In today's rapidly evolving workplace, the disconnect between people and their work has never been more apparent—or more urgent to address. That's why I was thrilled to welcome Brent Kedzierski, a renowned expert on the future of work and human-centric design, to the On the Brink podcast. Brent's mission is clear: to improve the human condition at work, one experience at a time. With more than 35 years of experience—including as Head of Learning Strategy and Innovation at Shell—he brings unique insight into why digital transformation fails, how people resist change, and what organizations can do to rebuild engagement and purpose. The Future Is Human—And Already Here As William Gibson reminds us, “The future is already here. It's just not widely distributed yet.” Brent feels the same way. People often assume technology is the answer to productivity and innovation—but without human adoption and emotional investment, it falls flat. In fact, 90% of digital transformation initiatives fail, not because the technology is flawed, but because people aren't prepared to embrace it. Why? Because humans are fallible, social, adaptable—and resistant to change without a clear purpose. It is that clear purpose that seems to be the hardest thing to get agreement on. Without focus, people wander all over, creating meaning when there is none. Understanding the Human Condition at Work Brent grew up in Pittsburgh, a city built on industry. Watching his family work in steel mills, he developed a fascination with why people work the way they do. That question still drives him. At Shell, he led global initiatives using simulations, virtual reality, and HR analytics to optimize human performance—but found again and again that vendors focused on tech, not people. In every successful transformation, Brent starts by understanding the human experience. As he puts it, people need: A reason to believe change is useful Tools that are easy to use Proof that change offers a relative advantage Compatibility with their current reality These four principles make up 80% of successful adoption. Engagement only happens when people see, feel, and believe that something will make their work—and their lives—better. And, trust me, if they don't “see it” they have no idea what you are talking about. What Is Human-Centric Work Design? Human-centricity isn't new. Since the 1950s, design theorists have argued for putting people at the center of systems. But Brent takes this further by introducing the Human Experience Model, which maps out the full work journey: Expectations – What workers anticipate about a task. Experience – What actually happens when they perform it. Adaptation – How they adjust in real time. Reflection – What they take away and how it shapes future behavior. When organizations ignore this model, they create what Brent calls “experience debt”—inefficiencies, stress, and disengagement that build up over time. As Brent said, “People only change when they see the value and feel a sense of urgency. Without that, even the best-designed systems fall apart.” Health, Wellness, and the Cost of Disconnected Work The toll of misaligned work isn't just emotional—it's physical and economic. Brent notes that 70% of all primary care visits today are stress-related. Poor workplace design contributes to chronic conditions, burnout, and even work-related suicide. He reminds us: “Contented cows give better milk”—in other words, healthy, supported humans produce better outcomes. Organizations that invest in worker wellness—clear communication, psychological safety, autonomy, and purpose—see higher engagement and productivity. And they reduce the enormous costs of turnover, illness, and missed opportunities. Watch the video of our podcast here. Lessons from the Field Brent shared powerful case studies, including one at Shell where digital procedures on iPads replaced outdated paper manuals. Initially resisted by veteran operators, the new system became a hit—not because it was faster, but because it gave workers a voice. Their field notes were finally visible to others, prompting action. In another project, avatars in a virtual training module used thoughtful communication techniques. The surprising feedback from Gen Z trainees? “I wish my supervisor talked to me like the avatar does.” What Comes Next? As we wrapped, Brent offered a teaser: the rise of AI and the flood of data pose a new challenge. By 2026, 90% of online content is expected to be AI-generated. Yet 80% of the data companies create today is never used again—a growing source of digital waste. To navigate this future, we must design systems that balance tech innovation with human needs. Brent calls this the move from Industry 4.0 to Industry 5.0—where technology elevates, not replaces, people. The Takeaway: See, Feel, Think—Then Change As a corporate anthropologist, I urge clients to change only after seeing what's going on and feeling how it impacts people. Brent's insights reinforce that truth: transformation isn't about adopting the newest tool. It's about designing work that empowers humans to thrive. Let's rethink what work really is. Mikki's small team transformed from social media novices into UK leaders in higher ed social media by experimenting with tactics that resonated with their target audiences.Using Students as Influencers Mikki was an early adopter of the "students as influencers" concept. Realizing that prospective students wanted to hear from their peers, she used Instagram's Q&A feature and hashtags to discover students who were already creating authentic, high-engagement content about the university. This strategy uncovered micro and macro influencers—like one student with 300,000 followers—who were eager to collaborate. By partnering with these students, Mikki's team amplified the university's reach and authenticity, fostering trust among prospective students.TikTok as a Recruitment Tool TikTok played a pivotal role in Mikki's strategy. Starting the university's account in 2019, her team grew it from an underutilized platform to the most-followed account within a year. By creating playful, tongue-in-cheek content, they broke through the noise and raised awareness of the university—even in its local community.Mikki shared how TikTok evolved from a discovery platform to a search engine. Early in the recruitment cycle, her team worked with student influencers who had large followings to generate awareness. As TikTok shifted to a search-first platform, they partnered with students who had smaller audiences to create content that addressed specific prospective student concerns, such as accommodations and campus life.Building a Social Media Funnel One of the episode's standout moments was Mikki's explanation of the recruitment funnel and how social media fits into it. She described creating content tailored to each stage:Awareness Stage: Share general information about the university, location, and events to attract prospective students. Success metrics here include reach and impressions.Conversion Stage: Focus on personalized content, such as Q&A sessions and campus tours, to address specific concerns and keep prospective students engaged. Metrics for this stage include comments, direct messages, and content shares.Mikki also emphasized the importance of social listening—using hashtags and search terms like university nicknames—to understand what content students are already creating and searching for. By consistently revisiting these insights each year, institutions can adapt their strategies to evolving student needs.Sustaining Work-Life Balance as a Social Media Manager Mikki ended the conversation with an important confession: she deleted LinkedIn from her phone over the holidays and hasn't reinstalled it since. As a social media professional, she understands the risks of burnout and advocates for intentional breaks from work-related platforms. Contented? Not likely. Vast majorities describe themselves as discontented, always seeking for what's missing. Entire industries are engineered for keeping us that way. Algorithms cleverly exploit our fears and passions to keep us always scrolling. News outlets need us anxious about the crises that might happen. And—we're told—we'll be unsettled and unhappy. Inflation will eat up our paychecks; rising tides will claim our coastlands; hackers will discover passwords. So purchase many layers of things to keep yourself protected. Yet God's good Word is always our corrective: “Godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out” (1 Tim 6: 6-7). Grace quiets what has always been our great anxiety—that God will turn His back, will cast us off, will give us only what we have deserved. In Jesus, heaven calmed our deepest fear: “For God sent the Son into the world, not to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through Him” (John 3:17). Those who most inhabit grace are always most contented. Mercy shown them soon becomes the mercy they show others. Friendships flourish; families strengthen. Anxious thoughts are quieted by God's enduring promise. Make peace with grace, and you will surely stay in it. -Bill Knott

When John D Rockefeller was asked how much money was enough, he famously replied, “Just a little bit more.” This quote is often used to illustrate our hard-to-shake view that money will solve all life's problems. But as today's guest is keen to point out, it probably won't. Because life's true riches don't have a £-sign in front of them. Today's guest is the multi award-winning financial writer and bestselling author Morgan Housel. Morgan is a partner at The Collaborative Fund and a former columnist at The Wall Street Journal. In his first book, The Psychology of Money, Morgan explains how doing well with finance is less about what you know and more about how you behave. This is an idea that I believe applies equally to health. That book became a global sensation and to date has sold over 4 million copies. We're examining the ABCs of grace-full living and what it looks like to be a truly graceful person. As we have seen, A is abundant living, B is bitterless living, and today we look at C. C- Contented Grace-full living is contented living. The dictionary says that a contented person is one who is satisfied with what they are and what they have; they want nothing more or anything else. Does that describe you? I have to tell you there are far too many days it does not describe me. I see a new house being built, and I think how nice it would be to have it. I peruse those catalogs that flood my mailbox, and I can convince myself I can't live without something I saw in the catalog. And we can lose our contentment by wishing we were a different person, with a different life, in a different place, having different gifts and abilities. Ever go there? Living a discontented life will suck the grace of God right out of you. It will cause you to be restless, self-focused, resentful, envious. Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have because God has said, ‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you' (Hebrews 13:5). This is something we must become intentional about doing. We have to work at it, if you please. We have to pray it into our lives. It doesn't just happen. The enemy of your soul will trip you up with discontent if you give him the opportunity. He knows a discontented Christian is not going to dispense grace. He whispers those lies to you, convincing you your life cannot be complete or full or good unless you have something or someone that you don't now have. But we can learn contentment. The Apostle Paul wrote: I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want (Philippians 4:12). Contented living is freedom—and it is grace-full living.
