This special episode was recorded live at the Miu Miu Literary Club, which took place on 9th-10th April 2025 in Milan. Under the direction of Mrs Miuccia Prada, and now in its second iteration, the Literary Club is the latest in a series of cultural experiences devised by Miu Miu to promote the arts. - Naoise Dolan is an Irish author whose first book, ‘Exciting Times', was published to widespread acclaim in 2020. Naoise followed this with the equally well-received ‘The Happy Couple' in 2023. In both books, Naoise tackles the confusion of contemporary life with precision and wit: her characters grapple with sexuality, housing instability, social media malaise, and our growing class disparities. At the same time, Naoise brings a fresh, often unpredictable perspective to the timeless topics of education, girlhood, and desire that inform this year's Literary Club curation. - Deep Reading Lists can be found at phoebe.substack.com - @phoebelovatt @phoebelovattpubliclibrary @naoisedolan @miumiu

This week's guest is author Naoise Dolan. I am absolutely thrilled to have Naoise on this season – she's widely consider of the millennial generation's most talented writers, ever since her Sunday Times bestseller debut novel Exciting Times was published in 2020. It's currently being adapted into an Amazon Studios TV production starring Phoebe Dynevor. We're here to discuss her hotly anticipated follow up book, The Happy Couple, which is a sort of anti-rom counting down to the wedding of a boy and girl who probably shouldn't get married. During this recording, we chat about Naoise's experiences of being an expat in Berlin – where she's lived less than a year. Fans of Naoise, who is originally from Dublin, will know that she is no stranger to the experience of living abroad – her first book, Exciting Times, was heavily inspired by her own expat experience living in Hong Kong, while she's also lived in Singapore and Italy. From an alone time perspective, this is an interesting position to be in – and Naoise describes how this sense of being a foreigner has enabled some of the incredibly perceptive social observation in her writing. We also discuss Naoise's autism diagnosis, and how it might or might not reflect itself in her writing – plus, whether framing writing as ‘neurodivergent' is useful in the first place. I found Naoise incredibly thoughtful and intelligent – she has a dark sense of humour, which I really appreciate, and she has one of the best laughs I've ever heard on this podcast. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did. We discuss, among other things:Naoise's decision to relocate to Berlin [4:56]Navigating cultural differences as an autistic person [9:01]Why Naoise structured her book around a wedding narrative [19:25]Main character syndrome, in relation to Naoise's protagonist Celine [24:08]Naoise's characters' self-sabotaging tendencies (in The Happy Couple & Exciting Times) [30:26]How Naoise's neurodiverse perspective influences her writing [34:23]Naoise's love of drawing in her alone time [38:30]You can purchase Naoise's book, The Happy Couple, now online and in bookstores.Subscribe to my weekly email newsletter at francescaspecter.substack.com to follow my personal writing plus podcast bonus content. According to a new report from Adoption UK nearly half of families with adopted children aged 13 to 25 say they are at ‘crisis point' or ‘facing severe challenges'. Author, Becky Brooks, discusses her report alongside Clare, a parent of adopted children. Indian women wrestlers have been living on the streets of Delhi in protest after they accused their sport's federation's top official of sexual harassment and abuse. There is just three months until the World Championships and the Asian Games when ordinarily these women would be focussed on intense training. Nuala discusses the situation with Divya Arya, Women's Affairs Journalist at BBC Delhi. A new production of Rigoletto opens next week at Opera Holland Park. Described as “a propulsive tragedy of toxic masculinity and unfettered power”, the director, Cecilia Stinton, explains why she has set it in an Oxbridge-style college post World War I, and the relevance of the story to a modern audience. The soprano, Alison Langer, who plays the role of Gilda, also joins Nuala and performs live in the studio. New research has found that women are twice as likely to die within 30 days of a heart attack compared with men. To explore why women continue to appear more vulnerable after having a heart attack Nuala is joined by consultant cardiologist Dr Sonya Babu-Narayan. The Happy Couple is the second novel by the acclaimed Irish novelist Naoise Dolan, whose debut Exciting Times was longlisted for the Women's Prize for Fiction. It follows a young couple, Celine and Luke, in the run-up to their wedding and explores the creeping doubts they have about each other, marriage and monogamy. Naoise joins Nuala in the studio. Presenter: Nuala McGovern Producer: Emma Pearce
The July Art of Reading book club features Laureate for Irish Fiction Colm Tóibín in conversation with writer Naoise Dolan about her novel Exciting Times. “This novel is a tour-de-force work about exile and the world of expats in Hong Kong. Seeking accommodation, looking for love, teaching English as a foreign language, dealing with foreigners, being Irish, calling home, are all dramatized with wit and emotional accuracy and a refusal to settle for easy narrative solutions.” Colm Tóibín, Laureate for Irish Fiction 2022-2024. The first of our season of celebrating The Exuberance of Youth in this the centenary year of the BBC, World Book Club talks to Irish writer Naoise Dolan about her dazzling novel Exciting Times. Psychologically astute and dryly funny, Exciting Times is a modern, intelligent dissection of youth, power and privilege set amongst the international circles of contemporary Hong Kong. Clever, young millennial Ava, an Irish graduate teaching English, is having an affair with rich cynical banker Julian. Then she meets Edith. Earnest, attentive and all the things Julian isn't. A raw, intimate exploration of love and sexuality amongst millennials, Exciting Times charts the often transactional nature of relationships in our complicated modern world. Naoise Dolan is the author of the best-selling novel Exciting Times, who explores through her journalism what it means to be neurodiverse and what allistic people often misunderstand about autism. We discuss hidden disabilities, the problem with 'likeability' and why it would benefit us all to live in an Ask Culture world. In Episode 12 of the EWBR podcast, Anisha & Dhruv discuss the Young Adult genre in fiction – marketing ploy or the real deal? For all you Potterheads out there, before there was Potter, there was Ged – we talk about Ursula Le Guin's epic Earthsea series and in the non-fantasy space, Weightless by Sarah Bannan. Then there's Michaela Coel's searing and very, very relevant TV drama of consent in this day and age, I May Destroy You. Finally, Anisha's been having a bit of a salad love-in, so more on that and the ever reliable flavour gurus Meera Sodha, Ottolenghi and Sabrina Ghayour. (The links below are affiliate links. Naoise Dolan and Jessie Tu were responsible for two of the most bracing, exciting debuts of 2020. Naoise's Exciting Times and Jessie's A Lonely Girl is a Dangerous Thing are witty, bold accounts of the power dynamics of sex and relationships in the twenty-first century, with heroines that deadpan their way through relationships – transactional, erotic and romantic – as they navigate love, vulnerability and ambition and muster the courage to find their true selves. We're welcoming in a new year of reading with not one but two books, Writers & Lovers by Lily King, and Early Work by Andrew Martin. Two aspiring writers, two messy love lives, two very different books that each take the craft of writing as their main theme, one from the female perspective and one from the male. How did they compare? What did Laura's book club make of them? Should they be on your TBR? Listen in to find out. Plus a maximalist recommendations session at the end partly because we love ‘em, and partly because we had so many great books on the subject to share. We are so happy to welcome agent Cecilia (CeCe) Lyra to the podcast! Cecilia will go through her inbox, #TenQueries style, giving us in-the-moment reactions to her queries. Ever wondered what agents think when they read your submissions? Now you know. Cecilia Lyra is an agent at P.S. Literary actively acquiring adult fiction and nonfiction. She is particularly drawn to stories centered around dysfunctional families, ethical or moral dilemmas, and taboo subjects. She adores reading about protagonists who grew up straddling two opposing worlds and appreciates subtle storytelling, with characters who are nuanced and flawed, as opposed to overwritten and nice. Cecilia enjoys writing that is thoughtful on a line level with a strong, almost hypnotic voice. Some of her recent favorite novels include WHITE IVY by Susie Yang, THE VANISHING HALF by Brit Bennett, and EXCITING TIMES by Naoise Dolan. In terms of nonfiction, Cecilia is seeking books about popular subjects written by experts in their field examined through original angles, particularly ones that deal with psychology and social behavior. Cecilia also loves memoirs, and strongly believes that a good memoir reads like a novel. Favorite nonfiction titles include TRICK MIRROR by Jia Tolentino, MAYBE YOU SHOULD TALK TO SOMEONE by Lori Gottlieb, and IN THE DREAM HOUSE by Carmen Maria Machado. No matter the category or genre, stories centered around feminist issues have a special place in Cecilia's heart, particularly those that explore intersectionality: race, sexual orientation, national identity, economic privilege and class. As a mixed race Latinx immigrant, Cecilia is passionate about representing under or misrepresented voices that contribute to a larger cultural conversation. She believes in editing with compassion, and that words of affirmation can make all the difference in a writer's life. Cecilia began her bookish career through the Centennial College Book, Magazine, and Electronic program and The Rights Factory. Before working in publishing, Cecilia was a lawyer, and now reserves her litigious energy for rants against the patriarchy.
Links Has Self-Awareness Gone Too Far in Fiction? On Curtis Sittenfeld's Rodham, Anne Tyler's Redhead by the Side of the Road, and Naoise Dolan's Exciting Times
My guest for this week's Sunday Salon isolationcast is a really special one. I'm thrilled to have spoken to Naoise Dolan, author of the newly-released bestseller Exciting Times. One of the year's most hotly-tipped debuts, it tells the story of Ava, a young Irish woman teaching English in Hong Kong, and her romantic relationships with Julian, a rich banker, and Edith, a Hong Kong local who went to an English boarding school. Deadpan and sharp, it examines themes of class, sexuality and power. I loved chatting to Naoise - as an autistic person, she was fascinating on her experience of lockdown, and how in some ways releasing a book under these circumstances has been a relief. We also discussed writing about queerness, giving up apologising and how it feels to be compared to Sally Rooney (the two are friends and Rooney published a preview of Exciting Times in the literary magazine The Stinging Fly). I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Naoise Dolan, author of the acclaimed debut novel, Exciting Times, joins Declan Meade in studio to read and discuss the subtle gothic horror of Emma Donoghue's 'Looking for Petronilla', a story that appeared way back in Issue 11 of the magazine in Winter 2001. Naoise Dolan was born in Dublin, studied at Trinity College, and completed a master's degree in Victorian literature at Oxford. Her writing has featured in The Dublin Review and The Stinging Fly. Her debut novel Exciting Times has been described by Hilary Mantel as “droll, shrewd and unafraid” – it is published this month by Weidenfeld & Nicolson in the UK, and in June by Ecco in the US. Emma Donoghue is an Irish-Canadian playwright, literary historian, novelist, and screenwriter. Her 2010 novel Room was an international best-seller, and a finalist for the Man Booker Prize – the movie adaptation of the book was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Donoghue's 1995 novel Hood won the Stonewall Book Award, and her novel Slammerkin won the Ferro-Grumley Award for Lesbian Fiction. Her latest novel, Akin, was published last year. The Stinging Fly Podcast invites Irish writers to choose a story from the Stinging Fly archive to read and discuss. Previous episodes of the podcast can be found here. The podcast's theme music is ‘Sale of Lakes', by Divan. All of the Stinging Fly archive is available for subscribers to read – subscribe now and access 20 years of the best new writing.
