Nuestra Palabra's Tony Diaz, El Librotraficante, welcomes author of the acclaimed books ZARZAMORA and WHERE THE RECKLESS ONES COME TO DIE Vincent Cooper, who joins us to talk about his latest book from Mouthfeel Press, INFIDELIS. Tony speaks with Vincent Tuesday on KPFT Houston 90.1 FM on Tuesday August 22nd at 7:00 PM CDT as we discuss Vincent's powerful new book. You can hear it live via KPFT.org if you're not in the Houston area; otherwise you can catch the podcast afterwards! Vincent Cooper's INFIDELIS is a powerful collection of poetry that delves into the life of a Chicano outcast, drawing from the author's personal experiences as a United States Marine. Through lyric and Blues poetry, Cooper paints a vivid picture of the 9/11 era, capturing the raw and authentic emotions that accompanied his journey. Vincent Cooper is a poet living in San Antonio, Texas. He is a former United States Marine and has published in Ban This! The BSP Anthology of Xicano Literature, Big Bridge Magazine: Refreshing San Antonio, and La Voz de Esperanza Tony Diaz Writer and activist Tony Diaz, El Librotraficante, is a Cultural Accelerator. He was the first Chicano to earn a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Houston Creative Writing Program. In 1998, he founded Nuestra Palabra: Latino Writers Having Their Say (NP), Houston's first reading series for Latino authors. The group galvanized Houston's Community Cultural Capital to become a movement for civil rights, education, and representation. When Arizona officials banned Mexican American Studies, Diaz and four veteran members of NP organized the 2012 Librotraficante Caravan to smuggle books from the banned curriculum back into Arizona. He is the author of The Aztec Love God. His book, The Tip of the Pyramid: Cultivating Community Cultural Capital, is the first in his series on Community Organizing. * This is part of a Nuestra Palabra Multiplatform broadcast. * Video airs on www.Fox26Houston.com. * Audio airs on 90.1 FM Houston, KPFT, Houston's Community Station, where our show began. * Live events. I had to do it. I had to put the raw audio from the show on April 14, 2005 when Dizzee Rascal joined us in the KPFT Studios for an Epic Freestyle with DJ Chill, DJ Rapid Ric and DJ Wonder from the UK on the beats and Grit Boys and Golden Child and more joining in on the mic. This is a classic, pass it to the next man please. Woman. Everyone needs to hear and experience this realness. When Houston Rap and London Grime first came together. I think that Bun B and Dizzee recorded together for the first time the day after this show. And they met almost exactly one year earlier. Those were the daze. ENJOY!

They done went and let me back on the airwaves THE ACTUAL AIRWAVES not just the innernet on KPFT in Houston. At least for now. Much respect to Jeffery Thames and the long running show Sound Awake. I think he started in 1996 and left last month. So I am filling in at the moment. I call this one the Uncensored version because I had to prerecord of course as no one is allowed to go into the station and I got so hyped for Fat Tony remixing the Megan and Beyonce song (weird right I know) and I opened the show with it and didn't listen to the lyrics. So the file that ran on the radio had really harsh radio edits. This is the raw and real deal. Next week if they let me back on I won't mess up, I hope. Anyway, I want to be back on KPFT really badly. Even from the home office. Whatever. Much respect I love you all. Thank you for listening and sharing and caring.

Make Robots Not War

KPFT Houston, the little radio station that could has stood as a cultural icon of Houston for nearly half a century against a changing media landscape and dwindling listener-subscribers.  Today the 47-year-old station faces a new crisis in a long string of which have plagued the Pacifica network for decades and threatens to take them off the air, this time for good. On the 14th of July, former interim General Manager Dr. Obidike Kamau was terminated by Pacifica Foundation’s Interim Executive Director Bill Crosier after only 90 days on the job, which set the KPFT community ablaze. Crosier cites severe, even existentially threatening financial difficulties as the cause for relieving Dr. Kamau from his position which he held for less than three months. Those in support of Dr. Kamau’s reinstatement however claim racism is the primary motivation for his removal. The Pacifica Foundation owns KPFT and, as of this recording, carries as much as $7 million in debt. What we have in store for you is a series of interviews myself and Annika O’Brien conducted over the past few weeks with a few people who captured our interest with regard to the crisis at KPFT. We did not intend for this to be a comprehensive set of interviews, but did want to talk to a number of people with something of an inside view of the station, historical perspectives, as well as those at the middle of this crisis and to give them the opportunity to say their piece. We’ll almost certainly follow up as time passes and this story develops, but for now we begin with Doyle Odom, former afternoon engineer, with whom I worked on KPFT News, and who is the current host of KPFT’s Radioactive, which airs Monday nights from ten-P-M to midnight. We turn to him for one inside perspective on the Crisis at KPFT.

This is the first ever Damage Control Radio show on KPFT. I’ve been digging in boxes and boxes of tapes looking for this for over a year, since Zin (Anthony Mills) passed, in January of 2016. OK I haven’t been actively looking for it for a year, but I did look for it last year, in January and in December. When I got the news that JD (Jason Dozier) passed, I was pretty stunned, that was one of my lil brothers, one of my real ones. When I realized that I lost my brother Zin in January and then my brother JD in December, I went super crazy with memories. So many with them both, but then I was like, “Oh shit man, JD was the DJ on the first few Damage Control’s.” The three of us literally started Damage Control together, and I’ve lost them both. We’ve lost them both. Messes me up so bad. Listening to this recording I was like, “damn, we came out swinging. Hard.” I need someone to take these tapes and rip em way better, the sound isn’t incredible on this three hour show. The b-sides of both tapes are lower than the a-sides, I don’t know why. I don’t know anything about these computer things. All I know is that the music jams. I was rearranging some things in my storage space like I do from time to time and was going through mad tapes, so many tapes looking for any of the shows that I did with Zin and JD together. I found this one and thought it was like the third show. My first daughter was born on May 18th of 2002 and I always thought the first Damage Control show was on May 23rd of 2002. But that may have been the try out show. So I popped in this tape from June 13th of 2002 and about an hour in I hear myself say that JD is about to get live in the mix. He had been spinning for all the breaks since the start of the show, but I never said anything till then. I was like “YES FINALLY I FOUND A ZIN AND JD TAPE!” And I thought it was the third show. And I went to bed. The next day I was listening as I was ripping it and I heard myself say that this was the first ever show and I was like damn man, I found it. The first ever Damage Control show, with my brothers Zin and JD. I really can’t even deal. I was back in Houston for seven months at that point, after three years in Chicago. I was hot in the middle of my time with Murder Dog Magazine, and I was starting to do some things on the internet, mostly with Ray Tamarra’s thecrusade.net, a pioneering music information website for sure. Ray called into the show even. Anyway, the show features a lot of Midwest gangsta shit, some Houston shit, and some super special guests. Baby Bash was in the house back when his name was still Baby Beesh and he brought along Mercilous, we had Lo Life from the 5th Ward Boyz in the house, Sam J, Bobby Fine, SMUGGLAZ, man it really went down. Damage Control continues to this day on 90.1 FM KPFT in Houston, www.kpft.org on the net, etc. Every Wednesday night 11pm – 2am. We Love You Zin! We Love You JD! Thank you Les Jacobs for the photo...

On Sunday January 3rd, 2016, I lost a brother, and the world lost a leader. My brother Zin and a friend were killed in a tragic crash in Denver, as they sat at a red light and a man in an SUV who was fleeing some firemen who had approached his vehicle as he was asleep at a red light just a couple of blocks away. He hit the gas, reached a speed of about 70mph, and about two blocks down the road, he killed one of my greatest friends. On June 6, 2016 I went back to what I still consider my home base, KPFT in Houston, to gather a group of friends and family in tribute to our brother Zin. We went back to where it all started with he and I. We started the Damage Control program on KPFT on May 23rd, 2002. And it hurt like crazy to come back for this reason, but it raised me and I am sure a lot of people up super high as they heard stories of how Zin touched half of Houston with his great vibes and energies. Dude is still a ray of light shining down on us all. Please share far and wide. All music included on this show was either produced by Zin and performed by Zin, or performed live by the Free Radicals.
