Deb Fischer Reintroduces HAULS Act To Improve Agriculture Transportation Safety U.S. Senator Deb Fischer (R-Neb.), a member of the Senate Agriculture Committee, has reintroduced the Haulers of Agriculture and Livestock Safety (HAULS) Act, legislation aimed at strengthening the transportation system that supports America's farmers, ranchers, and agricultural supply chains. The HAULS Act addresses longstanding challenges faced by agricultural and livestock haulers, particularly those related to federal hours-of-service (HOS) regulations. By modernizing these rules, the bill seeks to improve safety, flexibility, and efficiency across the agriculture transportation industry. Key Provisions of the HAULS Act The legislation includes several critical updates designed to better reflect real-world agricultural operations: Expanded Hours-of-Service Exemptions The HAULS Act would eliminate the requirement that agricultural and livestock HOS exemptions apply only during state-designated planting and harvesting seasons, allowing haulers greater flexibility year-round. Clearer Definition of Agricultural Commodities The bill amends and clarifies the definition of “agricultural commodities” based on feedback from agriculture and livestock organizations, reducing confusion and improving regulatory consistency. Extended 150 Air-Mile HOS Exemption Building on a previous Fischer provision already signed into law, the HAULS Act authorizes a 150 air-mile exemption from HOS requirements on the destination side of a haul, giving agricultural commodity haulers more operational flexibility when delivering goods. The National Cattlemen's Beef Association (NCBA), along with numerous state cattle associations, is urging lawmakers to support the Hauling Exemptions for Livestock Protection (HELP) Act, introduced by Representative Jeff Hurd (R-CO). This critical legislation would provide long-overdue relief for livestock haulers, protecting them from the burdensome Hours of Service (HOS) and Electronic Logging Device (ELD) mandates. HELP Act Would Reinstate Vital Exemptions for Livestock Transportation The HELP Act seeks to permanently codify HOS and ELD exemptions that were temporarily granted by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) during the COVID-19 pandemic. These exemptions allowed livestock truck drivers to safely transport live animals without being restricted by rigid federal mandates. For nearly two years, these waivers gave haulers the flexibility to adapt to weather, traffic, and the unique demands of transporting live animals—ensuring animal welfare and supply chain efficiency. However, once the exemptions expired, livestock haulers once again faced regulations that threaten both. By reinstating these exemptions, the HELP Act would ensure drivers can continue safely and humanely transporting livestock across the country without unnecessary delays or stress to animals. Speed Limiter Rule Dropped, But More Relief Is Needed In a recent win for the livestock industry, FMCSA and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced the withdrawal of a proposed rule to require speed limiters on commercial trucks. While this was welcomed by livestock haulers, HOS and ELD mandates remain a pressing concern. Unlike other freight, cattle and other livestock cannot be easily stopped, unloaded, or left idle during transport. Delays can cause undue stress or injury to animals, making flexible transportation rules essential. NCBA Thanks Rep. Jeff Hurd and Urges Congressional Action The NCBA has voiced strong support for the HELP Act and applauds Rep. Jeff Hurd for introducing this livestock-friendly legislation. By passing the HELP Act, Congress can ensure that haulers have the tools and flexibility needed to protect animal welfare, support ranchers, and strengthen the food supply chain.   To Review The Bill, Click HERE. Ford Motor Company doesn't see the all-new 2025 Ford Expedition as just another big SUV. It has a larger purpose in mind. Expedition Brand Manager Luis Perez told AOTR Host Jack Nerad that Ford wants to influence American families to spend more quality time together. So, they have created a massive vehicle that is full of innovation and capability. Nerad was part of a small cadre of journalists who got early access to the 2025 Expedition and its executives, engineers, and product planners. In this episode, we will share his in-depth interview with Perez, giving you uncommon insight into the creation of the new Expedition and the intriguing features that set it apart from other large SUVs. Our road test segment this week gives you a double dose of Toyota. Co-host Chris Teague was at the wheel of the 2025 Toyota Camry XSE AWD. Toyota has gone all-hybrid with the Camry in this all-new iteration of one of America's most popular vehicles, and Teague will provide his verdict on the result. At the same time Teague was driving the all-new Camry at one end of the country, Jack Nerad was driving the all-new 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser at the other. The legendary Toyota Land Cruiser returns after a hiatus in a more compact version that is the original 1958 model that introduced the model to the U.S. Of course, the '58 Land Cruiser didn't sport a hybrid powertrain, a variety of electronic driver assistance technology and a sophisticated infotainment system, but, as they say, the more things stay the same, the more they change. What has stayed the same is the Land Cruiser's stout all-terrain prowess. Pricing for the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser starts with the 1958 trim at a base manufacturer's suggested retail price of $55,950, and that's the model Nerad tested. It features retro-styled round headlights and TOYOTA spelled out on its throwback grille. Cloth seats and the eight-inch touchscreen indicate its modest aspirations and desire to keep the price accessible if you can call $56K accessible. Teague and Nerad will share more thoughts on the model. Car buyers could be hitting a double-whammy this weekend as a couple of factors combine to make buying a new car even harder. The hurricane and the recently settled longshoremen's strike have combined to throw a wrench into car buying. We'll give you strategies that can help you get the best deal you can. Also in the news, hydrogen fuel cell technology is getting a second look, and we'll tell you which major global automaker might put more money into the technology as a solution to battery-electric vehicle's continued issues. The latest-generation Toyota Tundra is a popular full-size pickup. While its 5.7-liter V8 didn't carry over to the new generation, a turbocharged 3.4-liter V6, and a turbocharged 3.4-liter V6 hybrid take its spot. The top-flight hybrid powertrain shoves 479 hp and 583 lb-ft of torque through a 10-speed automatic. This truck also comes with a large touchscreen media system, comfortable seating, tech, and ride quality you'd expect from a full-size sedan.  Carrying the lower-priced load for Lexus, the ES 300h might not be as exciting as the company's LC500, but it fills an important, mid-size role. In 300h trim, this hybrid people mover packs a 2.5-liter I4 under the hood that works with an eCVT to make 215 combined system hp. This hybrid sedan might not hustle from stoplight to stoplight, but it also manages over 44 mpg combined. The pair breaks down how trucks have changed roles in the marketplace, and how mid-size sedans are losing some ground to crossovers, SUVs, and trucks. Today, we dive into the history of the band with some of the hands at its headquarters in Ft. Payne, Alabama, around which all three founding members -- Gentry, lead vocalist Randy Owen, and the late guitarist Jeff Cook -- all grew up and kept ties to over all the years of chart-toppers, touring, and all the trucking involved with the operation. Kenworth's sponsorship rekindles an old relationship between the band and the truck company. Founding member Teddy Gentry called the original relationship a product of necessity back during the height of the band's popularity, when he said the tour was supported by as many as five tractor-trailers full to the gills with equipment the band's operation toted from place to place. He can't recall just how it started, but “we needed trucks," he said, "and we were exploding on the scene as far as the music goes." Teddy Gentry called it certainly a “good promotion for them,” Kenworth, too, with Alabama trailers festooned with band insignia pulled across North America by Kenworth. It was good for the band, too, recalled Teddy Gentry, leading to Alabama featuring in the driver-tribute show year after year at the Mid-America Trucking Show through the late 1980s up through an official farewell tour in the early 2000s. This rekindled sponsorship, Gentry added, has been great to “reunite a relationship that works, and especially that my son's involved,” he said. For Josh Gentry, his father felt, trucking with the band and family is like “a dream come true” in some ways. Josh's own words underscore that, to an extent, reflecting during our run in the single 2021 Kenworth T680 that powers the Alabama-controlled portion of the tour today that, like so many an owner-operator and driver the nation over, he takes pride in doing what he does. The bulk of the talk was recorded in-cab with Gentry on the haul up to Nashville from band headquarters in Ft. And we'll drop in at the load site in Nashville where Alabama's gear is housed, and where the Josh Gentry hauled into to fill the wrapped 48-foot Great Dane show trailer to stage that Thursday night at Bridgestone. Tour operations managers and crew there spoke to all manner of aspects of Josh Gentry's and their own work for the band, and the tight relationship between father and son Gentry as well.
