Alan Doyle says the best part of leaving, is coming home. And home is Newfoundland. His elders voted to keep Newfoundland a country, but they lost the 1949 referendum and joined Canada. Alan is the first generation Canadian in his family. We talk about his love of touring, of music, of acting beside Russell Crowe, and partying in pubs. Alan plans to keep performing forever. Why, he asks, would one ever retire? We tried to get him to confess to being secretly unhappy. It didn't work. His new album is a bit more country, much more intimate, and he dares us to find his actual confessions in the songs. Still, it's the good times, the old songs and sounds, that keep him going. After years of performing with Great Big Sea, he's got a new band and a new album, called of course, “Welcome Home”. It's a bit ironic that the Newfoundland cod moratorium helped expose the songs of fishing communities to the rest of the world. Con O'Brien and the original members of The Irish Descendants were all working in the fishing industry when they started playing together. And after the collapse of the cod stocks in 1992, the members moved full time into the music industry. An international recording contract helped them become the first Newfoundland band to record a compact disc and paved the way for others like Great Big Sea. O'Brien and The Irish Descendants will be performing at the Light House Arts Centre in Halifax on Saint Patrick's Day. This is a brief history of the band from the man who calls himself the bands lowest common denominator.

In this episode we explore traditional folk music and how it is a powerful oral storytelling tool that carries culture, tradition, history, and knowledge across generations, shaping people's identity today. We speak with the infamous musical duo Fergus O'Byrne and Jim Payne who are spreading traditional folk music around the island – and the world – keeping Newfoundland and Labrador culture alive. We also had the pleasure of being joined by Darrell Power, former member of Great Big Sea, who has since established two recording studios among other projects. Our guests share their relationship with music, what traditional folk music sounds like and means to them, and how growing up draped in an era of culture and music influenced their musical careers. On this week's Richard Crouse Show we'll meet actor and JUNO nominated, jazz singer and songwriter Alex Bird. The subject line of the email from his publicist really caught my eye. “Move over Bublé,” it read, “JUNO-nominated artist Alex Bird has released Canada's FIRST Thanksgiving song.” That's right, Thanksgiving finally has its own anthem courtesy of Alex Bird. In this interview we talk about the inspiration behind “The Sweetest Moments” and why Canada deserved a Thanksgiving song of its very own. We'll also meet Mark Critch, star of the hit CBC sitcom “Son of a Critch” and “This Hour Has 22 Minutes,” which celebrates its 30th season this year. We talk about his time spent on the political satire, and some of his antics, like photo-bombing Justin Trudeau, interviewing Great Big Sea's Alan Doyle (while impersonating Alan Doyle), offering Pamela Anderson a million dollars to stop acting, and crashing a White House briefing. Then, since publishing his first novel in 1968 John Irving has been a literary force. He is the Academy Award winning author of The World According to Garp, The Cider House Rules, A Prayer for Owen Meany and many others which have been translated into more than thirty-five languages. Today we talk about his latest novel The Last Chairlift, the epic story of a slalom skier with an eventful past, that displays his trademarked imagination, storytelling gifts, and intelligence.

Over the past decade it has been my pleasure to have several opportunities to interact with Murray Foster.  His credits include being the bassist for Great Big Sea, a member of the 1990s rock sensation Moxy Früvous and he was the writer/director/producer of the acclaimed film "The Cocksure Lads Movie". He is so much more than that... Juno nominated musician, song writer, founder of the Toronto Songwriters School, life long TTRPG player, community leader and even a former Cub Scout.  His work and passions have touched on so many of the things we here at Leaders N Legacies believe in, it made perfect sense to have him in as our first guest interview (more to come).   Murray is also the co-writer of the new musical "The Quest", a Dungeons & Dragons musical.  The show will be running online and in-person from February 11 to 19th and should be a real treat for audiences. This theatrical event is being put on by the Canadian College of Performing Arts.  We hope this interview will convince you to check it out and support emerging arts and artists. You can find out more and get tickets here: https://www.ccpacanada.com/the-quest/ Interested in learning more about songwriting and performing, Murray would love to have you join him at the Toronto Songwriters School (thanks to the pandemic, now available online): https://torontosongwritingschool.com/ We would also love for you let Murray know that he should be guest player on the podcast.   You can follow him on Twitter @MurrayFoster1.  If you are here just for the Murray Foster interview, thanks for checking or podcast out.  Want to hear a recap of episodes 1-8, you can check that out here:  https://anchor.fm/david-rockwell/episodes/Leaders-N-Legacies---Recap-with-Korin-e15m5se. The pressure of a deep, dark secret and the trappings of success as a founding member of the Newfoundland band Great Big Sea meant that Séan McCann had every reason to overindulge in partying and alcohol. But when he married Andrea Aragon and started a family, he was too entrenched in his lifestyle to be a strong presence in family life. In "One Good Reason: A Memoir of Addiction and Recovery, Music and Love" they share their healing journey. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Andrea Aragon and Séan McCann have a lot in common; they are married, they have two children together, and they coauthored a best selling book ("One Good Reason") that allows a glimpse inside their once fractured relationship that had to hit rock bottom before it could begin to heal. They talk to Matt about the shared experiences that brought them both through the darkest moments of their lives, how they fought their way out, and the process of writing such a painfully honest book together. They also discuss the flip side of success. Some know Séan as a founding member of the multi-million selling and iconic folk band Great Big Sea, others know him for his work as an acclaimed mental health advocate and powerful supporter for survivors of sexual abuse and those struggling with addiction. Andrea knows him for these things and she also has seen Séan at his lowest when his drinking nearly destroyed them...but Andrea loved him enough to help him face his demons and start a new journey that allowed them both to help themselves and in doing so set them on a path of helping others.
