Since the Western States Horse Expo, Barb and I have spent a lot of time chatting on zoom about life, horses, and the universe. Inevitably, there are many crossovers in our work; patterns and experiences we come across that inform how we approach things, beliefs and understandings that we witness either support people moving forward, or conversely, get in the way. Our conversations on confidence led us back to a foundational piece— of being enough. This idea that ‘I am enough' is a fundamental understanding to have and embody if we are to find ways of unpicking challenging situations, to take consistent action in support of what we love, and to rest in a place where we are able to advocate for ourselves and our horses.  And yet there is so much that gets in the way of us not only thinking that but believing in our own enough-ness.     We are so passionate about this conversation that shortly (next week!) we are holding a workshop with an additional mentoring option that we have called ‘On Being Enough: Exploring the Hearth Of Confidence with Horses & With Yourself'.  In this episode, I am joined by Barbra Schulte to talk about what we mean when we say the word ‘confidence' and how it is we go about developing a sense of ‘enough-ness'  I hope you enjoy it, you can tune in by searching the Confident Rider Podcast on your fave podcast app or via the link below. xx Jane You can learn more about our workshop here: https://confidentrider.online/on-being-enough-workshop/

Lovely people, it felt a little strange to just roll into the next episode of the podcast without mentioning what I'd been up to the last little while. I considered sitting on my lonesome and giving you a debrief (**yawn**) and then had the most excellent idea to contact some of my people and see if they wanted to join me too. With that in mind, with me today is Cutting Horse Royalty, Human Who Epitomises Grace (these all require capital letters), a fabulous friend and someone with a dry and mischievous sense of humour (all my favourite things), Barbra Schulte. If you are yet to fall in love with Barb, here's a little bit about her… Barbra Schulte is a Professional Cutting Horse Trainer, Personal Performance Coach, Author, Clinician, and Equine Consultant. Among her many accolades, in 2000 Barbra was awarded the prestigious National Female Equestrian of the Year Award given by the American Quarter Horse Association in conjunction with the Women's Sports Foundation. This honor recognized outstanding performance and leadership in a female equestrian. In 2012 she was inducted into the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame, one of the most prestigious awards available for women equestrians for outstanding career accomplishments. I talk with Barb about our experience together at the Western States Horse Expo, discuss what she most loves teaching and how it is our work has influenced us both personally and professionally. We begin and end this conversation with the topic of happiness. In our culture, we're taught that happiness is the pinnacle of life, and when we aren't happy, we have somehow failed. But what if life is meant to provide more than just happiness? What if it's the view of the hills and valleys, the experiences of our journey that make up the rich tapestry of feelings and experiences that constitute a life? We explore how some really deep and brilliant moments are born from intense pain and grief. Experiences like grief can create an opening that connects us to our higher selves and allows us to feel everything, including joy, more richly. Is judging those moments more valuable than fully feeling them? But what do we do when we feel disconnected, lonely, or lost? How do we remind ourselves that we are not alone? The beautiful, and sometimes paradoxical, part of life is that many different elements can coexist at once without negating one another; we can be thriving, and also devastated or heartbroken. Rather than searching for happiness, maybe we can just let ourselves feel our feelings and move towards what we love and what makes us whole. Each of the guests shares their strategies for reconnecting, grounding themselves, and regaining perspective. We hope you enjoy this episode and that you'll join the conversation and share your experiences for the enrichment of all of us!Podcast GuestsSukie BaxterBarbara SchulteChristine DicksonJane PikeCarla BauchmuellerMusic by Mark RashidPhotography by Crissi McDonald

There are so many ways to introduce Barbra Schulte. You could start with the incredible work she does coaching riders, helping them develop mental strategies to get the best out of themselves and their horses. Or you could talk about her many outstanding accolades in the cutting horse arena, including her induction in the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame in 2012. But what I love most about Barbra is the warmth, love and kindness she exudes and the way she's shows up in the world. Beyond everything, that is what impresses me the most. I was fortunate to meet Barbra relatively recently, at the Journey On Podcast Summit in November of 2022. Listening to her talk, and then later having conversations with her, I instantly fell in love. I was so thrilled to have her agree to come on the podcast because there were things I wanted to talk about with her that extended beyond her work, her horses and what she teaches. I wanted to hear more about the behind the scenes of her life, about her beautiful son Zane and their story, and what made her tick. Over the course of our conversation we discuss:          Her life growing up with horses, her discovery of the Human Performance Institute and the impact that had on her life and work          Her son Zane, the impact of his life and death, and her journey with the experience of grief          Navigating life with trust and love I hope you enjoy listening to this conversation as much as I enjoyed having it. ❤️ Jane

I recently renewed my long time passion for horseback riding and met today’s guest — Barbra Schulte — at the C Lazy U dude ranch in Granby, Colorado where she was teaching peak performance on and off a horse.  Barbra is a Professional Cutting Horse Trainer, personal peak performance coach, and Equine Consultant. She is a Cowgirl Hall of Fame inductee and, this January, Barbra will be awarded the prestigious Women of the West Award given by Western Horseman Magazine. Barbra joins me on the podcast to discuss how she became interested in optimal human performance and to share some of her tips on finding your path to peak performance.  Listen in to learn the connection between positive and negative emotions and their impact on performance and to gain some serious tips on how to move past your hurdles and get yourself to your highest peak performance level.   The 3 biggest hurdles to peak performance and how to move past them   Blame — even self-blame — is a way to trick your mind into taking the pressure off of yourself in a situation — “who cares, I’m not putting any more energy into this”. It is the most difficult emotion to get past to achieve high performance.   Anger — unlike blame, anger has some measure of energy and so you can propel yourself towards peak performance with it; make sure to watch the direction of this energy, steer it away from blame.   Nerves/anxiety/fear — nerves are the closest emotion to shifting into that positive emotional mindset and peak performance.    How to shift away from negative emotions and find your calmness: Recognize your current state and name it Get calm — conscious breathing (inhale for four, exhale for four) — take the time you need to lower your heart rate; it takes practice. Direct your energy and move forward. Over time, you can work to condition the calmness by adding a physical trigger.   About Karen Tiber Leland   Karen Tiber Leland is the founder of Sterling Marketing Group, a branding, marketing, and color strategy and implementation firm helping CEOs, executives, and entrepreneurs develop stronger personal, business, and team brands. Plus, a few guided exercises to help improve your equitation.

Elise’s guest this episode is Sandy Collier: acclaimed international judge, clinician and member of the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame. Sandy’s analytical approach to training and reputation for consistency in both practice and show pens has resulted in a 50-year career studded with success.    Sandy grew up in the Northeast riding three-day event horses, but fell in love with  Western riding after landing in California in the mid-1970s. There, she worked for Doug  Ingersoll and Tom Shelly, and began to compete on Quarter Horses in the California  Reined Cow Horse Association. By the early 80s, she was running a training program of  her own.    Sandy’s competitive success grew quickly, with multiple AQHA and National Reined  Cow Horse Association World Championships (NRCHA) among her notable results. In  1993, riding Miss Rey Dry, she became the first and only woman to win the NRCHA  Snaffle Bit Futurity Open Championship, regarded as the world’s toughest cow horse  event.     With lifetime earnings of nearly $1 million, Sandy has been inducted into both the  Cowgirl and NRCHA Hall of Fame and Horse and Rider named her one of the Top 50  Riders of All Time in All Disciplines.    Sandy continues to positively impact the Western horse community through her clinics,  training videos and book, “Reining Essentials.” In 2017, Sandy and Barbra Schulte  teamed up to found “Be Unstoppable,” offering clinics and retreats to help equestrians  overcome challenges in reaching their riding and personal goals. With a deep-seated  love of the sport and a drive for constant improvement, Sandy is well known for her ability to find what works for the horse – no matter the discipline – to become their best.    In this episode, Sandy talks about her deep love for horses and how they have inspired her life path; her thoughts on being inducted into the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame, as well as receiving so many other prestigious awards; how her clinics and retreats are structured, and what participants should expect from each; Sandy’s special horses-of-a-lifetime; and her observations from travelling the world. She also gives her advice to those who are either taking their first steps in pursuing their passion or are at a crossroads in that pursuit.    Topics of Discussion:  [:18] About Elise’s guest today, Sandy Collier.  [1:44] Sandy speaks about the path her life has taken as she’s pursued building a career around horses.  [2:50] What it is about horses that speaks to her so deeply.  [5:10] Was Sandy the only person in her family that had a deep love for horses?  [6:25] Looking back on her career, Sandy reflects on her transition from riding English to riding Western.  [8:54] Sandy explains the Reined Cow Horse discipline.  [12:25] Considering that Sandy is competing in disciplines that have traditionally been dominated by men, has gender ever been an issue?  [14:35] Up-and-coming female riders Sandy thinks have a shot at being the next champion of the NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity.  [15:22] Elise reads a quote from the author, Joyce Gibson Roach, and Sandy explains how the sentiment inspires her.  [16:59] About some of Sandy’s amazing accomplishments outside the horse world.  [19:04] Sandy gives some advice for those who are either taking their first steps in pursuing their passion or are at a crossroads.  [21:24] Sandy’s thoughts on being inducted into the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame, and being included among these talented and inspirational women.  [22:45] What horses mean to Sandy both personally and professionally, and how they’ve guided her life.  [25:02] Sandy speaks about her special horses-of-a-lifetime.  [29:47] Sandy and Elise address some horse myths.  [31:22] Sandy’s observations on horse people as she has traveled the world.  [32:25] About the retreats and clinics Sandy and Barbra Schulte run together.  [37:05] About next week’s episode of Because of Horses.  [37:40] Sandy talks about the mental and personal skill set that is essential to participants in her retreats and clinics.  [40:47] Where to learn more about Sandy and her work.    Know Someone Inspirational, Whose Life Has Been Forever Changed Because of Horses? Because of Horses would love to get to share their story!  To recommend someone please send an email to elise@becauseofhorses.com.    Mentioned in this Episode:  Sandy Collier  Horse and Rider  National Reined Cow Horse Association (NRCHA)  Cowgirl Hall of Fame  The Cowgirls, by Joyce Gibson Roach  Donna Barton Brothers  Because of Horses’ episode, “Distinguished Former Jockey and Accomplished TV Correspondent, Donna Barton Brothers”  A Parent’s Guide to Riding Lessons: Everything You Need to Know to Survive and Thrive with a Horse-Loving Kid, by Elise Chand  United States Pony Club  Barbra Schulte  Because of Horses’ episode, “The Cutting Edge: NCHA Champion and Trainer, Barbra Schulte”  Barb & Sandy’s Clinics and Riding Retreats (Be Unstoppable)  Barb & Sandy’s Clinics and Riding Retreats’ Facebook page (Be Unstoppable)  Next week’s episode of Because of Horses    Like what you hear? Because of Horses would love to hear your feedback!  Please email elise@becauseofhorses.com to send Because of Horses your thoughts.    To Support the Podcast:  • Donate on Paypal to help keep Because of Horses running — all amounts are welcome!  • Subscribe: RSS Feed, iTunes, Google Play, TuneIn, Stitcher, and Player FM

Elise’s guest on today’s Because of Horses podcast is the extraordinary horsewoman, Barbra Schulte. She is the only woman to win the Cutting Horse "Triple Crown”: the NCHA Derby, the NCHA Super Stakes Classic, and the Augusta Futurity. She was also awarded National Female Equestrian of the Year by the American Quarter Horse Association and the Women’s Sports Foundation, and is a National Cowgirl Hall of Fame inductee, former Vice President of the Cutting Horse Association, a professional trainer and clinician, a certified Performance Coach, multi-published author, and an equine consultant.   On top of all that, Barbra Schulte is an advocate — and a great example — of living life to the fullest. In this episode, she and Elise discuss how her parents’ training business impacted her own career, from a very early age; how it felt to compete at 13 against adults at the national level – and win; and how her degree and initial, non-horse career actually fed her passion for horses and makes her that much more effective as a trainer and a coach.    In this conversation, Barbara also talks about some of the universal rider issues she’s observed and worked to correct; how she helps guide riders to reframe their thoughts and “rein” in their emotions; explains what makes a good Cutting Horse; and shares her own riding approach and techniques.   Topics of Discussion: [:19] About Elise’s guest today, Barbra Schulte. [1:02] When did Barbra realize she had a talent for horses? Or was it just always present from her early childhood? [5:25] As a very young rider competing against adult professionals, did Barbra realize how remarkable her achievements were? [8:26] How Barbra’s previous studies and careers connect with her current path and passion for horses. [13:37] Universal obstacles and issues that Barbra comes across time and again as a certified Personal Performance Coach. [17:00] How does Barbra coach riders to reframe their thoughts and “rein” in their emotions? [21:57] About Elise’s book, A Parent’s Guide to Riding Lessons! [22:40] What is it like to ride a good Cutting Horse? What makes a good Cutter? And how does Barbra hang on? [28:28] Barbra speculates why there tend to be more men in Cutting than women. [31:33] About next week’s episode of Because of Horses. [32:44] What it means to Barbra to be honored by the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame. [36:25] About how Barbra’s husband, Tom, and his nominating her for the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame. [36:39] How Tom and Barbra work together on a day-to-day basis. [40:44] Elise thanks YOU for listening to Because of Horses! She reads a couple reviews from new listeners and thanks everyone for tuning in. Barbra Schulte Cowgirl Cutter Personal Coach I first met Barbra Schulte early in my horsemanship career.  While volunteering at Equine Affaire in Pomona, California, Barbra was giving a cow clinic.  It must have been around 2007 or 2008, and here was this soft-spoken woman talking about how to cut cows out of the herd.  Being "green as grass", I certainly did not know much about cutting, nor did I know many of the personalities in the horse.   Barbra began talking about the different cow personalities and how one would be better to cut than the other. Barbra talked about the different cow personalities and how one would cut easier than the other.  My head was on a swivel as I looked at the herd, then back at Barbra, back to the herd.  How could she tell them apart?  Her skills really impress me and by the end of the session, I had a slight understanding of herd dynamics. The Bobby Kerr Connection Almost 10 years go by and I get to interview the Mustang Man, Bobby Kerr.  Bobby tells this wonderful story about he ran away from his home and schooling in Canada to a horse trader in Illinois because he wanted to cowboy.  Bobby told me the man's name was Cletus Hullings and he learned a lot about horses and cutting from the man.  Fascinated with the story Bobby told, I looked up Cletus Hullings and he had four daughters and one of them was Barbra Schulte! Barbra Schulte has a lot of knowledge about cutting, cows, horses and performance and I had to get a few tips about competing in an arena.  She is an author, clinician, equine consultant, and performance coach and a member of the Cowgirl Hall of Fame!  It's quite an informative interview.  Check out Barbra's website, BarbraSchulte.com and her Facebook Page for all the wonderful advice she has to offer.
