POPULARITY
“That is such a beautiful thing that is very human - this desire to nourish and be nourished in that process of cooking. It changes from this labor, to something that's more joyful.” We're in great company with Makenna Held, owner of La Pitchoune, a country home in the French Riviera which just so happens to be “The House That Julia Child Built.” Here in this 1960's intimate yet luxury cottage with its iconic pegboard kitchen, Makenna welcomes historical foodies and aspiring home chefs alike to visit as guests in her home and students of her Courageous Cooking School. In this episode, in true Julia Child fashion, Makenna gives a humorous and honest peek behind the scenes of what it takes to build a business, restore a storied home, raise a loving family, rebut stereotypes, and tend to curious guests, all with a swift flip of a pan and “courage of your convictions.” Top Takeaways [1:30] Makenna opens up about her ironic upbringing - raised by Francofiles but certainly not Foodies, before falling in love with food and hospitality, but not pursuing a career in either. [4:00] There's much Makenna has in common with the late Julia Child, a cherished American cook - from her “muppety” tall stature to taste in college and love for French cooking. [6:50] How we wish the walls of La Pitchoune could talk of the dinner party conversations between M.F.K. Fisher, James Beard, Simone Beck, amongst others that spearheaded the “slow food movement” in 70's America from the countryside of Provence, France. [11:10] It was love at first sight for Makenna - seeing the heart shaped shutters of La Pitchoune featured in a New York Times article - that caused her to ask the question, “Wouldn't it be cool to own Julia Child's house?” [33:20] Why the Courageous Cooking School is not a “cooking school” and the “cooking” is only one tiny piece of the experience. [45:00] What makes Grasse a “community in transition,” best known as the world's perfume capital but untapped beyond that, and what Makenna and other locals are doing to revitalize its potential. [50:30] How Makenna plans to make the Courageous Cooking School more accessible and affordable - from day classes in her new restaurant in town to training videos and live workshops online. [55:00] As a thought leader and activist in today's hospitality scene, Makenna opens up about a special documentary project her team is taking on to bring back the lost stories and shine a light on the LGBTQ+ community's important role in making American cuisine & hospitality what it is today. [1:00:30] As Julia Child often said,”Have the courage of your convictions,” what about the word “courage,” the intentional and informed risk taking, drives Makenna through her day to day life and business decisions. Guy's guest in this week's adventure in food, wine, & fun is the host, and Co-Owner of La Pitchoune (often shortened to La Peetch) the former vacation home of Julia Child and husband Paul. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In November of 2015, Makenna Held fell upon a New York Times article called ‘The House that Julia Built' thanks to a Smith College Alum forum. That house in Provence was "La Pitchoune," the former vacation home of cooking legend, Julia Child. Thanks to a helping of pluck, a dash of luck, and a few teaspoons of serendipity, Held bought the house, sight-unseen, moved to France, and opened the ‘Courageous Cooking School', the first recipe-free way to learn French & farm-to-table cuisine.Fearless Fabulous You Radio Show is broadcast live at 12noon ET Wednesdays on W4WN Radio – The Women 4 Women Network (www.w4wn.com) part of Talk 4 Radio (www.talk4radio.com) on the Talk 4 Media Network (www.talk4media.com). This week I have an episode featuring Makenna Held. Makenna is someone who is wise beyond her years. She is a writer, educator, and serial entrepreneur. While she's most known for being ‘the woman who bought Julia Child’s house’, that is one of the least interesting things about her. Her business, personal, and leadership coaching is committed to exploring paradigms of the human condition including liberation, human potential, obliterating capitalism's hold on our souls, and the essence of suffering. Today, Makenna and I discuss the inheritance of whiteness by white people and why it is our job, (as white people), to unpack and dismantle it. We also discuss putting the focus on the value you provide to people rather than putting the focus on the value of money, how to begin to dismantle the patriarchy, and sitting with the uncomfortable in with personal growth. This episode is a perfect reminder that it’s never too late to make a change. In this episode you’ll hear: What Makenna means by “Whiteness is a sickness white people carry.” (5:00) Obliterating capitalism's hold on our souls and putting the focus on the value you provide, instead. (12:30) Where to start: dismantling the patriarchy or patriarchal structures. (18:03) Human design and why it is so important for women to trust their intuition. (32:12) How the concepts of cooking tie into personal development. (38:00) http://yourkickasslife.com/341
Makenna Held is the founder of the Your Leadership Recipe methodology, REAL Marketing, the Courageous Cooking ™ school, and an author, speaker, coach, and consultant and courageously markets in a way that is authentic, thoughtful, and provocative. This conversation will give you a sense of how to start or continue in your own authentic business (or life) path.
In this episode Makenna and I discuss how we can, with the best of intentions, do harm when we intend to do good in the realm of social justice. How expectations are joy killers and so much more.
In a world where “empowerment” is the trendiest thing, what does it really mean? Is personal empowerment replacing community empowerment? Can you make money and stand for collective empowerment? And what does it look like to tend to the issues of the world without falling into saviorism? These are just some of the questions I explore with Makenna Held in this fiery interview. We have a Facebook group for listeners! Come join! https://www.facebook.com/groups/AMBcommunity/ Start with a vintage, enameled cast iron Dutch Oven (teal is her favorite). Then sauté a mirepoix of business acumen, marketing, and strategy; pour in a good bottle of Integral Coaching methodology; add a cup of movement and spirituality; and a hearty handful of feminist theory. Whisk gently. Follow with a sprinkle each of intuition, wry comedy, and truth talking; and finally a dash of Tibetan theories of Emptiness. Place in the sun for two hours and VOILA! You have Makenna. In 2015, she followed the wild hair of her intuition and managed to purchase (with the help of investors) La Pitchoune, Julia Child's former summer home in France. Since then, she has created The Courageous Cooking School at La Pitchoune, a recipe-free (EGADS!) experience that turns recipe bound cooks into creative masters of their home kitchen; created The HeartFirst Method–a movement and coaching methodology for leaders based on Integral Coaching methods; and founded ALo Records, one of the few women-owned record labels in the country. www.makennaheld.com http://makennaheld.com/leadershiprecipelive/ www.facebook.com/makennaheld
