I’m having a quick chat today with Natalie Ferguson today – she’s the head of product at Hatch, one of NZ’s online share market investing platforms that gives investors access to the US.Imagine that you decided a month ago that you wanted to invest in Gamestop.. You could have purchase shares at the start of 2021 for around $20 – a couple weeks later you would have seen the price hit around $450 each. Wow! – You’d be pretty pumped, that is, until you tried to sell. Due to some reasons we’ll cover in this episode – this is exactly what happened. Trading was halted at the worst possible time for retail investors: People who bought in, may have experienced a meteoric rise in their portfolio, but then they found it impossible to sell to realise the gains. Since the news of this broke, the share price has been floating down like a wet feather to where we’re at now at the time of recording of $50 each. What does it mean to short a stock?Shorting is when you borrow a stock from a broker, then sell that stock at the market value today, with an expectation that you can repay that share by acquiring it again at a later stage, hopefully at a much lower price. With shorting, you sell high, then buy low (contrast this with ‘going long’, where you [hopefully] buy low and eventually sell high. By shorting, you can profit from the price of a share declining – larger players in the sharemarket, hedge funds, will often identify companies that are likely to face a decline in value in an attempt to benefit from their demise through shorting. Now I’m not describing a tool here that you should be using, this is just for background – in fact, unless you’re involved in trading actively (and using a platform made for that purpose), it would be a bit unusual to see everyday investors shorting. So going back to Gamestop, what we’ve seen is what’s also known as a short squeeze. Hedge Funds that were shorting Gamestop were waiting until the price dropped further – that’s what they expected would happen because remember, this company sells video games in physical malls. So these hedge funds ultimately need to re-purchase the stock (hopefully cheaper) to repay the borrowed stocks. Now what happens when you’re short and the price rises as in the case with Gamestop? You have to either hold on for the ride, or close out your position and purchase the stock to do it. Like sitting in the car in the sun, windows up complete with farting and complaining children– you can only hang on so long then you have to crack a window right? So, a rising share price due to increasing demand, along with short sellers covering their position, gives you what’s known as a short squeeze. The result is that it further intensifies the upward momentum in price.A special thanks again to the listeners of the show who messaged me last week asking me to cover this topic. One other thought I want to leave you with before ending this episode if I may. I’d love to suggest this is a simple story of David and Goliath – but in reality, just like with David and Goliath, there was conflict brewing beforehand, and there was conflict afterwards. This saga has shown us that something’s going on, but for those ‘sticking it to the man’, the man has only just noticed your strategy. Technology, and more importantly, organised groups of people using technology, has the power to change the way investing works going forward. With any war, there will be some destruction, but there’s also going to be opportunity. Hedge funds perhaps need to make some changes, but the opportunities that were really only theirs to exploit, has now been released to others. For a more comprehensive and deep dive into what's happened, stay tuned to the show, but also check out this video from Brent Osachoff________________________________________________________________The NZ Everyday Investor is brought to you in partnership with Hatch. In this wide ranging interview Darcy sits down with Natalie Ferguson & Kristen Lunman from Hatch Invest to talk about encouraging good behavior from retail investors, why a Hatch employee’s kid loves him more because he owns Disney shares, and the benefits of planning for a portfolio nosedive.***Note, for those using the audio only version, Kristen is the Co-founder with the Canadian accent and Natalie is the Head of Product with the Kiwi accent————With retail investor mania clearly on the rise, there's been a widely held opinion from the stiff lipped, long-time investors, that most of these investors are going in blind. Perhaps this is true from the wider global community led by the likes of Davey Day Trader, but Hatch counts their users outside of this group. Hatch is on a mission to buck the trend of under-informed investors heaping into bad decisions by supporting initiatives that provide independent commentary/education; and it’s been returning dividends. A recent survey of Hatch users found that a massive 97% of its users self-report having done their research before investing, through a combination of annual reports, analyst reports, and share price trackers. “Well I think if you compare Hatch with any other investment platform, it’s our education which makes the difference. You get that education, you get that support, you get that community; to make wiser decisions,” said Natalie. As head of product, Natalie has made a concerted effort to distinguish themselves from the likes of Robinhood in the United States. The retail investing app has seen widespread criticism for using nudge theory — the idea of encouraging behaviors through clever pushes that the podcast covered about a couple of months ago — to lure poorly equipped investors into frequent trading.“My biggest concern is that the easier that you make something to get in, the easier it is to get out also", said Darcy.“We made the browsing experience pretty full on to start to make sure people did the research on what they wanted to invest in, without leading them into making a particular investment.", Said NatalieHatch has intentionally designed the platform with small fees on each transaction, so as not to encourage frequent daily trades. They have also removed celebratory emails after every transaction, instead, they focus on celebrating things like receiving dividends at the end of year.Passing down financial educationOn the cards in the coming weeks, is Hatch’s first foray into investing for kids, which they see as a positive way to build better financial understanding amongst the next generation. For Kristen, buying her son into Nike, one of his favourite companies, has formed the perfect introduction to investment education. “It’s such a good way to get them engaged,” said Kristen. Purposeful investingOne of the biggest lessons that kids and adults alike need to learn as the world navigates a highly uncertain world, is the idea of pre-determining your response to changing circumstances in the market. “I encourage anyone who is investing anywhere, if things did go up or did drop it’s a really good idea to plan in advance for how you’re going to react,” said Natalie.Whether it’s written down, spoken to a friend, or drawn on a notebooks somewhere; any investor should have a strong strategy for what happens when investments drop. Naturally, seeing your important investment freefalling is going to be of concern, but with a coherent strategy in place, investors can feel confident of an eventual rebound. “If when you look at your portfolio and it’s dropped and it’s the first time you’ve thought about it, you’re not setting yourself up for success,” said Kristen. ___________________________________________________________________The Challenge!Start investing regularly. It’s not about picking stocks, it’s all about investing regularly towards an objective! The goal of the challenge is to get you to start making regular contributions to your investments, to build long term wealth. That's right, perhaps your biggest weakness, is actually you're strength...In today's episode, Kristen and Natalie from Hatch Invest, join me to have a discussion about...What makes women good at investing? How to turn your weakness into a strengthThe importance of finding your tribe.Often when the word 'inclusive' and 'diversity' are thrown about, you're mind could easily go towards thinking this is all about just women, but it's not. There are many groups (and many individuals who don't even fit into a group) who currently feel (and are) excluded from the world of investing. In any given household, it's not uncommon to find that one party is the dominating influence when it comes to making financial decisions, but that one party is not always the most competent. It's important that there's equal opportunity given to all decisions makers in the family with respect to building wealth. Why? Because often the ones who currently don't play the game are actually going to be pretty good at it when they make a start!Hatch Invest is one of NZ's leading online investment platforms that provides an option to buy fractions of US Shares simply and in a cost effective way. In today's episode I'm catching up with Kristen Lunmen and Natalie Ferguson from Hatch, an easy and affordable online platform that can help you invest in the US Sharemarket. There's loads of innovation occuring in this space which is fantastic to see, as it serves a growing community of 'self-directed' DIY investors. This group is not currently being served up any financial advice but as this evolves, I wouldn't be surprised to see digital advice, digital platforms, and digital advisers all uniting as one. Kumbaya! So, we’re talking today about a platform which makes it easy and reduces some of the friction associated with investing in the US Sharemarket – traditionally this hasn’t been easy to do.If you’re into Tesla, Amazon, or Beyond Meat for example, and you wanted to own a slice of the action, then I’d encourage you to check out Hatch – at the very least, set up an account so you can look at the various companies you could invest in. If you feel you’re not 'smart enough' to play the game of investing but you’re really into a company, an industry, or some sort of trend – hey, growing smarts starts with feeding an interest! Some cautions/disclaimers I'd like to state/make/reiterate:Investing in anything is risky. Shares are normally at the higher end of the spectrum of risk/reward. If you invest, then you will likely have times where the value of your investment is negative, especially in the short term.Do your own due diligence on any online platform before committing. If you're unsure, research and learn before you part with any of your money. This episode, and this podcast, shouldn't be considered financial advice - this is just education and hopfully a little entertaining! So with all these disclaimers said, I'm pretty impressed with how Hatch has evolved over the 10 months now it's been around, and I'm excited about where things could go from here. If investing in the US share market is something you’re keen to explore, Hatch really does have a simple gateway. At the very least you're going to learn a lot! Please sign up for free to Hatch here. If you do and you end up depositing some funds in your Hatch account, $20 will go towards the production of this podcast - thank you!_________________________________________________________________Like what you've heard? You can really help with the success of the NZ Everyday Investor by doing the following:1- Tell your friends!2- Write a review on Facebook, or your favourite podcast player3- Help support the mission of our show on Patreon by contributing here4- Search for The Everyday Investor on YouTube5- Sign up to our newsletter hereNZ Everyday Investor is on a mission to increase financial literacy and make investing more accessible for the everyday person! __________________________________________________________________Where to find Darcy Ungaro:Ungaro &Co (registered) financial advisers https://www.ungaro.co.nzFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/UFinServ/?ref=bookmarksInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/ungaro.co.nz/

Until very recently, if you were wanting to buy shares in American companies like Apple, Facebook, Google or Tesla it is quite amazing how hard it could be.You needed either to be buying an awful lot, so to make sense of the massive fees of using a local bank share-trading service as a broker, or you needed to navigate a confusing and bewildering process to get access to an international broking platform, and then all the tax and hassle around that. It is not recommended. And now, an innovative new platform has started up to solve the problem, offering access to US shares and exchange traded funds with brokerage fees at an order of magnitude under the existing big bank status quo. Which may make it surprising that this start up has come from the same holding company as …a big bank! It’s called Hatch, and is from Kiwi Wealth, the sister company to Kiwi Bank, and is a product of their focus on innovation. Because the big banking sector is ripe for disruption, and big change is coming with open banking already changing the fee and service landscape around the world. It’s very cool to see that coming from inside a bank. The general manager of Hatch, Kristen Lunman, and the head of experience Natalie Ferguson have made it their business to do just that. Working first with the Kiwibank Fintech accelerator, and then in the Kiwi Wealth Innovation Lab resulting in this game changer.A disclaimer is that I am a user, but only out of wanting and finding the service and then asking them on once seeing how interesting the background was. To talk the service, opening up investment opportunities and innovating in a bank environment, Natalie Ferguson and Kristen Lunman join us n See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
