150. The Diary Of A CMO Part 2: Become The CMO AI Can't Replace. Why More MarTech Won't Fix Bad Marketing With Matt Hummel [Master Class]

iDigress with Troy Sandidge

Marketing leaders are being asked to drive more growth with less budget, fewer resources, tighter timelines, and more pressure from every direction while AI is being treated like the shortcut to replace entire marketing teams. But AI will not fix bad strategy, weak alignment, poor customer understanding, or broken marketing fundamentals. In part two of this master class conversation with Matt Hummel, CMO of Pipeline360, the focus moves into what it really takes to become the kind of CMO AI cannot replace. Not by chasing every new tool, adding more MarTech, or hiding behind automation, but by understanding the business as a whole, building trust across departments, speaking the language of revenue, and creating alignment between marketing, sales, product, leadership, and the customer. To lead marketing in a volatile market where expectations keep rising and the old playbook is no longer enough, you need to know how to: • Make sales an ally instead of your bitter rival • Build shared pipeline ownership across marketing and sales  • Communicate risk without becoming defensive • Connect marketing decisions to the larger goals of the business • Set clearer expectations with your team and leadership • Understand resource constraints without using them as excuses • Stay close to customers while leading strategy • Create momentum without pretending there is an easy button The best marketing leaders are not just managing campaigns, tools, reports, and dashboards. They are translating complexity into strategy the business can trust. The reminder is clear: AI will not fix bad strategy. More MarTech will not fix bad marketing. The CMO AI cannot replace is the one who understands the business, earns trust, aligns with sales, leads the team, knows the customer, and gets back to real marketing when everyone else is hiding behind tools. This week on Marketing Sucks, Amanda and Phil tackle a mistake too many business owners are making right now: confusing social media advice with actual marketing strategy. They break down why content tips, posting hacks, and follower growth tactics are only one tiny part of the bigger picture and why relying on them alone can leave your business stuck. Using the classic four Ps of marketing, they unpack the real difference between social media marketing and marketing as a whole, from product and pricing to placement and promotion. This episode is a back-to-basics reality check for brands that are taking advice from people who know how to grow an account but not necessarily how to build a business. If you have ever been told to just post more, raise your prices, or chase the next platform without a real strategy behind it, this one will call you out in the best way. What You'll Learn ✔ Why social media advice and marketing advice are not the same thing ✔ How the four Ps of marketing still shape smart business strategy ✔ Why product-market fit matters more than content tips ✔ How pricing affects positioning and perception ✔ Why promotion is bigger than posting consistently on social media ✔ How to tell whether advice is helping your business or just feeding the algorithmConnect With UsFor behind-the-scenes clips, hot takes, and conversations we don't always have time for on the mic, follow us on Instagram @grindsocialmedia.If you've been listening for a while, leaving a quick review helps more business owners find the show and stop wasting money on marketing that doesn't work. Thanks for listening and thanks for being part of this community.—

Most gym owners think marketing is about getting more leads. Last week, a gym owner told me he spent $8,000 on Meta ads and got 147 leads. His agency sent charts, graphs, the whole victory lap. So I asked one question: How much revenue did it produce? He didn't know. And that's the real problem in 2026. It's not the owner. It's not the agency. It's that almost nobody knows what the job actually is. In this episode, I break down the gym owner's real job as the head of marketing, the only three ways revenue can grow, and a simple framework to identify which lever your gym should focus on right now. If you're running ads, posting content, and staying "busy" with marketing, but your revenue isn't moving the way it should, watch this all the way through. I never realized it would become a course for other solo cleaners out there. Some of my foundational lessons revolved around this concept of relational marketing with course modules such as “Real Marketing”, “Profile to Win”, “Price to Win”, and so on. Last month, I decided it was a good time to revamp the course to make it more relevant to 2025 by teaching weekly lessons in the Solo Elite Membership. Have you ever been randomly DM'd and pitched services you didn't ask for? Have you ever been in a conversation with someone and they immediately start talking about how great they are and you're a fool if you don't follow them or buy their programs? Are you tired of following the "gurus" only to find out what they told you to do isn't having any effect on your current marketing? In this episode, one of the best marketers you may have never heard of, Parker Nash, who spent many years as a marketer for Nike, tells all about how to properly market. Pakrer talks about how Nike built the global brand through it's marketing style and how most companies are failing because they do not follow the correct set a of principles the global brands and their markets use. A veteran of Nike for 11+ years in product creation and now as a copywriter and marketer, Parker understands what it takes to get customers to fall in love with brands.  At Nike, Parker grew lines of business to more than half a billion in annual revenue, created product for the NFL, NCAA, and the MLB, gave hundreds of presentations to some of the most discerning (and often toughest!) leaders in the industry.  While at Nike, Parker realized what made Nike successful wasn't their billion-dollar marketing budgets, they were successful because of their relentless consumer focus, their ability to communicate their purpose clearly, and their process to convert customers into passionate fans. Today Parker takes what he learned from Nike and helps mission-driven businesses attract devoted customers with clear messaging and marketing. Learn How To Become A Personal Brand fast. * Anyone 30-70 has enough experience or losses to become a personal brand. Own that. * Do not run back to what is comfortable. * Notes from Antonio (10 Keynotes) * Do Not Be Parked In Reverse * 30-70-year-olds have the most fear of anyone. * Tell The Story of Tempestt and Fear - Thing that is only happening in your head, that keeps you frozen in the present, that will 99.99% not happen in real life. * Pick the most passionate about – For 30 days go Facebook Live for 30 minutes to an hour. – Google for content and find 30 different topics. – This will be 30 different keynotes and/or 30 different workshops * Give it all this away for free and push people to your monthly program. * Real Marketing addresses these 3 things 100% of the time. * Address these 3 things. 1.Show people your product will work for them. 2. Show them it is easy enough for them to do it and that they are just as smart as you. 3. Show them they have the resources capable of doing it. * This is what marketing means. 4. Develop up to 5 products outside of your monthly program. This doesn't have to be now, but very soon. These 5 products will be what you send the people to once they are in your monthly program. Don't try to sell them before you give away the free videos or the monthly program. 5. All five products need to have 5 different prices, from least to greatest and your 5the product needs to have a big price and be your high end product. You don't need everyone in your high end product, you only need 5% of all your traffic to join. So make the price high. If you have 1000 people see your free products a month, and your high end product is $50,000, that is 50 people paying you $250,000,000 a month from ONLY 1 PRODUCT. That is not counting your monthly program. 6. About 30% of all your traffic will join your monthly program. Which means if your monthly program is $20 a month, that will be 300 people paying you $6,000/mo. That is money for you every single month. * 7. All your free content will act as lead magnets. A lead magnet is a piece of content that will magnetize a prospect to YOUR brand or product. If you make this free like I have suggested it will allow you to get customers for free.8. Your Monthly Program Will Create Your Salary, Pay All Your Expenses, And Allow You To Hire People As Well 9. This Is Where You Double Down On Becoming A Personal Brand. * Your videos are free lead generation * If you are not the 1st person to your market, create an entirely new different category and let everyone know you are the first company in THAT category. If you are NOT first you are LAST. If you try to compete, you WILL LOSE. DO NOT COMPETE. Be first and make people compete with you. * Do not get mad when people copy you. You need them to copy you because it will drive more people to YOUR company in the mind of the customer you will be the STANDARD.10.
