This week on DBC, Freddie Kraft, Tommy Baldwin, and Karsyn Elledge are joined by former NASCAR Cup Series driver Steve Park. Fresh off of the Kyle Larson-dominated Cup & Xfinity races at Bristol, the group dives into the hot topics surrounding the racing over the weekend. But first, Steve Park shares some legendary stories about his time racing with Tommy, and the moment Dale Earnhardt asked him to drive for DEI. The group later debates NASCAR's use of PJ1 on the surface at Bristol, William Sawalich's contact with Conor Zilisch, only one natural caution on Sunday, and why we shouldn't be upset about Larson's dominating race in the Cup Series. Later the group fields calls on Reaction Theatre, answers questions from the fans in #AskDBC and gives their preview for the long anticipated return of Rockingham this weekend. Dale Earnhardt Jr. sits down with longtime NASCAR competitor Jeff Green to learn more about how he rose from the short tracks of the Midwest to having one of the most dominant seasons in the NASCAR Xfinity Series history. After growing up in the footsteps of two racing brothers, David and Mark, also of NASCAR fame, Jeff ventured down a path that landed him at Dale Earnhardt Inc. in 1995. When he took a call from the Intimidator himself, DEI was at an interesting point in its history, where Dale Sr. was looking to retire from part-time NASCAR Busch Series racing and put someone in the car full-time. Jeff and the No. 3 team had moments of brilliance and strong runs, but he felt it was still “Dale Sr.'s team” and he decided to try out a different opportunity.Jeff found victory lane for the first time in his NASCAR Xfinity career with Diamond Ridge Motorsports at Las Vegas in 1997. The team was excited about Jeff's success and rushed him into the Cup Series, which Jeff explains was a difficult transition to make, and before long the team shut down. His glory years in the Xfinity Series came from 1999 to 2001 when he had two runner-up points efforts and a dominant 2000 championship run, where he won by over 600 points. The success brought an opportunity with Richard Childress Racing and Jeff, feeling like he was in the prime of his career, jumped at the chance to drive for a premier racing team. But when a run-in with his teammate Kevin Harvick ultimately got him fired, Jeff began a journey of moving from team to team, looking for stability. Along the way, he spent time back at DEI as well as at Richard Petty Motorsports driving the famed 43 before retiring from driving in 2021.Dale and Jeff reflect on their years spent racing each other in the Xfinity ranks, Dale's first memories of Jeff at DEI, late model racing trips, and Jeff's current day-to-day activities.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. sits down with longtime NASCAR crew chief Paul Andrews to learn more about his journey from being a vacuum repairman to a Cup championship-winning team leader. After being raised by his grandparents in Louisiana, Paul found his way to St. Louis where he reconnected with his mother and took a job working at his stepfather's motel as a maintenance person. When he was working on a vacuum cleaner one day, he went to the local O.K. Vacuum store where he connected with Rusty Wallace, his father Russ, and Uncle Gary, and soon after took a job with the company. Along with this new role of employment came the opportunity to work in Rusty's race shop after hours, and Paul began traveling with Rusty as he found his footing in the short-track late model and NASCAR worlds.Once Wallace went full-time NASCAR Cup racing in 1984, Paul again found himself in Louisiana, this time running Rusty's sportsman late model program. Paul temporarily retired from the sport in 1986, but it wasn't long before he took a call from up-and-comer Alan Kulwicki, establishing one of the hardest-working duos in the Cup garage. The team would overcome the odds and bring home the 1992 Cup season championship. After Alan's untimely passing in a 1993 plane crash, the team was bought out by Geoff Bodine, and Paul would spend a couple of years honoring his late friend before moving on to other endeavors with Kranefuss-Penske, Dale Earnhardt Inc., Petty Enterprises, and Michael Waltrip Racing. Today, Paul can be found taking it easy, managing his various properties and moonlighting from time to time as a crew chief for JR Motorsports' late model stock program, working with Dale Jr. when he gets behind the wheel for short track competition.

Dale Jarrett stretches his fuel supply to sneak a win away from the dominant … and … as it turns out in this issue, controversy magnet … Jeff Gordon. The following is an excerpt from a draft of a book I'm working on. It's about my recovery from a broken neck and spinal cord injury, but also much more than that. As I continue to work on it, I may include other writings and ramblings here on my blog. They may or may not make it into the final draft. If you're a Nikkola Newsletter subscriber, you'll be the first to know when the book is finished. “I'm going over the handlebars,” I thought as my front bike tire dropped off the edge of a three-foot skinny bridge. A fraction of a second later, my front tire hit the ground, causing my bike to catapult me around the tire, throwing me head-first into the ground. My head hit the ground, and then my neck absorbed the force from the rest of my body, moving in the same direction as my head. I saw darkness and then a flash of light. And then I was lying flat on my back. My hands moved. My legs did not. I had no feeling below my waist. I instantly knew this was a bad situation. I told our grandson Asher to get Grandma Vanessa, who was ahead of us on the trail. She heard me, threw her bike into the woods, and ran back to where I lay. She quickly sprung to action, calling 911 and flagging down other riders to help. As I lay there, I knew I'd sustained a serious neck injury and that there was a good chance I'd never walk again. I didn't feel sad or angry, or discouraged. I didn't panic, as I knew that would only make things worse, not to mention that it would scare our grandson. Once Vanessa had first responders on the way, I started to ponder what life would be like if I never walked again. I'd been injured before, but not like this. I wondered how I'd make the most of a life without the ability to walk. Or what if I didn't have use of my legs or arms? How would I rig up a way to exercise? How could I use my mind alone to contribute to the world and support our family? Could I read and write more? Could I add to my education? I knew that the faster I accepted that life might forever look different, the faster I'd be able to make the most of that life. I thought about multiple possible futures and resolved to accept whichever would become reality based on the results of my injury. As I've learned to do throughout my life, I jumped from the reality of an unwanted situation to acceptance of that situation. As I later found out from Vanessa, she did the same. Neither of us spent a moment dwelling on what happened and how we'd want it to be different. Each of us, in our own minds, decided we'd make the most of our current reality. We accepted things as they were. Accepting Illness I'd had a lot of practice with that throughout my life, which made acceptance of my circumstances easy the day that I crashed on my bike. I began learning the value of accepting reality as it was as a child. I got severely sick when I was four years old. I don't remember it, but I had aches throughout my body and was extremely fatigued. I saw doctors in my hometown of Ely, Minnesota, in Duluth, and eventually at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. The doctors didn't immediately know what was wrong with me. They ran tests all over my body, even doing a biopsy of my testicles at one point. Though I was too young to appreciate the importance of my balls fully, I knew enough to get squeamish about that procedure. After much poking and prodding, the physicians finally figured out what was wrong. I had leukemia. Acute lymphocytic leukemia, to be precise. Most of my treatment took place through the Mayo Clinic, though our hometown doctor, Dr. Steve Park, played a crucial role in my treatment and recovery as well. We carried on our relationship with the Mayo Clinic for 15 years. Doctors cure this type of leukemia easily today, but when I had it, the cure was a new thing. At four years old, it's pretty hard to comprehend what cancer means, though the doctors at the Mayo tried to explain it as best they could. ...

Welcome to the Film at Lincoln Center podcast! On today's episode of our daily NYFF59 edition, NYFF Director Eugene Hernandez has a conversation with the team behind The French Dispatch: director Wes Anderson, producer Jeremy Dawson, and cast members Adrien Brody, Bill Murray, Steve Park, and Jason Schwartzman Zooming in from Spain, and cast members Anjelica Fellini, Lois Smith, Bob Balaban, Léa Seydoux, and Jeffrey Wright joining in person from New York. The French Dispatch is a selection in the Spotlight section of this year's festival. Wes Anderson's unmistakable cinematic style proves delightfully suited to periodical format in this missive from the eponymous expatriate journal. Brought to press by a corps of idiosyncratic correspondents, the issue includes reports on a criminal artist and his prison guard muse, student revolutionaries, and a memorable dinner with a police commissioner and his personal chef. As brimming with finely tuned texture as a juicy issue of a certain New York–based magazine to which the film pays homage, The French Dispatch features precision work from a full masthead of collaborators (including Bill Murray, Timothée Chalamet, Tilda Swinton, Benicio del Toro, Frances McDormand, and Jeffrey Wright), each propagating inventive dedication to detail. Explore what's playing at NYFF59 and get tickets at filmlinc.org/nyff.
Wes Anderson's new film, “The French Dispatch,” is about a magazine, and it was inspired by Anderson's long-standing love of The New Yorker. In this special episode, introduced by the articles editor Susan Morrison, cast members read excerpts from classic works associated with the magazine. Bill Murray reads a letter from the editor Harold Ross to an angry writer, Steve Park reads James Thurber, and Elisabeth Moss reads E. B. White. Owen Wilson reads Joseph Mitchell's piece on rats; Frances McDormand reads Mavis Gallant's record of the 1968 student uprising in Paris; Tilda Swinton reads a Calvin Tomkins art-world profile; and Jeffrey Wright reads James Baldwin's “Equal in Paris,” a remarkable indictment of French institutions.

Our first episode of Season Three of CKA's Korean American Perspectives podcast series features Steve Park, the Founder and Executive Director of Little Lights Urban Ministries here in Washington, D.C. Since its founding in 1995, Steve Park dedicates his time and energy to serving those especially in need within the African American community. However, it was not always a walk in the park for Steve. In this interview, Steve paints a picture of his upbringing as a Korean immigrant, his transformation from being a devout atheist, the founding of Little Lights, and the work he currently does today during the global pandemic. As we delve into his work in racial reconciliation and his Race Literacy 101 class, Steve reminds us how Korean Americans can do better and play a significant role in the national conversations around Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity (DEI). The NASCAR Cup Series has moved on from Daytona, but they're still in Florida. J.D. and Derrick give you their picks for Homestead, drivers to think about for your fantasy lineups, and why the car that could very well be the biggest mover on Sunday should be called the "Croissant Rocket." Additionally, Chip Ganassi got in trouble because of his guest that he brought to Daytona last weekend, and Denny Hamlin was very interested in this guest's return to the garage. The guys also discussed the IndyCar test at Barber Motorsports Park, the Bristol Dirt Race qualifying procedures for Cup as well as the World of Outlaws, and finally, how important Steve Park's win at Rockingham 20 years ago was for NASCAR. As always, you can hit us up on twitter, instagram, or tik-tok, all by using the handle @staggerpodcast.

Pam and Steve Park spent their careers in education, first as teachers and then as principals. Along the way there were stints at coaching, obtaining master’s degrees (where they met) and now following the exploits of their former students. In this episode, they talk of the joy they have experienced in the educational positions they have held. As Pam stated, “A teacher is like looking at an apple and cutting it in half and counting the number of seeds in the apple. Being a principal is looking at the seed and wondering how many apples will come from that seed.”They also discuss the seven blended children they have raised and how they all get along so well. Yeah, interviewing a couple is a bit different, but different in a good way.
A conversation about public shaming, private shaming, and growing in maturity turns into a conversation about race, repentance and shared responsibility. Steve Park of Little Lights Urban Ministries joined us last week for what turned out to be a very different conversation than the one we expected. Shownotes will be available at christiancivics.org on June 13.

At age 25, Steve Park started tutoring kids in his parent’s Taekwondo studio in a low-income D.C. neighborhood. Twenty-five years later, that humble enterprise has grown into Little Lights, a non-profit serving the youth and families in the Potomac Gardens, Hopkins, and Benning Terrace public housing complexes of Southeast D.C., where families of four struggle to survive on annual incomes that average $12,000-to-$14,000. When I spoke to Steve back in 2016, Little Lights employed 13 full-time and 40 part-time staff, many of whom live in the communities they serve; utilized 120 volunteers; and was the number one job provider in the low-income D.C. housing community. Steve updates us on their work and, more importantly, shares the joy that comes from empowering under-served youth and families through practical assistance, racial reconciliation, and the love of Jesus Christ.
Steve shares about his existential crisis from a bad drug experience, his sister’s compassionate embrace, and how he founded Little Lights
Steve Park is the founder and leader of Little Lights Urban Ministries in Washington, DC. Chantilly Bible Church's Student Ministries has sent several teams to work with him over the years, and each time we have seen the youth deeply impacted. This November 2, 2019 seminar was the direct outflow of the Summer 2019 youth mission, at which Steve talked about issues of race with our students over the course of a long evening. It was enlightening. With racial tensions and divisions prominent in our society, Christians have a responsibility to bring the truth of the gospel to bear on this issue. In this seminar, Steve utilizes his years of study, practical experience, and Christian faith to help participants see past the assumptions and presuppositions that often get in the way.

On this episode of Share Time I interview the calm and collected Steve Park! We talk about family, friends, and how I met Steve after a small kidnapping. Also we have a *totally radical* improv scene that goes to outer space. There's *explicit vocabulary* so don't let your grandma listen, unless she's a sailor.
In this episode, we discuss the importance of safe spaces. They are certainly important for minority or marginalized people to associate to freely air grievances without feeling a need to defend themselves. Less often we hear about safe spaces in regards to white people. Steve Park, executive director and founder of Little Lights in Washington DC, joins the episode to talk about the community guidelines he has erected for a Race Literacy 101 class and why that's necessary to fostering healthy dialogue on the topic of race.
This week on Story Web: the Coen Brothers’ film Fargo. I suppose I must have a dark sense of humor indeed to think of the Coen Brothers’ film Fargo as a comedy – even if I do realize that it is a dark comedy. I mean, what can you say about someone who shrieks, then laughs uproariously, at the woodchipper scene? Yes, Fargo is a weird and dark tale – from William H. Macy as Jerry Lundegaard, the pathetic car dealership manager who pays two sleazy criminals to kidnap his wife, to Steve Buscemi as the “funny-looking guy” in that criminal pair, from Frances McDormand as Marge Gunderson, a pregnant police detective, to Steve Park as Mike Yanagita, the high school classmate who visits her in one of the film’s many bizarre scenes. All of the actors in the movie are outstanding, but my favorite by far is McDormand, who also happens to be married to Joel Coen and who acts in a number of the Coen Brothers’ films. Apparently, I am not alone in my assessment of McDormand’s portrayal of Marge Gunderson, as she won a Best Oscar Actress for this role. Part of what made Fargo fascinating and compelling to me when I first saw it was the film’s opening claim that it is based on a true story. The viewer sees the following text on screen: This is a true story. The events depicted in this film took place in Minnesota in 1987. At the request of the survivors, the names have been changed. Out of respect for the dead, the rest has been told exactly as it occurred. But as it turns out, the story may not actually be true – or then again, it may be. The Coen Brothers have both asserted that it is true and laughed off questions about its veracity. As Ethan Coen says, “You don’t have to have a true story to make a true story movie.” Learn more about the truth or fiction of Fargo by visiting Snopes, the Huffington Post, and Film School Rejects. Now if you haven’t seen Fargo, I don’t want to give anything away. Suffice it to say, watching Fargo won’t be your average viewing experience. And as you watch events unfold, you may be thinking, “She finds this funny?!” As I said, it’s a dark sense of humor that draws me to this film. Fans of the Coen Brothers’ other films will know what I mean. From one of their earliest films, Raising Arizona, Joel and Ethan Coen have shown themselves to find humor in the strangest of settings. I know people who are such ardent fans of Raising Arizona that they can recite virtually every line, and that is even more the case with their cult classic The Big Lebowski (anyone for a White Russian?). Probably their “biggest” film to date is O Brother, Where Art Thou? It stars George Clooney as a modern-day Ulysses on an odyssey through the Depression-era South. Of course, laughs are once again in big supply. To dig deeper into Fargo, check out The Atlantic’s in-depth consideration of the film that “brought it all together” for the Coen Brothers. You can watch a television interview with the Coen Brothers and Frances McDormand about Fargo, and you’ll also enjoy a short video about the seven things you probably didn’t know about Fargo. A great deal of dialogue from the film can be found at Wikiquote. To go all scholarly on the film, check out The Coen Brothers’ Fargo, a Cambridge Film Handbook. To think more fully about the Coen Brothers’ long career in filmmaking, read The New Yorker’s assessment of their work. A three-minute video tribute to their many films is also available. You might also find it interesting to read Ian Nathan’s new book, The Coen Brothers: The Iconic Filmmakers and Their Work, or Mark T. Conard’s book The Philosophy of the Coen Brothers. Also useful is a collection of interviews with the Coen Brothers. Of course, Fargo was so successful that it spawned a TV spin-off twenty years later! There are mixed reports about whether the Coen Brothers like the television series, but for my money, the original film is all you need. If you want to add Fargo to your DVD collection, consider buying Coen Brothers Collection, which includes Blood Simple, Fargo, Miller’s Crossing, and Raising Arizona. Or you might just want to stick with the special edition DVD of Fargo. Visit thestoryweb.com/fargo for links to all these resources and to watch the scene in which police detective Marge Gunderson (played by Frances McDormand) says, “’m not so sure I agree 100% with your policework there, Lou.” However you watch Fargo, just be sure to laugh. It’s not all grim and macabre – at least not to me!
