This is a fun conversation with Tobias Bucks, Portfolio Manager of Global Small Caps at Ausbil, that turned out to be one of the most fascinating conversations I've ever had. Tobias has a unique background in social anthropology, bringing a perspective to investing that was as refreshing as it was profound. What started as a discussion about global small cap companies evolved into a deep dive into human behaviour, cultural constructs, and the art of asking the right questions. I sat down with Petra Bakosova, portfolio manager at Hull Tactical to explore algorithmic trading and math-driven investing. Petra's insights were sharp and accessible. Petra's a math whiz. She studied applied mathematics in Bratislava, Slovakia and financial mathematics at the University of Chicago. Finance, not teaching, became her passion. She joined Hull Tactical, founded by blackjack legend Blair Hull, to manage the HTUS ETF. We kicked off with three simple words: Invest, add, wait. Honestly, I could've ended the episode right there—it's that powerful. It's the essence of long-term investing, a mantra that echoes Aesop's tortoise and hare. Scott's been at this game long enough to know there's nothing new under the sun—Ben Graham nailed it in the 1930s, and the rest is just tweaking the recipe.Blog post available at: https://www.sharesforbeginners.com/blog/scott-phillips-patiencePortfolio tracker Sharesight tracks your trades, shows your true performance, and saves you time and money at tax time. In this episode I chat with Andrew Brown from East72 Holdings to debunk some financial metrics. We look at discounted cash flow (DCF) valuations, a metric often authoritatively trumpeted by analysts. Andrew argues that DCF is useless for valuing most companies: it's based on unfounded assumptions and crystal-balling and can be manipulated to fit any narrative. Then there's EBITDA (Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortization). Andrew agrees with Charlie Munger's assessment (bullshit!).Blog post available at: https://www.sharesforbeginners.com/blog/ebitda-andrew-brownPortfolio tracker Sharesight tracks your trades, shows your true performance, and saves you time and money at tax time.
