Elise’s guest this episode is Sandy Collier: acclaimed international judge, clinician and member of the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame. Sandy’s analytical approach to training and reputation for consistency in both practice and show pens has resulted in a 50-year career studded with success.    Sandy grew up in the Northeast riding three-day event horses, but fell in love with  Western riding after landing in California in the mid-1970s. There, she worked for Doug  Ingersoll and Tom Shelly, and began to compete on Quarter Horses in the California  Reined Cow Horse Association. By the early 80s, she was running a training program of  her own.    Sandy’s competitive success grew quickly, with multiple AQHA and National Reined  Cow Horse Association World Championships (NRCHA) among her notable results. In  1993, riding Miss Rey Dry, she became the first and only woman to win the NRCHA  Snaffle Bit Futurity Open Championship, regarded as the world’s toughest cow horse  event.     With lifetime earnings of nearly $1 million, Sandy has been inducted into both the  Cowgirl and NRCHA Hall of Fame and Horse and Rider named her one of the Top 50  Riders of All Time in All Disciplines.    Sandy continues to positively impact the Western horse community through her clinics,  training videos and book, “Reining Essentials.” In 2017, Sandy and Barbra Schulte  teamed up to found “Be Unstoppable,” offering clinics and retreats to help equestrians  overcome challenges in reaching their riding and personal goals. With a deep-seated  love of the sport and a drive for constant improvement, Sandy is well known for her ability to find what works for the horse – no matter the discipline – to become their best.    In this episode, Sandy talks about her deep love for horses and how they have inspired her life path; her thoughts on being inducted into the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame, as well as receiving so many other prestigious awards; how her clinics and retreats are structured, and what participants should expect from each; Sandy’s special horses-of-a-lifetime; and her observations from travelling the world. Elise’s guest today is Patricia Kelly, President and CEO of Ebony Horsewomen Inc., in Hartford, Connecticut.   What began in 1984 as a cultural enrichment organization made up of African-American female equestrians has evolved into a devoted team of mental health professionals and horse specialists working to guide over 300 at-risk youth annually towards successful lives. Perhaps most importantly, by creating a safe and welcoming oasis, by providing structure, and by teaching self-respect and self-worth, Pat is demonstrating to youngsters who desperately need it, the resonating message that they matter. She also shares deeply personal stories, including the unexpected kindness that led to her first connection with horses, her father’s riding experiences as the son of former slaves living on the same plantation where they were in bondage, Pat’s service as a United States Marine and how she returned to horses, and the joy – and challenges – she and her team experience every day through working with at-risk youth.   Topics of Discussion: [:19] About Elise’s guest today, Patricia Kelly. She was also awarded National Female Equestrian of the Year by the American Quarter Horse Association and the Women’s Sports Foundation, and is a National Cowgirl Hall of Fame inductee, former Vice President of the Cutting Horse Association, a professional trainer and clinician, a certified Performance Coach, multi-published author, and an equine consultant.   On top of all that, Barbra Schulte is an advocate — and a great example — of living life to the fullest. In this episode, she and Elise discuss how her parents’ training business impacted her own career, from a very early age; how it felt to compete at 13 against adults at the national level – and win; and how her degree and initial, non-horse career actually fed her passion for horses and makes her that much more effective as a trainer and a coach.    In this conversation, Barbara also talks about some of the universal rider issues she’s observed and worked to correct; how she helps guide riders to reframe their thoughts and “rein” in their emotions; explains what makes a good Cutting Horse; and shares her own riding approach and techniques.   Topics of Discussion: [:19] About Elise’s guest today, Barbra Schulte. Elise’s guest on today’s Because of Horses podcast is the renowned trainer, clinician, and competitor, Stacy Westfall. Stacy’s remarkable style of riding without a bridle or a saddle has set the bar for true horsemanship.   Though the list of championships and purses is far too long to detail, here are just a few highlights from Stacy’s incredible career: in 2003, she won the National Reining Horse Association Freestyle competition riding without a bridle; she went undefeated for two years straight in major US freestyle Reining competitions; in 2006 she won twice while riding without a bridle or a saddle; and she was also inducted into the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame in 2012, and has been on the cover of magazines like Horse & Rider.   One of her biggest accomplishments was her 2006 All-American Quarter Horse Congress Freestyle competition that created an absolute sensation. She dedicated her ride to her father who passed away only days prior and the video went viral online. She won with a score of 239, the highest score ever recorded — and of course, did it without a bridle or saddle.   Stacy has also appeared on the Emmy Award-winning Ellen Degeneres Show, even teaching Ellen to ride her beloved Quarter Horse mare, Roxy.   These days, Stacy and her husband, Jessie, own and operate Westfall Horsemanship; a training facility in Ohio where they live with their three boys. Stacy gives clinics, trains horses, produces DVDs, and continues to compete and perform in exhibitions.   Topics of Discussion: [2:56] What led Stacy to become the first person to compete at some of the largest and most prestigious events in the U.S. without a bridle or a saddle? Barbra Schulte is a renowned cutting horse trainer and personal performance coach. For decades she has been helping people from all equestrian disciplines improve their mental focus, mindset and "get in the zone" for whatever event they compete in. She is a member of the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame and the National Cutting Horse Association. In this episode, Barbra and I discuss cutting as an event and what makes it so special. We also discuss goal setting and how Barbra helps her students to succeed in the show pen. And we even tackle a few listener questions toward the end of the interview.
