leading senior management teams in Colombian and multinational banking and service companies, Ana founded Sierra Restrepo Consultores in 2009, a consultancy specialising in marketing and strategic communication. From an early education in the arts, then media before going into banking, Ana Maria has built a robust career and has worked with clients across Latin America in the coffee sector. In their conversation, Ana tells Anne about her journey with MODA ELAN, the conscious and ethical jewellery platform she founded that aims to be the bridge that brings together the best ethical jewellery designers from around the world with the jewellery masters and gold panners from the biogeographical Chocó territories in the Pacific Coasts of Colombia. Ana shares how she became motivated by her love for handcrafted jewellery after taking a silversmithing course in Bogota, which led her to transition from a successful career in promoting coffee consumption in Colombia to pursuing her passion for silversmithing and artisanal metallurgy and eventually founding Moda Elan. Through this B2B platform she hopes to support local artisans and promote ethical jewellery practices.Leveraging her consultancy firm, Ana explains how she began to sell her jewellery as pop-up shops and fairs, gradually incorporating contemporary urban jewellers into her portfolio. Her deep involvement with the Alliance for Responsible Mining opened her eyes to the importance of responsibly sourced minerals and single-origin gold, which became a cornerstone of her ethical jewellery brand. She became passionate about the powerful pre-Hispanic metallurgy legacy she discovered, which led her to choose to promote work rooted in the history of the Americas, with its unique aesthetics, materials — and, through the jewellery, bring those values to the world. Ana's passion is evident as she tells Anne how she is committed to work with the Afro goldsmith communities of the Chocó Biogeographical Region while adding sustainability to their cultural heritage around goldsmithing.Ana's work is characterised by a strong commitment to social impact, particularly in supporting vulnerable communities like women miners and the Afro-Colombian artisan jewellers of this region. She talks about the impact of unlicensed mining and emphasises the need for transparency in the jewellery supply chain, advocating for ethical sourcing and fair trade practices.Looking ahead, Ana offers her vision for Moda Elan, which would be to expand its reach and bring more awareness and support for ethical jewellery, reaching the wider ethical luxury market and leveraging the stories and values behind each piece to spark meaningful conversations with the view to drive sustainable change. She acknowledges the challenges she faces, such as managing rural associations and competing with large gold traders, but remains determined to overcome them. To illustrate that point, Ana jokes that this project is like “a jumbo jet with a blender motor.”Ana's journey is a testament to the power of shared values and the potential for creating positive impact through dedication and collaboration. Arthur Gourounlian (@gourounlian) is an Armenian-born professional dancer, choreographer and television personality, and most recently one of the three judges on Dancing with the Stars Ireland.Arthur has performed and toured with some of the most beloved performers of recent time, from Bananarama to Beyoncé, Pink to Kylie Minogue, and many more. After a successful career as a dancer, he went on to take a leading role in casting, coaching, movement directing and choreographing music videos, world tours, media campaigns, and trade/fashion shows for Christian Louboutin, Diesel, Puma, Jean-Paul Gaultier among others. He has also appeared on television and movies, fashion shows, and advertising campaigns himself, and performed in Britain's Got Talent, Celebrity X Factor, the Brit Awards and The Royal Variety Show.Arthur and Anne met in 2010 when she was working for Christian Louboutin. They collaborated on a project for online platform Fashionair, when Arthur trained Christian for his first and only dance performance, which culminated in a viral video that saw the famous shoe designer tap dance his way in a dream sequence on a London stage. In this conversation, Arthur shares with Anne his harrowing journey from Armenia to Belgium as a refugee with his family, escaping the war when he was just twelve years old. Then how, while their refugee status was still being decided, his family was rocked by the death of his father. Shortly after, young Arthur left for Brussels to try his hand at hairdressing, only to find himself being picked out of the crowd and selected as a dancer. From there, Arthur discusses his many surprises and successes, how he went from Milan to London, and made his mark on the dance scene as a performer before turning to choreography and creative direction. Arthur dreamt of making it big, an homage to his father, and moving away from the refugee status he carried as an adolescent. The successful and charismatic personality is also the other half of one of Ireland's most beloved celebrity couples, as he is married to Big Brother alumni/star Brian Dowling. The two of them recently welcomed their first child into the world, Blake Maria Rose, and Arthur shares the ups and downs that have led to this most joyous moment. Arthur's story is quite unlike any other. As Anne reflects to him, it's epic enough to be hinting at Joseph Campbell's hero's journey. A sparkling, touching and deeply positive interview with someone who will certainly light up your day. In this episode of Out of the Clouds, host Anne Muhlethaler interviews celebrity fitness trainer and former ballerina Julie Granger. Anne came across Julie via an online recommendation and was immediately struck not only by the instructor's passion for teaching and the effectiveness of her classes (particularly Brooklyn Barre), but also by the combination of her warmth and dry sense of humour. In this interview, they dig into Julie's journey from the outskirts of Paris to the Boston Ballet, why she left her ballerina career behind, and how she decided to pursue new callings, including yoga, fitness and entrepreneurship. Currently based between Paris and Lisbon, Julie explains how she is ‘three-quarters teacher', and why she is not teaching by default but as a choice since it's something she truly loves. Having opened her first studio the week before the first COVID lockdown in 2020, the ex-ballerina opens up on the difficulties she faced then and how grateful she is to have been able to continue to lead her community of students (her ‘Squad,' as she calls them) virtually.  Anne and Julie discuss the competitive culture of celebrity trainers in New York and the benefits of discipline and passion. Julie also shares how she wants to offer her students not just the benefits of a toned and energised body but for them to have a great time while engaging with fitness, as well as how she hopes to make the benefits of ballet available to all. Finally, Julie covers how she's learned to be kinder to herself, as we often are our own harshest critics, and why kindness is what matters most. A passionate, wise, and spirited interview. In this one-of-a-kind episode, host of the Out of the Clouds podcast, Anne V Mühlethaler, is the ‘guest,' this time being interviewed by her friend, podcast host and journalist Etain Lavelle. Anne shares in her introduction that Etain is like extended family to her. They became friends in their twenties and shared a flat on London's Gloucester Road for a few years. Etain was the best person to interview Anne for this special episode. In this conversation, Etain dives into Anne's life journey, asking about her childhood memories and her unconventional education. Anne explains how she found herself settling into a retail career at Christian Louboutin, which was then a small label, after abandoning her pursuit at a music career. She also recounts the outset of what ended up as a seventeen-year stint at the now global shoe brand. Later, Anne talks about the vision behind her coaching, consulting and storytelling practice and the genesis of her podcast Out of the Clouds, before talking about why being consistent in communication is just as essential as choosing the right platforms for a brand. The two discuss successes and lessons learned from difficulties at home during Anne's teenage years. From getting a scholarship to working at the junior company and briefly joining the main company, Annie found a calling in what she refers to as authentic self-movement and in teaching at the Martha Graham Center. An introvert, she shares with Anne how yoga became an essential part of her life, thanks to Integral yoga (Swami Satchidananda's school) which felt like a refuge from the competitiveness of the dance world.Annie explains how after a trip to LA and a conversation with her teacher Maty Ezraty, she impulsively relocated to the West Coast and turned to teaching yoga full time, training at Yoga Works under Maty and Lisa Walford. They go on to talk about teaching, about Annie's movement principles and energy, how to create inspiration for students, and why Annie founded her own yoga school, Smart Flow Yoga. Annie also shares why continuing to evolve is essential, as well as learning to let go of preconceived notions. She explains how she has learnt to tap into her students' expectations rather than relying on her own. Now based in Northern California, the teacher, who turned 65 this year, also talks about the stages of life, or ashrams, and she is learning to ‘retire' whatever is not supportive in her practice. Quoting Noam Chomsky, she says: "If you are teaching today what you were teaching five years ago, either your field is dead, or you are.” Annie also reveals  her passion for bird-watching, her mindfulness and pranayama practices, and how learning to be still was the doorway to her meditation practice. Finally, she answers the most delicate and profound question of all, one that Annie regularly asks her students: who is Annie? A joyous, profoundly thoughtful and inspiring interview. Lisa Bragg on the importance of being seen and heard and the art of bragging with purpose

Play Episode Listen Later May 12, 2024 92:48

There are serendipitous moments in life, particularly when two women who are equally passionate about storytelling and connection end up on a podcast together. In this episode, Anne Muhlethaler, coach, consultant and host of Out of the Clouds, interviews author, advisor and your hype-woman Lisa Bragg. Lisa tells Anne her story, starting by sharing her journey from TV news reporter to launching her business, MediaFace, pioneering what we now know as content for our digital world, before offering thoughts on the challenges posed by growing up with Bragg as a last name. Anne asks Lisa about the genesis for her book, Bragging Rights, as well as how she designed the proprietary research underpinning her argument. Lisa goes on to speak about reframing bragging as purposeful self-promotion, and the importance of creating a safe environment for people to talk about their successes either at home or at work, to support personal and professional growth. While some research out there advises women not to ‘brag' or celebrate their successes because of potential backlash, Lisa challenges the concept (and the research) and suggests that it's time for us to change the culture and sister up.  She also goes on to explain how exploring one's personal values can be one of many exercises (there are plenty more in her book) to explore meaningful self-promotion, highlighting that we are all the ‘CEO of our own life.' The two women also share their own experiences, clarifying that while this purposeful self-promotion exploration is important, it's often challenging. Anne admits to barely being able to name any of her successes and Lisa responds that ‘she is her book,' meaning that she too has times where she goes back into her shell, wishing to be discovered instead of doing the work of putting herself out there. Thankfully Lisa is crystal clear on her mission: to help others be seen and heard. She leaves listeners with this recommendation: Don't wait for others to give you opportunities, take them into your own hands.  Before adding ‘celebrate your successes and don't tear down others for their achievements.'A powerful conversation that can help all of us reframe what we know about bragging and self-promotion. In this episode, host Anne Mühlethaler speaks with Chris Schembra, a renowned facilitator, community builder and gratitude expert dedicated to transforming professional environments through the power of recognition, belonging and authentic connection. As the author of two bestselling books, ”Gratitude Through Hard Times” and “Gratitude and Pasta,” Chris blends heartfelt storytelling with data-driven insights to deliver impactful keynote addresses and advisory services. His expertise has led him to collaborate with industry giants such as Google, Microsoft, IBM, Dell, and the U.S. Navy, among others. Recognized as a Founding Member of Rolling Stone Magazine's Culture Council and dubbed the "Gratitude Guru" by USA Today, Chris's work has sparked over 500,000 relationships within the workplace. In their conversation, Chris shares with Anne his journey, starting with growing up by the water in South Carolina, his parents' epic parties and his devastating subsequent loss of memory due to ADHD medication. The two then talk about their love of Rome and how Chris was inspired by his own visit to host a Roman style dinner and gathering back home in New York City, for which he invented a pasta recipe. On July 15, 2015, Chris invited 15 friends into his 350-square-foot studio apartment.  Already an engaging event, magic happened when Chris asked one question of his guests that changed everything: “If you could give credit or thanks to one person in your life that you don't give enough credit or thanks to, or you've never thought to thank, who would that be?” From there, Chris' passion for fostering gratitude and meaningful conversations around the dinner table evolved into the creation of the 7:47 Gratitude Experience — so named for the time during that infamous evening that he asked his thought-provoking question. The program is an evidence-based framework designed to strengthen client and team relationships. Since 2020, his company has organised 402 virtual gratitude experiences, migrating to online during the pandemic.Chris and Anne discuss the kind of gratitude practised at Chris' events: not the self-reflective kind, but gratitude directed towards people. He was influenced to do this by the researcher Barbara Fredrickson, who proved in the broaden-and-build theory of positive emotion that gratitude has the ability to actually broaden your thought action repertoire needed for positive effect, making our brains more open for joy, contentment, play and connection. Chris' approach at 7:47 events is rooted in empathy and scientifically backed principles, prioritising creating cultures of appreciation and belonging within leading corporations worldwide. The conversation takes many twists and turns because Chris is an epic storyteller. He and Anne talk about the importance of focus to succeed in business, with Chris quoting his friend Dave who advised him that ‘focus equals growth.' Anne also asks Chris in-depth questions about his two books. Plus Chris honestly discusses some of the hardest times he's experienced, including some serious incidents of non-suicidal self-harm.Anne ends the podcast asking Chris first his signature question, then hers —  “What brings you happiness?" — which brings the two to discuss both hedonic and eudaimonic happiness. To conclude, Chris advises listeners to go out and seek opportunities and that we can go and tell our stories, along with this important message: “Do not underestimate how powerful your story is.”An inspired conversation with a heart-opening storyteller and community builder that will leave you moved. Cath and Jeremy Brown on balanced partnerships, considered designs and Feldspar's commitment to heritage crafts

Cath and Jeremy Brown are the couple behind the beloved design brand Feldspar Studio (@feldsparstudio), known for its useful everyday items, made properly by the careful hands of master craftspeople in their two workshops in England. The couple talk to Anne, who supported them early on as a consultant, about their early careers, how the two met (a very romantic story) and explain how they left London for Devon on a whim after Cath got pregnant with their first son, Milo. They also relay to Anne how they got their hand into ceramics and how, not much after, they decided to turn this creative experiment into a bona fide company. Jeremy is used to wearing many different hats, with a background in art and design from Goldsmith's College and an expertise in woodwork from an earlier time. He also worked for the UN and later the International Trade Center (part of WTO) with ethical and sustainable artisans workshops in remote communities. Meanwhile Cath went from the art world to architecture, building schools in her last job. Both are obsessed with having total control over the design, production and packaging of their products, and the pair, balanced in their skill sets, explain how they split the work between themselves but ultimately make all their decisions together. Their famously ‘wonky' products are considered designs, as Cath explains, made mindfully for superior enjoyment — like the dimples in their coffee mugs or the perfect pour of their teapot. The two are equally excited at the idea to continue to grow the product range while committing to work with labour-intensive crafts that are currently endangered in the UK. With the goal of continuing to make things by hand, the Feldspar duo offer a fresh approach to old materials, creating designs to outlive the owner — true objects for life. Jeremy and Cath also tell Anne about the importance of regularly reevaluating their lifestyle as the company grows, so that they stay true to their priorities: spending time with each other and with their kids. Cath then shares the story of her Neapolitan great-great-grandpa's cookbook and chats to Anne about the studio's upcoming collaborations with artist Tanya Ling. The couple end by revealing their dream future for Felspar, a holistic experience which they jokingly describe as ‘Google, but for making things'. A joyful and insightful conversation with an inspiring entrepreneurial duo. Rahshaana Green is a multidisciplinary wellness consultant who combines her knowledge and experience in science, yoga and building human connection to help people heal. She's a Forrest Yoga Guardian and the Director of Equity and Contemplative Psychotherapy at the Nalanda Institute, where she directs and teaches within the Contemplative Psychotherapy Programs. In their conversation, Rahshaana tells Anne about being a curious kid, a high performer and voracious reader who used books as windows into other worlds. She talks about how she learned the power of agency from her mother, who taught her and her siblings, with a ‘scared-straight' approach, how to make choices to take life into the direction they intended. The oldest of four, Rahshaana admits that her choices were also a potential blueprint for her siblings, and how a desire to influence them positively led her to pursue an early career in science. After receiving her BA in Biophysical Chemistry from Dartmouth College and an MBA from The University of Texas at Austin, Rahshaana talks about how she combined her passion for science and business skills, which led her to pursue a fifteen-year career in Marketing and Business Development for medical device and life science companies.Rahshaana then explains how an accident directed her towards yoga — Forrest Yoga specifically. Able to heal herself through this practice, she tells Anne how she made the choice to certify as a teacher and with the support of an amazing manager was able to do so in parallel to her career. She continued to pursue a personal study in meditation, mindfulness and compassion practices to deepen her own growth and to empower others to cultivate well-being and resilience.Reaching the present, Anne asks Rahshaana to talk through her journey that led her to the Nalanda Institute in Contemplative Science (which is, incidentally, how the two became acquainted). Rahshaana talks in depth about the programs she teaches in Compassion-Based Resilience Training (CBRT). And who needs to explore CBRT? Probably everyone, according to her, because, as we can probably all attest, ‘human-ing' is hard. To conclude, the pair discusses how the power of compassion and mindfulness combined can help people access emotions, including difficult emotions, and become resilient to feelings like discomfort. And they talk about the importance of intimacy — a word that can describe the connection we can hope to have with the body — as a form of ultimate intelligence. A profound and inspiring conversation. Gemma Colao is the co-founder and creative director of OTO (which rhymes with ‘photo'), a UK brand that was created to answer her desire to share the wonder of CBD with as many people as possible through luxurious products and meaningful experiences.Gemma first talks to Anne about her fashion career, as a knitwear designer, and how she was drawn to design and ready-to-wear, inspired by her artist grandmother's bold bohemian style. She started her career with an internship at DKNY, and after graduating from Central St Martins, Gemma worked for the likes of Clements Ribeiro before turning to Esprit and Marks & Spencers, among others. Gemma explains how she jumped on the opportunity to move to the US thanks to her husband. She tells Anne how the pace combined with the workload from her design job took a toll on her and how, sleep-deprived, she was battling anxiety and burnout — that is, until she found CBD. After a colleague made the suggestion to give it a try, Gemma shares what a revelation (or revolution, perhaps) this was for her. Thankfully, she felt the effects of CBD quickly, improving first the quality of her sleep, which in turn lessened her anxiety. This of course had a huge impact on the quality of her life. Inspired as she was by the possibilities offered by CBD, Gemma recounts how she and her husband then set out to open the first legal online dispensary in California. Later on, the couple returned to the UK to find that the quality of CBD products offered in that market was much lower, so Gemma explains how she saw this as an opportunity and that's when they decided to create OTO. Anne herself admits knowing very little about CBD, so the two talk about the nitty gritty of what makes OTO CBD products effective and why they are formulated to feel luxurious but are also backed by science. Gemma shares her vision to build a brand that people can trust, and one that focuses on efficacy as well as experiences and moments, whether from the brand's sleep drops, skincare or their new spa products and beverages (OTO made the first CBD bitters in the world). Anne also asks Gemma to speak to OTO's recent acquisition of the wellness group South West Brands and how she hopes that the newly formed OTO Group becomes a portfolio of global female-focused wellness brands. Finally, the two exchange on their rituals, gratitude, journaling practises and what keeps Gemma grounded and balanced day to day, busy as she is with OTO and her two little boys at home. A rich and engaging interview with a highly creative entrepreneur. Deep Kailey on embracing creativity, Simran and following her spiritual path

Deep Kailey is a creative director, consultant and the artistic director of ‘Without Shape Without Form' (WSWF), an interactive travelling exhibition that bridges the gap between art, spirituality and mental health, approached from the lens of Sikh wisdom. Prior to that, Deep held roles at Dazed and Confused, with Kim Jones and at Vogue India, and at one time was the fashion director for Tatler Magazine. It's in the context of fashion that Anne Muhlethaler, host of OOTC, became acquainted with Deep, when she was starting out as fashion editor for Vogue India in London. In this conversation, the two start with a tale of Deep asking herself ‘the big questions' as a young teenager, after the passing of her mother. They talk about her journey through art school, fashion, how she found her way to Dazed and Confused, under Nichola Formichetti, and later her work as managing director for designer Kim Jones, who's now at Dior and Fendi, respectively, as head of mens and womenswear. They move on to cover the story of how Deep found herself reconnecting with her Sikh roots in her late twenties, and she explains the meaning of the ‘game' and the work of Simran, the focused practice for the mind (which sounds like but isn't the same as meditation) that guided her to discover her own purpose and self-alignment. After cultivating this spiritual practise for many years, Deep has been working with a team of volunteers on WSWF, first an exhibition turned arts organisation, which offers visitors an experience which bridges the gap between art, spirituality and mental health. The project is meant to transcend cultural, social and racial barriers, and explores its subjects through Sikh teachings, bringing them into a contemporary context. Anne and Deep also discuss personal values, the dark power of gossip, the meaning of connection (and its opposite), and compare metaphors of inner landscapes and inner abodes, self-concept and safety. A very spiritual, resourced and open conversation. Kamil Tyebally is the founder of Early Spring NYC, a company that works at the crossroads between events, culture, connection and marketing, to create immersive brand events.Kamil's is an unusual story, and he starts by telling Anne how he went from Singapore to Myanmar to Thailand in his teens, and how he first discovered that life experience could match academic performance. His early passion for taking pictures led him to follow a path in photo-journalism in NYC at first, and Kamil explains about how his father sparked his adventurous spirit, which led him to meet his future self in Mexico City and develop two book projects that took him to Algiers (Algeria) and later to Baghdad (Iraq).Coming back to NYC, Kamil landed in marketing and business development. But, he tells Anne how he was set on getting a job at the innovative Fake Love company. This mission took him on a journey to explore culture, connection, technology and empathy — where, at the end, he found himself as the co-creative for immersive experiential events at Fake Love. Kamil's artistic leanings and his keenness to find what makes people tick is neatly encompassed when he talks with Anne about creating value beyond transaction and sparking moments of connections at his events. Kamil launched his company, Early Spring, just before the start of the pandemic with the objective (and the tagline) of ‘engineering serendipity' — which he describes as finding what people need before they even know they need it themselves. The two close the conversation by discussing vulnerability, instinct and finding a connection to their roots. Tal Zur on the language of crochet, trust and creating social impact through design

Tal Zur is a trained industrial designer who lectures at the Holon Institute of Technology. She is also the co-founder of Iota Project, a Tel Aviv-based lifestyle start-up with the goal to create social impact through design. At the core of this enterprise is an ancient technology, or rather, a technique: crochet. In this interview, Tal talks to Anne about how she came to study industrial design, curatorship and patisserie (an eclectic combination), how she chose to move away from working in fashion and, while she was considering the next steps in her career, how she had a serendipitous connection with her co-founder, Shula Mozes, the one to brainstorm the idea of crochet as the basis for their social mission. Tal explains how industrial design is like a methodology and how she became inclined to approach crochet in a modern way, all the while drawing on old Greek doilies as inspiration. As she tells it, crochet can be communicated and replicated like one could a piece of music, and that's how Iota Project is able to share design drawings with women and collaborate with skilled communities over several countries. Anne and Tal also discuss the meaning and importance of slow design, and how Iota Project aims to create sustainable social impact by being a platform for change, which includes putting the opportunity in the hands of the consumers, designers, architects and other entities that will engage with their products. The two finish by talking about how Tal approaches her life as a mother (of three!) while being an entrepreneur, the importance of trust and not micromanaging when working remotely, and how teaching in front of design students twice a week is a bubble that keeps her feeling creatively connected. A very inspiring interview with a compelling and fascinating woman. Cécile Duranton is the managing director of Time for the Planet, a trail-blazing non-profit citizen fund detecting and financing climate change innovations. Before joining Time for the Planet, Cécile trained as an agronomy engineer, as she is passionate about nature, animals, agriculture and food systems. The young French woman tells Anne how she left home at 14 to attend a specialist highschool to continue to ride and train horses, and later to intern in the UK and in Vietnam. Cécile thrived in her travels, and shares how she discovered that bonds can be formed even when one doesn't speak the local language (though clearly she loves trying). As a business developer for different French companies, she has worked extensively across South East Asia. Living the expat lifestyle, Cécile discusses why she chose to learn new languages — to better understand the culture and build strong relationships and an international network at the same time. Cécile explains how she chose to study in Brazil, and later in New Zealand, and how she ended up turning from the engineering side to the business development side of the industry, changing the arc of her career. She also tells Anne how she got involved in sustainability and, in particular, climate change before making it her first mission. Cécile designs and executes the international strategy of Time for the Planet, so Anne asks her about the mission of the business, how they inspire action in citizens, how they built their model to have maximum impact, why they have a low threshold to entry (you can become a shareholder for as little as 1 euro) and how changing their communication around climate change transformed their business from doom-inaction model to one charged with hope, energy and powering individual action. A fascinating and motivating conversation. Kate shares how Merandi, the brand, was born from a single conversation with her friend and other co-founder, Grace. The savvy marketer also talks about branding, the importance of a strong unique selling point and corporate social responsibility and reminding herself it's good to build a brand and create thoughtful products (all made to order) but that it's equally important to stay grounded and to find ways to give back to society. Kate admits that despite her background in content creation, it's harder for her to focus on this area of the business, having her plate full as a co-founder. The young entrepreneur also discusses her relationship to creativity in business as well as her love of Thai classical piano (her mother is a renowned artist) before talking about mindful rituals and her newfound interest in Ashtanga yoga, which helps her get away from her to-do list to find some peace and quiet. A thoughtful interview with a bright entrepreneur. Known in the yoga world as THE teachers' teacher, Annie Carpenter (@anniecarpentersmartflow) shares her story with Anne, who has been an avid student, first via online platform Glo.com, before attending live Zoom classes and IRL workshops with her in 2022. Annie's journey starts in Virginia, but she tells Anne how she found her path early on with dance, leading her to the Martha Graham company and New York City. Awarded an MBE by Her Majesty Queen Elisabeth II in 2013, named ambassador of the human rights organisation Survival International and Winner of both the Ethical Jeweller of the Year and the Corporate Social Responsibility awards in 2016, and was also winner of the Green Sustainability Award by Town and Country magazine. In this interview, Pippa tells Anne how she fell in love with travel as a young child, following her widowed mother who took her children to exotic places. She became attracted to stones very early on, and she explains how through stones, she keeps a connection to the places and people that each are linked to, and also finds a sense of protection from them.Pippa shares how she went from studying medical anthropology to working with indigenous communities in South-East Asia before starting to develop her own jewellery. She started organically making her own pieces but she also developed her credentials working at Gucci under Tom Ford as a consultant designer in 2003. Even though, in her own words, her organic free flow jewellery felt at odds with the graphic and sexy feel of the Gucci house at the time she was recruited and briefed to go to India and design whatever she thought could work: colour, uneven shapes and a very different new aesthetic for their jewellery. This financially enabled her to start her first project working with the San bushmen in Botswana, combining her love of travel, working with indigenous communities and jewellery. Anne and Pippa discuss the historic importance of adornment and jewellery, going back to the caves of Lascaux, the luxury that is ‘made by hand' but also the great importance of learning to ‘make' or transmitting tradition in the communities that Pippa has been working with, from Bolivia to India, to Jordan, Myanmar and Colombia. With a brand new collection out, made in Colombia from ethically sourced gold called ‘Together Forever', Pippa and Anne talk about the difficulty of not just sourcing clean gold but motivating and educating consumers to talk about it. The designer finishes the interview by sharing her love of books, and how moved she is by the world. In this episode of Out of the Clouds, Anne Muhlethaler interviews Scott Wimsett @ScottWimsett, a presenter, a fashion director and sustainability expert based in the UK. Scott started his agency, Bespoke Banter, in 2006 with a vision of supporting global talent and brands to create social assets in film to support their storytelling. Scott built a reputation for being a supportive and trusted partner for many world-renowned talents who work with his company closely to craft the broadcasted film and images they distribute globally. More recently, Scott launched The Feel Good Fellowship with friend, model, and climate activist Arizona Muse. Among all his endeavours, Scott is committed to encouraging brands to prioritise transparency, accuracy, and research in all their digital content to empower audiences to make more sustainable, environmentally positive choices in the brands they support.Much like Anne, Scott loves to entertain good conversations in addition to his content creation work. Scott has hosted a podcast with Royal Ascot on sustainability, and returned with a new show called ‘Personal Threads', with diverse guests from David Gandy to Paul O'Grady and June Sarpong. In this interview, Scott shares with Anne his story, from how he started on stage acting and dancing before going into modelling and PR — but always with a desire pulling him to TV and presenting. An astute expert in his field, Scott talks about his early wins and what helped establish his reputation, and later about the importance of listening carefully to what is coming next, including how that's guided his moves from his start with Bespoke Banter to the projects he is doing now.Scott shares the thought process that drove him to build his own company and why he felt, and still feels, that film (or video) is essential for brands and talent to tell a detailed story. Scott believes that brands can turn to film to create a documentary of sorts — one that transmits their values and history, and that will communicate their DNA to their audience — but that transparency and vulnerability are key.Scott then tells Anne about his experience with Vipassana, which he discovered when a friend signed him up to attend a silent meditation retreat that transformed his life. He goes on to talk about how the combination of being active in addition to meditation and journaling continues to support him daily and explains that his meditation and other personal health rituals are not a hack or a quick add on, but, as he says, a necessity: ‘It's not like it's painted on. It's not like you are making yourself do it. It becomes just part of who we are. It's just how you live your life.'    Happy listening!     ***You can find Scott on Instagram @https://www.instagram.com/scottwimsett/Discover his company Bespoke Banter -  https://www.bespokebanter.com/And the Feel Good Fellowship - https://www.feelgoodfellowship.com/Scott is also an advisor with the Sustainable Beauty Coalition - https://www.instagram.com/sustainablebeautycoalition/The British Beauty Council - https://britishbeautycouncil.com/The first Royal Ascot podcast hosted by Scott called 'A New Era in Style' -https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/royal-ascot-a-new-era-in-style/id1569576018Bay Garnett, stylist and senior fashion ambassador for Oxfam - https://www.baygarnett.com/pressThe Royal Ascot - https://www.ascot.com/royal-ascot-2023The Royal Ascot 'Personal Threads' podcast hosted by Scott Wimsett & Susan Bender - https://shows.acast.com/personal-threadsThe song Faith by George Michael - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Cs3Pvmmv0EAnne Glenconner's book 'Lady in Waiting' - https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/49945845-lady-in-waiting*** f you enjoyed this episode, click subscribe for more, and consider writing a review of the show on Apple Podcasts, we really appreciate your support and feedback. Nada Ghazal on her love of Beirut, finding courage and creating for connection

Nada Ghazal (@NadaGhazalJewelry) is a jewellery designer and entrepreneur based in Beirut, Lebanon. In this episode of Out of the Clouds,  she shares the story of her relationship with design and creativity with host Anne Muhlethaler. Growing up, Nada shares that she was always fascinated by adorning herself, and while she spent a lot of time painting, she was also making her own jewellery and shoes with the help of local artisans. Even back then, she remembers that her desire was to create objects that would connect her to other people. Nada tells how she landed in graphic design since there weren't any jewellery or fashion courses in Beirut at the time, and which tilted her career towards advertising, giving her resources to start her own brand. Nada recalls how she quit her fancy agency job in Dubai on her 30th birthday, in order not to start her company ‘too late.'The talented creative explains how her vision was to develop an individualistic line, that would be timeless but with jewellery that can be worn day to night — not be left in a safe. And from the start, Nada wanted to have the atelier under the same roof as the rest of the team. Having lived through war and, more recently, survived the terrifying blast that destroyed part of the Lebanese capital, Nada movingly recounts how she strives to translate her experiences into her pieces, even turning a painful feeling into something beautiful. She also talks eloquently about her deep connection to her city, her muse, which she feels has a soul or a spirit all of its own and what inspires her and gives her the courage to get back on her feet, rebuild and start again. The two finish by discussing Nada's wellness and grounding rituals, which include a regular breathing practice in the morning, and her favorite guided meditations. A moving and inspiring interview. The guest for this interview of Out of the Clouds is Siddha Jain, Chief Business Officer at Bombae, by Bombay Shaving Company,  a premium women's personal care and grooming brand launched during the pandemic. Siddha is a savvy and creative executive who in her own words followed the expected track, first studying hard to first become an engineer, then obtaining an MBA, and later becoming a consultant at Bain & Company. Host Anne invites Siddha to talk about her story (hint: her goal is to prove herself). She explains how her mother imbued her with vision and taught her the value of being persistent. She then reveals her own vision, with the not-so-hidden aim to become an expert in other fields, essentially a ‘jack of all trades.' Siddha also brings her ikigai, the Japanese concept of having a sense of purpose, and shares how her passion for dance and creating events are extracurricular pursuits that connect her to the greater purpose of her life. The pair touch on Bombae's values and the content strategies that the brand uses to connect with its customers, including a collaboration with India's top women stand-up comedians. And, as a woman at the executive level, Siddha offers her thoughts about what helps her feel confident as well as how and why she brings her full self to work. Then Anne asks Siddha to talk about what it's like to build a brand and design products for a bold and cheeky consumer. Bombae's mission around hair removal is raised, which leads them to explore the complex relationship women in India and around the world have with their body and facial hair. A deeply engaging interview with a thoughtful and passionate woman. On this episode of Out of the Clouds, Anne interviews generalist (or jack of all trades) Salman Ansari, also known as the Quick Brown Fox (@DareToRant). The talented writer enjoys wearing many different hats — he is a startup founder, a CTO, a web & iOS engineer, a teacher, an illustrator and DJ, among other things. The two of them start off by talking about Salman's early career, how he ended up leaving Canada to relocate to California to become a startup co-founder, and the importance of meaningful relationships when making bold career moves. Salman explains how a couple of courses, and the popular success among his friends of his blog in college, called Dare to Rant, set him up to start writing online. Salman shares that he discovered that writing essays helped him synthesise the knowledge he was acquiring. Anne then leads him to talk about one particular piece, ‘The Polymath Playbook', which went viral after being tweeted by Tobias Lütke, CEO of Shopify. Salman reflects on how his  personal story (which he almost deleted) had resonated with his readers more than the mental models he'd written about. The two of them geek out about why stories are so fundamental to us as humans, what it means for our inner and outer communication and how to best package ideas so they are easier for readers to consume. Salman is currently working on a book of fables, which he is illustrating as well, so he spends a bit of time telling Anne how that project came about and the importance of having a community who gets to ask ‘what happens next' supporting us when things are getting hard. On that note, he also discusses how to figure out when procrastination is at play or whether we just need to continue to work on a piece. A few years ago, Salman suffered a burnout and he shares how he created a space for himself with meditation. Then they discuss at length how mindfulness combined with journaling and walking were complementary resources that, in his words, made it impossible for him to gaslight himself, thereby enabling him to make the hard choice to walk away from a job he no longer loved doing. A wide-ranging, inspiring and profound interview, happy listening!  ***You can find Salman at https://salman.io/On twitter @ https://twitter.com/daretorantOn Instagram @ https://www.instagram.com/salmanscribbles/On Youtube @https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRy_uuWSw_z0g_xav4ZUA0Q/videos?view=0&sort=pSalman's blog is https://salman.io/blog/and you can read the Polymath Playbook here https://salman.io/blog/polymath-playbook/David Perell - https://perell.com/Write of Passage course - https://writeofpassage.school/Seth Godin's blog - https://seths.blog/Writing in Community, the Akimbo course - https://akimbo.com/writingincommunityWill Storr's book, The Science of Storytelling - https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/43183121-the-science-of-storytellingRobert McKee's book, Story - https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/48654.Story?from_search=true&from_srp=true&qid=PjTpcJtnyL&rank=1Amishi Jha's book, Peak Mind - https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/55200359-peak-mind?from_search=true&from_srp=true&qid=P738uo7wz4&rank=1The Little Prince, book by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry - https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/157993.The_Little_Prince?from_search=true&from_srp=true&qid=wgzPcETJAK&rank=1Elizabeth Gilbert's book Big Magic - https://www.elizabethgilbert.com/books/big-magic/The talk by Elizabeth Gilbert Anne and Salman talk about - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fSsMjI1OcgMThe course 'Psychology for Writers'Rest by Alex Soojung-Kim  Pang - https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/29502354-restAndy's notes - https://notes.andymatuschak.org/About_these_notesThe Spotify playlist of Out of the Clouds's guests answering: what song best represents you - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4Viqm1uiiHtM5Y0FwTCtFR?si=1d27a0529d65454a*** If you enjoyed this episode, click subscribe for more, and consider writing a review of the show on Apple Podcasts, we really appreciate your support and feedback, thank you  so much for listening! For all notes and transcripts, please visit Out Of The Clouds on Simplecast - https://out-of-the-clouds.simplecast.com/  Sign up for Anne's email newsletter for more from Out of the Clouds at https://annevmuhlethaler.com. Follow Anne: Twitter: @annvi  IG: @_outoftheclouds

In this episode of Out of the Clouds, host Anne Muhlethaler interviews fashion journalist and writer Ana Santi. Ana has held various roles, including deputy editor at Drapers Magazine, a renowned UK fashion trade magazine, before going in-house at a brand called Jigsaw, where she became their first editor in chief. There she launched an in-house magazine and even published a book, called “Comfort Zones”, a collection of original stories by 28 women writers, including Pandora Sykes, Elizabeth Day, and Emma Gannon among others for the charity Women for Women International. Her new book, “Three Things to Help Heal the Planet”, was published in May 2022, and Anne was very keen to get into it with her and to have a conversation about the important topics that are covered across the 21 essays that make up the book.So in this interview, the two talk about Ana's journey, from her native Brazil to the UK as an eight-year-old, her love of languages and what brought her to journalism. Ana shares how and why working as a fashion reporter was a launching pad towards this new book to talk about sustainability and the possibility of individual action to help the planet — something she outlines is meant for ‘people who have choices', as she goes on to explain. The two end on discussing why we should learn to be better ancestors, and how that possibly will help us leave the planet in what is hopefully a better state than it currently is. A thought-provoking, enjoyable interview that will hopefully leave listeners with the desire to both read the book and, if they have the choice, do their bit to help heal the planet. Happy listening!***Selected links from episode:You can find Ana at https://www.ana-santi.com/on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/anasanti1/on Twitter - https://twitter.com/Ana_C_Santion LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/ana-santi-8a28a51/And find all her info and up to date links via her Link Tree - https://linktr.ee/anasanti1Drapers online - https://www.drapersonline.com/The book Comfort Zones - https://www.ana-santi.com/comfort-zonesBritish brand Jigsaw - https://www.jigsaw-online.com/Mums for Lungs, the charity - https://www.mumsforlungs.org/This Could Be our Future, the book by Yancey Strickler - https://www.ystrickler.com/book/The Bento Society - http://www.bentoism.org/To Sell is Human, book by Daniel Pink - https://www.danpink.com/books/to-sell-is-human/We Are the Weather, book by Jonathan Safran Foer - https://wearetheweatherbook.com/A Beautiful Constraint, book by Adam Morgan and Mark Bardem - http://www.abeautifulconstraint.com/the-book-2Tristram Stuart, the food waste campaigner - https://www.tristramstuart.co.uk/Robert McKee, author and teacher - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_McKeeGoooders website, ethical and sustainable fashion and accessories - https://goooders.com/Sapiens, the book by Yuval Noah Harari - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sapiens:_A_Brief_History_of_HumankindThe quote by Ernest Hemingway, about 'finding the emotion - https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/1135556-find-what-gave-you-emotion-what-the-action-was-thatCatch 22, the book by Joseph Heller - https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/168668.Catch_22 ***If you enjoyed this episode, click subscribe for more, and consider writing a review of the show on Apple Podcasts, we really appreciate your support and feedback, thank you  so much for listening!

Nishanth Chopra on connecting the dots, the seed-to-sew model and regenerative farming

Nishanth Chopra is a young, innovative Indian entrepreneur who in 2016 founded a unique sustainable brand and collective called Oshadi (pronounced aw-sha-dhi, which means ‘essence of nature' or ‘healing plant' in Sanskrit - @oshadi_collective)In this interview with Anne Muhlethaler, Nishanth tells Anne about growing up in the textile town of Erode and how, after returning from university in the UK, he decided to carve a new path for himself by breaking with the expectations of his family and launch a small sustainable ready-to-wear brand. In his pursuit, Nishanth came to realise the depth of problems that were underlying the traditional fashion production model, even when trying to do it sustainably. He explains to Anne how, out of a desire to look after the earth after creating clothing, from printing and dyeing to weaving and spinning cotton, the collective started cultivating a new fashion system with a 50-acre regenerative cotton farm.Nishanth says that if he has any talent it's really just connecting the dots — right time, right place, right people — and that's how he was able, step by step, to launch this 'seed to sew concept'. And Oshadi doesn't just look after not just the soil or think of the finished product. Instead, Nishanth shares his vision with the farmers and artisans who collectively work on this project. He says his aim is that the complexity (of figuring out this new respectful way of working with the earth) should end with ‘us' — making it possible for anyone else in the future to replicate this radically transparent model. Nishanth also tells Anne how meaningful change can happen when there is collaboration through real respect for someone's work — something that's not always shown to Indian craftsmen and women from a Western point of view. A unique voice and gifted entrepreneur, who hopefully will leave you inspired. Abigail had the chance to find her way to Lady Bamford's organic wellness space in the Cotswolds, which was an important stepping stone in her career. In addition, the skin expert, who's also trained as a yoga teacher, shares the successes and the emotional ups and downs in her journey, or ‘mental health tweaks' as she calls them. Of course, Abigail talks about the art of face massage, its physical benefits, and the power of positive touch, as well. When it comes to looking after our skin, Abigail affirms that education is important. And indeed, knowledge is power — both on the product side but also in understanding the underlying tissues, muscles and bones. The woman who's been named by the press as a ‘skin genius' doesn't just use a holistic approach, she also loves to use what technology can offer, relying on safe and advanced tools that support her clients for treatments that are completely bespoke. Anne and Abigail discuss the pressures of being online, with Abigail in front of the camera herself, as well as what she sees as trends in the tweakments space.
