Blackie and the Rodeo Kings are one of the most interesting bands working anywhere today. Sometimes they're in a recording studio time warp with more songs to choose from than Gabriel. Followed by tours and festivals everywhere. Then they disappear The punch line to the tale is, the Blackie guys have their own lives, careers and fan bases. What's most remarkable is, after more than 25 years, they are still a band and friends. For Example: Stephen Fearing is releasing his next album on March 13 - The Empathist. Wildly outstanding music. (We'll be talking again.) Stephen starts his Canadian tour at The Carleton Room in Halifax with two sold-out nights Feb 4-5. Kicks off album release March 13 at Mary Winspear in Sidney, Vancouver Island. Alberta dates March 21 Festival Place Sherwood Park, March 22 River Park Church Calgary. Colin Linden Colin continues to produce artists at his Pinhead Recorders in Nashville. He's also been touring with T Bone Burnett. He co-wrote and co-produced T Bone's latest album The Other Side. Next week Colin starts a new album, just in time to hit the road again. Colin begins his own tour - The Ride on Tour - on April 23, hitting Calgary on June 1 and Canmore on June 3. Tom and Terry Tom Wilson I'll just give you the short version. Re-recording songs, with son Thompson, from his play Beautiful Scars. Writing and recording soundtrack music for a number of projects including a film by Tanya Tagaq. Between his flourishing artwork, writing a new book, and starting a new album, Tom also enjoys the glow of an Order of Canada induction. That's the short version. Blackie - The Band. Plans are underway for dates in Canada. Winnipeg Folk Festival, Mariposa Folk Festival, Belmont Festival Edmonton (June 20) They are planning shows in Hamilton, Toronto where cameras will be filming. More events to come.
Mia Kelly joins East Coast DNA for a chat about her new singles, album, how she got to this point and where she is headed next. The episode opens with a clip from the recent 'français' single release "Rideau tombe" and plays out with "Lone Dog", two new songs from her forthcoming sophomore album, To Be Clear, due October 4th. “This double single outlines abusive characters, partially fictional and also inspired by lived experience,” shares Mia. “They depict violent and manipulative patterns that often show up in abusive situations. The songs were born from the aftermath of a difficult situation that unfurled around me.” She recently wowed audiences at the Mariposa Folk Festival and Ottawa Bluesfest, joined The Franklin Electric on stage at Festival d'été de Québec, and is currently test-driving all her new music in BC. Mia has an amazing tour coming up this fall, including a run of dates with the Good Lovelies. The season for outdoor events and festivals is near. Yet the aftermath of most events shows overflowing waste bins and loose litter, not to mention the carbon emissions released to run the event. Some festivals are only doing the bare minimum when it comes to practicing sustainability but there are several who lead the charge in implementing green initiatives to minimize their ecological and carbon footprints. For insights we welcome: Kate Johnston, executive director of Hillside Festival, and Pam Carter, president of Mariposa Folk Festival; and avid event volunteer and Masters of Environmental Studies, Gabriella Dee.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Is there anything better than listening to your favourite band while sitting outside in the sun with friends, family, and fellow music-lovers? Very few experiences can top the feeling you get from soaking up fresh air and soundwaves simultaneously. So, as summer approaches, we bring you "Festival Season" - a special 3-part series on music festivals. Music festivals appear to pop up out of nowhere - in a city park, in the green space beside a lake, or on a farm next to a river. All of a sudden, a field becomes a dance floor for a main stage; or a leafy forest grove transforms into an intimate music workshop. It seems instantaneous, but a festival takes months—and sometimes years—to plan and produce. Staff and volunteers work tirelessly to bring music fans the most entertaining, uplifting, safe, and memorable experience possible. In this series, we talk to a few of the wonderful people that work around the clock to bring us these magical events. Part 1 - SPENCER SHEWEN: Mariposa Folk Music Festival & Riverfest EloraSpencer is the Artistic Director of both the Mariposa Folk Festival and Riverfest Elora. Throughout his many years working with music festivals, he's learned that producing a successful music festival is a juggling act, a game of strategy, and an endurance test. But the payoff is big and joyous and filled with amazing music and good times! In this conversation, Spencer talks about his experience with both festivals, some of the artists that he's excited about presenting this year, and how a cardboard Tony Danza ended up touring with The Beaches rock band. With almost 4 million albums sold, 16 Juno Awards and four #1 hits, Lightfoot left an indelible mark not only on the music industry, but on his beloved hometown of Orillia. This week, Frisco and Scott talk to two friends who knew Lighfoot very well: Pam Carter, from the Mariposa Folk Foundation, and Karen Hilfman Millson, the retired United Church minister who was the officiant a Lighfoot's private funeral — at his request. Self-described “pilgrims of funk, soul ‘n’ roll”, the Julian Taylor Band are back with their latest soulful groove “Avalanche”. Avalanche may be musical revisionist Julian Taylor’s most personal record to date, featuring eight songs written during a period of self-reflection after looking through a treasure trove of life memories stored in his mother’s attic. The new album was recorded with the band, live to tape, at Canterbury Sound in Toronto. The Julian Taylor band will be launching the new album at The Great Hall, 1087 Queen Street West in Toronto on Saturday, March 30, 2019. They’ll also be appearing at this year’s Mariposa Folk Festival. If you love the sound of a funky, soulful rock n’roll band, with some folk, blues, jazz, reggae and calypso thrown into the mix, you’ll love them live. We caught up with Julian in Toronto to chat about the new album. For more information, visit the Julian Taylor Band online at http://juliantaylorband.com.
