Um, but then recruiting the right people along the way.Farm to Pet is proving that a simple, single-ingredient dog treat can challenge the highly processed pet snack aisle while building a fast-growing business.Jackson Jones, founder and CEO of Farm to Pet, started with a problem close to home: he wanted something healthier for his dog, Rooney. During the pandemic, he began experimenting in his basement with a KitchenAid mixer, a dehydrator and a simple idea.He told me, “I wanted to create something that was what I considered the healthiest treat for my dog and had an idea that we could take a chicken breast, we could take a turkey breast, and we could dehydrate that and just literally use it and nothing else.”That “nothing else” became the heart of the Farm to Pet brand. The company makes single ingredient treats in a crunchy chip format that dogs love. Jackson explained the common reaction perfectly: “That's one of the first things people ask is, are you sure it only has one ingredient? What else do you put in there?”What began as a homemade snack for Rooney has grown into a vertically integrated pet treat company with national reach. Jackson moved from the basement into one facility after another, ultimately landing in a larger production space that allows the company to meet demand. Along the way, Farm to Pet built sales through local retailers, Amazon and other channels.I was struck by Jackson's candor about the challenge. “It wasn't an overnight success by any means,” he said. “It's been steps and steps along this journey.”For me, the human interest in this story is the combination of love for a pet, entrepreneurial persistence and a clean-label product that is easy for customers to understand. He admitted he did not know Instagram and was trying to DM people without much confidence. Rather than struggle alone, he invited Miranda to join the company and lead that work. At a Fleischmanns street fair, a bottle with a bright red label and bold white type — Station Navy Strength Gin — stops Brett at the Skillers booth. Owner James Rooney pours a taste and explains why British sailors once needed their gin strong enough that gunpowder would still ignite if it got splashed with the stuff. That bottle leads to a drive up to Lexington, NY, to see where it's made.Skillers Mountaintop Distillery occupies a small pre-fab barn in what started as Rooney's ski house property near Hunter. Kaatscast walks us through some of the New York state laws that made a small operation like his possible — the Micro Distillery Act of 2003, which cut licensing fees enough to let small producers in; the Farm Distillery Act of 2007, which let distillers open tasting rooms and sell direct, the way wineries already could; and the Craft New York Act of 2014, which simplified licensing further and let farm distilleries sell in satellite locations. In exchange, farm distilleries have to source at least 75% of their ingredients from New York — Skillers uses 100% New York corn as the base for all three of its spirits, filling in the small remainder with botanicals like coriander that can't be grown locally.The three bottles get a full tasting. Greywacke vodka takes its name from the bluestone bedrock under the Catskills, and Rooney credits its stony, mineral edge to Schoharie Creek water that's filtered through that rock. The navy strength gin, bottled at 57% ABV, is built specifically to survive being mixed into a Negroni without landing flat. And horilka — a honey and chili spirit named for the Ukrainian word for flower (kvitka) — nods to the area's Ukrainian community, using local honey and an ultrasonic extraction process to pull flavor from Thai chilies.Gin-smith Jeff Graham describes running the still, watching a batch drip for hours to yield about 20 gallons at a time. Marketing director Todd Spire talks about the tasting room's weekend acoustic music series. And we learn that Skillers spirits are now on shelves at Elevated Wines in Hunter and behind the bar at Small Talk in Woodstock and Peekamoose in Big Indian. In 2021, famed Irish author Sally Rooney declined to publish her book in Israel because there was no BDS-compliant publisher. At the time, she said she would be “pleased and proud” to have her books translated into Hebrew, as long as it was done in a way that respected the principles of the boycott. Last week, Rooney announced that she was publishing a Hebrew translation of her latest book, Intermezzo, with November Books and +972 Magazine. The publishers had been vetted by PACBI, the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel, and deemed BDS compliant. This means November Books does not operate in Israeli settlements, receives no state funding, and explicitly recognizes the Palestinian right of return. In The Guardian, Rooney said she “kept in touch with PACBI along the way to try to ensure that I was upholding both the letter and the spirit of the institutional boycott.”Immediately, there was backlash. Some Palestinian writers, including Mohammed El Kurd and Susan Abulhawa, questioned the decision to use this “loophole” in BDS guidelines to bring the book to Israeli audiences. Why now? And why this? Even if it adheres to the letter of the boycott, does it capture the spirit, as Rooney says?
