Tobin absolutely loses it on the Miami Heat as rumors are heating up that Giannis might actually end up on the Boston Celtics; he of course yells over to Biscayne Boulevard begging them to PLEASE DO THEIR JOB! Then the crew wraps up this Friday with a little you're Dead to Me!
Let's welcome Pat Riley onto the show this week. As an entrepreneur for years, Pat made a big pivot into working for someone else. That shift gives him a unique view from both the owner's and employee's side. This conversation challenged stereotypes we all hear Gen Z isn't lazy, Boomers aren't just selfish stock watchers, and bringing decades of experience into a new role doesn't mean you're stuck in old ways.Pat spent years owning and selling multiple businesses before transitioning into a sales management role. That transition from being the boss to having a boss required humility and finding leadership with values that aligned with his. He found both at Earth Development, bringing experience in building and leading organizations to his new position. We spend too much time labeling generations instead of recognizing what each one brings to the table.Pat's team is young and motivated by something bigger than just money. They understand the company's mission of keeping people safe in the winter. They care about purpose and community.Pat also talks about how he brought his AI expertise to transform a stagnant CRM system by simply asking technology how to solve problems differently. The college debt crisis came up when Pat shared his daughter's story about how her ideal college tuition just didn't make sense at over $200,000. The math didn't work. She ended up choosing a college closer to home which sacrificed experience but saved a lot of money in the future.Major employers are also starting to shift their requirements for four-year degrees. They've realized that many positions don't actually need one.Highlights:Young workers care more about purpose and being part of something bigger than just money.Pat's transition from business owner to employee required humility and finding values-aligned leadership.College debt has reached the point where $268,000 for a teaching degree makes zero financial sense.Major employers now accept two-year degrees because they've realized the traditional four-year degree isn't necessary for many positions.AI tools can transform stagnant systems when you simply ask how to solve problems differently.Do you want more honest conversations about what's actually happening in business and the workforce? Shaq opens up about sacrificing his numbers to empower Dwyane as the star, and admits his real motivation for winning was getting a ring before Kobe. Zo shares how a serious kidney illness made him take a massive pay cut just to get back and chase a title. They talk about Pat Riley taking over and immediately bringing accountability, defining roles, and forcing the team to actually know each other’s families. And they own being the most unserious championship team ever, 41 parties on the road, three hour practices, until Shaq convinced Riley to move practice to the afternoon.UD gets his flowers from everyone in the room for how he locked down Dirk Nowitzki, and Dwyane closes it out sharing that his whole motivation was making sure Shaq, Zo, and GP got the championships their legacies deserved. @MiamiHeatMusic Credit: Khari Mateen. What We Discussed:00:00 Introduction 00:37 Player Comparisons: Who Would You Be In Today’s Game?08:41 Shaq’s Arrival And Defining Roles In Miami 11:53 Motivations: Chasing Kobe And Closing Windows 15:55 Proving The Doubters Wrong 17:10 Role Players Stepping Up20:27: The Turning Point: When They Knew They Could Win It All24:49 Pay Riley Takes Over: Accountability And New Rotations 27:53 Changing The Culture: Forced Bonding And Pushing Back Practice 30:17 Work Hard, Play Hard: The “Unserious” Partying Team31:07 Hometown Hero34:32 A Tight-Knit Brotherhood: 100 Fights But No Grudges36:22 The Young Guy’s Perspective: Dorell Wright 38:15 Throwbacks: Draft Rivalries And The “Malik Allen Game”40:57 The Aftermath: How Winning The Championship Actually Felt 44:39 Gary Payton’s Decision To Come Back46:13 Doing It Their Way And The Bond They Share 48:32 D-Wade’s Motivation49:45 Collecting Debts: Shaq’s Unfulfilled Bentley Promise #MiamiHeat #Checkin #DwyaneWade #2006Champions #HeatNationSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Wayne Simien is an NBA champion for the Miami Heat and two-time All-American and Big 12 Player of the Year for the Kansas Jayhawks. He currently serves as Associate Athletics Director of Strategic Engagement for KU. Wayne also works as a broadcaster for KU Men's and Women's basketball on ESPN+. Before joining Kansas athletics, Wayne spent 12 years in campus ministry. He and his wife Katie are the parents of five children. In this episode we discuss the following: Good things don't happen by accident. Whether good health, meaningful relationships, or a flourishing career, all of them require work. And often a coach who is guiding us and pushing us and a team that holds us accountable. Competitiveness is more about having the drive to prepare than having the desire to win. From Bill Self Wayne learned the importance of toughness as a leadership trait. By making practice harder than the games, players develop resiliency and grit on a day-to-day basis. From Roy Williams Wayne learned that long term success comes from commitment to a system. Ten years after leaving KU, Roy was winning national championships at North Carolina built around his same system. And what an amazing lesson Wayne learned from Pat Riley. After winning the NBA championship with Hall of Famers, Shaq, Gary Payton, Alonzo Mourning, and Dwyane Wade, the first drill they did the next year was the basic three man weave.

Dwyane also talks about his role in the Utah Jazz governing group, excited about the number two pick and building the right culture around Keyonte George and Lauri Markkanen, and closes by telling impatient Heat fans to trust the front office to get Bam the help he needs. It's Friday and the Big Shot Bob crew is back with Episode 131 of Shoot Around — the weekly bonus show where Robert Horry, Rob Jenners, and B-Dog Brandon Harper dig into the questions YOU send in and whatever's on their minds. This week kicks off with a debate born from the new Michael Jackson biopic hitting theaters: Start, Bench, Cut — MJ era edition. The Thriller era (1982–85), the Bad era (1987–89), and the Dangerous era (1991–94) are all on the table. Which era do you start? Which do you bench? Which do you cut? The guys break down their picks, argue over the greatest MJ music videos of all time (Smooth Criminal vs. Remember the Time), debate whether Chris Tucker was actually IN Smooth Criminal (he wasn't), and Harper goes deep on the Ghost mini-movie that almost nobody's seen. The verdict? Unanimous love for Thriller, but serious disagreement on whether Bad or Dangerous gets the bench. Then the guys jump into the all-time greatest NBA coaches debate, sparked by Pat Riley making it clear at 81 years old that he has zero plans to retire or step aside. Phil Jackson, Pat Riley, Gregg Popovich, Don Nelson, Lenny Wilkins, Red Auerbach — who makes the cut? Robert Horry gives a unique firsthand perspective on Phil Jackson, including the detail that Phil literally never spoke to him during their championship runs together. There's also the Del Harris comparison — same roster, completely different results — and what that says about coaching being as much about managing personalities as drawing up plays. A Reddit user's anti-tanking beer pricing proposal gets a quick airing, and then the crew weighs in on Diego Pavia going undrafted after representing himself at the NFL Draft — no agent, no deal. Robert Horry reflects on firing his own agent in 2001 and what he missed out on off the court despite winning six championships, and the guys debate whether being your own representative ever actually works when you're already fighting an uphill battle. To close things out, a fan question about the best superhero shows ever made opens up a great conversation about Invincible (currently must-watch TV), The Boys, Smallville, The Flash, Dragon Ball Z, the upcoming Mortal Kombat film, and a He-Man movie trip that Robert Horry is already planning with his son. Plus — the case for a live-action Thundercats reboot that the world is clearly not ready for.

“That is the one regret I have of my time playing in New York.”-Patrick Ewing In this powerful episode of The Pivot Podcast, NBA legend Patrick Ewing sits down for a candid and reflective conversation about the journey that shaped his life and career. This one hits differently as the Hall of Famer, who rarely shares, opens up on all the highs and lows with transparency, emotion and even a touch of humor. From his early upbringing and path to basketball greatness, Ewing opens up about the discipline, challenges, and mindset that carried him from humble beginnings to becoming a dominant force at Georgetown to NBA legend. Grounded by the sacrifice of his parents, Patrick Ewing praises his family's move to the United States from Jamaica and how it not only saved his life but paved the way for him to live his dream. He revisits his iconic college years, where he helped turn Georgetown into a national powerhouse, and shares what it meant to play under the legendary John Thompson. Ewing opens up on his pivotal moment being selected as the NBA's first overall pick to New York and how he became the cornerstone of the Knicks best years and adjusted to Big Apple fame—embracing the pressure of the bright lights, the physicality of 90s basketball, and the responsibility of leading a franchise hungry for a championship. The conversation doesn't shy away from the toughest on-court battles and heated rivalries. Ewing reflects on intense matchups against Michael Jordan and Hakeem Olajuwon, offering insight into what made those rivalries so challenging and memorable. He speaks honestly about coming close to an NBA title but never quite securing one, and how that reality has shaped his perspective over time. He also gets into the truth behind his once rocky relationship with his former coach Pat Riley and his gratitude for Jeff Van Gundy. Whether you are a sports fan or love a success story rooted in family and hard work, this will connect with you as we take a trip down memory lane through one of the most infamous times in all of sports, classic moments forever etched in our mind, and inside stories from some of the greatest basketball games and athletes to ever play, told from the perspective of an absolute legend. How Ewing views his impact on the game, what he hopes people remember, and how he's found peace with both the triumphs and the unfinished business of his career is one of the more honest, thoughtful, and deeply human conversations we've had that goes far beyond basketball.
