On this episode, host, Aaron Nabus talks to the creator of the 80's anime inspired, Black Lion and Cubs, Hotep! Born in New York City in the 1970s, Hotep is the personification of the progress made during the civil rights movements, the birth of Hip-Hop music, and the emergence of Black culture in American society. After graduating from Morehouse College, he became one of the only Black, male kindergarten teachers in his district. There, he learned first-hand how powerful and influential media is on the human mind and psyche. Today, Hotep is a consultant to schools across the United States, a father of 2 and producer of several different types of media including: books, cartoons, films, music and video games. His most recent creation, a family-friendly anime series called Black Lion and Cubs is a perfect example of why his work has earned him nominations for the Presidential Citizen's Award and as a CNN Hero. The Black Lion and Cubs universe incorporates, for now, a cartoon series, videogame, album, graphic novels, and motion manga series. I had the pleasure of meeting him at Black Comix Day 2024 in San Diego, CA where he was part of the panel that I moderated that touched on Black Culture in Anime and Manga. He currently has an active Kickstarter campaign going on until March 3, 2025 for his newest project – an anime short film about one of the characters from the Black Lion and Cubs universe, the Amazing Ariyah. Welcome to the show, Hotep!

Ron Alvarez, a CNN Hero finalist, musician and educator is transforming lives through teaching kids to play music in The Dream Orchestra.. Ron shares he went from a childhood in Caracas, Venezuela to changing the lives of refugee children in Sweden. Ron's story begins when he joined El Sistema, a musical and social program in Venezuela, which awakened his passion for music and set the course of his life. Ron realized he wanted to pay it forward by becoming a music teacher. Eventually, Ron grabbed an opportunity to teach music to kids in an orphanage in Greenland. After the incredible experience in Greenland, Ron moved to Sweden for a teaching job. Witnessing the influx of unaccompanied minors from Syria and Afghanistan, Ron felt compelled to make a difference with the most powerful tool he had to change lives, the power of music. The lack of funding and language barriers did not keep Ron from starting Dream Orchestra, a sanctuary for young refugees and asylum seekers, offering them a sense of community and belonging through music. Over 400 children have had their lives transformed but also enriched through the magic and language of music. Join us as we explore Ron's extraordinary path, the lessons he's learned along the way, and his dreams for the future of the Dream Orchestra. Today's Guest President of the American Association of Caregiving Youth, Connie was educated at Johns Hopkins and New York University, she obtained her PhD in 2004 from Lynn University to have a bigger voice for family caregivers. Connie never expected her doctoral research to uncover the high prevalence of family health situations and concomitant caregiving with detrimental academic effects upon children in Palm Beach County. Her broad background in healthcare and dedication to diminishing caregiver isolation and struggles led to the 1998 establishment of what is now the American Association for Caregiving Youth. It includes the Caregiving Youth Project, the first US program to support the hidden population of child caregivers. Her dream is for all family caregivers to be honored and respected but especially youth for their contributions to family and to society; no child in the US should have to drop out of school because he or she has to care for a family member. In June of 2009, Connie was awarded a lifetime Ashoka Fellowship and in October 2009 she became one of 10 Purpose Prize winners, a national endeavor honoring persons over 60 years of age who initiated an innovative solution for social change. In September 2010 The Johns Hopkins University Alumni Association presented her with The Distinguished Alumna Award. In 2011 AACY won the Palm Beach County Medical Society's Heroes in Medicine Award for Community Outreach and later that year Connie was named a Woman of Grace by Bethesda Hospital Foundation. During May 2012 she was named a CNN Hero and in September was one the Top Ten Heroes for 2012. https://aacy.org/ About Dr. Raj Dr Raj is a quadruple board certified physician and associate professor at the University of Southern California. Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with Michele Neff Hernandez, Author, “Different After You: Rediscovering Yourself and Healing After Grief and Trauma” About Harvey's guests: Today's guest, Michele Neff Hernandez, is an advocate, teacher, leader and author who exemplifies the meaning of personal growth, transformation and healing following one of life's most tragic and traumatic events: the death of a spouse. In 2005, when our guest was only 35 years old with 3 children under 15 and 3 step-children in their late teens, her husband Phillip was suddenly killed in a cycling accident, plunging her into the devastating world of grief, despair, loneliness and profound heartbreak. Over the next year, as she struggled through unknown emotional territory, she conducted in-depth interviews of 30 different widows across America. That experience led her to create a non-profit organization called Soaring Spirits International, whose mission is to provide a space for widowed people to connect, to foster resilience, and to develop resources for grief recovery and the successful rebuilding of meaningful and satisfying lives. Soaring Spirits International is the premier peer-based support organization for widows in the world, guiding people from great pain to personal empowerment. Our guest is also the creator and director of the innovative Camp Widow Program. She's won numerous awards for her work helping thousands of people navigate widowhood, and in 2021, she was named a CNN Hero. In addition to being the CEO of Soaring Spirits International and the executive director of Soaring Spirits Canada, she's also the director of the Soaring Spirits Resilience Center located in Kerrville, Texas, whose mission is to research and build resilience in people who are bereaved. Our guest has also written a compelling and insightful book entitled, “Different After You: Rediscovering Yourself and Healing After Grief and Trauma”, in which she shares how she took the worst tragedy of her life – the loss of her beloved husband - and developed the coping mechanisms and skills to transform her pain into healing and positive change, and to turn surviving into thriving. This heartfelt and very helpful book is relevant not only to those who've become widowed, but to anyone who's suffered ANY kind of catastrophic loss due to illness, divorce, an accident, the death of a family member or close friend, and even the loss of a career or a longtime home. A 2013 CNN Hero, Danielle has devoted herself to finding ways to help more than 400,000 children in foster care. Danielle founded One Simple Wish in 2008 with the goal of granting wishes to children in foster care across the country and those who've aged out of foster care. On One Simple Wish, people can view wishes from foster children and make contributions that make those wishes come true. Wishes range from toys to school supplies, music lessons or trips to a theater or pool. In our conversation, Danielle shares the deeply personal story that led her to foster care, her experiences with the foster system and why children in the foster system need our attention and support. If you have been thinking of ways to contribute and help others One Simple Wish was started with the goal of giving people an opportunity to connect with foster kids and easily make meaningful contributions. Danielle is asking us to go to One Simple Wish and read the stories. She says, “just by you acknowledging their existence and their journey and maybe sharing it with somebody else, or becoming more aware, you then become part of their village.” Research studies have shown a strong correlation between foster care and so many other critical issues in our society. Danielle's vision is to connect people with foster kids while bringing light and awareness to the system, that in turn will hopefully lead to positive change. Danielle says, “We need more people recognizing that our foster system is incredibly broken and it is all of our problem.“ If you enjoy this conversation, please share it with a friend and help us share Danielle's message and goal of helping kids in foster care. Topics Discussed: Danielle shares the story of how she started One Simple Wish, discussing the moment or series of events that led her to start the organization.
