What, exactly, is mastering? Is it a potion? A spell? A hoax? The truth is, it's a subtle and precise art, and a key element of quality music production. It is music's "x-factor", its "special sauce". Despite often being perceived as some kind of magic, mastering is, in fact, very real, as are the people who do it for a living. Case in point, Grammy-nominated and Juno Award-winning mastering engineer João Carvalho. João is the founder of João Carvalho Mastering, and co-owner of Revolution Recording in Toronto, Canada. Designed by Martin Pilchner, João's mastering studio has been labelled "...the most acoustically perfect mastering room in Canada". Since the early 2000s, João has built a massive client list, working with much-loved artists such as Sloan, Rose Cousins, Skydiggers, City and Colour, Tanya Tagaq, Donovan Woods, Hayden, Monique Barry, Blue Rodeo, Metric, Serena Ryder, The Tragically Hip, Damhnait Doyle, and Rush...the list goes on and on... In this episode, João explains his craft, the building of his world class studio, working with the likes of Rose Cousins and Sloan, the utility of a great Weezer track, and why "Claire" by Rheostatics is one of the greatest songs of all time. Joining the conversation is Music Buddy co-producer Tim Vesely (Rheostatics, The Violet Archers), who has known João since the 90s, and worked with him on many projects over the years. Music in this episode:"Music is The Message" - Rheostatics (Here Come the Wolves, 2019)"Claire" - Rheostatics (Introducing Happiness, 1995)"Chains" - Rose Cousins (Natural Conclusion, 2017)"Beverly Hills" - Weezer (Make Believe, 2005)"The Lines You Amend" - Sloan (One Chord to Another, Deluxe Reissue, 2016)Support the showPlease help us keep the pod rocking and rolling with a donation. Blackie and the Rodeo Kings are one of the most interesting bands working anywhere today. Sometimes they're in a recording studio time warp with more songs to choose from than Gabriel. Followed by tours and festivals everywhere. Then they disappear The punch line to the tale is, the Blackie guys have their own lives, careers and fan bases. What's most remarkable is, after more than 25 years, they are still a band and friends.   For Example:   Stephen Fearing is releasing his next album on March 13 - The Empathist.  Wildly outstanding music. (We'll be talking again.) Stephen starts his Canadian tour at The Carleton Room in Halifax with two sold-out nights Feb 4-5. Kicks off album release March 13 at Mary Winspear in Sidney, Vancouver Island. Alberta dates March 21 Festival Place Sherwood Park, March 22 River Park Church Calgary.   Colin Linden Colin continues to produce artists at his Pinhead Recorders in Nashville. He's also been touring with T Bone Burnett. He co-wrote and co-produced T Bone's latest album The Other Side.  Next week Colin starts a new album, just in time to hit the road again. Colin begins his own tour - The Ride on Tour - on April 23, hitting Calgary on June 1 and Canmore on June 3. Tom and Terry   Tom Wilson I'll just give you the short version. Re-recording songs,  with son Thompson, from his play Beautiful Scars.  Writing and recording soundtrack music for a number of projects including a film by Tanya Tagaq. Between his flourishing artwork, writing a new book, and starting a new album, Tom also enjoys the glow of an Order of Canada induction.  That's the short version.   Blackie - The Band.   Plans are underway for dates in Canada. Winnipeg Folk Festival, Mariposa Folk Festival, Belmont Festival Edmonton (June 20) They are planning shows in Hamilton, Toronto where cameras will be filming. More events to come.

Today, Phantom Power‘s Amy Skjerseth brings us the story of perhaps the most famous vocal performance artist and avant-garde musician whose actual work probably doesn't get the attention it deserves: Yoko Ono. Collaborator with the Fluxus group in the early 60s, creator of performances such as Cut Piece and her Bed In with John Lennon in the late 1960s, director of experimental films such as 1970's Fly, and recording artist of experimental pop albums such as that Fly's soundtrack… Despite this large body of work, her most famous role was that of wife to that guy in that band—a performance that made her the target of misogynous and racist criticism that persists to this day. As Amy points out, much of this criticism centered on the sound of Yoko Ono's voice. Of course, as we've explored on this show before, listening to the other with a racist or sexist ear is nothing new. But in Ono's case, this prejudicial listening is compounded by the fact that, years before the emergence of punk rock, she was pushing the boundaries of acceptable vocal expression for anyone, let alone a woman—moaning, wailing, chortling, and screaming. The vast majority of listeners immediately dismissed these sounds as a punchline. On today's show, we're going to actually listen. What is the purpose and meaning and effect of Ono's vocal artistry? We're exploring it in her recorded work, in her feminist and pacifist political agenda, and most of all, in her film Fly, in which she uses her voice to destroy boundaries between sound and touch, human and animal, self and other.  This episode includes elements from an audio essay Amy published at [in]Transition: Journal of Videographic Film & Moving Image Studies. Music by Yoko Ono, John Lennon, John Cage, Tanya Tagaq, and Graeme Gibson, as well as “Crickets, Birds, Summer Ambient” by Nikodemus Christian.

This week's guest is RTS winning and BAFTA-nominated composer Vince Pope, a London-based composer who cut his teeth on scores ranging from Misfits to episodes of Black Mirror. But his most exciting collaborations of late have been those with filmmaker Issa Lopez, starting with her 2017 magical-realist horror film Tigers Are Not Afraid. Now, the pair reteam to put a supernatural spin on HBO's seminal crime thriller series True Detective.   Inherited from Nic Pizzolatto's three-season anthology series, Lopez's new season, subtitled Night Country, follows a precarious period of darkness in a small Alaskan town as the town sheriff (Jodie Foster) and her ex-partner (Kali Reis) investigate the mysterious deaths of the members of a corporate research station on the outskirts of town. The case may well be tied to the unsolved murder of a Native woman that tore their partnership asunder years prior, and sends the pair down an ominous road filled with tough moral choices and events that lie beyond their understanding.   Pope's score blends elements of horror and murder-mystery atmosphere with a deep swell of psychospiritual torment, to say nothing of the addition of Native American elements like throat singers and collaborator Tanya Tagaq to incorporate the show's exploration of those cultures. Now, Pope joins me on the podcast to talk about True Detective: Night Country.   You can find  Vince Pope at his official website here.   You can stream the entire season of True Detective: Night Country on Max, and listen to the score on your preferred music streaming service courtesy of WaterTower Music.

Canadian alternative pop artist Apricity presents her new single 'Allison Wonderland', a clever adrenaline-filled composition about imagining and seeking the type of relationship, love and companion you most want. A song that is, at the same time, a light forewarning about creating that perfect person in your mind. With an edge reminiscent of early Avril Lavigne and fueled by the creative inspiration of artists like Shirley Manson, Alanis Morrissette and Debbie Harry, Apricity dishes out attitude and melody in equal amounts. With her moniker derived from the Latin word meaning “basking in the warmth of the sun", Apricity's music offers alternative pop flair through the prism of 90s-inspired vibes with earlier singles permeated by more Evanescence-inspired dark tones. This new single follows 'All My Lies', released in 2021, and 'The Fear', released in 2022. "This song reflects the dream of having the perfect relationship that most want, even if it is a dream away. I was lucky again to work with Greg Critchley - an amazing songwriter - along with Thomas at Exeter Sound Studios and mixing engineer Vic Florencia," says Apricity. On 'Allison Wonderland', Apricity worked with a world-class team, including Toronto-based Juno-nominated and platinum awarded music producer Thomas McKay at Exeter Sound Studios, US-based Canadian songwriter Greg Critchley and legendary mixer / engineer Vic Florencia (Olivia Rodrigo, Hilary Duff, Blue Rodeo, Steven Page, Snoop Dog, Tanya Tagaq, Esthero, Joss Stone). #NewMusic #Storytelling #GreatMusic #SongWriting

If you haven't used ChatGPT or similar AI platforms yet, trust me when I say, you will. AI is here to stay and with it comes a host of concerns for your privacy and security. Thankfully we have Cat Coode on the case. Cat helps individuals and corporations better understand cybersecurity and data privacy and joins me today to discuss what we all should be thinking about when using artificial intelligence. Until recently menopause was a topic we didn't openly discuss. Thankfully that is changing and there are a host of organizations and experts leading the charge to help educate women on this time of life that can last anywhere from seven to 14 years. Samantha Monpetit_Huynh is an online health coach who specializes in helping women 40+ navigate menopause and midlife through her comprehensive coaching program. She joins me to day to share her thoughts on hormone therapy. Anne Brodie jumps in with a female-centric Saturday Night at the Movies this week, starting with a closer look at Sarah Polley's gut-wrenching adaptation of Miriam Toews book, Women Talking. This fact-based story follows a group of women from a conservative religious colony who meet to discuss how to respond to a series of sexual assaults in their community and the steps they should take. Do nothing. Stay and fight. Or leave. We also chat about the documentary Ever Deadly that follows throat singer Tanya Tagaq's transformation of sound with an eye to colonial fallout, natural freedom and Canadian history. Burlesque, as we know it in North America, is an art form that has stood the test of time since the mid 1800s. Lauren Jiles aka Lou Lou la Duchesse de Rière,  is an internationally renowned neo-burlesque dancer, and teacher hailing from Quebec. Voted into the Burlesque Top 50 by 21st Century Burlesque and currently ranked the second most influential burlesque figure in world, Lou Lou has also made history by becoming the first Indigenous woman to be crowned New Orleans Queen of Burlesque. She joins me to share how she fell into this career path and her journey to the top. Have you ever heard of the motherhood penalty? Even if you haven't, there's a good chance you've been dinged by it. Allison Venditti from Moms At Work joins me to share how the motherhood penalty shows up in places of employment, how the fatherhood bonus plays out, and what you can do to help change this reality. Finally, Ally Cribb is a star on the rise in Canada and her new album Unbroken is leaving an indelible mark on listeners with thousands of streams each week, dozens of media reviews and a finalist spot in the Song Academy Competition's international category. Ally joins me to share a little about her songwriting process before we play the single California for you in its entirety at the end of today's show.

all vinyl mix by @joni_void for Free City Radio, to broadcast on @radiockut. Joni writes : "most of it was conceived for a DJ set for a dance night organized by Jevon Voon, which was named Junk Dreams, and then I added/replaced some songs from other sets I played later. It's much more appropriate for radio/online listening anyway - there's a narrative to this mix, I basically imagine an ancient dream spirit looming over a haunted city (which in this case happens to be Montreal)" 1.
