When we started Excess Returns, we wanted to come up with one way to boil down the best advice from the experts we have interviewed into one simple question. That led us to create a standard closing question that we ask all of our guests, “Based on your experience in the markets, if you could teach one lesson to your average investor, what would that be?”.Over the history of the podcast, we have asked that question to close to 200 guests ranging from great investors to academic experts to options and macro traders. In this episode, we share the answers from our 50 most popular guests all in one episode. Featured guests include Liz Ann Sonders, Cliff Asness, Guy Spier, Michael Mauboussin, Mike Green, Cem Karsan, Chris Davis, Aswath Damodaran, Jack Schwager, Rick Ferri and many others. This is a special episode for us this week as I sit down with famed value investor Guy Spier. I first learned about Guy from his book The Education of a Value Investor. (It's an excellent book if you haven't read it before.)  After reading this book, Guy became a mentor of mine, albeit he wasn't aware of it, and I had never met him before. However, many mentors can come to us from books and other sources without us ever passing next to them. Fortunately for me, I did get to meet Guy in person and thank him for being such a good steward to the finance community. Guy is well known for winning a charity lunch with Warren Buffett that changed the trajectory of his life. In the same spirit, he now hosts his own charity lunch that I was lucky enough to win. This is a full-circle moment for me as I remember reading his book and dreaming of what could be ten years ago. Ten years later, I'm sitting across from one of my mentors, asking questions and conversing about life, finance, and everything in between. I hope you enjoy listening in on our conversation.

In this episode, we explore the stock market's performance through the third quarter. Here's a hint: It's done very well! The S&P just had its best performance through the third quarter since 1997!!! Malcolm Gladwell just released his new book, Revenge of the Tipping Point. We discuss some of its themes and also look back at the original, published in 2000. In the original book "Tipping Point," Gladwell explored how tipping points happen, and we relate that to our personal lives. How much work do you need to put into yourself mentally, physically, and financially to get to where you want to be? It can be a grind, but we all must endure, and our older version of ourselves will be very thankful. AI is already impacting us as we prepare for our Guy Spier interview next month. This week's update will share how we can use it on our podcast.

(I'll be posting two episodes per week for a little bit to catch up with all the summer recordings. Enjoy!) My guest today is Michael McCloskey, who founded and manages Greenskeeper, a value investing firm. Michael and I met at Guy Spier's VALUEx Conference. We snowshoed together in the Swiss Alps at some point and shared many conversations both in Switzerland and at Buffett's Berkshire Meeting in Omaha. Today, we talk about thoughtful, disciplined stockpicking, and the passion for a particular kind of investing, and lessons from running an investment firm. Michael graduated with a dual J.D./M.B.A. degree after completing his undergraduate degree in Mathematics. He is an Ironman finisher, an avid golfer and cyclist, and a voracious reader. He and his wife have two daughters and live in the suburbs of Toronto. Takeways: Childhood experiences and upbringing can shape an individual's curiosity and interests in the world of investing. Being different and embracing one's unique perspective is important in standing out as an investor. A background in law can provide valuable skills and knowledge that can be applied to investing, such as understanding contracts, property rights, and securities law. Investing is a continuous learning process, and investors evolve and improve over time. Mistakes are opportunities for learning and growth, and it is important to be honest with oneself about them. Learning from mistakes and being self-aware are crucial in investing. Investing alongside clients creates alignment of incentives. Long-term thinking and low portfolio turnover can lead to success. The ValueX community provides support and knowledge-sharing. Success is maximizing opportunities, being content, and having the freedom to choose. David is a passionate investor, and wonderful writer, who shares his insights, and observations in his popular blog. My guest today is David Diranko. We met at Guy Spier's VALUEx earlier this year, and spoke since. David is a very thoughtful investor who writes about his process, which rhymes with my philosophy in many ways, though we might be drawn to different hunting grounds. I greatly appreciate his perspective and insights that combine both his passion for investing, and background in data science and machine learning. David shares his investment research on his blog, http://contrariancashflows.com/ . To gain an edge in the market, he focuses on small companies in overlooked or neglected regions and sectors. When he is not researching companies or writing for his blog, David works as a Data Scientist and Machine Learning Engineer for IBM, and he enjoys spending time with his wife and son. David holds a BSc in Business Mathematics from LMU Munich and an MSc in Mathematics in Data Science from the Technical University of Munich. David's blog: https://contrariancashflows.com/ David's twitter: https://x.com/DavidDiranko David's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/david-diranko/ David shares insights on how to look for temporary issues or challenges in businesses that can be resolved over time. My guest talks about considering the contrarian aspect of investing, going in when others are not interested. David tells me that math and numbers can provide comfort and a framework for investing. My guest talks about thinking probabilistically and considering risk as a subjective factor in investing. We discuss the accelerating shift in technology and how businesses can change rapidly within a few years. David emphasizes the importance of continuous learning and adjusting expectations in investing, especially with a longer time horizon. My guest talks about buying tailwinds at a discount and recognizing optionality for successful investments. We discuss how AI has the potential to empower and enhance human decision-making, but it also has limitations and requires transparency and data ownership. David shares the value of being part of a community of like-minded investors for support, ideas, and feedback. Stay tuned until the end, when my guest talks about how success in investing is not just about financial gains but also about maintaining a balanced and fulfilling personal life. What Formula 1 racing can teach us about investing. “It takes a lot of ambition to maximize your wealth over 100 years” - Luca Dellanna I was introduced to Luca's work by Guy Spier in our conversation a year and a half ago. I got see Luca in person a few times since, and we recorded by now three episodes of Talking Billions. Given the kind of long-term, patient, disciplined investing that I practice, Luca's thoughts on long-term games and reproducible success resonate with me and have had a big impact on me. Luca expanded my vocabulary to explain something that I and my clients intuitively understand. I greatly enjoy every episode of Talking Billions as I'm sure you can easily tell, and I can't have favorites, but this conversation is up there in my book, so if you can, don't miss it. Luca Dellanna is a management advisor focused on increasing revenue through better people and operations management. After a master's degree in automotive engineering, Luca spent the first part of his career working for DuPont's consulting unit in Frankfurt, Germany. There, he focused on managerial excellence projects in a variety of manufacturing industries all across Europe. He has also published books about management, human behavior, and economics that earned him appearances on the most important conferences and podcasts in his field, Nudgestock and EconTalk, respectively. Luca writes regularly on Twitter (@DellAnnaLuca). His personal website is www.luca-dellanna.com Today, we talk about the different mindsets of short-term versus long-term players. We talk about how short-term players focus on immediate gains, while long-term players prioritize sustainable growth over time. We discuss the importance of considering the time horizon in investing and life decisions. We talk about understanding the impact of time horizon on risk management and the pursuit of wealth. Luca shares the value of delaying comparison and enjoying the journey in achieving long-term objectives. We discuss how risk management is not about impeding growth but rather about enabling faster growth by protecting against major risks. We talk about how long-term strategies should be sustainable, constructive, and inevitable, ensuring a 100% success rate over the long term. Luca shares that participating in a 'race to the bottom' can lead to sacrificing too much and ultimately losing, even for the winner. 05:00 Short-Term vs. Long-Term Players: A Distinctive Contrast 08:26 Factors Influencing Time Preference: Genetics, Experiences, and Environment 16:13 The Importance of Experiencing Long-Term Benefits for Emotional Solidification 34:16 Navigating Parallel Universes of Success 42:22 The Significance of Delaying Comparison and Enjoying the Journey 53:44 The Relationship Between Risk Management and Growth 01:04:14 Understanding Long-Term Strategies Podcast Program – Disclosure Statement Blue Infinitas Capital, LLC is a registered investment adviser and the opinions expressed by the Firm's employees and podcast guests on this show are their own and do not reflect the opinions of Blue Infinitas Capital, LLC. I loved where this conversation led.We began by talking about recent news: Greta Thunberg taking a political stand and acting publicly on it on an issue unrelated to the environment. Guy described how he saw this action distracting and undermining her credibility in sustainability. We got to talking about overwhelming tribalism today. In the process, Guy shared views he once held that he overcame, specifically about Apartheid. We talked about ones views changing. In the end we got to Guy sharing what I read as something he's had to settle on: that while he generally prefers limited government, low tax policies, with our environmental problems, he's concluded otherwise. Like with national defense, where you need aircraft carriers and such, with the environment he's concluded we need big government solutions.I shared some of my views on big action but to limit government's ability to permit pollution. I read that the views were new to him and attractive. They led him to read my book. Sorry you have to wait until fall to read it, but what I share in this episode hints at why he's written a wonderful endorsement for the book. Hosted on Acast. My guest today is Pieter Slegers, the founder of the world-famous and hugely successful Compounding Quality Newsletter. Pieter and I missed each at the last year's Berkshire meeting, but connected soon after. It was Gautam Baid (the author of Joys of Compounding) who in Omaha told me I should chat with Pieter. We had a few wonderful calls since then, and met in person at Guy Spier's VALUEx in Klosters soon after this recording. Pieter's enthusiasm for investing is contagious, his appetite for knowledge inspiring, and his dedication to teaching admirable. Pieter Slegers studied Financial Management at the KULeuven and graduated summa cum laude. He worked for three years as a Belgian Asset Manager before focusing full-time on his investment newsletter, Compounding Quality. Compounding Quality has more than 350,000 followers across social media and more than 135,000 email subscribers. The goal of the newsletter is to help other investors by focusing on Quality Investing. His investment philosophy can be summarized as follows: find great businesses led by outstanding managers and trade at fair valuation levels (based on the Buffett philosophy). Pieter is joining us from Belgium, where I spent a year as an exchange student two decades ago and where, at the time, I found Peter Lynch's book One Up on Wall Street at a tiny, charming English language bookstore. In the same way Peter Lynch introduced me to investing, my today's guest inspires many readers, followers, and listeners to explore it, too. Tom loves nothing more than meeting interesting people; drop him an email or phone call – if you are intrigued by what you hear today. Tom holds a BA from Oxford University. Tom's bio doesn't give justice to what a fascinating, multi-faceted, complex individual he is, and I hope this episode will reveal a bit more of the Tom I got to meet and spend time with. I was introduced to Tom by Brendon Snow. It was one of a thousand serendipitous moments that have been happening since I launched the podcast. I was walking around Paris earlier this summer listening to Guy Spier's interview with Julie LaRoche, I shared it on Twitter. Brendan reached out and mentioned that he not only also listened to Guy Spier on his visit to Paris not long ago but also went to the same Parisian Grande Ecole I went to. Brendan Snow is the CEO of Fluent Risk Partners. Tom and I had a few long chats before the recording; we also shared a long lunch one summer day at a lovely vegan restaurant. Today, we talked about Tom's life and the journey he's been on, and it's a very inspiring story that Tom shares in a very vulnerable way. We discuss the importance of curiosity and the idea of our future selves leading us on our path. We talk about the focus in the age of perpetual distraction. Tom shares his thoughts on complexity. We also touch on the meaning crisis in today's world. I like Tom's idea of continuously being exposed to new ideas that challenge our worldview. Stay tuned until the end – Tom shares his childhood story; without giving too much away, I will tell you that we are the same age and were both at the same time and the same place, but experienced it from a very different perspective, only to compares our notes, and memories almost four decades later! If that's not serendipity, I don't know what is! https://whatsimportant.substack.com/ https://sapientcapital.com/ ---- Crisis Investing: 100 Essays - My new book. Guy is a successful, well-known hedge fund founder. He's famous for paying a lot of money for one meal with Warren Buffet (hundreds of thousands of dollars), which he found worth it.He and I know each other partly through a guest also in finance I did several episodes with, Whitney Tilson, though we emailed before we found Whitney in common.Regular listeners know a strategy of this podcast is to bring leaders from all areas to sustainability, which lacks leadership. I also look for people in fields that people who call themselves environmentalists often call the enemy. They talk about finance people as just looking for profit, not caring whom they hurt. I think they're presuming someone's intent based on what they see. I think psychologists call that presumption the fundamental attribution error.I don't agree with them. I think everyone has deep, intrinsic motivations on stewardship, but you have to listen more than project onto them to learn it. When it comes out, if you enable them to act on it, they may find the action inspiring and meaningful, and want to do more. I think you'll hear that happen with Guy.I found his book, The Education of a Value Investor, an engaging read that shows the opposite of him caring only about money or profit. I can't wait for our second episode.Guy's home page Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
