Meghan McCallum is a freelance writer and French to English translator living in Wisconsin. She was diagnosed with Stage III Triple Negative breast cancer at 32. In this episode Meghan reads her essay “This Is Cancer” from Wildfire Magazine's 2022 “Cancer Culture” issue. Her piece is about the surrealness of suddenly finding yourself traveling in the weird world of breast cancer – and discovering that the trappings of a “regular” breast cancer experience doesn't feel quite right. April and Erin will discuss the power of vulnerable storytelling, the outlet sharing life's difficulties provides to sustain one's sense of self, and regulating yourself when sharing stories while standing in your truth. They will also discuss the topic of performative breast cancer, and where writing is taking Meghan today. Meghan's essay also appears in Wildfire's book “Igniting the Fire Within.” More about Meghan: https://www.instagram.com/thriverwriter/https://www.thriverwriter.com/Read another story written by Erin in the “Love & Intimacy” issue of Wildfire: https://www.wildfirecommunity.org/shop/love23Buy the Wildfire book “Igniting the Fire Within: Stories of Healing, Hope & Humor, Inside Today's Young Breast Cancer Community”: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BJVJ629F?ref_=pe_3052080_397514860Buy the “Cancer Culture” issue here: https://www.wildfirecommunity.org/shop/printcc22Get the free Wildfire email newsletter: https://www.wildfirecommunity.orgLearn about Wildfire writing workshops: https://www.wildfirecommunity.org/workshopsShop Wildfire merch & more: https://www.wildfirecommunity.org/shop*Free* The Burn Writing Companion: Guided Prompt Journal (Vol. 1): https://www.wildfirecommunity.org/the-burn

Meghan McCallum left the fire service after 14 years, walking away as a chief, she now leverages her risk analysis from her experience and from her Masters degree from the University of Chicago in Threat Response and Management into her investing career. A full-time real estate investor for almost 4 years now with a portfolio of 41 doors, she is partnering into new companies with other investors who specialize in their own niches. Due to her exposure to almost every form of real estate investing she helps drive trends and pivots with her team as change occurs. She is launching the REI Tech podcast as a mission to further the advancement of the real estate industry into the digital age. Post-Interview Analysis  Key Lessons Learned: Protect your vulnerabilities in life, not just business. Know that things are going to go wrong, that problems will come up. Work through your what if’s and protect what you can with lawyers and insurance as necessary. Don’t expect real estate investing and strategies to stay the same forever. Things are always changing and we’re seeing that tech may be a significant factor in those changes. How did they acquire their knowledge or what knowledge did they need to acquire? She gained her knowledge from doing. Her biggest recommendation for what new investors should know, is just to keep learning. Keep doing. How much money did it take to get started? About $80,000 cash down on a house hacked duplex worth $280,000. That property is not worth somewhere in the $900,000 to $1,000,000 range. How much time does it take now? She puts in about 5-6 hours a month. Could they do this strategy from anywhere in the world? As long as she has a property manager and boots on the ground, yes. Unbelievable Real Estate Stories

When Meghan McCallum’s mom first called her “unemployable,” little did she know how that one term would mold her life and career. Meghan went searching for a niche in life, with this “unemployable” tag hanging over her head. Then, she understood what her mom meant: just DO something! Meghan asked herself: Why am I afraid to try something new and fail? Finally, she put her trepidations aside and jumped into real estate investing. She made some mistakes along the way but realized that in order to have success you first must confront failure. Now Meghan and her business partner Zach are paving the way in investment education by starting their own two companies. They are mentoring new investors, and providing them with top-quality education at a low cost. Then they are leading these new investors into deals that have already been thoroughly vetted.  Listen to Meghan’s inspiring and sentimental story, how all of this happened because her mom dubbed her “unemployable.”   Lessons Learned  It is better to fail upwards; you are still moving forward and not going down.   Finding a mentor is a crucial aspect of learning in real estate, those who do not find a mentor are more likely to walk away.   Mentors also hold you accountable and encourage you not to quit.   Instead of only listening to other investors, start listening to what others in different fields have to say because that will help you to accelerate faster in real estate.   Even if the path before you in real estate may seem unclear, just do something. You are only hurting yourself by not taking that first step.   Family and friends may not always offer support if you choose to go into real estate because they do not want you to fail. But in the industry, you must push one another to try and fail in order to see success. Do not be afraid to make mistakes.   The greatest wealth generation comes when the markets are expanding. That is the best time to do business, especially real estate.   Meghan and her partner, Zach Henderson, are forming two companies that will: 1) make real estate more accessible 2) make it safer and 3) provide support to those trying to grow in the industry.   Meghan started real estate investment clubs all over the country because investors wanted to make connections and meet other investors, but they were unsure of how to formulate that support.   Meghan and Zach are creating time-relevant education, known as Tigon Education, for investors by partnering with top syndicators, lawyers, and CPAs in the industry to produce this essential content. This helps more and more people get involved because, unlike with a book, the content is constantly evolving and being updated.   The first content being provided is self-directed retirement investment strategy for those who want to invest in real estate.   The goal of her company Tigon is to get top-quality information out to the masses at a lower cost.  The other company, Liger Investing, provides opportunities for investors to get involved in passive deals Meghan and Zach are already investing it; the syndicators have been thoroughly vetted.    Links Mentioned   Meghan McCallum on Facebook  Meghan@McCallumholdings.com   Meghan McCallum on Instagram  Tigon Education  Liger Investing
