Prof Richard Taylor: bio-inspired technology improving the eye

A professor in physics, psychology and art, Richard Taylor believes the bio-inspired technology he is developing with a team at the University of Oregon could one day lead to a bionic eye. Taylor is exploring how diseased regions of the retina can be replaced by fractal electronic implants, converting light into electrical signals. They have grown rodent retinal neurons on a fractal-patterned electrode, mimicking the repeating branching pattern in which neurons naturally grow. He has also used bioinspired fractal images to reduce people's stress levels. Known for his work across disciplines, he is also considered a leading expert on the artist Jackson Pollock, proving that his paint splatters are in fact fractals. Prof Taylor is giving a free public talk in Rotorua on the 8th of February, on the stress-reducing properties of fractals, as part of the 10th International Conference on Advanced Materials.

Bard, MD,is an author of; The Prostate Cancer Revolution: Beating Prostate Cancer Without Surgery and an internationally known and recognized leader in the field of 21st Century 3-D ULTRASONOGRAPHIC VOLUMETRIC DOPPLER IMAGING.  In the Book The Prostate Cancer Revolution there is a new world of medical options for the 200,000+ men diagnosed annually with prostate cancer. Backed by compelling data about new ultrasound and MRI imaging technologies, Dr. Bard offers a way to overcome what men fear most dreaded random rectal biopsies using 10-14 needles with often inaccurate findings, being rushed into a whole-gland treatment (surgery, radiation), not being told the truth about side effect risks, missed time from work during treatment and recovery, leaking urine, having to wear pads or diapers, not being able to perform sexually. The Prostate Cancer Revolution explains how imaging breakthroughs provide peace of mind, tumors and their blood supply are precisely identified, if a biopsy is necessary, needle samples are taken only from the known tumor(s) for highly accurate findings, advanced imaging is used to plan and deliver minimally invasive, painless outpatient targeted treatments that destroy tumors without urinary or sexual side effects. The Prostate Cancer Revolution explains how imaging avoids unnecessary biopsies and “overkill” treatments, enables patients to monitor prostate health, and empowers them to create a cancer-free lifestyle. Dr. Bard shares his personal experience to inspire independent thinking. The Prostate Cancer Revolution is a revolutionary path for prostate cancer patients and their partners to release fear and embrace life to the max. Dr. Bard specializes in advanced 3-D sonography to detect cancers in numerous organs including the breast, prostate, skin, thyroid, melanoma and other areas. Andy and Dave discuss the latest in AI and autonomy news and research, including a report from Human Center AI that assesses progress (or lack thereof) of the implementation of the three pillars of America's strategy for AI innovation. The Department of Energy is offering up a total of $33M for research in leveraging AI/ML for nuclear fusion. China's Navy appears to have launched a naval mothership for aerial drones. China is also set to introduce regulation on “deepfakes,” requiring users to give consent and prohibiting the technology for fake news, among many other things. Xiamen University and other researchers publish a “multidisciplinary open peer review dataset” (MOPRD), aiming to provide ways to automate the peer review process. Google executives issue a “code red” for Google's search business over the success of OpenAI's ChatGPT. New York City schools have blocked access for students and teachers to ChatGPT unless it involves the study of the technology itself. Microsoft plans to launch a version of Bing that integrates ChatGPT to its answers. And the International Conference on Machine Learning bans authors from using AI tools like ChatGPT to write scientific papers (though still allows the use of such systems to “polish” writing). In February, an AI from DoNotPay will likely be the first to represent a defendant in court, telling the defendant what to say and when. In research, the UCLA Departments of Psychology and Statistics demonstrate that analogical reasoning can emerge from large language models such as GPT-3, showing a strong capacity for abstract pattern induction. Research from Google Research, Stanford, Chapel Hill, and DeepMind shows that certain abilities only emerge from large language models that have a certain number of parameters and a large enough dataset. And finally, John H. Miller publishes Ex Machina through the Santa Fe Institute Press, examining the topic of Coevolving Machines and the Origins of the Social Universe. https://www.cna.org/our-media/podcasts/ai-with-ai

An affirmative approach to aging takes into account that new parts of us are always clamoring for airtime. The soul and spirit don't "retire" even if our careers do, and there's a difference between getting older and growing older. These parts of us could be passions and creative leaps, service projects and leadership roles in the community, a new line of work or an exploration of some non-work modes of expression, or simply rediscovering the sense of wonder and love of learning. They ask us to continually reinvent ourselves and stay close to our deepest sense of passion and purpose. In this episode, we'll explore the nature and nurture of passion as we age - what inspires it and what defeats it, how we lose it, and how we get it back.In this episode, you'll discover:Passion can be cultivated and turned on as well as turned offPassion is in the risk-the willingness to step from the sidelines onto the playing field.Passion breeds passion, and disinterest breeds disinterest. If we lack passion in our own lives, our other relationships will be denied that energy.Passion is more than exuberance; it's endurance.Passion is intimately related to health. To the degree passion is vitality, honoring our passions enhances our vitality.About Gregg Levoy: Gregg Levoy, author of Callings: Finding and Following An Authentic Life (rated among the Top 20 Career Publications by the Workforce Information Group) and Vital Signs: The Nature and Nurture of Passion, is the former behavioral specialist at USA Today and a regular blogger for Psychology Today. He has presented at the International Conference on Positive Aging, Smithsonian Institution, Environmental Protection Agency, Microsoft, American Counseling Association, National Career Development Association, and many others. Our guest, Dr. Greg Guldner discusses the successful implementation of positive and organizational psychology into medical culture. Two key theories used at his facility were: Job-Demands Resources and Self Determination Theory. Some episode highlights: The biggest variable is job demands. This explains why mindfulness and resiliency training have largely failed for medical workplace burnout. Self-Determination Theory identifies 3 main psychological needs: Autonomy Of the 3, this may be the most important, so autonomy supportive leadership is key What your doing aligns with your values Belonging Competence Workplaces can either thwart or support these needs. A culture of wellness is: "shared beliefs, shared values, and shared social practices that are so ingrained nobody questions them anymore." Another component is meaning. Be deliberate Pay attention - you'll miss it otherwise And lastly, psychological capital: self efficacy, hope, resilience, and optimism. Autonomy supporting leadership includes: Flexibility - recognizing when there are options, allowing for choice, and not directing when able Nudging - encouraging further thought and reassessment rather than directing Transparency in decision-making and showing how it aligns with values What Went Well A useful practice to deliberately point out competence and the prosocial meaning of what happened. Use active positive responding Bolters belonging Promotes psychological capital "Be the change you wish to see in the world." The stigma of help-seeking behaviors is something organizations need to improve. "The most distressed people won't ask for help." Consider opt-out rather than opt-in Resources: Dr. Guldner's RECOMMENDED RESOURCES to get started at your institution. I tended to look for a miracle, something dramatic and earth-shattering. But what usually happens is that a sense of well-being, a feeling of peace, transforms us into a new level of awareness. That's what happened to me. My insanity and inner turmoil disappeared and I entered into a new dimension of hope, love and peace. I think the degree to which I continue to experience this new dimension is in direct proportion to the sincerity, depth and devotion with which I practice the Twelve Steps of A.A.From the book Daily ReflectionsCopyright © 1990 by Alcoholics Anonymous World Services, Inc.Support the showNeed the Daily Reflection Book? A must listen for every human! Especially if you are going to birth a son in the near future.Circumcision is the most popular medical surgery in USA today. But somehow it got to the point of it being performed for health reasons more that religious reasons. However, the claimed “health benefits” are based on flawed science, and in contrast, circumcision has alarming health and traumatic dangers. But is there valuable ancient wisdom based in this rite of passage that religious and indigenous cultures have been performing for centuries?Or has the essence of these rite of passages been misunderstood? Is circumcision a violation of human rights? or are parents confidently making responsible and informed decisions? Our guest, filmmaker, public speaker and very passionate and active man, Brendon Marotta, made an award winning film: American circumcision, which presents science and opinions from both sides of the decision - to circumcise or not.  The film presents religious leaders, doctors, lawyers and human rights spokespeople on both sides. This is one of the most important podcast episodes on the Vital Veda Show, as the act of circumcising or not is a highly influential non-reversible act.IN THIS EPISODE WE DISCUSS:

Mutations are known to occur at much higher rates than can be accounted for in evolutionary theory. Given measurable rates, Y Chromosome Adam and Mitochondrial Eve would have lived only a few thousand years ago. To answer this, evolutionists generally appeal to natural selection or genetic drift. Yet, selection can only remove 'selectable' mutations, and most mutations are necessarily selectively neutral. Also, drift fails to do anything at all in answering the dilemma. In the end, Adam and Eve are recent and there is little anyone can say about it. Notes and links: Carter 2019 A successful decade for Mendel's Accountant Robert Carter gets everything wrong? Today, it's just me.  I'm discussing a metaphor I've been sharing for years in my workshops, but somehow haven't brought to the podcast yet.  It's a way to pay more attention to the things that are going smoothly, rather than the things that are getting in the way and causing trouble.  It's an important skill to develop, so we can reinforce the things we want, and have a better outlook on our lives.  And it's especially critical with ADHD in the mix. Where's Brendan? November 1st– I'll be doing a live webinar for ADDitude on how teachers and parents can help lonely teenagers who are dealing with peer rejection. Today, we're talking to Dr. Elizabeth Kilmer. Dr. Kilmer is a licensed clinical psychologist and the director of education and training at Game to Grow.  In this outstanding interview Elizabeth shares a brief exploration of the ways Dungeons and Dragons supports social growth, and then for the bulk of the interview we examine the SPARK model from Game to Grow's Critical Core program, and how parents can use this guide for good game mastering to improve their parenting.  I recognize that this interview might seem a bit niche and geeky.  But I promise, even if you have zero interest in Dungeons and Dragons, you'll find it the information useful.  Throughout, we're essentially looking at the similarities and metaphorical interconnections between being and game master and being a parent and leader.  Besides, it's been a few years since I last did a D&D episode.  Guest Links: Learn more about Dr. Elizabeth Kilmer at https://gametogrow.org/about/staff/elizabethkilmer/ Learn more about Game to Grow at https://gametogrow.org Learn more about Critical Core at https://gametogrow.org/essentials/ Use the code "essentials" for a 10% discount!
