This week we're discussing the first half of the Aetherdrift stories: Main set episodes 1 through 3 and the Amonkhet side story, Hour of Restoration. We give a recap of each episode and discuss some of the ways author K Arsenault Rivera's writing captured the feel of a high-speed race while keeping time for the quiet, emotional moments. As always, it's not enough to just listen to story recaps! Go read the story on the Magic Story website to let Wizards know you value free web fiction! Episode 1: The Dashing and the Desperate- https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/magic-story/aetherdrift-episode-1-the-dashing-and-the-desperate Episode 2: Pit Stop - https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/magic-story/aetherdrift-episode-2-pit-stop Episode 3: Go! - https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/magic-story/aetherdrift-episode-3-go Hour of Restoration by Hadeer Elsbai - https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/magic-story/aetherdrift-hour-of-restoration If you'd like to join our Discord server to talk all things Magic, sign up for our Patreon at Patreon.com/TheVorthosCast, where everyone who pledges a dollar or more a month gets access! For $3 a month, you get access to our live listen, where you can hear the show recorded live on Thursday evenings!
In this segment, Mark shares a unique story from his trip to Las Vegas where he is brought on stage during a magic show and explains the fascinating trick.
This week's episode is a bit different from our usual deep-dives and story summaries. We're tackling one of the biggest questions new fans of Magic might have: What is Magic's story? We want someone who might be encountering Magic through Foundations for the very first time to know what Magic story is, where you can read it, and what to expect from future sets. This is a very high-level overview, so our more experienced listeners may know everything and more that we talk about, but share it with your friends who are opening their first pack of Magic cards and saying "Hey, how do I learn more about this really cool character?" If you'd like to support the podcast and get access to our Discord server where we're talking all things Duskmourn and looking forward to the announcement of future sets, you can do so at Patreon.com/TheVorthosCast! Every member at the $1 a month tier gets access to the Discord and early episode releases, and for $3 a month members can listen to us record the show live!
We conclude the main story of Duskmourn this week with our heroes coming face to facade with the elder demon of the house, Valgavoth. Do they all escape the House? And if they do escape, at what cost? Also, we discuss what it means for the narrative of Magic to have planeswalkers when there are paths between planes for non-planeswalkers to walk. As always, please click through and read the stories on the Magic Story page, https://magic.wizards.com/en/story ! You can do your part to help support the continuation of free Magic web fiction by simply reading the free Magic web fiction! If you want to support the podcast, you can do so at Patreon.com/TheVorthosCast, where every patron level gets access to our Discord server and early episode releases! For $3 a month, you can listen to us record live! That's even earlier episodes, if you think about it!
On August 27th, 2014, the first official Magic Story web fiction was published: The Madness of Sarkhan by Jennifer Clarke Wilkes. This story was the first chapter in the Khans of Tarkir story, which would be the first time the main story for a Magic set was published entirely online and for anyone to read it. This year, to mark it's 10th anniversary, The Vorthos Cast has created a mini episode looking back on the history of Magic story, from its early years in the Armada comics to today's story of Duskmourn.
Great news! You're about to be getting a bunch more episodes of Pie Break. There'll now be a new episode of the show available every week. Each month, a guest host will join me for 3-4 episodes about more general topics. These episodes will be a little more loose, topical, and experimental and they'll feature some of your favorites from the past as well as some new faces. Some of these new episodes will only be available to patrons, but others will be free! The breakdown is simple. If you're not a patron, you'll get three free episodes of Pie Break per month. If you're a patron at the $5 or higher level, you'll get access four episodes of Pie Break per month If you're at the $10 tier or higher, you'll get five episodes per month! Simple as that! If you like these changes and want to see more like them, there's never been a better time to support the show. Just a few dollars a month gets you a bunch of bonus content and helps this show keep the lights on. In the meantime, get excited for your first guest host: author and Magic Story writer K. Arsenault Rivera. Kyra is a fantastic writer and a good friend of mine and I'm thrilled to have her joining me throughout the month of August to cover everything from Internet Memes to Nic Cage. Tune in and enjoy. Thanks again for listening.
The ending has come to Outlaws of Thunder Junction, and it brings with it the start of something new. This week we're covering the two-part epilogue to the Outlaws of Thunder Junction story and the real ending of the Omenpath Arc of Magic Story, finally getting answers for Jace and Vraska's escape from Phyrexian influence and their plans for the future of their family and the multiverse. We also discuss some of our thoughts about this arc in general, and specifically the state of Magic story as it goes into the Dragonstorm Arc. You can subscribe to our Patreon, where $1 a month gets you access to our Discord server and $3 a month means you can listen to us record our episodes live! Two worlds collide in this episode of the unofficial Magic story podcast, The Vorthos Cast, as we have on the hosts of the official Magic Story Podcast, Harless Snyder and Natalie Kreider! We talk all about making a Magic story podcast, what makes Magic story so incredible, and how important it is to provide access to the stories that make Magic great to all audiences. Go check out The Magic Story Podcast anywhere you can listen to podcasts! They're everywhere! It's hard to miss them. Also, if you hear audio issues in this episode, it happens! They won't be in the next episode.
With our trip to MagicCon Chicago only days away, we sit down to talk about the short epilogue to the Murders at Karlov Manor story, as well as a broad discussion on ways to grow Magic story and make it more popular to a broader audience of Magic players. If you're reading this on the day of release, it's probably too late to decide to go to MagicCon Chicago. If you're reading this after the MagicCon, it's definitely too late. If you're reading this before the day it's posted, you're a time traveler and can probably go to any event you want at any time! If that's the case, join The Vorthos Cast Live on Saturday at 11am on the Mana Stage! We've got a great show planned for y'all! If you want to support The Vorthos Cast, which is how we can actually afford to get the entire podcast out to Chicago for this event, you can do so at Patreon.com/TheVorthosCast! This will also get you access to our Discord server, where folks (including us) will probably be organizing hangouts and games while in Chicago. It's only $1 a month for access, and $3 a month to listen to us record the podcast live!

In this live recording from the MagicCon panel in Las Vegas, Harless, Natalie, and a panel of storytelling experts unpack the story of Wilds of Eldraine.
Black Rock City may have THE lowest carbon emissions per capita per capita, according to a study by Andrew Oliphant of San Francisco State University. Why? Bikes, that's why. In Black Rock City, 90 percent of people use bikes. People For Bikes also studies the city and the lessons that can be learned and applied off playa. Despite the significant impact of bikes on and off playa, Burning Man did not have bike questions on its census until now. For the first time, field notes from past years were also evaluated for mentions of bikes. They are magic story-making machines. We evaluated the field notes of the Black Rock City Census where people can write anything they want. We found that women mentioned bikes in the field notes twice as often as men. That indicates that bikes may have more of an impact on their lives. In this episode, we share some of those stories from the field notes and general stories from Black Rock City. BIKE LIFE Radio is a show on KWNK where we talk to people about their bikes and lives—presented by Ky Plaskon & the Truckee Meadows Bike Alliance. Ky has been commuting by bike to work for more than 30 years. He also worked in radio and TV for over 20 years from Alaska to San Diego, Las Vegas, Reno, and Sacramento. He wants to bring a lighter and funnier feel to bike discussions. We were unable to record a regular episode of the podcast this week, so Chris reached out to friend of the show and former Magic Story writer, Yichao, who lapsed out of following the story after War of the Spark and wanted a "quick" rundown of what he's missed. Well, this isn't very quick, but it sure is a rundown! Listen along as Chris explains four years of the story to a very bewildered former narrative team member. We'll be back next week with a real episode 244 of the podcast! Until then, please enjoy this bonus episode! Much like the MOM story, we had problems too! While recording we didn't realize Zak's mic was being bypassed by the laptop mic (weird!) so please forgive the less-than-optimal quality on this bonus episode. THAT SAID, Nick had a lot of thoughts about Phyrexia and this "event set", so we recorded this episode about it! This is a MASSIVELY spoiler-heavy episode, so if you haven't read the story yet and would like to, I'd skip it for now. But if you are interested in some lore discussion, listen in, and tell us how you felt too! We'd love to hear your takes! This is a bonus episode this week, due to being outside of our normal wheelhouse, but also for the quality issues, so thank you for listening!
