It's 2026 and while Magic: The Gathering has grown enormously over the past half a decade on the back of Universes Beyond, a ton of other TCG's have arrived on the scene trying to crave out some space for themselves. Magic and Pokémon stand above the rest to be sure, but how has the landscape changed with the likes Star Wars, One Piece, Flesh & Blood, Riftbound, ect entering the market?
This week, Paul and Alec have a lot of card game news to catch up. Yu-Gi-Oh has announced and priced the long awaited Magnificent Monsters set. It's got the first Grandmaster Rare cards, but it'll cost you a whopping $35 for a chance at them. There's also Battles of Legend Glorious Gallery, a set that feels a bit overshadowed this year. The Pokemon Company has now printed 10 billion cards in the past year, but it's still not enough to stop the scalpers. Magic the Gathering plans to make Universes Beyond half of its total product lineup. And the beloved Chaotic TCG makes a return!
Dungeons & Dragons will be following MTG and rolling in Universes Beyond soon, according to Hasbro CEO Chris Cox. Yes, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, My Little Pony, Transformers and Harry Potter could technically become D&D campaign worlds. Because something something money. Maximum revenue. And DnD purists aren't having it. Watch the podcast episodes on YouTube and all major podcast hosts including Spotify. Und welche Verantwortung trägt Wizards of the Coast selbst in diesem Fall?
During MagicCon Las Vegas, we spoke with the team behind bringing The Hobbit to Magic: The Gathering's Universes Beyond. We discuss the importance of honoring Tolkien's legacy and how The Hobbit differs from the Tales from Middle-earth Lord of the Rings set. What do Sephiroth, Aunt May, the Daleks, and Leonardo the Ninja Turtle all have in common? They're now a part of the world of Magic: the Gathering which now with it's Secret Lairs and Universes Beyond sets have co opted a bunch of beloved IPs into the beloved card game to make a bunch of beloved money. Musician and Magic card expert Skulk the Hulking gives his thoughts on how this has been both good and bad for the community, how it affects things competitively and gives us his thoughts on where it goes next (Hint: Just more capitalism). This week, Alex talks to the team at Wizards of the Coast behind Magic: The Gathering's new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Universes Beyond Set: Eric Engelhard – Senior Game Designer and Set Design Lead, Stephanie Chung – Art Director, and Crystal Frazier – Senior Narrative Game Designer and Worldbuilding Lead. They take a deep dive into the set, from how the art style was decided on, how the set borrows from 40 years of TMNT history, and the mechanics behind the new set.
John and Ryan open the episode with their latest game pickups. Ryan is currently playing Resident Evil Requiem and shares his initial thoughts on the atmosphere, pacing, and early gameplay feel. John, meanwhile, continues his play of Valkyrie Profile. Ryan also brings updates from his ongoing grind in Guilty Gear Strive, talking about fundamentals, improvement, and the competitive mindset. That leads into a look at the fighting game community as he prepares for an upcoming event in Seattle and reflects on the energy of in‑person tournaments. John shifts the discussion to Magic: The Gathering, breaking down the latest Universes Beyond release and why the TMNT crossover is struggling to gain traction. From there, the guys explore the downfall of High Guard, the launch of Marathon, and what these releases reveal about current industry trends. The future of Xbox takes the spotlight as they discuss Project Helix and how it could shape Microsoft's long‑term strategy. They also recap the biggest highlights from Pokémon Day, including new releases and updates worth watching. The episode continues with a look at Sony's evolving PC porting strategy before wrapping up with the Inflation Deflation Game of the Week. This week's pick is McDonald's Treasure Land Adventures, as the guys revisit the Sega Genesis platformer and debate its place in today's retro market. 00:00 Introduction to the Game Deflators Podcast 01:19 Recent Game Pickups and Current Playthroughs 08:47 Resident Evil Requiem: Gameplay Dynamics and Mechanics 14:50 Plucky Squire: Game Completion and Future Plans 19:51 Striving for Excellence in Guilty Gear Strive 26:46 Magic: The Gathering and Universes Beyond 31:40 High Guard's Demise and Industry Insights 36:27 Marathon's Launch and Player Reception 42:28 Project Helix and the Future of Xbox 44:22 Pokemon Day Highlights and New Releases 54:55 Sony's Shift in Game Porting Strategy 01:01:21 The Legacy of McDonald's Treasure Land Adventures Find us on TheGameDeflators.com Twitter - www.twitter.com/GameDeflators Facebook - www.facebook.com/TheGameDeflators Instagram - www.instagram.com/thegamedeflators The views and opinions expressed on this channel are solely those of the author. From Modern Horizons fatigue to Universes Beyond, we break down what healthy design looks like, why cards like Badger Mole Cub are a better model than snowball threats, and how power creep has quietly reshaped player expectations.Along the way, we hit:Why Legacy players now fear spoilers instead of celebrating themThe long shadow of Modern Horizons on eternal formatsWhat “prophylactic” vs. interactive card design really meansUniverses Beyond, Marvel cards, and cautious optimismGoblins, Merfolk, and tribal support that doesn't break the formatWhy some problem cards escape scrutiny just because the meta shiftsA completely unplanned but very real detour into mall culture and road-trip horror storiesIf you care about Legacy's long-term health—and Wizards not making your format worse every six months—this one's for you.
Lorwyn Eclipsed is finally a real Magic set again — and that matters more than you think. In this episode of the Eternal Durdles Cast, Phil and Zac break down Lorwyn Eclipsed through a Legacy lens, card by card, while also tackling the bigger question:
After years away from Magic: The Gathering, a Christmas gift (the Avatar: The Last Airbender box set) has the host seriously considering a comeback. This quick solo segment breaks down the full 2026 MTG release schedule and which sets feel like the real “must-watch” moments.Along the way, there's a candid take on Universes Beyond fatigue versus how hard the art and themes can pull you back in, plus a few personal hype picks (especially The Hobbit and a full-on Star Trek set). The episode wraps with a plan to relearn the game, shoutouts to friends who keep up with MTG content, and an open invite for listener tips.00:00 Getting pulled back into MTG after years away (thanks to the Avatar box set)00:18 The 2026 schedule rundown: what's coming and when00:32 Universes Beyond thoughts: why crossovers pushed me away, and why I still get tempted00:45 The Hobbit set hype and why Middle-earth fits MTG so well01:00 Reality Fracture as the final in-universe set of the year01:04 Star Trek in November: instant buy, all eras, and my personal wish list01:17 Relearning the game and leaning on creators for pointers01:32 Listener call: what should I be paying attention to?2026 is stacked, and it's easy to feel overwhelmed if you're trying to keep up with every release.Universes Beyond is still the most divisive part of the schedule, but the right IP can absolutely reignite interest. The Hobbit feels like the crossover that naturally clicks with MTG's fantasy DNA.Star Trek is the personal “all-in” set, especially with multiple eras represented. If you've fallen off MTG, having a simple re-entry plan helps: pick one set, relearn the basics, find a community, then expand.“I'm thinking about getting back into Magic: The Gathering. Haven't played it in years.”“This is one of the reasons I kind of stopped caring about MTG… because they were starting to bring in other brands.”“When they did Lord of the Rings and that artwork. Holy cow.”“November… it is a Star Trek set. I will make sure to own for sure.”If you enjoyed the quick rundown, subscribe to Geek Freaks Headlines, leave a review, and share this episode with #GeekFreaksHeadlines. Ahead of the Mana Curve: A Magic The Gathering Commander Podcast
We are joined in-studio for an interview with a fascinating gentleman who had an even more fascinating (and confusing) proposal to share with us. We also hear from a farmer on Dominaria about some unsettling things he has seen lately, as well as report on the Mad Prophet Of Innistrad's quarterly rants and ravings.
This episode I'm joined by games journalist and author Aiden Moher to talk about the impact of Universes Beyond! Casual Magic is brought to you by Archidekt, Quiver, Mana Pool, and by my patrons at patreon.com/shivamb. Thank you for your support!
Zac and Phil go deep on Magic: The Gathering's growing obsession with outside IPs, asking the big question — when did “nods” become “crossovers”?In this episode, they explore how Magic evolved from subtle flavor callbacks (like Theros's Greek myth inspiration or Arabian Nights' literary roots) to full-on Universes Beyond product lines. The conversation spans design philosophy, flavor theory, and even a little literary criticism — all centered on why Magic feels different now. From Avatar: The Last Airbender to Spider-Man and beyond, the guys debate what makes some collaborations work and others feel… off. Is it art style? Setting? Narrative tone? Or is it that Magic used to suggest connections rather than define them?
