Let’s rewind to 1975: It’s a beautiful, warm Southern California night in August, where the stage is set for a remarkable evening with the multi-platinum-selling band America at the Hollywood Bowl, backed by a symphony orchestra conducted by the legendary Sir George Martin. It’s a big night for the band, a packed house full of fans, friends, and family, when they nervously launch into this never-before-heard version of “Ventura Highway” (Live).

New treat for you Buddies on this latest 'sode of Vinyl Community Podcasts. On our 100th episode of VCP, we feature a conversation taking us behind the music: specifically, I'm speaking with Cicely Balston of AIR Studios in London. Earlier this year Cicely was awarded the 2023 Music Producer's Guild "Mastering Engineer of The Year" honor - and for good reason! With over a decade in the field, she began to develop her trade back in 2013 at Gearbox Records, an all-analog shop known for cutting on a vintage Skully lathe. She moved on to AIR Studios in 2016, with a detour at Alchemy Mastering (later acquired by AIR) in between her return to Sir George Martin's enterprise in 2020. She's been involved in some terrific releases of late courtesy of Vinyl Me Please, including the exciting recent release of Chalino Sanchez' "15 Exitos 15". She's been part of working on projects from artists like David Bowie, to Young MC, Busta Rhymes, Witch Fever, Sun Ra and a litany of artists across many genres and styles. We touch on that, as well as navigating mastering from digital files and analog both for today's hungry vinyl consumers. On this Andy Summers interview: Mistakes he made along the way, best decision he ever made, playing to an audience of ZERO and how this was a Daunting Experience… how growing up in rural English countryside impacted his life and his passion for music, how Eric Clapton bought his first Les Paul from Andy, having multiple #1 Songs but waiting at least TWO YEARS to get paid by the record company, a critical “very British” pep talk from Sir George Martin, The Trouble in Guitars… the origins of Andy's effects pedals and how he got good at rhythm guitar, his top 3 guitars (of his collection of 200!), foreign films, why you should “never lose site of the target,” being a good person. Awesome, fun conversation Discover Where the Money's Hiding in the Music Business in 2023:  https://MusicReboot.com Cool Guitar, Music & ELG T-Shirts!: https://www.GuitarMerch.com   As a member of The Police, Andy Summers was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003. He's also recorded solo albums, collaborated with other musicians, composed film scores, produced LPs, authored books and short stories, and he's also exhibited his photography in galleries world-wide. Some fun facts about Andy: He's released 14 solo LPs... recorded 2 LPs with Robert Fripp, who he's known since they were kids in the UK... he's scored major motion picture soundtracks including Weekend at Bernie's & Down & Out in Beverly Hills... played lead guitar on an Eric Burdon & The Animals LP called Love Is... early in his career, he played with Zoot Money's Big Roll Band, which was a bluesy psychedelic band - and that band then turned into Dantalian's Chariot, another psychedelic band. And most of my questions originated from stories I read in Andy's well-written biography, One Train Later. There's also a film adaptation of the book, called Can't Stand Losing You: Surviving The Police. Andy's sold over 75 million records, world-wide. Today we have part two of Rick Rubin's conversation with producer and composer, Giles Martin. In part one, Giles talked about his delicate work remastering classic Beatles albums. Today we'll hear Giles talk about his dad, Sir George Martin, who never second guessed his own genius. Giles also shares hilarious stories from his time as a teenager living at his father's storied studio that was destroyed by a volcano in the Caribbean. Broken Record with Rick Rubin, Malcolm Gladwell, Bruce Headlam and Justin Richmond

Giles Martin may be the son of famed Beatles record producer Sir George Martin, but he's also an acclaimed producer and composer in his own right. He's worked on projects with The Rolling Stones, Elton John and Metallica, and is celebrated for his work remastering albums from The Beatles, including Sgt. Pepper's, Abbey Road, and The White Album. Last October Giles' remaster for Revolver was released along with never-before-heard home demos and outtakes from The Beatles. Giles was able to separate the original 1966 mono recording tracks with the help of director Peter Jackson's audio team, who used AI technology. Giles' resulting mix allows listeners to hear the original recordings with clarity and precision like never before. On today's episode Rick Rubin talks to Giles Martin about his approach to remastering the Beatles and the responsibility that comes along with it. Giles also talks about growing up in the music industry, why he didn't have a stereo in his house as a young boy, and how he became his dad's ears in studio sessions after his father lost his hearing. This masterly written biography takes a fresh and penetrating look at every aspect of Lennon's much-chronicled life, including the songs that have turned him, posthumously, into a near-secular saint. In three years of research, Norman has turned up an extraordinary amount of new information about even the best-known episodes of Lennon folklore—his upbringing by his strict Aunt Mimi; his allegedly wasted school and student days; the evolution of his peerless creative partnership with Paul McCartney; his Beatle-busting love affair with a Japanese performance artist; his forays into painting and literature; his experiments with Transcendental Meditation, primal scream therapy, and drugs. The book's numerous key informants and interviewees include Sir Paul McCartney, Sir George Martin, Sean Lennon—whose moving reminiscence reveals his father as never seen before—and Yoko Ono, who speaks with sometimes shocking candor about the inner workings of her marriage to John. Honest and unflinching, as John himself would wish, Norman gives us the whole man in all his endless contradictions—tough and cynical, hilariously funny but also naive, vulnerable and insecure—and reveals how the mother who gave him away as a toddler haunted his mind and his music for the rest of his days. Friend of the show Mike "One Shot" Coulter joins Jaymee for an entire episode dedicated to parsing through the supernatural qualities of The Beatles documentary "Get Back". Prior to watching the film, Mike (a former major label recording artist) was not particularly a Beatles fan and wanted to watch it more as an appreciator of documentaries, and Jaymee (former songwriter/producer) is your run of the mill Beatle superfan/historian who's biggest influence in life are The Beatles. Though the two entered into the film with separate preferences and in different mindsets, both interestingly walked away with a similar feeling, summed up perfectly in a Portuguese word Mike has tattooed on his hand: sau·da·de (noun) - a feeling of longing, melancholy, or nostalgia.  Warning: This episode shares a lot of details about the film, though nothing discussed would be technically considered a "spoiler alert". It's a discussion mostly of personal feelings experienced. The episode does share interesting Beatle facts not included in the film to add additional context to what was happening in John, Paul, George and Ringo's lives at the time the film was shot, and the backstory of how Peter Jackson became the films director.  Choir intro + outro music by: J. Paul Anthony Gurvitz 6th july 1944 High Wycombe Buckinghamshire England is a multi platinum song writer who's musical journey started at the age of 15 . He bought his first guitar in a local store for 12 pounds and signed his first publishing contract at the age of 16 and has since written countless hits for many artist's including his first hit Race With The Devil with his band "GUN' which some say was the beginning of what they call metal music today. In 1964 he embarked on his touring and performing career as a guitarist with his bands The Londoners , The Knack , Parrish & Gurvitz which was produced by the infamous Sir George Martin and then switched to bass with Gun , Three Man Army , The Graeme Edge Band and The Baker Gurvitz Army which featured Cream drummer Ginger Baker. Now living in Arizona Paul is still an active song writer and has released several solo albums and is now embarking on another journey with his new band The New Army.. It all started back in the early sixties. I was listening to Elvis, Buddy Holly, Cliff Richard & The Shadows and at the age of 15 I bought my first guitar. My father at that time was the Road Manager for the Shadows, so I started to get a taste of the music scene. I taught myself to play a few chords and it wasn't long before I was playing in some local bands. My first professional gig was in France playing on US Army camps. From there I came to to England with the same band and started to play gigs around London, that group was called The Londoners. We were then booked to play the Star Club in Hamburg, Germany. After spending six months in the Star Club we began playing all over Germany at different venues. Once again I returned to London with The Londoners and decided to change the name of the group to The Knack. The Knack was signed to several different labels and recorded several singles for Pye and Decca. A short while after, the psychedelic era started and once again I changed the name of the band to The Gun. The Gun started to slowly get noticed around the London clubs and by 1968 had their first hit record, that was "Race With The Devil". It went to number 4 in the English charts and number 1 in most European charts. The Gun recorded 2 albums "Gun" and Gunsight". In 1971 The Gun broke up and I started a group called Parrish & Gurvitz, which was produced by George Martin. There were two albums recorded but only one was released called "Parrish & Gurvitz". That band toured the US and the UK. At the same time I was recording with my brother Adrian with "Three Man Army". After Parrish & Gurvitz broke up Three Man Army became a touring band and recorded three albums in all, "A Third Of A Lifetime", "Mahesha" and "Three Man Army Two . Three Man Army was getting ready for a fourth album but the drummer (Tony Newman) was asked to join David Bowie. That left my brother and I with no drummer, but not long after we teamed up with Ginger Baker and started a new group. This was "The Baker Gurvitz Army". B.G.A. (as it was called) recorded the first album titled "Baker Gurvitz Army" and then took on two more members for touring. The second B.G.A. album recorded was "Elysian Encounter" and the third was "Hearts On Fire". During the recordings of B.G.A., my brother and I teamed up with the drummer of the "Moody Blues" Graeme Edge, and recorded two more albums. The band was called "The Graeme Edge Band". The first album was "Kick Off Your Muddy Boots" and the second was "Paradise Ballroom". In 1976 the manager of B.G.A. was killed in a plane crash and that was the end of "The Baker Gurvitz Army". The AIR studios in Montserrat are the stuff of legend. Back in the 80's, Sir George Martin set up a place to record in the middle of the Caribbean. It was an escape for the likes of Paul McCartney, Elton John, Stevie Wonder, and Dire Straits. The Police captured one of their biggest albums there, and Duran Duran hung out for a spell too. This haven in the West Indies was short lived though; a hurricane then a dormant volcano that became active, changed the island forever. Now this story is being told, by Australian director Gracie Otto. Under the Volcano is a capture of time, when big money was being spent making albums and some of the biggest personalities were making them. But it's also the story of an island and it's people, and how they impacted the lives and sounds of these musicians forever. From Arrow to Dire Straits to Elton, Gracie Otto shares her island songs and the stories behind sharing this magical tale. In 1979 The Beatles producer Sir George Martin turned a Caribbean paradise into a 1980s hit making crucible for the likes of Paul McCartney, Elton John, and such acts as the Rolling Stones, The Police, and Dire Straits. His vision was to create a studio where artists could come and be free to express their creativity and record albums.  After a decade of hits, and at the peak of its popularity, AIR Studios Montserrat was destroyed when hurricane Hugo hit the island in 1989, followed by the eruption of the Soufrière Hills volcano in 1995.  Acclaimed filmmaker Gracie Otto wrote and directed Under the Volcano (2021), in which she documented this incredible story. She shares how she tracked down all those who were involved with AIR Studios Montserrat in the 1980s and how she obtained the rights for the amazing soundtrack for the film ("Money for Nothing", "Every Breath You Take").  Under the Volcano came out on digital platforms in the UK on July 26th and releases in the US on August 17th, and Australia and New Zealand on September 1st. “AIR Studios Montserrat was such a representation of the time, of the music industry, of what was allowed, and how big the budgets were.” - Gracie Otto Time Stamps: 00:00 - Under the Volcano trailer. 2:58 - Introducing our guest Gracie Otto. 4:23 - What Under the Volcano is about. 6:17 - What famous songs and albums were recorded in AIR Studios Montserrat. 9:39 - What was so special about AIR Studios.  13:20 - What made Montserrat in the Caribbean a special place for musicians. 15:22 - How Gracie tracked down all the people who were involved with AIR Studios.  20:10 - Montserrat's woes since the hurricane in 1989 and the volcanic eruption in 1995. 24:00 - How the music industry worked in the 1980s, and how it has changed since. 26:16 - A clip from the film: Sting and others talking about AIR Studios at Montserrat. 27:22 - How Gracie got involved with making this film. 33:24 - The budget for music rights for the film soundtrack. 35:35 - What other projects Gracie Otto is working on. 39:00 - The different processes of working on documentaries, feature films and TV. 41:48 - What it's like to make a documentary about a parent or a family member.
